He's been growing so fast, his muscular mass and coordination can't keep up with this crazy rate, that has been the main challenge in his life so far. The minor adjustments of a normal teenager growing up are major adjustments for him, years after years. But he is working so if his body can stop growing up, his athletic abilities should develop to match his height.
I bet he must eat a lot but how hungry is he really? That's the million dollars question.

Since Porzingus came in the league.. around that time, I started saying that it will soon be common for teams to have Point Centers and eventually the rosters will only consist of 7 + footers at all positions who are athletic AF. Can shoot deep consistently. Have handles. And finish at the rim with the best of them.
If you're 6ft or even 6ft 2 point guard, you're now a liability on defense. Modern PGs they perfer them to be 6ft 5, 6'6.
Eventually it will be all 7' players with a similar skill set of wembenyama, Chet, Porzingus, etc.
Eventually there will be a very good coordinated 8 ft player, with some athleticism ... Who will play in the NBA. They are getting taller and taller... And more and more skilled.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. All of this shows you the perspective I am writing from. He looks pretty good. At 7'9", he can actually take dribbles, and do the step step dunk. Take someone from my era, Dale Davis, who was "only" 6'10", and is one NBA player who could not get the ball on a fast break, and do a simple bounce bounce step step dunk. Ervin Johnson (of the Sonics and Nuggets) also couldn't do this. However, Rioux looks light, and like he would be pushed around by Shaquille O'Neal. BUT, in the NBA in 2024, we don't have Shaq, Hakeem Olajuwon. In fact, even the best power forwards and centers are Stretch 4's and 5's. He's certainly intriguing. What I really like about him, is that while he's a good shot blocker and dunker, he NEVER talks trash. I really like and respect skilled athletes, who let their game speak for itself, without braggodocio. I really wish him well.

But if I’m being honest I’m not sure is Strength is as necessary in today s NBA With everyone being Face up and Rim runner styles C. His biggest concerns for me will be his perimeter defense. But as a coach I will go into it knowing to give him more help with the fence on the perimeter and keep him down low. And I would also like to see better lateral move them out of him. Because I’m like in high school you just can’t sit in the paint in the NBA anymore.

IMG Academy is a high school for future pro sports players. Rioux is playing back up big because that is his most likely pro out come. Same for Zack Edey at IMG, but now he's a starter. Rioux is being drilled in how to shoot the outside jumper in practice. Not in games yet. Hopefully at Florida he'll be shooting from 15 feet.

    • @davidhillman1257
      @davidhillman1257 9 днів тому

No one -- least of all the tallest player in the world -- should be shooting from 15 feet. That's a recipe for losing. Even the best shooters in the world are not sufficiently accurate from 15 feet to be more efficient than the layups and threes that well-coached players shoot. And if Rioux develops his game at all, no one will be able to prevent him from getting those high-percentage shots at the rim.

Historically once they get over 7’2” they’re more susceptible to injuries like foot, ankle, knee, and hips. That’s a lot of height and weight to be putting on those body parts and they end up breaking, tearing, pulling, etc… Heck really only Kareem at 7’2” had a long career being that tall and playing a lot of minutes. Who else? Muresan, Yao, Sampson, Bowie, etc… Even shorter players like 7’ Greg Oden still had numerous injury issues from being that tall.

He's tall, he does have potential but he needs to improve his footwork, he probably won't get much playing time at Florida his first two seasons but I believe if he keeps working harder and harder on his game, he could have a solid career in the pros.

  • @YellowSkarmory

Even if he doesn't get minutes at Florida, being at a power conference school should give him plenty of opportunity to improve. Tacko Fall comes to mind, but I'm thinking he'll be more athletic if he can stay healthy. Should get time in D1 ball somewhere eventually.

Looks like a well proportioned big man! Should keep working out- looking to ad muscle and especially lower body strength. But being 7 ft. 9 inches and fairly smooth / not a spaz--- can even shoot free throws with a nice stroke. The basketball looks like a little orange in his hands, it's crazy. Sky is the limit with this kid. Imagine if he learned to shoot 3's- would be unstoppable.

Interesting that he's quite agile for someone 3" shy of 8 feet. Wonder what he'll look like at 25? 8 feet 360 lbs possibly. Hoping for both he and his family that he can remain mostly healthy. Super big people are typically plagued with more physiological issues than the general population. Fingers crossed. He's not as massive as someone I may or may not be related to though. That's a fellow Canadian from Nova Scotia who lived two centuries ago by the name of Angus MacAskill. He was 7'9" but weighed at his peak around 500 lbs. And he was reported to also be insanely strong. One story says that he could lift an adult horse over a 4 ft fence. Yikes!

I keep waiting for someone to invent a time machine and go back and bring Angus to the current day to play center for Canada's national basketball team.
No opponent would get near the rim.
Shaq and Yao Ming certainly were never nearly as big and strong as horses so I think that Angus would push them around like they were teenage boys.
Angus had the biggest chest ever recorded in a non-obese person.
That's a lot of upper body strength.

Does anyone know if he has stopped growing or at least has his height gain slowed down? I ask as there is a disease called Acromegaly that can cause a huge amount of problems over time, in teenagers the first sign is abnormal height. Its been well documented in people with extreme height. This can usually be treated but early detection is key as that will also prevent the symptoms getting worse and reduce the chance of complications. I hope he has been tested.
