What I love about your videos, is that you take the time to explain not only what you are doing, but why and how you are doing it. This is the only star setting video, that I have seen, where it is explained that the securing bead is raised with a graver with a more acute angle than the one used to form the star. Thank you.

If I may ask, do you need to re-sharpen your gravers mid setting for something like this? Engraving was not part of my course and I have been reading a lot about it to figure out what to buy first and the only thing everybody agrees on is that the should be perfectly sharpened 😂

So just go it and see how your metal responds. Usually I don’t have to sharpen with something like this but when cutting harder metals or working with harder gravers I usually have to keep attending to the tip. Just start cutting - your experience counts a lot and keep an eye out for some good guidance books or videos. It’s a world on its own. Good luck.

I'd love to see what you'd do with flush setting or bezel setting. As a new jeweler it has been one of my favorite settings to learn and Is so satisfying.

Superb video thank you. I was going to farm out the star setting on a gold signet ring I cast for a customer but your video gave me the nerve to go for it. I star set one diamond and one blue spinel then flush set the smaller diamonds into a celestial scene. Thank you, my settings weren't as sharp or clinical as yours but it was totally believable!

Hi Jennifer, and thank you for reaching out. The amount of metal needed to lift the claw up for a 5mm stone depends a lot on how many claws you plan to raise. If your stone sits tight, you can get away with almost decorative claws and use very little metal. I would recommend at least a millimeter distance at a steep angle to secure your stone. I haven’t done any engraving yet and am struggling to work out what shape graver to use for the star part. You say it is V-shaped. Is it a particular size? What shape & size graver did you use for the beads? So hard to know what to buy first when starting out and don’t have much money…
It’s a pleasure - I started with some hand gravers when I first got into it all. I would get a flat and an v-shaped one somewhere in the middle of whatever they selling and get some practice. When you get the hang of it, get the next one. You will know which one through practice because you will start to need it. But you need to get comfortable with the working and sharpening and resistance first. It’s a world of its own full of fun. Good luck 👍🏻
That looks great! In my opinion, star setting is hard to get right; it looks untidy unless done properly, but I'm not sure what makes it look good. It's not about accuracy, I guess, because, for example, ebethscottdesign's rings look fantastic even though the setting is not perfectly accurate. I've tried it a couple of times, and it was garbage, so I want to learn this. However, I don't have a pneumatic engraving set, and maybe you have some advice for me. I have some hand gravers and a chisel handpiece for a pendant motor. I don't see anyone using this kind of handpiece, which could mean it's not worth working with, and the grip is definitely different from usual handles. Also, it seems to me that graver skills are essential for a jeweller. What is the best way to try and learn until I can afford to buy a pneumatic one? Thank you.
Great video as always. I've been looking into pulse gravers, what model is the one you use. Expensive I know but needed for work like this. I've practiced with push gravers for a while and it's not an easy skill to master!
Yes Paul, they are pretty pricey. I’m using the Lindsay engraver which I’ll highly recommended. I’ve only had mine for about 5 years now so for the 25 years before that it was all push engraving and setting. It takes some time to get control but you definitely can do without if you didn’t want to spend the cash. It does speed things up though so you can get through work a lot faster. Plus it’s a fun toy 😂

Hey, we’ve just done a little video on the topic of engraving which I hope you may find informative and useful. I am using a Lindsay AirGraver - it is driven by its own movement with just a little guidance and a tiny bit of pressure from my side. Hope this helps. 🤙
I am using silver in this case, which is very soft - especially compared to brass. I would try as many different materials as possible because each material will give you a different resistance.
