      Hey Dawn!
This is Samantha, I'm on my Husbands account.
I NEED YOUR ADVICE REALLY BAD!!
We started the minimal process about 5 months ago while getting ready for a move to a larger apartment. We have gotten rid of about 70% of our stuff. Our home is fresh, clean, and I'm still getting rid of things!
HOWEVER HERE'S MY ISSUE! My Mother keeps sending things to our home as gifts like furniture, kids toys, kids furniture, sand box and messy sand outside.. Just so much stuff! We have talked to her probably FIVE TIMES over the past 5 months explaining that we are minimal and desire to live simply. She bought furniture for our OLD apartment, and when moving to the new apartment we no longer needed these items so we passed them on to other family members that are now using them and enjoying them (like my mother-in-law). MY MOM IS FURIOUS, yet she keeps sending stuff! We send it back to Amazon or end up feeling pressured to keep these things...
Can you please give me some advice? My mom is so precious, a Christian and genuinely sweet/thinking she is doing the right thing to show love... She just also is materialistic and when I grew up awesome toys, custom toy houses, and STUFF was her way of showing LOVE to me. We don't believe this is love at all but just a bandaid for not being there genuinely.
Hope this all makes sense and thanks in advance for helping!
      Samantha M.

Jesse Medina/ Samantha M...It sounds like your mother is subtly trying to derail your efforts. She ought to understand after 5 explanations and stop. Honestly it looks like a way to control. I can imagine my mother doing something like that just to cause me intense frustration, sabotage my efforts and paint me in an unflattering light to others for giving away her gifts. And my mother is a covert narcissist I have come to believe. Set boundaries and follow through. Wish you well.

How do you donate or get rid of items family members have passed down or given to you as gifts?? I've decluttered a bunch of my house. But there are a million more things I LOVE to get rid of but the guilt is killing me. Items like a hitch full of Knick knacks etc. My book shelves full of Knick knacks they have give us. I'm just over all of it. I want to breeze through when I'm cleaning. Plus it just looks so dang cluttered!! HELP thanks

I really love the COLORS! We just bought a home in Europe and I am planning to keep things minimalist as well - we have a few odd challenges (our 100+ year old home has NO CLOSETS, for example). 🏠 I think you have an amazing aesthetic going here.

We have a large house for the 2 of us, but I use the rule that I must be able to clean the whole house in about 3 hrs. So you can still have a a large house and be minimal

Not just that, but it would be AWESOME to feel you could more easily have people over. ❤ As a Christian, I feel that would open more doors for ministry because your house would be more ready to hold Bible studies, show hospitality, etc. Not that we shouldn't wait until our houses are perfect before we'll have people over.

I love your home. It's welcoming, cozy, neat and still has life even though it's not filled to the brim with things. I'm about a year and a half into my minimalism journey and about 50% of the way to where I'd like to be. I've just been cleaning one draw or closet or section of a room at a time and loading up the car and driving the stuff straight to the thrift store donation bin. It's been great to let go of things and feel a little lighter each week. And it only takes about fifteen minutes to clean the rooms that are complete. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • @kfore10

Just started the "de-clutter" phase today! I started with the room that brings me feelings of frustration when actually I love this room. The kitchen. I love to cook but all of the clutter just becomes overwhelming. Hubs was NOT thrilled at first but when I explained to him WHY I was doing this, he seemed to soften a little. I've never been more excited to thumble through tupperware and even MORE excited to toss half of it! :) Thank you for sharing your journey! We are first time parents to a now, 9 month old, and Minimialism is what we need in our lives!

I'm so glad the kids have books! Turning pages to read--especially for children reading books on their own or when parents or older sibs are reading to them--is one of the greatest, most memorable part of childhood. It sets children on a great path of learning and continued curiosity.

Such a sweet couple. I think the thing that makes your videos interesting is that you’re giving people the way that they can have that beautiful home you see in magazines. No clutter and easy to clean. Or maybe it’s just me and I’ve only realized that this is the way to have a home that’s beautiful. It’s the clutter. It’s always been the clutter and as a nation of commercialized folks we always are in the stage of wanting without moving the old stuff out.
And yes you do have a home that is magazine beautiful and it’s so far from weird. It’s simply wonderful.
    Thank you for your guidance!

I just found your channel and find it so refreshing ... hubby and I are nearing retirement and find that our "starter" home of almost 30 years that we moved into when our son was very young and is still just perfect for us. . . we want to spend all the time we can with our grandchildren and not be bogged down with all the upkeep of a larger home . .so glad we never left our little starter home. . my grandchildren tell us all the memories are here :)

I completely understand how you said that you've been there and it's unfulfilling. That's how I feel. I thought I wanted a nice big house, but I've realized I'm just way in over my head now, and I'm overwhelmed with all the clutter we have since we moved into our house over 2yrs ago. I'm constantly stressed out and feeling like I have a dark cloud following me all the time. I really need to work on decluttering, because I am not able to keep up with the mess these days.

I started watching the minimalist 7 years ago. And then I got stuck. I transitioned into The Magical Art of Tidying Up the Komono way. That was a tremendous help to me. Now I live in two rooms. I do like my cookbooks, my knitting books and some gardening picture books. And I have sign language and language books. They do take up space but they give me joy. Thank you for that talk about magazines because someone gave me a huge pile of magazines. I've had them for over a year and I haven't looked at them. Now I know what to do with them! You're a blessing and your smile and bright eyes show the sincerity and blessings you feel. And thank you both for sharing them with us.

I was still working out 7 days a week doing CrossFit with my first! (Obviously resting when I needed and wasn’t pushing too hard, just working out to feel good!)

I agree with you to an extent. I redecorated our front room before Christmas and only put a few things back in. It looks beautiful, clean and tidy. But I think a home needs to feel homely, there is a fine line between looking like an air b&b/rental and a family home 😀
It's also comforting to have photos and some things around you that are nice to look at. Flower or plants in the table things like that.

You have motivated me to keep going, here in my family the only thing I hear is: "Just get rid of everything" It's not easy for me, I don't like the mess but it is very hard to keep up with it, but your way of showing us how YOU are doing it, it's so peaceful and is not pushy, it even feels good to get rid of stuff. I stumbled on this channel this morning after devotion. So I'd like to think that it was just a nod from God that I am heading in the right direction. I'm very organized to begin with but what I found was that, the fight to stay organized made me feel unfulfilled because I spent way too much time doing it and not enough time on the things that mattered. Soooooooooo since February I have been downsizing everything and what I've found is that my quality of life is much better. I am a makeup artist, writer and overall creative nerd so I still make space for my books, my make kit and inventory as well as my passion projects. I have basically switched my home to like a digital space--no DVDs, scanning paperwork in, etc. I still have a bit to go BUT not far. I'm so happy to really understand that less is definitely more and better.

Thank you for sharing your house and giving a tour. I feel like I waited many years to become a minimalist because I knew that I would be moving overseas, but didn't know when until this year. We moved 6,000 miles from home and packed 45 boxes to ship to our new house. For four months, we didn't have those boxes and only had the things we had brought on the airplane with us. It was VERY interesting and challenging, but I enjoyed having WAY less stuff to manage. Now we have a house the same size as our old one, but about half of the stuff we used to manage. It is very comfortable and I am loving it!

Liiving like this makes cleaning sooooooo much easier. I clean our home in about 15 minutes. Live as if company is always going to come over and life is so much cleaner and easier. Be confident and proud knowing if someone opened drawers or closets that they will see only neat, organized, clean spaces. Having a family room ( I don't have one) makes a big difference too

    Dawn,
I love your kitchen, dining room, and especially your living room!
I also noticed that your children READ instead of having endless screen time. 👍👍👍👍👍
I watch all of your videos, and have recently used your idea of putting the lids onto plastic containers when storing. It's awesome...no more hunting for lids.

We have a small home as well and I am going to get rid of more toys. I’m running into a few glitches; We have seasonal things for clothing since the weather gets extremely hot and extremely cold, we have a farm so we have farm clothes and town clothes, we live away from town so I need to keep several things on hand because I can’t run to town to get things frequently. Also, since our house is small, I’m constantly trying to find better ways to store things. I truly want to downsize, and what I have managed to downsize, we have all truly enjoyed. Thanks for the tips and encouragement. 👏🏻

I just saw some of the videos...nice! So im starting smallish but my strategy is room by room as i paint the room calm, everything to the center, what i cant find a place or doesnt have a place/ match etc goes out to gsrage sale. Leftovers from that goes to the womens shelter! Thanks for simple inspirations. I tead somewhere about making my furniture match by repainting so im doing that as well i started in the living room for that. Visually calming and reusing my own but ditched the love seat and coffee table because both are just in the way clothing holders for my husband

We have definitely done the "onion method," though I never would have called it that before. I've been simplifying and getting rid of stuff for years (through being pregnant with and having two kids), but you've given me the kick in the butt I've needed to REALLY simplify! This is by far the thickest layer of the onion so far! Totally pared down my daughter's toys and books, boxed up close to half of my clothes (still keeping some maternity ones cause we plan for baby # 3 soon), and got rid of over 100 of my own books! Our kitchen was already pretty close to minimal, but everything else we're making huge strides on! It's been fun--and a lot of work! Thanks for all the encouragement!

Perception is so important in minimalist living. I’ve been in my journey of zero waste and minimalism for about two years now. I’m further along zero waste than minimalism but it’s on my mind often. I’m ok with that right now bc I don’t want to trash things to landfill if there is still life in them. Everyone’s journey is different.

You can tell your children from Annlaug in Norway that you dont look weird. Kids: your mom and dad are part of the people that 1000s of people all around the world look to as our rolemodels. They are teaching you kids an amazing lifestyle that is great for anyone who cares about the future you kids will grow up in: living simple is good for the climate and the animals in the wild and you mom and dad are helping a lot by making their videos and teaching other grown up people how to be nicer to nature and to our planet.

I have continually tried to get rid of things slowly for years (but the challenge is I keep buying more stuff, lol). My husband passed away 4 years ago. My younger daughter left for college in the fall. I moved to downsize from 2300 sq ft to 1700 sq ft (it’s a start). Just the cat, small dog, & me. Lots of culling before I moved, but kept stuff on purpose to see what I wanted in new house. Since I moved in October, have gotten rid of lots! I am ready to go through again & get rid of more. Next up is the garage in spring. Who needs 3+ brooms (I had one on each level & garage before). I love your videos. I am ready & it is taking me to the next level. The “Christian” part was a surprise & added bonus. I’m really enjoying following your series. Thanks!

What a great home tour! I've watched many home tour videos and they always end up feeling kinda braggy and making me feel disconnected from the homeowner or that what I have isn't good enough. But you guys nailed it. Your tour was simple and welcoming and you explained "how" and "why" all along the way. I love that your videos always empower and inspire us, rather than discourage or shame us! Melanie Merkle I started with the places that were driving me most crazy because they had the biggest impact on my motivation to keep going. If you live with others a main room like the living room can be a good one to start with as it will be noticeable to the whole family. I have slowly been decluttering my whole house and I came home Saturday to my husband cleaning!!! So it can work 😂

You were such an encouragement to me and made it so simple to follow and to organize my home files. I came to my Ah Ha moment when I looked at my book shelf and realized it was cluttered with things I don't need but just felt guilty about getting rid of. Now I can't wait to tackle each room of my house. You are just so down to earth and realistic and I love watching your videos. Thank you so much for helping others in these areas. I;m not a minimalist per se - my house is not cluttered but I do like my collections. However, after watching your video and seeing how you organized your drawers, I decided to clean out mine throughout my house. It took a week, but OMG I love my drawers now. I threw out / gave away so much that now several of my drawers are empty or near empty. I had junk I forgot about and didn't need. Your video was a great inspiration.

I have always purged 1-2x a year, however, you have inspired me to question in ways I never considered before. So far I have taken before photos and headquarters area to always focus on first is the kitchen. I have done 2 drawers and cupboard. I looove it! 6 spatulas. 3 peelers even though 2 I hated etc etc etc. Now all cutlery etc fits in drawers, and don't need extra storage thing that I hated. Donated 1 grocery bin of kitchen stuff so far. So exciting. My sister and I are doing it together she send me her before and after photos to keep us motivated. God bless u :) and thanks!

Thanks to you I have started on my journey a few weeks ago. I already got a whole minivan full of stuff GONE and I’m starting again going through my house. Baby steps. A little at a time. Right now I am doing the more tedious decluttering and still trying to get used to having less dishes (keeping up with washing the few we have out). I have all small kids so I’m doing all of it on my own right now. When they get older I look forward to their help with house upkeep. :)

This is what I needed in 2020. Just bought my first house and one of my goals is to not fall into the trap that I see so many people fall into where just because they have the space, they feel like they need to fill it up. Since I have a clean, empty house, I want to keep it clean and decluttered.
