Why Dune’s Cinematography Feels Real
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
This is my video essay on Dune : Part Two! This was one of my favorite movie-going experiences of all time - especially because of the cinematography (which upon analysis, was surprisingly intimate). I really wanted to explore the humanity present in so many of the shots of Dune 2, as well as how other art forms contributed to these films’ looks. I hope this video shines a new light on close-up...

    😔 Nothing is the absence of Something. Often these solidify the tone of the world … or ‘Other-Eyes’ viewing the Something in the story. My favorites are the Lamps lighting the space, usually done in high detail, they offer a breath of physicality, and sometimes; a presence of Theosophy. Like how the water clock reminds us of time, and the constant stream of grace surrounding us.

      This is such a beautiful comment ❤️ I completely agree, Ghibli’s use of lamps in spaces provides such a nice sense of warmth and comfort, they always catch my eye. Thank you for the comment!

    I adore the "nothing" shots as they tend to stay with me far longer than the actual story. We often hear that every single scene needs to matter/add something to the story and if it does neither it has to be cut. Yet I believe that such shots add not only depth, but substance, too, and create as sense of a world that is brimming with life and is lived in. It feels like a little pause so that we - the audience - can take a breath before the story continues. It is a shame that aspiring directors are constantly discouraged to sprinkle in a few of such scenes in their films. P.S. just like the other videos of yours: well done :)

    • @elshin_
      @elshin_ 16 днів тому

      I totally agree. The “nothing shot” concept was really the seed of this video idea, and the bulk of what I wanted to convey. If you haven’t seen it, the Ghibli film ‘Only Yesterday’ is full of these (a huge part of why I love that film). Give it a watch if you have the time & haven’t seen it! And thanks so much for the comment, means a lot 😄

    Insightful and thoughtful take. I'm looking for the way to enrich the story but still remain invisible. Simplicity, serving the narrative, and those moments of 'just being' that Miyazaki shows us are all great things to consider for good storytelling in film.

    How do you do that blooming blur thing? When the bokeh gets bigger?

    • @elshin_
      @elshin_ 2 місяці тому

      It was actually a way easier process than I thought (and I’m so glad someone pointed it out 🙏). I essentially just masked out the subject, inverted the mask so the bokeh was selected, and changed the properties to make it glow/get bigger. I had that over the original clip fading in and out to make the effect. Let me know if you have any other questions, love talking about editing ❤️

    I found it so interesting, the rage over this movie's supposed emasculation. As a woman, after watching it, the primary emotion i felt for Ken (after laughing at his brief stab at alpha bro-ness, when all he really wanted was his Casa Mojo House and also Horses. Let him have the horses!!) was not derision but Compassion. Actual compassion. And empathy, and the desire to make him know that he has so much value as a person and a friend. I think it's so sad that instead of empathising with Ken's journey, so many dudes apparently saw his emotional lows and emotional development as...i suppose, Unmanly.

    • @elshin_

    In part 1 when Paul sees Holy War vision I love the shot when he is staring into space. Some of the shots have me in trance and later I couldn't recall like when he sits during his classic speech scene I couldn't recall that scene until I saw it for the fifth time. It was so hypnotic. I think it has to do with the framing as well as the performance. To add to that I think that was a display of ingenious acting skill, he was Charismatic and Terrifying at the same time.

    • @elshin_
      @elshin_ 2 місяці тому

    i always felt that the Dune films, esp the first part, had such a Sparseness to them -- and i thought it was because of the grand vastness of some of the sets & some of the minimalist interiors. but now i realise it's also a sparseness of dialogue. brilliance

      @K.C-2049 Totally valid; idk if i can choose -- i think i have a personal fondness for Pt 1 because it gave me plenty of the characters and the world without causing me the emotional devastation that Pt 2 did (which of course is thanks in large part to what had been set up in Pt 1).
