    I think the problem might just be the way these communities don't actually care about anyone as an artist. The work doesn't matter to them, except as pretty windowdressing for the real "content," which is an influencer/personality/imaginary friend. If you look at it with that mindset, then it doesn't matter if one of them ripped off the other one's "style," since the style of their actual content is totally different, like one's aspirational and the other's relatable or whatever the dynamics are. The far greater crime would be saying something even-remotely mean about one of the other imaginary friends, when the only reason anybody liked you in the first place was that they thought you were "nice."
    And, obviously, when your art is just painting a green line on your wall, it doesn't help.

      I agree, the whole parasocial relationship thing. The braying mob is always going to take things into their own hands. Let's not allow these two strangers to work out their little spat like two adults, oh no! Let's get involved by brigading the offending party's socials, sending de@th threats and d0xxing. That will help matters...

    6:27 on this point it's clear to me that "I didn't know that she was feeling like this" meant "I didn't know that this conflict was unresolved", like she thought after the DM exchange they were fine. I also have heard some claims that if you check the posting dates some of Kaaren's recent similar DIYS were started before Tay's videos on them came out. but otherwise yeah man exactly

    I will say that I’ve seen videos made showing some of Karin’s designs were made before Taylor’s, such as the moss mirror, and that many of Karin’s designs started as one thing but turned into another bc the first thing wasn’t turning out. It’s not a simple black and white “this creator copied this creator” and it’s overall just such a petty squabble to be blasted out to all of TikTok. Just the weirdest intercommunity discourse I’ve seen in a bit lol.

  • @lola9148
    @lola9148 Рік тому +69

    agree with this but also the moss mirror and the green blue palette situations were both shown to have been started by karin before taybeepboop posted her own versions of it. so like the point of 'ignoring and continuing to do it' i feel like isn't actually that strong, and i've interpreted the 'i didnt know she felt that way' as more of like. her thinking the dms were the end of it, since apart from the squiggles she did not purposefully follow any diys specifically. i think id be similarly Joker-like in tay's position. not only is having the same idea as someone else but being beaten to do it like HORRIBLY FRUSTRATING online since most of the time people will not pay the same attention to your effort because they've seen it before, it's got the economic side of it going on since the tiktoks are an income stream.

I was thinking the same thing, it's not "this person is using the same colors as me >:(" it's a interior decorator with a specific niche being upset that another creator is doing the exact same niche, which cuts in on her audience. Someone copying your niche who ends up getting just as popular off your ideas and niche is VERY frustrating, especially when it's your career.

    While it seems Tay has a reason to be upset, she definitely took it out the wrong way by making it a public affair by resorting to what's essentially a Tumblr callout post.
    Honestly the best course of action would have been to just ignore it and move on.
    When James Rolfe was once asked at a convention what he thought about Chris Bores ripping off his Angry Video Game Nerd videos with Irate Gamer, James acknowledged the situation in what I think is the ideal way of dealing with it

    OMG YES, the narcissism thing!! Person breaks up with you "what a narcissist", person disagrees with you over something that doesn't even matter? "they are a narcissist". Person calls you out for a behaviour that was harming yourself or someone else. Well obviously they are a "huge narcissist". Someone has one bad day and acts like a bitch. "I always knew they were a narcissist". Or my favorite, a person sets a healthy boundary with you, "Why are you abusing me, you are a narcissist!" I have not been called one yet, but I see this all the time. The over abundance of people mis-using therapy speak has really gotten out of hand. There are real narcissists out there people...and muddying the waters of the real definition of narcissism only makes it harder for real narcissts to be called out or stopped.

    Everything is reference on reference. This is as much a copyright infringement/ plagiarism as Phoebe Bridgers song is to an Elliot Smith song. Making DIY content should inspire others to make similar things ( I understand the issue is with a creator monetizing, not on people doing her DIYs)- acknowledging the inspiration would be right thing to do though. Especially funny on tiktok, a medium almost completely reliant on replication and memes. If they were irl interior design/ decorator competitors in the same city this would be a different conversation. The original content creator is a *big* content creator, would also feel differently if this were someone with less of an audience and zero credit

    My parents also have a ton of money. They have never helped me financially once I moved out outside of buying like a microwave. This includes when me and my ex's car broke and since they needed it to keep their job, their mother gave us a loan from the savings that they needed for fixing their broken boiler. It also includes vet bills to try to save my cat's life that I couldn't pay so the cat was euthanized. Meanwhile my parents are sitting in their new hot tub like "Sorry dear, money's a little tight this month".
    Sure it's their money they make the decision they want, it'd be just nice to be included on that list for a change. I was a semi-rich kid and I've lived in poverty the last 9 years. We don't all get generous parents.

    You know, it really seems like the issue is that, if you're going to run a DIY channel, you either need to bring your own projects to the table, or loudly and publicly state that you are doing a project inspired by someone else, with redirect info, when that's the case. Which it clearly was? I mean... Tay isn't wrong. The whole is stupid by inclusion of the public, but between the two of them, Tay has genuine grievance and whatserface isn't respecting the unspoken inspiration contract artists have.

    If you open a market stall and sell bird themed stained glass, and another person sells fish themed stained glass, then there's no issue despite it both being stained glass. It caters to different niches, and you will have similar but different audiences. Both lovers of stained glass, but one audience prefers birds, and one prefers fish.
    But if you open your bird stained glass market stall, and then a couple months later someone else opens a bird themed stained glass market stall, and a lot of the designs are similar, then it becomes an issue. As that person is cutting in on your audience, and causing you to lose money.
    Now imagine you confront that person and say, "Hey, I've been doing bird stained glass for a while now, and a lot of your designs look like mine, could you stop selling bird stained glass here?" Because you want them to either do their own thing, or just go to a different market so they're not taking your customers.
    Now imagine after saying that, their customers and some of your customers, and even a lot of bystanders start to get mad and verbally berate you because "you said this artist can't use birds in their art! Does everyone need permission to draw birds now??"
    And that's this whole situation, but it's a social media interior designer's designs being taken by another social media interior designer. They can both be colorful and quirky interior designers, that is a wide enough niche that they can have similar but different audiences. It's the "one person made a design and shared it online, and the other did the same design a week later without any credit, and got just as popular off of it." One person is creating the design themselves, and the other is using the design and not crediting it.
    Like I'm sorry, but "green squiggle art wall" or "every single inch of my room is a different gradient" is NOT a common DIY idea. We're not talking about "she painted her cabinets after I painted mine :(".

    • @GONEmypurpleflapjack
      @GONEmypurpleflapjack 10 місяців тому +6

      "It becomes an issue" No it doesn't lol. Like if no one could sell anything after someone else sold it everything would be a monopoly. Like I collect small glass animals and whenever I go to a fair with multiple lampworkers who make them, I usually buy 1 from each artist.
      Online artists are so obsessed with the idea that if someone else is getting attention it's at their expense, when even in a vacuum it's entirely possible no one would like their shit. But it's easier to blame other people and throw a tantrum that to make art.

It's so obvious Kaarin did not come up with these ideas herself, so why not just give Tay credit in her videos? (maybe unless you want all the credit? I dunno) If you are on social media and making money off of this, then give credit to the creator you took ideas from. Seems so easy🙄.

      I don't think those things are really comparable tbh, Taylor talking about being defrauded by her mother is conpletely normal and there were tons of people in the comments of that video who felt comforted by it because their parents did similar financially controlling or abusive things to them.

      Monster heads have been a thing since forever, if u ever been a diy person and u been on Pinterest said ideas are more than 10 years old, is just that these ideas kinda stayed within the diy sphere until a person outside the sphere talked about the drama

    • @xXxzAAa0aAAzxXx
      @xXxzAAa0aAAzxXx Рік тому +1

      as mentioned in the answer before, monster heads are pretty much a thing and as mentioned in the video, multicolored originally designed monster heads are not the same as dinosaur heads painted in one solid color. Maybe the gallery was inspired by tay's, since inspiration was admitted in general but I don't think that's a total ripoff, in my opinion the whole theme of that gradient room is way more of a direct copy (which would also be fine if it were properly credited and stuff).
      And while I agree that the monster heads are pretty sick, I can't help but note that they look pretty much like they could be based on illustrations by Skinner.

    • @Mikaracat
      @Mikaracat Рік тому +3

      The real funny thing is that the dinosaur head collection was from her old apartment. The ticktok was of Karin putting them up in her new house... So one could argue that she had a 'gallery wall' long before Tay.

    I'm kinda sick of internet people saying plagiarism as if they discovered the cure for cancer. as if """""originality""""""" in itself is worth anything.

    • @mothcub
      @mothcub  Рік тому +13

      It's interesting that you're positioning originality as meaningfully important here IF it meets the condition that the idea itself meets a certain level of extreme social significance, especially because whoever creates the cure for a major disease almost inevitably will not have that cure be massively attributed to them among the general population who use it. But also, because originality or attribution does matter to most (if not all) of the people who are against Tay here. It matters enough that it's extremely important to say that her ideas weren't original in the first place (it's owned nuanced topic that I didn't get into in thos vid)

    I honestly think the idea that creative concepts can be owned at all needs to be challenged more aggressively. As a matter of principle, I think this kind of copying is just fine. The copier here should've been open and unapologetic about it instead of lying and deflecting, but what are we even doing if we're supposedly trying to inspire others, but also monopolizing and claiming ownership of that inspiration?
    Ultimately, creators shouldn't be considered entitled to an audience or credit or profit. That's a controversial statement, but there are no shortage of creators in it for passion and fun and boredom other miscellaneous correct reasons. As the ultimate consumers of these ideas and videos, why shouldn't we adopt a morality that leads to the greatest copying and mixing and general creativity? There's already too much content for us to ever consume, and even if a number of creators leave because the space becomes inherently unprofitable, that will still be true. The internet would benefit from a return to a space where ordinary people share ideas because they can, not because they want to build a brand.
    Let plagiarism reign. It's better that way.

    I'm only at 8:22, so sorry if you address this later - but do you think part of the issue is that the one who supposedly copied has more followers that the one who posted that gobblydgook first? Could we say that an element of the public blasting likely had less to do with the level of offense she thought the "copier" perpetrated and more to do with, "hey all you people who are following this one should be following ME because i do all that stuff first and "better" because my boyfriend's monster heads are cooler?"
    They both have a fairly crap ton of followers, so maybe it doesn't really apply here. But there can be an issue for small content creators getting their ideas ripped off by those with a lot of followers desperate to stay relevant and collect add revenue or good algorithm or whatever their goal is that ultimately ends in fame and money and blatantly take the ideas of "the lil guy" without acknowledging them. And the small content creators don't get any of the notoriety or compensation of the "big fella." Just a thought...
