Met Roger Moore once at a party in London as a kid...That was when The Living Day Lights was just released a month ago and all the marketing was Timothy Dalton centric that he is the new Bond and all that...this might sound silly but as a kid I believed that James Bond was real and Roger Moore was him...I approached Roger with excitement saying " Mr. Bond, Mr. Bond...what are you doing here ? Do you know that a man named Timothy has been impersonating you for a month ?" To which he replied with this extraordinary charm " Pipe down kid !" Then he leaned forward and whispered in my ear " I know kid, I told him to do so." I was shocked but I whispered back in his ear "But why Mr. Bond ?"...He whispered back " To fool the bad guys my dear lad !" Then he winked at me and went back to mingle with the guests....I was over the moon...I met him a couple of times after that and we had a laugh about that encounter at the party...but till this day he remains my James Bond ❤️

That’s really wholesome, Roger Moore is truly the fan’s Bond. But I must wonder if he realised that you actually thought he was Bond or if he thought you were joking. Either way, he seems like an awesome guy.

It’s crazy that in the DAF theatrical trailer, Connery’s “Bond, James Bond” introduction is not sped up like it is in the final film. I have no idea why they thought speeding up his voice was a good idea. His delivery at normal speed was perfectly satisfactory

I've always hated that. How did that terrible bit of audio make it through the entire editing process, into the final cut, and all the way to theaters and no one said "uhhh we need to rerecord the dialogue because this sounds god awful."? It's a bummer that that's Connery's first scene where he's fully on camera after he was gone for four years and the only time in the movie he said "Bond. James Bond." Someone has to have been fired over that haha.

16:35 I do find it frustrating the end duel in 'Golden Gun' was cut down [and the uncut version is probably now lost] given that film has a lot of stuff that doesn't need to be there [it probably should have been a much tighter 90mins rather than 2 hours] yet they cut down the finale the film is building too.

Interesting that they used the B. J. Arnau version of Live and Let Die in the trailer over the Paul McCartney & Wings version. You’d think they’d make more of the fact that they had one of the most famous musicians in the world doing the title song, rather than just going: “Paul McCartney wrote this song, you know, former member of the most popular band around and one of the best singer/songwriters of this generation - well, here’s someone else singing it.”
Maybe it was Saltzman & Broccoli’s request? I’ve read they wanted to have a black singer sing the song but only went with McCartney because they were contractually obliged to and that Arnau appearing in the film to sing the song was a compromise, or something like that.

    • @DafyddBrooks

@@DafyddBrooks They wanted Solitare to be played by a Black actress (Diana Ross was one suggestion) but UA said that a lot of Cinema Chains in Southern America would boycott it, as would South Africa. Ultimately they got some way with Rosie being Black. But of course she's not in the film much, turns out to be a traitor, Bond interrogates her at gunpoint only after having sex with her, and she's murdered.
Apparently the producers weren't into McCartney's Live And Let Die, until they were persuaded it being by him would generate a lot of publicity. I guess they really did think you needed earmuffs to listen to McCartney.

In both "Live & Let Die" trailers they did some word play with more & Moore. Their way of introducing Roger Moore as Bond no doubt.
Of course "Moonraker" was originally meant to be "For Your Eyes Only". But after "Star Wars" they went with the Fleming novel that has a space theme. & as you pointed out, that meant adding the "Star Wars" crawl.

The Spy Who Loved Me couldn't have been less like the book if they tried. Name one thing from the novel besides the character of James Bond that's in that movie. Great rundown of these trailers. This isn't really related but it's fitting that Moonraker came out at the end of the 70s because to me it marks the end of the early era of James Bond. Now in reality License To Kill is a much more fitting example for the dividing point of the eras because the franchise went on a six year hiatus and no one except for Desmond Llewellyn came back but Moonraker somehow feels even more so. Not only was it the last full length Bond novel to be adapted until Casino Royale, it's the last one to feature Bernard Lee as M, the last one to be directed by Lewis Gilbert, the last one where the villain wants world domination, the last really campy one, and the last one to feature a Shirley Bassie song. Even with Roger Moore coming back in For Your Eyes Only, there's just something about Moonraker that feels so much like the producers are telling us "it's the end of this era of Bond movies". Anyone else agree or am I off base here? LOL.
Also watching your videos on the trailers for the Daniel Craig movies, the Pierce Brosnan movies, and the 80s movies makes me aware of how few James Bond movies have been made in my lifetime (I was born in 1990) and just how many they made in 60s, 70s, and 80s. I know Fleming only wrote twelve novels and two short story collections but the producers have shown they can find good original scripts to adapt or they could go to the Bond novels written by the other authors. No matter how you justify it, it's crazy that from 1962 to 1989 there were sixteen Bond movies (eighteen if you count Casino Royale '67 and Never Say Never Again) and since 1990 they've only made nine. And now that Eon's legal issues are behind them, there's no reason we shouldn't get at least five more Bond movies in the 2020s. I'm not counting No Time To Die because that movie was supposed to have come out in late 2019 but was delayed because of behind the scenes issues and then obviously corona hit so it got delayed over a year.

Some thoughts on the shift from Connery to Moore in the Live and Let Die material. Bond is almost always about pistols, so it's odd and jarring -- though fun -- to go with a machine gun motif. The advantage of a machine gun, of course, is that it leaves several holes at once. I think these holes, in their way, announce "We're beyond Connery now, and we're pretty much forgetting Lazenby -- this is a franchise in its own right, and we can expect a multiplicity of Bonds." We thus abandon the gun barrel and let the holes become our new frames. Next, I think they get maximum mileage simply out of Moore's name. Else I've seen the "007" neatly inserted into the name "MOORE," but here they stack the "ROGER" over the "MOORE" and are able to fashion a vertical "007" that way. Finally, they really lean into the obvious pun of his name, with promises like "MOORE excitement," which they return to for "Moonraker." Simple, but appreciated.

EON left themselves open to a false advertising lawsuit with that Moonraker trailer. “Other films may promise you The Moon, but we deliver!”
Apparently it appearing in the background of a few of the space scenes counts as “delivering the Moon”. The way they talk about it, it makes it sound as if Bond will actually go to the Moon in Moonraker. In retrospect, considering the name, it’s interesting they chose to have Drax’s base be a satellite in orbit as opposed to a Moon-base (complete with a literal moon raker to keep it tidy).

I think Live and Let Die started that trend: where the set-up for the spectacle is "whoa, oh no, how will this play out" and the pay-off is "omg, did that actually happen - that's amazing." But the "whoa, oh no" is good enough for the trailer and they can entice you to go see the movie for the payoff. For the earlier films (ahem, Connery-era), they have to give you the pay-off to sell the movie. I don't rank Moore as high as you in general (but let's not split hairs, I effing love him), but I think during this time period the series did evolve a bit in terms of how to thrill audiences with impossible situations that require spectacular solutions. With that you CAN hold back with what you give away and just show us the impossible-to-get-out-of situation without showing us how it plays out. I think LALD (like hello, the crocodile scene!) started that. And yeah, that's why the trailers get better, because they're working with better material in terms of spectacle at this point.

I had to come back the next day to see it all over again.

Agreed, it's kind of funny how much the fact that Diamonds Are Forever was scheduled to come out in December, 1971 really went into that movie's advertising. I wasn't aware of any of that until Calvin did that Bond Christmas video. In just about every Bond movie to debut in December there was a Christmas theme in the commercials. Yet only OHMSS and The World Is Not Enough (maybe not a coincidence) were set at Christmas time.

That's definitely something that they could bring back. "Hi I'm Daniel Craig but you may know me better as Bond. James Bond. My mission: to stop a dastardly villain for her majesty. My weapon: a Walther PPK 9mm. My fate: to find out, see me in No Time To Die, only in theaters this autumn." That'd be hilarious haha.

    9. Golden Gun Teaser

This is the era I actually grew up in, and I remember it well. I remember sitting in the theater, watching four trailers before every movie movie started. The first Bond movie I ever saw theatrically was For Your Eyes Only, I was 13 at time. Marvel did a tie in comic book two-parter, and I still have those. Those became a graphic novel, sitting in my bond collection as we speak. All were part of the wider marketing campaign. I absolutely LOVE that film, and at that time the trailer blew my mind. I said that to say this - I love that you are doing these, but I think you might be doing them a bit short by not also taking into account how well they compare to the other action movie trailers that came out in the same year. Marketing a film is one thing, competing for those moviegoer bucks is a huge part of why they end up looking like they do. Its nice to have another context to put them in as well, might even change how you feel about some of them lol. Great vid mate, easy like!
