I once knew an _objectively_ ugly pony.
His head was like an axe with his neck like the handle. His ears flopped sideways. His rump was sloped downwards like a kid's slide. His legs were too sturdy for his dainty body, and his hooves too small for his sturdy legs. When he trotted through long grass, you expected him to leave a trail of knitted grass stalks behind him, so round-and-about was his front action. He was just over 13 hh and about 7 years old.
He had the kindest, softest eye of any horse I have ever seen, and had been bought for an almost non-verbal child (the child flapped hands energetically whenever it saw a horse or pony, and their first recognisable words were 'ony! ony!' said eagerly when they were taken to a therapeutic riding session for the first time), with severe global developmental delays and autism.
When the child was introduced to this pony, the child's father told me that he and his wife both cried when their child spoke clearly and said 'you name Ginger'.
I can assure anyone who is wondering, that this pony was considered the very epitome of beauty by the entire extended family, and everyone who knew them, despite his superficial, outward, awkward appearance.

Just with a spouse, if they treat you well you will learn to love them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so that good horse absolutely will be beautiful.
That said, “we” bought a pretty horse. He brings my wife great joy, but does not behave for me.

Guilty as charged. As a beginner rider I chose on how they looked. As they say you eat with your eyes. 3 pretty failures for me before a got my self a plain honest horse. This horse taught me so much & I achieved a lot on him. I always wondered if I’d had started with him first maybe I would have gone even further, as my pretty ones definitely were the wrong ones for me & set my confidence back.

My favorite horse of all time was not registered, was not pretty,. He was from a ranch in Southern New Mexico. I lived north of Taos, New Mexico and rode him on a visit to a friend in Albuquerque. She had lots of off track thourobreds that she retrained as hunter/jumpers. This horse was not one of those. A friend had sent him to her to be sold. At the time, I was looking for a horse for my husband, something slow moving, sure footed and not prone to drama. Monte had a kind quality about him. When I saddled and bridled him he was more than cooperative. I took him home to our mountain. As is often the case, my expectation that my spouse would want to ride the mountain trails with me did not materialize. Monte became my horse of choice. Why? Because he always was ready to climb the hills, cross the streams, pay attention to my desired route, and put his feet in the safest place to protect both himself and me. My German shepherds went along on the trail with us and Monte considered himself part of their pack. Once I heard a mountain lion scream and while Monte took note of it, he did not panic. He was not pretty, he was just the best partner I had ever ridden. I can't help but think that his time on a working ranch made him the best horse I have ever known.

My current older mare has seen bears, deer, range cattle and pushing them, can take me back to the trailer totally different than how we came . She does NOT tolerate anyone else but me..ex show, introduced to so many new experiences by our riding. We work together...I will not pass her on to anyone. Difficult! YES but to me...the best. Like dogs, we often get the 4 legged we need, not always the one we want! Thank you for your wisdom and teaching.

Totally agree. I've only owned one pretty horse, a Morgan that my sister-in-law and I both competed with. And luckily that horse had a good mind as well. But most of my horses have been working ranch quarter horses that were so wonderfully solid and trustworthy.
As a teen I had a special relationship with one 12 year old sorrel quarter horse. I babysit 3 sisters, the oldest and youngest had intellectual disabilities. I could put all three of those girls on that horse and she would just walk around in big circles while I sat and watched. If one of them started to fall off she would stop. But my younger brother who liked to show off what he didn't know, would get on her and she generally found a way to lose him.
She loved to run before a summer rainstorm and if one was approaching and I didn't go get her, she would jump the fence and come to the house to get me. Never ran off on her own, just came to a window and started calling.
An absolutely amazing partner that no one called pretty. Her soul was beautiful.

Years ago we had to move away from the farm because of my work. My daughter told me that she wanted to take riding lessons. We got her lined up with a trainer and about 6 months later she told me that she found a horse she wanted to buy tried to put her off but she won out. I went to check out the horse and found out that he was a stud. I told her not no but hell no, she was 11 years old. About a month later she said that she was going to buy him and I finally gave in. As it turned out together they were quite the match. They would play together like a kid with a dog playing. He never balked at anything she asked him to do. After we were able to move back to the farm and she started college she started to 4:08 Team Pen with him and did very well. Was able pay her own way with the winnings. I couldn’t have been more proud of her and her horse. They were inseparable.

A GREAT VIDEO! When my daughters were riding I was shocked at how many horsey parents bought pretty, well bred ponies for their children to ride. These ponies simply were too much for their riders to manage; a dangerous situation to expose any child to. The 2 best ponies in my life were both very plain looking bays. One was my first pony so very kind and willing and would jump anything I asked her too, even when she couldn't see over the top. The second was my daughters first pony who rotated around the extended family for his whole life because he was so trustworthy. He had hooves like iron and had never been shod. He wouldn't go any faster than the riders ability. Both ponies had a long list of requests to buy. I owe them so much.

Very good information. My first horse was not put together very well but he only spooked one time during the time I owned him. He was a former pick up horse from Alberta. Totally fearless. He went any direction I pointed him, The rest of my horses were sorrel horses with very good minds. You can't ride the looks you ride the mind. I've always been a trail rider & its necessary to ride a horse with a good mind to ride trails.

Had a retired pickup horse named Jim in an equine assisted therapy program I worked at for years. We let the horses pick the child they wanted to work with instead of the kids picking the horse.
Jim was huge but not assertive with the other horses in the herd so when he pushed other horses out of the way to get to a child new to the program, we knew there were deep issues involved. He always picked the most damaged kids and helped them grow so much.

I’m looking for my next heart horse, mine first one died 12 years ago and she was my best friend and confidant. We rode hours together and she only dumped me twice. Both were legit too-I was riding her in the flooded fields and a duck exploded under us and I went swimming and she looked at me like I was crazy 😅 the second time she refused to cross the creek and just fought me. I got dumped and had to walk home that time. Come to find out, there was a cougar holed up in the trees across the creek. Man I miss her so much.

Brown Betty was a double bagger. She wore a bag so you didn't see how ugly she was. The second bag was FOR YOUR head so if hers fell off, you still couldnt see how ugly she was. You could trust her to take care of any kid you put on her back. They learned to ride. They learned the joys of bring around horses. She was 22, pig eyed, roman nosed, mule ears, ewe necked, with high withers, a sway back rafter hips, cow hocks 13.2 hands and pure gold.😊

I call my Lusitano gelding a true unicorn. I went to look at him because, in his sales video when he was four-year-old, he was ridden in a dressage arena, and a motorcycle zoomed past the edge of the arena. He didn’t lift his head or bat an eye. He has this uncanny ability to assess threats and dismiss them immediately. He has given me so much confidence. He is 18 now and slowing down. We still do dressage work twice a week, to keep him supple. The rest of the time we saunter about on the trails, or camp in the mountains and desert. I’ll never find another one like him.

I had a plain sorrel mare grade QH with 3 bars bloodline in the mid 70s. The ranch she was on gave her to me for nothing as it was a drought year & no feed to winter some of their older stock. She looked just like Lucy. Her name was Cricket & she was probably close to 100lbs underweight, delivered to us in the back of a pickup with stockade on the side. I was 15. She was 20. Spent that 1st year riding bareback until I earned enough money to buy a saddle for $35.00 & we joined 4H where we learned western pleasure, Trail & stock where she excelled. Loved to cut cows & her favorite sport was polebending. I had her until the age of 32 where I had to put her down due to lameness. I went on to other horses but none like cricket. We trusted eachother & could read eachothers mind. I will never forget her!

Years ago while at a show at Old Salem Farm we walked through the barn looking for the million dollar jumper, The Natural. Couldn't find any horse that seemed to fit that description. When he was

    It’s all about the brain!
It doesn’t matter what a horse looks like as long as it’s sound, serviceable, and suits your purpose. People miss out on a lot of really fantastic horses just because of their color!
When I’m looking at a horse, I’m looking primarily at their brain. I want to see if they think and problem solve, or just react. Remember what you should be looking for is a partner. A horse that you can get along with the minimal amount of frustration happening on either side.

I bought a weedy plain bay thoroughbred off the local track for $700, rode him for a few years, and sold him to a friend. He was schooling advanced level eventing at 19 and only retired because his owner went to vet school. One of the best I've ever owned and there wasn't a speck of chrome on him, lol

However, there is a caveat. Some of these conformation conditions can be life limiting or limit the kind of work the horse can do.

When it comes to breeding a horse with a fancy colour might be exused faults that wouldn't be accepted if it was a plain colour.

I don't think I've ever seen an ugly horse. I love black horses, cats, dogs. But thats just a color thing. I woukdnt select on that alone. There has to be affability.

Or learn to train the pretty horse and make it amazing.. I’ve been overwhelmed by pretty but it made me a better horse person to teach pretty how to be a good horse. I’ve also had really good ugly horse, he moved beautifully and was well trained carried himself gorgeous even though he was one of those ugly types of Appys.

Many people look at color and flash first for sure, even people that should know better! Chrome is overrated, one more thing to keep clean lol.
Good confirmation is a definite plus, but I don't discount a horse that's trained for the job I want just because of a few structural dings.
Folks newer to horses usually start out with the young pretty ones instead of the older, plain safe ones and find out the error the hard way.
I'm 58, been riding all my life and I look for those 20 year olds to ride.

Great advice and video! Pretty is as pretty does. I am in a weird position. When people meet or see my horse, the first thing they say is he is cute! He has some unusual markings. While he is attractive it is actually his brain, kindness, willingness and tolerance that make him cute. When we found each other 8 years ago, no one would have described him as cute even though his outward appearance hasn't changed. Hardwork and training has made him cute.

One of the best horses I ever owned was a Navi pony bought for my 7 year old son. Great baby sitter until an experienced rider got on his back. Wow, whole nother horse.

My best horse lve ever had is a gray...my very least favorite color. But she was the sweetest girl and when l had to choose between a super flashy black and white paint gelding and her, l chose her! Best decision lve ever made! Turns out that black and white paint is the calmest most awesome horse too, but lm glad l have my girl...even tho shes a mare with a white tail...the worst! Haha 😂

First thing I always say about my Moriesian Mare Nyobi, that I currently have, is that she is the kindest soul I have ever met.
She is so sweet that the person I bought her from gave me a 30 day money back, love her or return her guarantee. We have been together five and a half years now.
The best horse I ever rode was a butt ugly Appaloosa mare who was a horse at one of those ride by the hour places. I have no idea how such a well trained horse got on that string. She was so in tune with me that she literally felt like another part of my body. Friends used to ridicule me for requesting that "ugly thing" until they saw how well she handled. If I would of had the money, I would of bought her in a heartbeat. She was not at all pretty, but she was pure gold to ride.

Yes so very true, I have chosen horses for their eye appeal and it is not always the best way to make a selection. Same goes for super attractive people, seems the world around them in general treat them better and give them more opportunities based on their physical appearance. Hence a good horse may never get the opportunities that the fancy one will. I think Lucy is a nice looking mare.

Lots of money was spent by people who had to have that pretty horse only to find out that pretty isn’t always best. I agree Malinda. Both of these things show how shallow some people can be. Nothing wrong with having a pretty horse but there has to be more.

My best horse was not pretty (quite ugly) she had a roman nose and big ears. But she threw the best foals only one of the foals had her roman nose and big ears, I retained that foal and he turned out to be as good, if not better than his mother.
