Considering you have four children, you have much less than most people I visit which is a good thing. Also, unless it's for the camera, they are so polite, you and Tom should be so proud of yourselves for the way you're raising them. And those cakes looked amazing.

I get such a kick from Tom saying he likes everything in its place, he hates messes, etc…and who leaves his clutter in plain sight all the time?! Tom does!🤣 ❤️Dawn maybe you need to empty a cabinet in the kitchen just for Tom’s tool dump. That way he knows where his stuff is and it’s out of sight.
I’m old enough to be your mom and I’ve learned so much from you. And other things that I already had implemented-well it was nice getting validation that I was on the right track.😁 Thanks for all your hard work. It is appreciated.

Admittedly i struggle with clutter (recently found Dawn and Cas and am working on it) but he's got zero room to talk 😂 he loves to tell me I have so much to declutter while standing next to a folding table we can't break down because it's stacked 2-3 feet tall of his miscellaneous stuff.
If I look at it and give a 🤨 face he'll tell me we're not talking about him 😂 ok buddy.

I loved seeing the Real Life house. It's actually very encouraging to see some clutter type things on your surfaces. It makes it an easier goal for me that it's NOT having clean surfaces all the time, but how quickly you can bring it to clean surfaces. Whew. That's a relief.

Your house truly looks so good, and cheerful in its “day in, day out” state. One reason why IS because you have intentionally decluttered / purged and “made room for what matters most”. I like the drill on the ledge, building materials in the corner, broom in the corner, games on the coffee table - & then the desks. Hair products on the vanity, cooking aftermath in the kitchen, your workbook in a corner... . Showing everyone’s interests and skills. Yay!
Your home is full of life. And bonus: seeing dogs and Tom outside ! So candid. Neat !
Miss Adeline looks especially lovely with her hair styled , & in her new, very smart outfit ! ( British vernacular ... my dear late Mom was British). Both your girls are SO pretty ! Like their Mama ! Thanks for sharing a typical Easter Vacation day at home with your beautiful Family ! Liz

As one "family style" minimalist to another - yes, you DO live minimally compared to most people. You have some family activities out, kitchen things, etc, which is totally normal. My main way to tell the difference? We can tidy up clutter in 15 minutes if someone is coming over, like you can. Thanks for this video!

I'm more or less minimalist (except crafting 😉) because I have mobility issues from an autoimmune disease. I had a discussion with my cleaning lady years ago -- she wanted to get rid of some knickknacks and art work. I said no. She pointed out that she's the one that has to dust. I pointed out that most of my existence is in the recliner and I need pretty things to look at. We never discussed it again.
That said, if the Pioneer Woman serving tray brings you joy, get Tom to put some sort of mount on the wall. You'll see it every day and take it down to use it -- like old farm kitchens of yesteryear. And the teal matches your cabinets!

We've known that your house still becomes untidy, but seeing an ordinary day in the life in all its glory AND having you talk through it all is extra helpful somehow. I think especially when you just accept that some things stay a bit untidy at times, it helps me to feel better about giving others the space to tidy when the time is right rather than, "it must always be perfect!" I believe kids also especially appreciate that as they develop their own habits and become more independent 😊

We live much simpler than many but it doesn't necessarily always feel different because we still have a threshold where we feel overwhelmed and know it's time to reset. I was encouraged though, when a gal came for Bible Study and said she was so inspired she went home and got rid of like 200lbs of stuff. I didn't say a word about how I aim to be minimal, she was just so inspired by how it felt! Super exciting to help others just through our home being comfortable and manageable!

I’ve been watching you for years, but the more “realistic” style videos are always my favorite and feel less scripted! :) This helps us see the real side of minimalism.. I consider myself a “family minimalist”… as in.. I have 3 kids, they have things, they love to create and make stuff, etc.. we still cook and have dirty laundry and dishes at times, but as you say, we can have it all picked up in about 30 minutes!! I have always felt confused as to how I have decluttered so much and consider myself a minimalist, especially compared to everyone else I know, but still can’t reach the “UA-cam” status in my home! Lol. I know that was a lot to say, but mostly I appreciate seeing your real life bc it maxes me feel normal!! 🤪

Sometimes I feel like we still have way too much stuff in our house, but we’ve been house hunting for the past several months and the amount of stuff in some of the homes we’ve viewed is staggering. So often I’ve thought how glad I am we don’t have to pack up these enormous, overcrowded basements! So I don’t know that we’re actual minimalists, but I think we do have less than average. And it’s still a work in progress paring it down even more :)

Your family has learned how to selectively manage wants and needs in a practical manner. You are not deprived when your needs are met and your "I wants" are indulged within practical limitations such as the square footage available, how much inventory you and yours want to manage, how much time you all want to spend dusting etc. Great example to us all.

Yours and Tom's banter on the outro is so sweet!. I think that you do live a regular, day-to-day life. I would say, simplified, rather than minimalist. I'm in the midst of moving back into town, and decluttering my semi-rural place, so that my 19 y/o daughter can live here as independently as possible. So, I've been binge-watching your content-and then sharing 'gems' with my daughter, and we are both learning together, as we go along. I remember watching Cass, years ago, and I still use some of her tips and tricks. Your five minutes matters, really resonates with me, too!. Thank-you from Northern CA.

We implemented the rule of taking something to where it goes right away because even going up or downstairs only takes 6 second (I timed it!). Your home has much less inventory than most homes. Although your flat surfaces collect items, before and after they are cleared of items which keeps the inventory to a minimum. Many people have decorative items on every surface and then add more items. As well, most people store items on flat surfaces, especially the floor. I keep reducing my inventory and am happier and happier with the completion of every de-cluttering exercise. Your house is very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

After 40+ years of living with to much stuff, a whole house remodel, and after moving back in we put less back in the house. It’s still a process but when we emptied the house for the remodel, I had a Dave Ramsey moment. I was just so over the stuff, almost mad at the stuff and how much maintaining the stuff had affected my life, I was just done. It made decluttering and downsizing the stuff so much easier. Even my husband got on board. We are still going thru stuff and deciding what deserves to be back in our home. Now if the house is messy, we are no more than10-15 minutes away from company ready. I love this and our daughter, a born minimalist, really appreciates the fact when we are gone, most of the work will already be done. Love your videos and Toms also. I'm have tears in my eyes because I've continued to declutter my home. After 7.5 years of feeling too stressed, depressed, unmotivated, and defeated my hubby and I are painting the interior doors!!! They've never been painted so cleaning them has been difficult. I now have the "bandwidth" to successfully tackle numerous home projects. The stumps in the yard have been ground down so I can redesign the front flower bed. My hubby put up a new light in the kitchen after 2+ years of procrastination. I can do this partially because of ongoing encouragement to declutter. Thank you so much for showing me that any progress is moving forward. Love and hugs from a sister in Christ from your beloved Texas state...

Yes, you do live more minimally, however, you inspire me to get my house to that point. I have done 4 rounds of decluttering just in my kitchen and probably have 4 or more rounds to do before I get to my stressless threshold. I am already feeling less stress and loving some of the new systems I have in place but there is more to do. I just keep slight edging my way there.

This is really helpful to me
    1. New mindset = declutter for my season of life now.
    2. Keep decluttering until I’m not stressed out.
    3. I can’t remember the third one so I’ll go back and watch again. I’m 75
    My memory isn’t good now.
TFS much love and blessings in bunches 💐

I finally did it! I bought another bundt cake pan (from Facebook marketplace) after declutttering mine. I have been making bundt cakes using your recipes for every event now! I love it. A bonus way it simplifies things is that the cake is sooooo easy to cut! No more weird sized pieces of cake 😊

Yep, we have gotten rid of so much stuff, and I feel a bit like we forget how much we used to have, because in my case anyhow, I actually don't think about the stuff that is gone. I do however know my house is much more peaceful and easier to clean up. Still working on it, but minimalism is sometimes portrayed as having nothing. You are right, we have stuff that we use and want to have around. You can still have nice things! Just not an overwhelming amount of things.

I enjoyed this video a lot. I just had my fourth baby, and I was decluttering a lot while being pregnant with him, and was doing pretty well at keeping the house clean because it was easier to reset. Then I was in bed with the new baby for two weeks, other people took care of the house, and new gifts poured in. Our house really needs some re-decluttering, and now I feel inspired to get back to it. Thanks!

When I watch your decluttering videos, I think “I’d have a hard time living this simply.” I’m still working on it! But this video really showed me the benefits! Seeing stuff in use and a bit of “mess” makes it feel more attainable. This week I did a big kitchen and pantry declutter. I reorganized my fridge and pantry so things don’t get lost in the abyss (the back of our deep pantry shelves.) And today I’m tackling the biggest project: my craft/hobby room. I have big goals!

I think you definitely live minimally, but the reason it doesn't feel like it is partly the same reason we forget how much progress we've made: our brains constantly adjust to our new environment! Additionally, we all know that in houses filled to the brim, only a fraction of items are used; by simplifying your belongings *only* to what you actually do use, you haven't really changed your routines around what's used, you have simply removed ALL of the stuff that used to sit by the wayside causing stress!
I've recently let things slide a little in my decluttering journey, but I recognize that we are SO much better off right now than before I started minimizing 2-3 years ago! It is a wonderful feeling ☺

Hello from Tucson, and YES, you absolutely DO live with much less than most people I know. Many people I visit don't even try to pick up, and just start explaining why their house looks like it does. Piles of stuff across the floor, counters, sometimes on the furniture--with no where to put it! I think it is more obvious that you are minimizing when you open drawers, closets and cabinets. Often that's when you see how much ( or less ) people are living with, and their ability to manage it all :D

Without a doubt, low inventory means quicker cleanups! My main rooms have been edited and edited until I have only what is necessary. My 'hidden treasures' as you so kindly put it, usually live behind closed doors when company comes over. And I realize if I am closing doors, I need to edit in that room as well. As one who has less energy now, I don't want to spend it just moving clutter around, but get rid of it once and never have to deal with it again. That way I regain control, I regain time and peace of mind.
And like you, my impulse buys are few and far between, and needs a mention when it finally does happen. Usually I find myself admiring something off-shopping-list for a minute in the store, and then walking past it. I never go back and pick it up, and I never miss it. That's my 'minimalist shopping.' Thanks for the honest and frank house walk-thru today.

Thanks for sharing! I love the real life! I was actually talking with the friend other day and we’ve made large strides in our more minimal and simplifying of our home. And I told her that I felt like my house was a disaster area. She said, “no way! It’s much better than it used to be and you could probably pick it up in about 10 to 15 minutes. That’s how you know that your house is not a disaster area!” I appreciated her wisdom on that. Her perspective was refreshing.
We have been simplifying heavily since my husband was deployed before Covid. I really got into the swing of minimizing and simplify my home so that I can manage it better. I have a long way to go still. But these past years have brought lots of success! Thanks for your support. And Tom your always a pleasure to have on the videos as well. (My hubby keeps his drills on the kitchen counter to charge sometimes 😅😊)

I have no idea what living "Minimalist" is exactly, but I DO KNOW that since really trying to get my household more manageable over the last month I have DRASTICALLY reduced my "inventory" since following you, Dana and Cas on youtube. So far I'm loving it and striving everyday to remove more inventory. I WILL say my garage is a disaster but there is town wide yard sale next month that everything is going in and whatever doesnt sell will be, donated, given or thrown away. I cant thank you enough for all of your videos!

Watching this made me realize, when it comes to surface clutter, not only does clutter attract clutter, but i dont think i can store much of anything on surfaces because anything on surfaces attracts clutter. My goal now is to find places to store all my surface items from now on as I have the same problem, and i constantly feel like the house is a mess because of it. Thank you for the very real video it helps put things into perscpective a lot!

I can't thank you enough for all your help. I have been trying to get control of my home for years, YEARS!! I have tried Flylady, Marie Kondo, they helped, but until I caught hold of the idea of too much inventory nothing really helped. I would spend hours getting an area looking good, but in a few days it was back to a mess. I am moving to a home half the size I am in now and without your channel I don't know what I would have done. When I get stuck weeding out things I play a couple more of your videos and it gets me over the hump. My husband has gotten on board now too and we are both loving this new and easy way of life. It is a process and in the beginning I let too much go to the new house and when I start unpacking I am going to get rid of tons more there. We have been in the process of moving stuff to the new house for seven months. It has been a big process but I am finally reaching the tipping point and I just don't want any of it anymore. We have been able to feel what it is like without all our stuff and we LOVE it. It is very addicting. Today I cleared out a two drawer file cabinet that was packed full and kept only five papers the rest was thrown away never to be touched by me again. You are my saving angel. We look forward to a home that is clutter free and company ready.

As a long time minimalist with kids myself I think “living as a minimalist” is more an underlying feeling then an active thought process at this point. The house is always easily tidied and cleaned, the kids aren’t overwhelmed in the living spaces and my home is not a source of stress for myself or my family. That’s what living as a minimalist is fort self and our family ✨ (long time viewer, first time commenting I think? ☺️)

I would say you live intentionally not "minimalist." Some channels they legit have like one chair in an entire room. That's the stereotype of minimalism. You could show us every item in your house and know why you own it and not have any surprise boxes of mystery stuff. And you work hard at keeping things intentional -- the maintenance piece of American life which gives us so much potential "stuff" every week/month/year.

You do live so much differently than most. I'm still working towards it. We just turned our old house into a "minimalist" Airbnb and it feels so amazing how tidy and how much space it has, even though it's less than half the size of our new house (we've not hardly moved in yet, so it'll get better). BUT our 3yo keeps asking to move back to our old house, and she finally verbalized why: she likes how tidy it is there! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I gotta get my act together. Your real life house tour is lovely, and a great goal for me.

Thanks for being real and showing us your 'lived in' home. Something I remind myself is that we live in a home and not a museum. And the most important thing in our home are the people.
