    A few people have mentioned that the Moka Pot doesn't qualify as 'espresso'. Yes, I agree that the coffee it makes is quite different to the other equipment mentioned....and it probably needs it's own episode one day, but we felt it it worth mentioning in this context as it is an incredibly cheap & easy way to get started with making an 'espresso-like' coffee, compared to the other (mostly) fairly expensive options listed. Thoughts?

    • @jonmichaellawrence5193
      @jonmichaellawrence5193 2 роки тому +2

      Obviously a moka pot isn't quite an espresso machine because it only creates about 1 bar of pressure but for a cheap alternative it makes quite great coffee. I actually use that plus a french press to make a cappuccino which obviously is quite different but still tastes great.

    • @Assenayo
      @Assenayo 2 роки тому +4

      Yeah Moka Pot is as much "Espresso" as an AeroPress. Don't get me wrong, Moka Pots and AeroPress both make great coffee but not espresso.
      However I get the point, most Australian coffee drinkers really mostly into the milk drinks, flat whites, lattes and caps and I would argue for those, Moka Pots and AeroPress do fantastic coffee for those if user right.
      That being said, I love my coffee black and I have my own bias which is levers.

    • @GenghisKhanPolitics
      @GenghisKhanPolitics 2 роки тому +1

      At most, Moka pots reach about 4 bars of pressure. That's no where near the traditional 9 required for espresso. Technically, it's still coffee and can taste fine. I've used one for years with pre ground coffee from Lavazza.

    • @Assenayo
      @Assenayo 2 роки тому

      @@GenghisKhanPolitics 9 bar is not the be all and end all, usually 6-10 is the range.
      In fact most light roasts are pulled at around 6 bar in speciality cafes as light roasts are not as good as building resistance compared to dark roasts.
      That being said moka pot is a very different brewing method to espresso, and that's not a bad thing. It produces great coffee if you use it well and produces terrible coffee if you use it badly which can be said for all methods especially espresso.

    You left out what I consider the most important category, semi-automatics priced between the "small home espresso machines" and "fully automatic machines". The Rancilio Silvia is a perfect example.

      Agreed. I think this was a major omission from the video. I also own a Silvia, and while it does not have a rotary pump, the brass boiler and non-pressurized baskets definitely put it in a different category to the entry level machines!

    As a barista, stuck at home during lockdowns, I finally got myself a machine for home this year. A little bambino, with a smart grinder. Absolutely love it. It's been really easy to teach my wife to use, and makes great coffee - and we're typically only making two coffees at a time.
    For me it hit the sweet spot of giving me coffee I'm happy with, but also being accessible to the non-baristas in my life who occasionally want to make themselves a coffee.

    One note about small home espresso machines: the dual wall is not the only choice. Most come with non-pressurized baskets as well, and as long as you’re willing to play with the grind setting and dial in you can pull some really fantastic, balanced shots.

    • @xcoreikkix

      i partially agree - but its needed to be said, that one biggest downsize of these machines = CONSISTENCY. You just cannot pull one great shot after another on Breville Barista Pro (even if i used it at home for more than 2 years), because grinder, because of temperature, because of pressure - its just fine but bit exhausting if you know what to do, but you just cannot do that every day in every condition.

    Back around the millieum i was looking for an esspresso machine. After reading volumes of comments the consenus of the higher end machine owners was that they wished they went directly to the high end machine and did not mess around with the cheaper machines. So i.bought a high end machine that i got 12 years of coffee bliss from before i had it refurbished. So yeah it was worth it. So consider my comment.

      The good thing now is that something like the Flair can pull amazing shots for a small investment (provided one is willing to go the manual route). I'd say the landscape of what's available has changed on the low and medium price range, and entry level prosumer grinders paired with consumer entry level semi-automatics can also pull stellar shots; the bar of entry into good espresso is lower than ever before.

    Around my place, Rancilio Silvia + Rocky grinder is very popular for home coffee starter kit. Cost for set is around $1200. Just make sure to get fresh roasted coffee (no more than 2 weeks old). I learn a trick from barista at local Rancilio distributor. He said to tilt the machine just a little bit to front. That way we get drier steam for frothing milk. Don't know if that is true but he was once champion at city wide barista challenge, and his cafe latte froth milk is exceptional smooth/silky.

    You left the best til last,it depends on what you can afford and how keen you are on your coffee, I’ve gone from nespresso pods had several Jura machines to ending up with a large profitec lever machine and a Eureka grinder with 75mm burrs , I think the grinder is the most important item, as the taste of my coffee on the previous Jura machine went down the pan eventually The difference now is huge and you can play around endlessly with preinfusion to get the right taste. I think the Bialetti moka pot is also great for making regular old fashioned great coffee and is very cheap to buy.

    Some super-automatics do not require much maintenance at all, you just run cleaning cycle before removing milk container and occasional descale (which all machines require). For Delonghi for instance you remove the brewing unit from the side door, and give it a rinse once a month. If you select appropriate beans and crank up dose and temp, they make very intense coffee, one can say espresso.

    I'm going to redo that list...
    1. Nespresso pod machine
    2. Cheaper bean to cup machines like the Gaggia Brera
    3. Semi Automatic machines like the Gaggia classic
    4. Better semi automatic like the Rocket Appartamento or the ECM Casa
    5. HX machines like the Rocket Giotto series or the Profitec 500 starting with vibe pumps and ending with rotary pumps. Spend more for a dual boiler, same features.
    6. Shot profiling dual boilers like a Dalla Corte or a Rocket R-Nine one
    7. Over the top machines like a Slayer, La Marzocco, Synesso
    This list is not necessarily tied to price, but quality and ease of getting that quality. I can pull a "God shot" on a Gaggia Classic, but that might only be on 2 shots out of 10. The E61 HX and dual boiler machines bring temperature stability and increase your chances of success. Dalla Corte has a system where once you set it up, it will run a pre determined pressure profile and adjust the attached grinder by itself. You can now achieve the "God shot" 9 out of 10 and get runs of 10 out of 10 times.
    If you ever have a pressure profiled shot, you will realize there is no substitute because you can extract different flavors depending on when and how much pressure you apply during the shot run time. You can also mimic lever machines and HX machines while profiling.
    All that being said, unless you are looking for a hobby.
    1. Nespresso.
    2. Gaggia Brera.
    3. Jura whatever you can afford.
    If you are looking for a hobby, don't get a cheap grinder. It will be like running a marathon in concrete shoes.

There's no little one-off shops. I do enjoy starbucks, but I also know it's definitely not the best out there. But that little shop by my hotel was an INSTANT game changer
    within 4 days of coming home, I ordered a counter top espresso machine. Nothing too fancy, around the $250 range, but good reviews and really good specs for the price from the research i did. I'm so excited to be able to expand m coffee game at home from just drip coffee (I like my ninja bar, but once again.. it's not the same)

    This is a fun video but once you get beyond Nespresso your grinders are absolutely key. It was a complete shock to me to find out that the grinder should probably cost around 50% or so of the purchase price of the espresso machine (of course some of us go a wee bit overboard). It sounds crazy but good grinders are the key to the whole process once you start using machines with proper portafilters.

  • @_ALTOE
    @_ALTOE 14 днів тому

    Half the upsides listed for the high end portafilter machines are also true for the cheaper entry level machines. Grinder, puck-prep, baskets, coffee beans and even the water you're using have much more of an impact on the result than the machine. Basket and portafilter can also be replaced on almost all domestic machines. Sure, higher end machines are better, that’s not up for discussion but cheaper machines with a good basket, grinder and coffee can give you a result shockingly similar to high end ones. The machines task is just to provide the desired temperature and pressure and not deviate from them shot to shot. Most domestic machines (Gaggia classic, Sage Barista Pro/Express, Sage Bambino, Rancilio Silvia, ...) can provide that.
    In that regard the video is a bit of a miss. High end machines are described as the end all be all in order to get great coffee at home but that’s simply not the case…

  • @yabaniiybn

    If the appropriate roasting rate and the appropriate mill thickness are selected, if the water passing rate can be adjusted (which can be done with pressure pods), excellent coffee can be made with very simple tools. You don't need thousands of dollars worth of appliances to drink good coffee. It just takes experience. Experience is gained by making lots of mistakes. At the last point I came to, I can reach a good result by choosing the appropriate mill ratio in a simple household appliance. The only difference is that I roast my own coffee, I use a stone pan for it. learn how to roast your own coffee and you will see that the rest is very easy.

    To me, if you call an nespresso or a pressurized portafilter "espresso" then you have to call the aeropress "espresso" as they all seem to produce a watery "fake crema" version of an espresso. It's not terrible, I do also enjoy them, but it's more like a strong coffee than a true espresso which has the oily feel to it.

    You can't exclude aeropress while including moka pots in the same category as machines like the Flair. Moka pots DO NOT MAKE ESPRESSO. They make what Italians simply call "caffe." Aeropress makes something closer to espresso than a moka pot, and including the Flair (and other lever machines), which make outstanding espresso, with moka pots is a bad decision.

    The waste produced by pods wouldn't be that bad if they were all made out of aluminum like pop cans. Given how recyclable aluminum is it's actually better for the environment than bio degradable plastic because it can be melted down into aluminum material to be reused. Most plastic can't be recycled or if they can then only very few times. With aluminum pods you could make new pods, pop cans or even products like airplane hulls.
    Really all Kurieg should have done was allow people to recycle their pods with their pop cans.

    Why no ESE pad machine??? I got a tiny, tiny Aroma Mia (for under €100!!!) which brews awesome espressi with a huge choice of coffee brands (mostly italian)! You can even tweak the brewing temperature by (not officially!) swapping the thermostat (93⁰C or 98⁰C I think) if you want to! The pads are quite affordable (around 30 cent/pad! Euro!) and biodegradable! Packaging is not so good - as every pad is seperatly packed! But you can recycle!

    Damn way to scare new ppl that are trying to get into the hobby by saying 7k espresso machine. I would adv ppl to start with a delonghi ec155 type and then if they like the hobby just jump into a dual boiled like a profitec or ecm its not 7k and is just as good.

    So let me get this straight. An aeropress which actually uses pressure doesn't make real espresso but you think a moka pot does? Nespresso uses 7 gm for a single shot. You compared it to a double shot Porter filter. I stopped watching at this point.

    Also- there are zero "thermoblocks" in a Breville Dual Boiler. Zero. It's a DUAL BOILER machine. Hence its name. This is a terrible video.

    Great video!
    I was pods user for years and because I love coffee I wanted something better (and more responsible to the environment) so I went with fully automatic which is best option in my opinion.
    Pros:
    1.) fast preparation (convenience)
    2.) consistent great quality
    3.) fresh coffee
    4.) multiple choices of drinks
    5.) easy to use (my wife)
    6.) easy to maintain
    7.) cheaper than pods
    8.) adjustable grinding and liquid dosing
    9.) design (they look awsome in modern family kitchen)
    Cons:
    For me, there are none for now. Cleaning is part of the deal, but if You own Jura machines, you'll have min amount of cleaning in comparison with other manufacturers which have removable brewing unit which You must clean with water now and than. We had other ones before, which were cheaper than Jura but noisier, inferior quality, more work to clean, so I strongly recommend Jura if You go fully auto!
    In video it was said that there is "obsessively amount of cleaning" which its not true (in Juras case). If you drink only espresso, the machine cleans it self. If You use milk based drinks, on the end of the day, You put cleaning capsules so machine drains liquid true milk system and again, its auto procedure, no sweat. For brew unit, machine gives You a warning when to make cleaning with tablet ( for us its around 2 months).
    So simple and easy.
    For our busy household we like full auto just because of convenience and quality but of course If You have time and space, high end manuals are best choice for quality but again, in my opinion the differences in quality are soo small now days when automatic machines are soo good that average user wont even notice.
    My humble "short" testimony. ;)

      @@Lukcv88 No question about that. My best friend has a Jura J8 and I have enjoyed his coffee many times. But at 5x the price of my Phillips 3200 and with the J8's larger footprint, the Phillips 3200 was an easy choice for me. Also, I rarely do milk drinks.
