I think you missed the historical poetry here. Although this is a bio-pic, their relationship is a Metaphor for The Nation of Japan 🇯🇵. He buries his head in his work to save his love, his home, his land. While she is painfully understanding, perhaps lying to herself and him, for the sake of his Terrible Ambitions. Both know the minuet they are dancing, the roles forced upon them.
We in the west spend far to much time seeing individuals while fighting for Broad strokes of abstraction. After some fifty years on Earth, I’ve come to see Large Spirits walking as Crowds, acting as Movements.
Keep Moving Forward, look even deeper … it’s all more than you can imagine.

The Wind Rises is my favourite Ghilbli Film.. It makes me happy to see videos where people such as you, review this underrated film. Not to mention, this film was Hayao Miyazaki's most personal film. Lots of his ideologies are integrated in this film, and it really makes it a lot better. Thank you for this video, you made such an amazing review! 10/10 💯❤

I should hope you didn't learn any BS coffee tin ad reels about "1950's marriage" in high school or any school. That's purely for the purposes of division.
It's only natural that if artists like Nolan and Miyazaki learn of the real history, they will draw similarly from that well to inspire similar messages, and there's more than TWO people who happened to. Studio Ghibli has been delivering these sorts of stories even before Miyazaki bought it, then named TopCraft, telling grand stories about war and cyclical violence like The Flight of Dragons.
Meanwhile Spielberg's Empire of the Sun starring Christian Bale also tells a highly humanizing story about warring individuals, that has since been largely forgotten and seemingly throttled, which I can imagine would be something Steven isn't fond of pushing hard on, during family gatherings.

I personally don't have a problem with the lack of representation of the actual effects of the bomb in oppenheimer. I find that in a story like the one being told in both these two films it's not necessary to portray the full extent of the machine's destruction, but instead the full extent of the creator's inner dilemma. I do dislike Oppenheimer in the sense that after a masterful hour and a half of building and testing the bomb, the film gets caught up in political drama so over-complicated that it genuinely doesn't allow Oppie's dilemma to flourish.
I feel like Nolan gave up on that second half. The imaginary hallucinations where Oppie saw his coworkers' skin peel off their faces looked super lame in comparison to the rest of visual effects in the film.

Stumbled upon this by chance - great video! I haven't seen Oppenheimer, but I enjoyed The Wind Rises, and it's definitely up there on the list of Ghibli films for me. Don't get the backlash to it either, given the fact that it's 'guy who wants to make planes ends up making planes at the worst historical time' and not because he wants to help Japan do war crimes or anything of the sort. Who knows.

The US being vocal about The Wind Rise not talking about Pearl Harbor or the Japanese role during WWII is such... an american (= self-centered) thing to do. Miyazaki doesn't make movies for an american audience, or for the american government. The Wind Rises ISN'T about the role of Japan during WWII or Pearl Harbor. Also, I bet the US wouldn't be as vocal about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagazaki. This is pure propaganda, and we are so lucky Miyazaki is independent from these influences (most movies today aren't).
The context is different for Oppenheimer, like you said: the subject of the movie IS the creation of the deadliest weapon in human history, and it's talking the POV and drama of the creator (not the millions of victims, who almost disappear in their masses and anonymity). I understand how that can seem insulting (it's like movies or tv shows about real life serial killers, which focus on the complexity and "sex appeal" of the serial killer and disrespect their victims). Not saying it's a bad movie tho, but we must open our eyes (and it doesn't help it's an american big budget, big comm, movie too)
