  • How does the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's 200 megapixel camera stack up against a 100 megapixel medium format camera? In this video we compare the image quality produced by these cameras and find out just how good the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra can be compared to a professional camera. We compare some side by side images in Lightroom and I give my thoughts on how these two cameras perform.

Just the fact that a phone is being compared to a $6000 camera, and not doing to bad, is outstanding. A phone could never replace professional equipment. Put for the average person to point and shoot, or just start out in photography, it is amazing.

never say never. These phones are getting scary close. Meanwhile AI is making incredible strides in producing professional quality photos from scratch, so it’s only a matter of time before the ability to exactly mimick the quality of a GFX100s is ported to your smartphone. I give it 5 years as the rate of AI growth is exponential.

    - $6000 medium format camera vs 1.13" camera module inside a $1200 smartphone
    - 102Mpx with 3.1 micron pixels vs 200Mpx with 0.6 micron pixels
    - large, professionally polished and multiple coated glass lens elements vs small plastic lens elements
In conclusion, the S23U is doing a tremendous job despite having a way smaller sensor and also weaker optical performance due to the in-built plastic lens elements. Just imagine how good their 200Mpx sensor could perform if it had proper glass elements in front of it! Also, I wonder what the comparison would've looked like if ZJ used GCam instead as the stock camera app tends to overprocess images into oblivion.

The camera phone has been tuned to the camera phone clientele which tends to prefer over-processed, high contrast subjects with little or no shadow detail. In other words, the photos have "pop" but for landscape photography, a more subtle approach works much better for me; it does not need to pop, it needs to be realistic.
This is also what distinguishes Canon (pop) from Nikon (accuracy); although either can be tuned to mimic the other.

S23 Ultra has insanely good photos if taken into account how small are its optics and sensor. I tested and downsized its 200MP pics to 24MP (for ordinary users it will be always enough) - fantastic results. • @juanaaronvilapichler2893
      @juanaaronvilapichler2893 Рік тому +2

@@baranzo73 Of course it has to do with quality, compare the 12 mpx of all current smartphones with a 200 mpx smartphone, the quality is much better and allows you to see more details, zoom in closer, etc., it's not just marketing, the 12 mpx of a smartphone cannot offer the same quality as 200 mpx on a smartphone, a ceiling has been reached, that's why the mpx are increasing. Now if you compare it with professional cameras with larger sensors of the same or less mpx, there is another story. Smartphones are reaching this far and every year they allow us to see more details, you can't ask for much, its size is very small compared to a professional camera. It is what it is right now.

@@juanaaronvilapichler2893 It's been proven time and time again that a bullcrap 200mp and a 12mp smartphone shot have the exact same level of detail.
I had a smartphone that was capable of 64mp shots and it loses to my current 12mp smartphone in terms of detail. Sure the processing and AIs make it smoother and essentially trick you with thinner processing capabilities but it's the same damn thing. Compare using RAWS if you want lmao.
Plus, we've not reached the end. Sony just revealed a stacked mobile CMOS sensor that reduces noise drastically, which helps a ton when trying to resolve detail. Not to mention the sensor size increasing. We can go beyond 1-inch despite what people might tell you, you just need clever engineering.
      Plus, the s23 ultra doesn't even have a 1-inch.
In short, yes it is all marketing and it offers you no more detail for triple the file size of your shots. Go ahead and create huge prints using s23 200mp shots and see if you'll appreciate seeing big blurry, smoothed-out areas vs seeing the pixels that aren't smooth on a 12mp shot lmao.

I find these images extraordinary and just think, imagine that the sensor on this Samsung was actually the same size as in the Fujifilm! What kind of detail and resolution and quality would we be talking about now? Just to wait a couple more years, mobile phones will eat everything and everyone in the photographic industry. The Fujifilm definitely captures significantly better detail, but the Samsung does a really impressive job achieving its goal - great looking pictures for everyday users. There is plenty of processing going on with the color, exposure, etc. to make the pictures look vibrant and lively for the user that isn't interest in doing any post-processing on their own. The problem is that the software of smartphones already modifies the photo (sharpening, denoising, boosting colors, straightening, etc.) that the photo is mush. There's almost nothing left to do. And some AI or other wonders of wreaths will artificially transform the photo. It has nothing to do with the photographed object. The image should look good on the smartphone screen. Print and you will see compression, lack of detail, sharpening, blurring and unnatural colors. If it were otherwise, no one would carry a full-size optics with a camera, just bought a smartphone and shot photos or videos, and a photo studio would be a selfie with a smartphone.

megapixels are not the only variable in the equations, even if the full frame or a 4/3rds sensor has less megapixels, the size of the pixels will be bigger and usually result in better quality when pixel peeping. Phone cameras have a lot of shortcomings like very small sensors and very poor lens optics so it will still lose against a lot of mediocre cameras with a mediocre lens combos when pixel peeping.
That being said though, 99.9% of people don't ever pixel peep images so a phone being able to even compete with a 6000$ camera is amazing considering the goals of a phone is making it as portable and painless to use as humanly possible

  • @mongini1

2 things what i wanna mention: the lens elements in the Fuji lens are several orders of magnitude larger. Which in turn means: Samsung has waaaaaay less room for errors in making the lens elements (have to be way WAY more precise) to even attempt feeding a 200MP image sensor. Oh and in case you didnt know: most smartphone cameras use plastic lenses instead of glass. High quality glass is way more translucent and pure than the very best plastic....)
Add that to the 2nd really big factor: Pixel density. The Samsung has a pixel size (according to the website of the ISOCELL HP2 Sensor) of 0.6 micrometers, while each pixel in the Fuji are 6.3 times larger at 3.8 micrometers. (i'd say the difference is even bigger, but lets keep rolling with what i was able to find) So the importance of the precission in lens manufacturing must be scaled by that factor.
how much larger are the lens elements in the Fuji? i'd say at least a factor of 10. so 10 times harder on the lenses and 6.3 times because of the small pixels...
Lets say samsung has a 60x harder time to feed every pixel with enough information. (and we are not even touching light gathering ability here, only theoretical resolving power)
Let this sink in, and then appreciate what Samsung is delivering here... i will keep shooting with my Fuji X-H2 for important stuff, and my trusty pixel for snapshots ^^

I wonder what's the average file size for both cameras here. Samsung is applying super strong jpg compression since the S20 series. You need to use 3rd party apps to be able to set jpg compression to 95 or 100% and though it only works with 12mpx pictures, there is a huge difference in quality.

I would be interested to see how the lower megapixel setting would look on the S23 ultra given that you can actually shoot in raw with it. I'd imagine the 200 megapixel setting has to do a ton of behind the scenes processing to come out with the quality it does. For a camera on a phone it seems very good considering I don't always want to carry my Canon around with me.

My favorite photography is old black & white film photography from pre-digital days, particularly street photography (mostly shot on Leicas loaded with Kodak Tri-X). If your priority is sheer resolution, _both_ these machines are a bazillion times better! But for sheer character and mood, each person has to judge photos according to their own tastes. The average person isn't that moved by razor sharpness. These days it's _much_ harder to find an interesting, aesthetically compelling photo than a super sharp one.

When you zoom in, it's almost the same coloring book. I also tried the 50 Mpx RAW Expert. When using RAW Expert, there is more detail, but always after 50-100% zoom, the photo is without detail. • @thomasmaughan4798

There's a problem with tiny pixels. Okay, a couple of problems. One is the wavelength of light; you start to get serious diffraction problems so you simply cannot keep slicing pixels. You CAN but you will never ever get a single point of light (a star, for instance) to focus on a single sensor pixel. My Nikon D850 can do that; but all predecessors could not. Most cameras simply cannot confine the image of a bright pixel to only that one pixel. They bleed all over the place. Physically larger pixels have less of this problem.
As others have suggested, if you down-sample the file, 1/4 size (1/2 dimension each way), this effectively removes the Bayer filter effect and most of the pixel-to-pixel bleed and reduces diffraction effects. That's the effective, usable megapixels.
The pro camera doesn't need this downsampling so the EFFECTIVE megapixels of a larger sensor are naturally much higher.

I know the S23 Ultra is just a phone and has a way smaller sensor size compared to the professional camera but this proves that smartphones don't need these high megapixel cameras. I think at 50MP we are close to the limit of what smartphones can handle with their sensor sizes, for now.
I believe if the phone's AI was to take more shots for the final picture, since it is mounted on a tripod, it would increase the image quality significantly.
Also there is some light distortion when zooming in deep into the S23 Ultra's pictures. This is probably because of the tiny lens the phone's camera has to see through compared to traditional camera lenses. So it's not just AI.

MEGAPIXEL is the print size if you dont know the logic behind them, you can zoom in and zoom in. a 12mp iphone will never zoom in like a 200mp Photo you can't even create a professional billboard with 12mp camera without heavy editing. with a 200 mp camera no edit needed straight to the post because the picture has so much details.

    • @JackMaslovCZLive
      @JackMaslovCZLive Рік тому

@@David-Zita In the poor sense of it, 200 MP is an incredible resolution. Unfortunately, in a phone those 200MP look like 64MP at best not only because of the small sensor but also because of the dense lens.
Try to remember when you were looking through someone's glasses, or a magnifying glass. The edges of that are little distorted or blurry. Well, that blurriness increases as you go smaller.
I also tried comparing 200MP with 50MP photos on my S23 Ultra and they are 90% the same.
Maybe with the first look it may seem the 200MP is slightly sharper but in reality, practically I cannot make out more detail compared to the 50MP, neither can I see a face more clearly.
Quite the opposite actually, when you zoom in too much it sometimes looks unnatural as the AI tries to make the picture look higher detail.

However, it is essential to consider the general consensus on this matter. Fujifilm's offering boasts significantly larger and superior optics, along with a larger sensor. While a 200-megapixel count may suggest superior image quality, this is not always the case. The image quality improvement is noticeable primarily when comparing cameras with identical setups, differing solely in megapixel count, up to a certain threshold. Beyond this threshold, factors such as sensor size and lens quality become dominant in determining image quality. In scenarios where the limiting factors are either the sensor size or the capabilities of the lens, the megapixel count becomes irrelevant, regardless of whether it is higher or not. However, when the megapixel count stands as the sole limiting factor, it can indeed make a substantial difference in image quality.

  • @MannyDeGuzmanJr

In broad daylight requiring small aperture lenses and fast shutter speeds you will not notice much different between phone shots and larger sensor camera shots. It will only matter if you're shooting fast moving subjects indoors in low light like indoor events and fashion shows. Larger image sensors captures more light and thus is cleaner and more usefull in low light, but again large sensor versus small sensor cameras does not matter much when shooting in broad daylight. Large aperture lens coupled with large image sensor is useful for portraits if you love bokeh or subject/ background separation, but if you're shooting landscape or group of people smaller aperture is much desirable than larger f stops because you want sharp and detailed image from corner to corner. Large Megapixel count is useful when cropping wideangle shots of smartphone without telezoom lenses, compared to lower megapixel camera with long telezooms.. In conclusion, both cameraphone and Pro camera has each uses we should not discount one another because we could use each disadvantages to benefit or complement one another. They have both pros and cons, they both have their uses. If you know how to use them purposely and properly you will never go wrong with any of them. It depends on your shooting skills and how well do you know your camera may it be a pro camera or a phone camera. Lastly, phone shots are meant to be shared directly to the web and on social media. Pro camera shots are meant to be post processed and printed on paper. But if photos are to be used equally for web purposes only, then it does not matter much if you're shooting with pro camera or phone, JPEG is your goto for online photos anyway because you cannot upload RAW format directly to social media sites.
