      Do you make custom pieces for customers or just create pieces for fun? I am wanting a men’s ring made hoping I can put a black opal in it that I am going to purchase soon. Is that something you could do?

    How do you stick the three settings together while you solder/fuse them? They seems fairly solidly connected before you even heat it up. Im attempting to learn enough to be able to make an engagement ring for my girlfriend, these videos help a lot!

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  10 місяців тому

      What a cool thing to do. Good luck and I’m happy that these videos are helping. I tack the settings together using a laser but before that, I used to tack it together with a tiny pin prick of solder to position it before I commit. Hope this helps - Jaco

    The gas burning that you see is the torch on pilot gas propane. Jewelers do that so they don’t have to keep lighting the torch as you keep working.

  • @theyakninja
    @theyakninja 6 місяців тому +1

    Why this kind of fusing with thin sheet is made on platinum but I've never seen it made with silver or gold? Because of firescale? Platinum does not tarnish?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  6 місяців тому

      It just reacts better. The nature of the metal allows for this method - it creates a seamless joint which makes it stand out. Today with laser technology however, the principle applies in much the same way. It allows to fill joints without solder in just about every metal which is ideal

    A lot of waste in Platinum in making the shank, wouldn’t it been better to make a wax shank then get it cast, just a thought.😊

    • @bernardblack6997
      @bernardblack6997 10 місяців тому +2

      Contray to how it may look in the video, theres really not much in the way of 'waste'. Filings are all reclaimable and easily cleaned and re-melted back into stock metal. Wax models and casting definately have their place though.

    • @johnsmalldridge6356
      @johnsmalldridge6356 10 місяців тому +1

      You still need extra metal and finishing in casting and you can end up with porosity which isn’t a problem with a hand made shank. Also even though casting is custom, it isn’t hand made.

      @@johnsmalldridge6356 The wax is?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  10 місяців тому +3

      Good point Chris, casting is always an option but quick answer is that I enjoy shaping the ring this way. It’s much quicker for me than carving and casting and the metal is more compressed too.
