Hooked one in 2019 at the pier on St George Island. Thought I was hung up on the bottom then all of a sudden I was able to move it. Didn’t know what it was until it came to the surface. Ended up breaking my pole and eventually it snapped the line against the concrete of the pier. Something I will never forget!

4 years ago 2 of my uncles and I went on a deep sea fishing trip off the coast of Cocoa Beach in Florida, we started off catching bait fish, and then went out for shark fishing. we caught a couple black tip's. The biggest black tip we caught on that trip was about 75 lbs, but that wasn't the craziest thing about the fishing trip. one of the lines started to go, i took over for about 15 min but it was just too much. i would've been 13 or 14 at the time, i gave the rod to my uncle and he was fighting this fish for over an hour. once we got the fish closer to the boat our captain freaked out once he saw what it was. out of nowhere we see this long saw like blade come out of the water and start swinging around and hitting the boat. it was our first time shark fishing or even sea fishing. We were all shitting bricks and just jaws to the floor when we saw this fish. Our captain told us this was the first time he or anybody he knew has seen a saw fish in the area we were at. That was hands down the greatest fishing experience of my life and will never be forgotten.

Think of this, there is 3,5 trillion fish in the water, and there is max 5000 sawfish and min 200 AND HE CAUGHT A ENORMOUS SAWFISH, with out exaggerating that sawfish could be the biggest in the whole WORLD and out of 3,5 trillion fish they caught just that one.

I only saw the baseball bat sized bill in the splash on the short corner, got the other 5 lines cleared and got the pole in the chair gimbal with only a few seconds left while the boat backed down on it before it reached the end of the line and broke.

***TRUE FISHING STORY - LONG READ***
I know your pain. At least you got to see what it was though. I was fishing in the Delaware River near Phillipsburg, New Jersey about 8 years ago in July. My buddies and I had baught the 6 biggest live trout for bait that the bait shop we went to had. The smallest was 8 inches and the largest was about 12 inches. We were on the hunt for big stripers but knew there was also the possibility of catching a muskie or a big flathead catfish. After about 4 hours of fishing, we had landed 2 stripers over 20 lbs, my buddy's being closer to 25lbs. It was starting to get really dark and the biggest trout had gone belly-up in the live well, so rather than fish it under a balloon like we had been doing with the others, I tied up a heavy duty bottom rig. 218lb class Big game 3-way swivel, 5 oz pyramid sinker tied to one end of the swivel with 30lb monofilament, and a 9/0 octopus circle hook tied to the other end of the swivel with a 3 foot 80lb monofilament leader. I had a Rippin Lips 8 foot heavy action catfish spinning rod with an Okuma Avenger 6500 series baitrunner spooled up with 65 lb power pro braid. Now that you know what my tackle situation was, just imagine this. Like I said, it was starting to get really dark, almost pitch black except for what our headlamps were shining on, so I wanted to try this one last thing. I cast my bait right on the edge of the channel. My plan was to have it in the water for as long as it took us to clean up our surrounding area and pack up. I set my bait runner after the bait hit bottom and I got rid of the slack in the line. Not more than 5 mins after doing so, my drag starts a slow creep. I figured something had drifted into my line, so I picked up my rod, prepared to reel it in and call it a night. I felt a slow pull, but nothing I would relate to being a fish. So I started to reel in and no sooner than I felt resistance did this animal take off and start peeling drag off of my reel. By this point we couldn't see anything unless we were shining our headlamps directly at it. Slow pulls were followed by powerful tugs and eventually attempts to strip my reel of its line. As I was fighting this fish, we heard loud splashes out in the river that I would associate with people playing in a pool. For every foot of line I gained, this fish would end up taking two. Fast forward and I've been fighting the fish for nearly an hour now, mind you we were fishing from shore. All of a sudden we hear a boat coming up the river along the bank we were fishing from. My friends shouted to stay away while flashing their lights but I guess the boat operator, who ended up being a fisherman himself, misunderstood and thought we needed help. As he came closer up river to us and the bank we were fishing from, my fish made one last lightning run out in front of and past his boat and proceed to turn and run down river. At this point, I was terrifed of my line going under the boat and getting cut by the prop, so I tried to high stick my rod in an attempt for my line to go over the boat. Unfortunately, this was when I found out the guy was a fisherman, I didn't notice his fishing rods standing straight up until my line hit them. The first pole snapped after being smacked into a rail and the much larger second pole snagged the line, pulling it down to the stern where it was ultimately cut by a sharp edge somewhere. I felt bad for two reasons. The loss of a monster fish I didn't even get to see, and for one of this man's rods being broken when he was attempting to help us. I asked him if he wanted a replacement for the rod and he laughed and said "Nah! It was an old beater anyway. You look like you could use a drink though." And I definitely needed one. He threw me a can of PBR without even asking how old I was. (I was only 18 😆) I'll never forget that fish as long as I live. Never faught anything like it before and I'm not sure I ever will again. I just wish I could have seen what it was.

Sawfish were common in the Halifax River in the early 1900's. My grandfather was the bridge tender on what is now the Granada Ave. Bridge in Ormond Beach. Before the causeways were built out to make building the bridges on this stretch of the Intracoastal cheaper (longer dirt causeway=shorter bridge = less $$) the river flowed freely and the bottom had healthy sea grass everywhere with hard shale bottom. He saw Sawfish everyday cruising in the shallows. What an awesome catch. I've seen three caught in my 60 years. One in the Tomoka Basin north of Ormond and two inside Ponce Inlet.

This reminds me of a few fish I've hooked into but with the wrong gear. Hooked into a halibut while fishing for salmon. Last thing I saw was an ENORMOUS tail fin on a last second run and that was all she wrote.
Another time was fishing for Chinook. I hooked into a huge one. I couldn't lift the rod up when the fish was fighting me. Ended up wrapping around the downrigger and prop and then snapping off.

So in SA we do alot of shore fishing for monster sharks, and straight sticking it like that is a method to recover strategy during a long battle, esp when the fish goes on a big run. No point ruining your back if the fight might last 5 hours.

Bro...I feel your pain. NO BS here...my recurring nightmare is from 18 years ago. Guitar Fish are small...3' or so...what I caught on an 9/0 Electric, 100 main Momoi, 150 10' leader, 12/0 circle with a small 5 lb Bonita for bait in 190' foot of water and a double crimped 14/0 hook was insane.
At 1:00am on a full July Moon scared me for life. I consider myself highly skilled and pretty knowledgeable angler...this beast ran from a depth of a 180' to the surface like a rocket ship in roughly 2 minutes and was heading SSW....dragged our little 23' Ranger 230c Offshore for 5 miles and spooled the reel down to 10% at 75% drag before surfacing and under the spreader bar lights on....we were like no F'n way. 20 to 23' feet long with a tail the size of a telephone pole, black black, white belly. Wingspan looked to be 16 to 18' on the first pair of wings, the second pair were 6 to 8 feet across. After a few attempts to lay it down the side of the gunnel for pics...it said...goodbye..and slowly disappeared into the night.
Have any idea what it was? Largest Guitar I could find in books was 48" long....not 22 feet.
