  • NBA Legends explain how good Jason Kidd was. Jason Kidd was the best point guard even better than allen iverson, steve nash and gary payton.
When Kidd entered the NBA in 1994, he immediately became one of the most gifted and respected point guards in the game. His ability to see the floor and pull off dazzling passes made him one of the sport’s brightest young stars. However, Kidd-who was defined so clearly early on in his career-never stopped evolving. By the time he retired in 2013, Kidd was much more than just a clever passer. He racked up rebounds with such regularity that the triple-double (double figures in any three statistical categories, most often points, rebounds, and assists) became his signature. His outside shooting, once an object of ridicule, had been completely overhauled, making him one of the league’s most accurate long-range threats. The cavalry leader had given way to a wise floor general.
Kidd was a product of Oakland, California-a West Coast standout at a time when New York City ruled basketball. He blazed through the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the University of California at Berkeley and was selected with the second pick of the 1994 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks. After two years in Dallas, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he cemented himself as a perennial All-Star and a standout defender. Kidd’s true value, however, became most apparent in 2001, when the Suns dealt him to the New Jersey Nets. Kidd helped engineer one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the league’s history, taking the long-moribund Nets to consecutive NBA finals in his first two seasons with the team (losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs in 2002 and 2003, respectively). Kidd was traded back to the Mavericks during the 2007-08 season and then spearheaded the 2008 “Redeem Team” that brought an Olympic men’s basketball gold medal to the United States after the national team failed to capture gold at the previous Games (he also had won an earlier gold medal in 2000). By this time, his advancing age was showing: his blistering first step was long gone, as was his ability to stick with any guard in the league on defense. But Kidd, whose intelligence had always been his hallmark, undertook the unlikely task of becoming a legitimate shooter. When the Mavericks went on their improbable 2011 title run, it was in large part due to their three-point snipers. Outside of franchise player Dirk Nowitzki, Kidd was arguably the most important contributor to the team’s championship. After a disappointing 2011-12 season in Dallas, Kidd signed with the New York Knicks, with whom it became apparent that the ride was over. He helped the team get much better, but on the floor he was running out of gas. It was time to transition, seamlessly, to coaching: he retired after one season with the Knicks and became the Nets’ head coach days later. Kidd finished out his career third all-time in career triple-doubles as well as second in both assists and steals. His 19-year career was equal parts flash and substance, a legacy to which young point guards coming into the league aspire. That Kidd was able to adapt to his advancing age and still help teams win was a testament not only to his skill but to the selfless drive to make those around him better.
After one tumultuous season of coaching the Nets, Kidd sought control of the team’s basketball operations only to see his advances rebuffed by upper management, who then traded his coaching rights to the Milwaukee Bucks. Kidd was successful early on during his Bucks tenure, taking young and versatile Milwaukee squads to the play-offs in two of his first three seasons with the team (with both appearances ending in first-round eliminations). However, his failure to build a consistent winner around emerging superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and his unusual in-game strategy frustrated both fans and Bucks management, and he was fired in the middle of the 2017-18 season. Later in 2018 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

I grew up in this era and I remember Kidd being the consensus best PG of the era. Payton was a little before Kidd, but one Kidd hit the scene, he replaced GP pretty quickly. Kidd is responsible for the biggest record swing in NBA history with the Nets. That team was pretty trash and they went to the finals twice in a row. The things people say about Chris Paul today are true x10 for Jason Kidd.

Gary Payton was a fantastic PG but I'm gonna go with Kidd. His prime lastet longer and he turned every team he played for into a contender. David Robinson said it in the video, he made every player around him better. I think Miami could've won that championship with another PG, with the Mavs I'm not that sure. Of course his career stats are great but he was one of those guys who were great beyond those stats. He was a guy who just would do the right thing, make the right descision in 95% of the time. I can't remember mistakes he made and that is a quality that is completely underrated in Basketball.

Still wasn't enough. Kidd and VC wasn't a complete enough team when the East in the mid 2000s had the Pistons who were more of a complete team, the Heat had Wade on the come up along with good talents to play alongside him and Lebron's Cavs were on the rise. Then if the Nets were lucky to make it out of the EC bloodbath, the titans of the West were a completely different class of monsters. Kidd should know as he did make the Finals in the 2000s with the Nets but when it came to meet their WC opponents, they were outclassed in overall talent.

Ive been watching NBA basketball since 1974. Some of my fondest basketball moments was when Jason Kidd was on the Nets. This man single handledly made the team better overnight. He made Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin better, they actually OWE him money when they got their bags 💰.
He made passes that were on unreal and he never walked the ball up. Always kept the defense on their heels. One time i was watching the Nets and i said to myself...." the only way he makes this pass is if he bowls it like a bowler....and thats EXACTLY what he did!!!!
The most underrated thing about him was the clutch plays he made. The knock on him was he couldn't shoot. I saw Jason hit many clutch threes when the game was on the line or to stop a run. To me one of the top clutch players, but arguably the 2nd best PGs of all time .....PURE POINT.

Not much more to be said about his talent but as a kid, I used to send cards to guys hoping for anything back. Kidd in his rookie year is the only guy who sent anything back..signed my card, added 3 more of his college cards also autographed and a letter thanking me for being a fan. So yeah I guess I was partially bribed into him being my guy from the get go but to this day, greatest PG I’ve ever seen.

I'd take Kidd over just about any other PG. Give Kidd the same team Magic had around him, and Kidd also would've won multiple titles. Or let Kidd play his whole career with Karl Malone, you can't convince me he wouldn't have won a ring in that situation. Then you've got Kidd's backup, Nash, who flat out was a total liability on defense. It's hard to pick one guy over another though, because they were all unbelievably great players.

I think he's had an interesting redemption story of sorts. Won't comment much on his off court life but on court, he definitely is quite the tactician. His stint in Milwaukee was hit or miss but he continued to improve his craft being part of different coaching staffs. Including the Lakers 2020 one under Vogel where they won the chip there too. Much like it took some maturity for him to get better as a young player leaving Dallas and coming back in 2011 to help one with Dirk, his journey as a NBA coach that took him back to Dallas has been a very positive one and he continues to learn and get the most out of his talented players.

He has never played his year, always 1 to 3 levels higher. Funny enough, he was a hell of a baseball player as well. My little bro was on that 92 team that won the state chip. Games during off season at Cal, pro am, playing at Bushrod, my father's park Grove St, Greg Brown, we knew he was going to be who he is today. And yes he studied angles like no other, we had a talk and session like that at practice one day.

He should have 1 MVP how he would single handedly make teams waaaaaaaay better than what they were with only him joining the team. Jason Kidd was a triple-doubles machine. For example: 25 pts, 12 assists, 11 rebounds. Even though he was a point guard, he was able to grab offensive rebounds which doesn't happen to plenty of point guards on a regular basis. Kidd was 6'4 and that's pretty tall for his position. Not like LeBron or Magic's height when they played the point guard position at 6 foot 9.
