"The next Bond film"? It's interesting how many people think the series is coming back. If it does, the next movie will be made by someone other than EON productions. And that's one big "if."

@@LeonWick526 It'll be back eventually. Bond movies have lost money before, and they've taken long hiatuses before, so it'll be picked back up at some point. It's also a big thing in british culture, so there will be a lot of people willing to make it happen.

Refreshing to see the honesty of having Moonraker as your #2. Too many people give into pressure from "critics" and "experts" to the point where everyone's movie lists become inauthentic but sometimes you just like something and you shouldn't have to defend or justify why. Moonraker is the flagship film of this channel and I think this list now accurately represents Calvin in all his glory

Honestly. Critically his films are some of the most maligned but I think those of us who grew up in the early 2000’s know that Goldeneye and TWINE are god-tier Bond films. Another thing that Pierce has going for him is that he is the Bond who is the face of Bond video games. Goldeneye 64, Nightfire, Everything or Nothing. Bond’s really an interesting case because most franchises get up to a few films and then just kind of die and get rebooted about twenty or thirty years later, with Bond they’ve been consistently going for over 60 years. Far from just being a franchise now, it’s a part of history and a way of seeing how different generations tackled the same basic character and story.

About 10 years ago or so, I did a marathon of all Bond films up to that point (including the 2 non-Eon ones), 25 movies straight. It took me a little over 3 days to do, taking as few breaks as possible. Just to see if I could do it. I honestly believe that was the most painful thing I have ever done, and I am a combat vet with multiple tours and a 25-year heavy construction worker. I think I cried when it was over, not because I was sad that it ended, but happy that it did. Furthermore, I said that, I think I did because I don't really remember. I was so delirious by the end.

The list is put together with so much knowledge and love for the series that I just want to say thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I particularly appreciate the way we're shown how opinions can change over time. That's certainly true for me too, and I'm now revising my own personal Bond ranking list. Brilliant post. I personally disagree with his love for the Pierce Brosnan movies (not saying they are worse as films than what I like) but we all have our different styles of movies that we love, he feels lots of nostalgia to the Brosnan era while I feel most nostalgia towards the Connery, 1960s style of Bond movies, it feels like being child again when I think about them. There are so many different styles of Bond that I feel everyone can find something they like and why it probably is so varied what people like and Bond definitely is lots of nostalgia for lots of people.

When I did my ranking, No Time to Die came out 12. I've since softened a bit on that, but I do agree it's a hard one to rank. I do think it's one of the better Bond swan songs, and it’s got an awful lot to love, but I can totally understand the ending of the film souring the meal. But for me, two thirds of an almost three hour film being a lot of fun is hard to dismiss. That’s a remarkable feat.
As for top 5, I'm glad you’ve leaned into your own tastes and let your adoration of Moonraker shine. SPECTRE was for me by far the biggest missed opportunity, because there is so much potential in putting to screen the actual rise of the canonical organization. I have often thought about how I would rewrite that film, and I have never even come close to trying, but in my mind I always gravitated towards some sort of classical spy thriller, focused more on the craft and the challenges that come with building out an organization like that, and less on direct action. I don't know, there are huge challenges in the whole concept of putting a focus directly on SPECTRE, probably the best answer is that this movie should never have been made :p

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Рік тому +2

'Never should have been made' is going too far for me as pretty much what Quantum teased in revealing the organization behind Mr White -that question had to be answered as Skyfall had ignored it. James Bond & Friends podcast recently went though the various drafts of the script and it's clear the troubled shoot impacted the film [for example, the original ending was leaked as part of the Sony hack so needed to be changed but the new version still had to finish on London Bridge as that set had already been built; originally Madeline was going to fight Blofeld's female heavy-a new version of Irma Bunt-in the climax but that character was deleted from the script, hence why she just wanders around London before being kidnapped]. I do think, like the Craig saga overall, Spectre works better when watched as part 4 of his 5 part saga rather than on it's own [and it's Craig giving his version of the the 'classic cinematic' Bond in his performance].

honestly, the worst thing the film did was to tie itself to the rotting corpse that was the last film. that immediately put it at a severe disadvantage. but there were other problems:
      1) casting a black woman as "007". i know how that sounds, but my gripe with it is that i think it was done just to fulfill some diversity quota, to satisfy the wokies. it doesn't play an important part in the story. if she'd been 008 instead, i'd have no problem. but doing this just to do it seems phony and inauthentic.
      2) i didn't buy the romance with madeline in spectre and i don't buy it here. there's very little about the way they interact that suggests she should be this important to him. with vesper it was believable. with madeline, it isn't.
      3) bond dies. i feel this is something you should only do if you're dead certain this will be the last film in the series.
also, the villain was rather lackluster and it had the gloomy feel that all the craig films do. he should have quit after skyfall because the series has not had an original thought since.
to me, this ranks below every film but spectre. i'd even put thunderball's 1983 bastard child ahead of it. at least that had fatima and mr. bean in it.

However, there character arc is them gaining respect for Bond who's shown he's still a valuable agent coming out of retirement, hence why by the time of the third act, they've gained respect for him-handing the 007 number back to him, fighting by his side while Bond shows he respects them as he trust them to look after his family and help them escape.

Was really surprised by Moonraker 2nd ranking but pleased to see it. First one I saw at the cinema as a teenager and I was exhausted afterwards ... It has to be one of the best value for money films for Bond fans. You can see the money being spent up there on the screen like an expensive gift to the fan base.

TWINE always ranked near the top of my list. People who act like the movie is completely sunk because of Denise Richards are ridiculous. In recent years I think Goldeneye has overtaken it, because I feel it fizzles out a bit near the end, but it's still near the top for me.
Also, your #2 pick didn't surprise me knowing what you like in your Bond films, and it was also the first non-theatrical Bond film I ever saw, and finally, in my own recent personal rankings I've determined I agree with your #1.

What fun! I love how you put this together, especially the visual gags. Production aside, there is still enough high-level content to ensure your usual quality endeavour. Interesting to see how some movies moved in your overall ranking. It's probably been as many years since I've attempted a Bond ranking so maybe over Winter, I'll sit down, crank up the popcorn and rewatch the series. As you say, it might be a few years before something new comes on our screens.
    Great job, Calvin!

00:00 🎬 *Calvin is ranking all James Bond films based on personal taste, acknowledging diverse preferences in the Bond fandom.*

03:52 🃏 *"Casino Royale" (1967) is a Bond comedy spoof, not a recommended introduction to James Bond, appreciated more by Bond obsessives.*
06:12 🔍 *"Quantum of Solace" faces criticism for bothersome directing, editing choices, and a lack of enjoyment despite positive re-evaluation in the Bond fandom.*
08:19 🔍 *"Spectre" ranks low due to overcorrections from the previous film, a weak plot twist, and action sequences that don't excite.*
09:13 🌊 *"Thunderball" is visually appealing but criticized for a dragging story, uninteresting villain plot, and aggressive editing.*
10:52 😅 *"The Man with the Golden Gun" slips lower on the list due to a feeling of tiredness, awkward Bond portrayal, and sluggishness.*
11:35 🔫 *"The Living Daylights" is considered a training wheels outing, with enjoyable moments but a plot that feels confusing and forgettable.*

18:53 🎬 *"No Time to Die" had solid intentions, but execution was majorly fumbled. Film includes quirky elements like Blofeld's eye on a pillow and Ana de Armas kicking ass.*
19:33 🤣 *"Diamonds Are Forever" is a campy Bond film, more of a comedy than a spy thriller. Charles Gray's performance and witty script contribute to its unique charm.*
22:59 🔄 *"Die Another Day" was initially loved but faced criticism later. Despite its flaws, the film has fun moments, and Pierce Brosnan's performance is appreciated.*
25:30 🌀 *"A View to a Kill" is considered the craziest Bond film. Features an odd mix of old and new elements with Roger Moore's charm, Christopher Walken, and Grace Jones as iconic villains.*

31:37 🎶 *"Live and Let Die" stands out with its supernatural elements and memorable villains. Roger Moore's confident performance, unique soundtrack, and humor make it a fondly remembered Bond film.*
33:31 🔫 *"Licence to Kill" has evolved from being disliked to appreciated. Timothy Dalton's gritty portrayal, a darker tone, and a compelling villain contribute to its growth in popularity.*
34:57 🚗 *"Tomorrow Never Dies" is a fast-paced, action-packed Bond film with a straightforward narrative. Despite behind-the-scenes turmoil, it delivers impressive action sequences and a memorable Bond girl.*
36:36 🐙 *"Octopussy" is a meat-and-potatoes Bond adventure, confidently delivering action and 80s flair. Known for its plane and train sequences, it remains a delight to watch with wish-fulfillment appeal.*
37:31 🤡 *Octopussy is praised for its train-based action, expertly handled tone, and standout scenes, including Bond diffusing a nuclear bomb dressed as a clown.*
39:11 🏔️ *On Her Majesty's Secret Service is reappraised as one of the very best Bond films, with unique direction, rich visuals, and standout performances, especially by Diana Rigg.*
40:49 ♠️ *Casino Royale, despite initial reservations, is now loved for its stripped-back Bond, rich details, and the exceptional chemistry between Daniel Craig and Eva Green.*
42:55 🎬 *Goldfinger, initially considered overrated, is praised for its iconic imagery, engaging scenes, witty moments, and Sean Connery's phenomenal presence.*
45:55 💼 *The World Is Not Enough is cherished for its subversion of the classic formula, high-stakes plot, varied and kinetic action sequences, and the dynamic villain Elektra King.*
47:32 🕵️ *The Spy Who Loved Me is commended for teaming up 007 with a Russian agent, featuring favorite locations, and offering a perfect blend of tension, excitement, and iconic moments.*
49:52 🍂 *Skyfall, a modern classic, stands out for Daniel Craig's performance, exploration of Bond's past, and a plot centered around M, making it a film that transcends the Bond series.*

55:27 🔫 *GoldenEye regains the top spot, praised for its perfect concoction of Bond elements, iconic villains, conflict with a former colleague (006), and the captivating Bond girl Natalia.*
56:21 ☕ *GoldenEye is praised for introducing a phenomenal Bond (Pierce Brosnan) with iconic moments, a highly caffeinated energy, and a vibrant kinetic pace credited to director Martin Campbell.*
57:02 🏛️ *GoldenEye is considered a Marvel of a film, deserving of a modern classic status, and crucial for setting up the Bond series in a new era of real-world politics.*
57:28 🕹️ *The popularity of the GoldenEye video game has contributed to the film's lasting legacy, making it a name even non-Bond fans recognize. Pierce Brosnan's debut is celebrated as a special and favorite Bond film.*

I was relieved to hear your more balanced take on NTTD. At one point, I feared you putting it at the bottom. Wish it had been a bit higher, but given how much you loath the ending, this isn’t too bad. But the highlight for this video has to be the creeping realisation, as we near the top three, that Moonraker is yet to come. I just watched, smiling, thinking, “He’s doing it, he’s actually going to put it above TSWLM, in the Top 3.… Wait! It’s above Skyfall?!” What a fun video, thanks again Calvin! And, for what it is worth:
    1. Casino Royale
    2. Goldeneye
    3. From Russia With Love
    4. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    5. No Time To Die

I would like to see Calvin do another 'watch all the Craig films in a row' as the ending works a lot better when you've seen that Bond's journey through the films. I do wonder if people will warm to it when [eventually!] more Bond's come out and people see the Craig era as it's own entity [bit like how OHMSS downer ending wasn't really appreciated until later].

    • @KalEl290
      @KalEl290 Рік тому +1

@@jamesatkinsonja Agree with this. I don’t have a problem with the ending as it is. Obviously it’s sad, but I don’t feel that makes it bad. But I think you’re right - when NTTD is no longer the new film that we’re left with, waiting for the next one, I’m sure a lot of people will find the ending less confronting because they’ll see the series is fine, continuing on as it always has.

Quantum is the one I do find defending more, especially as it went though a hellish production so the end product is a 'damage limitation' exercise, but it does have it's moments and some of the plot threads in Skyfall [M+Bond's relationship, M's decision making being under pressure] are actually set up in that film.

Goldeneye was my first Bond film and I'm so glad I never saw the trailers for it before the film or know anything about it. The name Bond seemed vaguely familiar, but I didn't even know the previous films existed. I was at a hotel party and we rented it late one night. I was enthralled by every moment of it and is still my favorite of them all.

Like I said some time ago, I am more of a casual Bond enjoyer (years can pass without me watching a Bond film) but I enjoy your content on Bond very much. It was fun watching the video to see whether Goldeneye had taken the top spot this time. I personally never do rankings of anything, but Goldeneye is certainly one of those Bond movies that are undoubtedly deserving.
Nostalgia is strongest for me with the Connery movies. I primarily watched those during childhood. I dont think of him as Bond because he had other great movies, but if I think of Bond, he comes most often to mind.
I liked watching Roger Moore but nowadays I have a bit of a hard time watching his movies except one (okay, maybe 2): The Man with the Golden Gun. Shocking, I know. It's nostalgia what can I say. I recently watched Moonraker and Octopussy for the first time and I just couldn't quite get into them.
I also recently rewatched OHMSS after 20+ years. I didn't particularly like it then ("that's not Sean Connery"), but was very pleasantly surprised this time. I really liked Telly Savalas as Blofeld.
Keep your enthusiasm for the series (not that I fear that you would lose it anytime soon) and me and others will keep watching. The fun that you are doing these videos makes it quite hard to disagree with your choices, for me at least, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Love seeing other people's Bond rankings! and I thought this video was fantastic. For my top 5 Bond films:
    .Goldeneye
    .The Spy Who Loved Me
    .On Her Majesties Secret Service
    .Casino Royale
    .No Time To Die
*Controversial to have "No Time To Die" on the list but I just really adore the more grander feeling adventure to the film, almost feeling like a Roger Moore romp, and I love the absolute rollercoaster it takes you on. Probably Craig's most goofiest film of his run as bond but I always find myself getting wrapped up in it. As soon as "Blowfeld's camera eye" is introduced I was hooked!! I understood what kind of film this was going to be
