  • JOHN LENNON. IMAGINE. THE ULTIMATE MIXES. The ultimate Deep Listening Experience for the Imagine album: 135 tracks completely remixed from the original multitracks in Stereo and 5.1. Out now at bit.ly/IMAGINE50
New & exclusive 2018 Raw Studio Mix video including some never-before-seen footage, recorded at Ascot Sound Studios, Tittenhurst Park, 26 May 1971.
    HOW DO YOU SLEEP?
So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise
You better see right through that mother’s eyes
Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head
Tell me... How do you sleep?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
You live with straights who tell you you was king
Jump when your Momma tell you anything
The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you’ve gone you’re just another day
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me babe... How do you sleep at night?
    You was king...
Whoah... How do you sleep at night?
Whoah... How do you sleep at night?
A pretty face may last a year or two
But pretty soon they’ll see what you can do
The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years
Oh... How do you sleep, brother?
Ohh... Tell me how do you sleep at night?
    Hit it!
Jump when your momma tell you anything
But pretty soon you’ll see what you can do
Ohh... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
The IMAGINE Raw Studio Mixes place you in the centre of Ascot Sound Studios with John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band all around you. No reverb or echo, no effects, no strings, just live, unvarnished and raw. Available in stereo and exclusively in 5.1 Surround Sound in The Ultimate Collection Box Set.
Imagine you are at the Lennon’s home, Tittenhurst Park in Ascot, England. It's night. It's the last week in May in 1971 and you are their special guest, sat in a chair in the very center of the their recording studio, Ascot Sound Studios. John Lennon is sat in front of you, teaching the musicians one of his latest compositions. He is talking and singing and playing the same wood-finish Epiphone Casino electric guitar he played on 'Revolution'. A bearded George Harrison is in front of you, to the right, playing electric slide on John's pale blue Fender Strat. Just behind you and to your right, Rod Lynton with Ted Turner from Wishbone Ash are strumming chords on twelve string acoustic guitars, and directly behind you to the right, John and George's old friend Klaus Voormann is playing his deep hand-painted Fender Precision bass. Behind you to the left, Alan White (who would later join Yes) is playing his Ludwig silver sparkle drumkit, and in front of you to the left, John Tout from Renaissance is playing chords on the Steinway upright piano, and to his right, Nicky Hopkins is improvising on the red-top Wurlitzer Electric Piano, literally days before he leaves for Nellcôte to play on Exile on Main Street with The Rolling Stones. You are listening to the band playing 'How Do You Sleep' and all the hairs are standing up on your arms.

About ‘How Do You Sleep?’ by John & Yoko
excerpted from the 120 page book in the Imagine Ultimate Collection Box Set
John: Somebody said the other day ‘It’s about me’. You know, there’s two things I regret. One is that there was so much talk about Paul on it, they missed the song. It was a good track. And I should’ve kept me mouth shut - not on the song, it could’ve been about anybody, you know? And when you look at them back, Dylan said it about his stuff, you know, most of it’s about him. The only thing that matters is how he and I feel about those things and not what the writer or the commentator thinks about it, you know? Him and me are OK. So I don’t care what they say about that, you know? I’ve always been a little, you know, loose. And I hope it’ll change because I’m fed up of waking up in the papers. But if it doesn’t, my friends are my friends whatever way.

The only thing added to "Come Together" for the production was George Harrison's guitar playing. Check out The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus live videos

Indeed, it’s been confirmed by several sources close to the band that John didn’t let anyone say a bad word about Paul. Only he could do it. I recently watched the Imagine documentary, and found one scene particularly amusing. I don’t remember exactly how it went. John was mentioning something about Paul’s records, Phil Spector went: “But who wants to make Paul’s records?” and John, obviously annoyed at the comment, said something like: “But you know what I mean, it was just an example!”. Considering this song, he could’ve joined the trashing, but instead found himself annoyed and chose to cut the conversation off. Very telling.

    • @Nerkin610
      @Nerkin610 3 роки тому +347

He always loved Paul’s music, by the way. He talked a lot of shit, but his closest ones have revealed that he had people get all the records for him. He would listen to them with Yoko and either cry or smile through comments like: “There you are!”. He interpreted several loving songs as direct messages to himself. His diaries also show that he nearly obsessed over Paul throughout his life. They loved each other deeply but let their pride get in the way. None of them dared admitting the love explicitly to each other’s faces, and they were both too hurt to give in completely.

John was very protective of the Beatles as a whole and would defend them when other people would try to diss them..he said in an interview that he felt like a parent and would fiercely defend the Beatles especially when someone like Mick Jagger made some comments about the Beatles..John said I can knock the Beatles but not Mick Jagger..I think with Paul, they felt like brothers and brothers fight sometimes but Linda said one time that there’s a love between those two that no one will ever know how deep it runs..except those two.

@@Nerkin610 John and Paul were mates since high school - and co-wrote since then. Take a look at the Sing-along segment with James Cordon and Paul McCartney - they go to Paul's childhood home - and Paul shows the piano where they'd sit and write - it's very revealing. These guys we're in each others deepest thoughts - to write songs together. So, John knew what Paul was capable of doing - but was frustrated when Paul would not do what he was capable of doing. Many of Paul's songs - including Beatles and after Beatles, are really combination of multiple songs - Paul just writes portions of songs and slams them together. Listen to any early PM solo songs "Jet", etc - they're just different partial songs put together.

There was no one quite like him. It's difficult to "classify" this musician. He came from VERY humble roots, so it's no surprise that he uses restraint when he plays, which makes his music that much more enjoyable. I always thought of him as the "cherry on sundae." Just made it all complete and all worth the enjoyment.

Well to me, I've always looked it as their two different songwriting techniques, John was straight to the point and Paul would include metaphors and be subtle. Like obviously not for all the songs they've written but like that's what I've noticed from most of their catalogue. Imo Paul's way is better, it makes his songs more relatable, it can give the lyrics he's saying different meanings to the listener, making it easier for it to have secret meanings. Like I say thats just my opinion but yeah I would say Paul's subtle references are way better than John's straight to the point, you want to show the listener what you're feeling, not tell them, this is exactly what Paul did. Even John regretted being straight to the point in this song saying that he shouldn't of used it as a song all about Paul because it the would make a really good song without all the references

One of my favorite Lennon voices is the chorus to "This Boy". From hushed harmony to full "overdrive" as suggested below. He imbued what are just pop lyrics with "deep conviction". His voice pulled any pop song along convincingly with signature Lennon emotion whether it's vague irony in "Norwegian Wood", or belting sexuality in "Twist and Shout".

This is such a heavy, funky, down low gut punch of a song. I can’t believe this was on the Album Imagine. It really goes to show Johns incredible ability as a song writer, and a band leader. The way he nods at people to cue, or just glances at them, all while maintaining his signature loose, float through the center rhythm playing is just fucking astounding. That is not something you can teach. It’s something you’ve got to learn, practice, and build.
Also George playing slide like it’s 1927 again is just so damned good.

I think George and Ringo and perhaps Paul were on somewhat good terms by then. George was pretty much the monkey in the middle during this period.

I kinda agree but The album version had that sick wall of sound aesthetic, and John's semi subtle snake hiss after "how do you sleep at *night* ". Still, this is the far superior version in practically every other aspect.
