  • I'm Victor, and I was born and raised throughout Oakland and the Bay Area. In Collection Three: “People I've Met", we come back to the Bay to highlight some people that I've met throughout life, as well as through running this series so far. We dig more into the stories about where they're from, what they do, and explore some of the best food the Bay Area has to offer together.
    In this episode, we cross the bridge and explore the Sunset, one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco. We meet up with Sunset local and one of my closest friends, Brandon, to learn more about the Sunset, and eat a ton of great food.
    Spots Highlighted:
    • Gao Viet Kitchen
    • Mini Potstickers
    • Pineapple King Bakery
    • Cheung Hing
    • San Tung
    New episodes coming soon.

    First moved to SF in '95 and was pretty much broke my first 3 months. My go to meal each day was the Five Spice Chicken with rice/cabbage at Cheung Hueng.
    That meal was my lifeline
    🙏👌💯

      Their quality went down hill for awhile now and the prices tripled since then! Used to be like $5 for a two item combo plate. Now it's $15!

      @@joobaggs6886 Don't know what your point is. Everything in the bay area has gotten expensive over the years. $15 for 2 meals is cheap considering lunch at other places cost 25+. This isn't the 1980s/90s anymore when things were cheaper.

    I've been living in the Sunset for at least 10 years now. It's certainly isolated from the craziness of downtown SF. It's nice and cool throughout the summer and the Chinese food is plentiful.

    Keep getting after it, Victor. You're doing the food, but more importantly, the culture of your experience a service. It's fun to watch you explore and reconnect with your history while getting to watch all these amazing service industry heroes.

    Growing up in San Francisco during the '70s and '80s, I have cherished memories of the city. Back in the day going to Chinatown was an all day Saturday event - Dim Sum in the am and then grocery shopping. You went to the butchers, fishmonger, and produce store. Mom use to buy a bag of long bones to make broth and remembering we were sucking out the bone marrow before it became popular. Because we did not have a car, we took the Muni, 38 Geary bus from the Richmond district to get to Chinatown. Irving St in the Sunset District and Clement Street in the Richmond District were an excellent alternative for those who lived in the Sunset and Richmond.

    I love the fact you're covering the Sunset where I've shopped and eaten for the past 30+ years. In addition to Irving and Noriega, there are lots of great Chinese restaurants on Taraval, beyond 19th Ave. This is where you'll find a concentration of more northern Chinese cuisine, like dumplings and soup noodles. BTW, these northern cuisine restaurants are a result of new immigration patterns whereas early immigration was from southern China, hence lots of Cantonese restaurants. It's great that there's such a diversity of Chinese food available. (note: I know you [Victor] know all this, but I thought I'd add more info since many of the commenters thus far seem unfamiliar with the Sunset neighborhood.)

      @@johnnytran800 I mentioned the Irish population in a comment above before seeing this - but in short Sunset is still half Irish. The Chinese didn't take over the district, but they do have more storefronts that are visibly Chinese. Majority of the Irish businesses based in Sunset are not storefronts, they're mostly construction companies, painters, home-related businesses that you don't see. But in terms of residents, I would still say they outnumber Chinese folks.

    I have to disagree with Brandon when he says that not a lot of people outside of The City come to the area. I live in the Inner Sunset, right next to GG Park, and there are TONS of tourist who come because of the park. I literally helped a family of tourist on Saturday, with how to get back to their hotel down in Fisherman's Wharf, because I noticed they were looking at a map a the 44 bus stop.
    I live on probably the busiest block in the Inner Sunset and you know how I know this? Every Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10am, there is a line of cars trying to drive into GG Park to access The Academy of Sciences parking lot. I avoid driving on the weekends after 10am, because when I do, it takes me 10-15 mins to get from the corner of my block to my apartment, which is in the middle of the block.
    I'm an SF Native, who grew up in The Inner Rich, but now live in The Inner Sunset (exactly 1 mile from where my family still live). My story is very similar to Brandon. My immigrant parents owned a Chinese restaurant on Lombard for 10+ years in the 80s.

    • @HiDidYouEatYet
      @HiDidYouEatYet  5 днів тому

      Totally hear you. I’m not in the area as much as you guys, but I can imagine it’s gotten more and more busy again as we move further away from when the pandemic initially hit. I know there’s way more events again at the park, and with the street/local events and farmer markets, I’ve been hearing about a lot of these efforts to revitalize. We actually initially shot this footage way earlier in the year too, so I’m sure even in this amount of time since then, it’s even a bit different again. Thanks for sharing!

    • @kristinelai
      @kristinelai 3 дні тому +1

      Agreed, and I also disagree with Brandon's statement that Sunset got hit hard by the pandemic and not many people visit ... 94122 is the most recovered zip code in the City based on sales tax revenues and is thriving. I can barely find parking on Irving! It sounds like he no longer lives here so it seems his assessment is from older memories.That said, it really is the best district to live and visit.
      One last tidbit of history - Sunset is not just mostly Asian, especially as you go further towards the 94116 area. The Sunset has always been known to be heavy with Irish immigrants, many working class families/blue collar. It wasn't until the late 70s did more and more Chinese arrive. My parents moved to 46th and Ulloa in the mid-60s and had to hire an Irish nanny for my brother because there were so few Chinese around at that time.

    • @joobaggs6886
      @joobaggs6886 3 дні тому

      @@kristinelai The majority of the shops that closed during pandemic were mostly on Taravel Street. Not as much asian sotres in a concentrated area like the Noriega and Irving parts.

    • @HiDidYouEatYet
      @HiDidYouEatYet  3 дні тому

      Thanks for sharing! He still lives in the Sunset today, and we did shoot this footage a bit ago, so some things may have changed more since then. I’m sure a ton of businesses were affected by the pandemic though, as it did anywhere else in the Bay. I’ve read about all the efforts in the Sunset to get people out again though, so I’m definitely happy to hear it’s been very active again! Parking in that area has always been tough when going to eat out there lol.
      Very true that the area historically before the 70s wasn’t much Chinese yet, we could have added in the Irish history before too, so appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching!

  • @bunbun376
    @bunbun376 7 днів тому +3

    I was born and raised in the Sunset right by the 22nd Irving Market in 76’ and was told by my mom on how my dad questioned the move as too ambitious for my mom to want to move out of our Broadway st apartment in C-town for his reasons that ..”there aren’t any Chinese people there!!”. Well, things change when you act on it.

    The sunset was mostly multicultural and borderline bohemian until the late 80s. Then the demographics of the neighborhood changed leading to the outer sunset being a predominantly asian.

    Gao Viet is pricey. So just be sure you bring a big wallet if you have a big appetite. 😂
    EDIT: You missed a spot. Mr. Bread on Taravel has IMO the second best egg tart in SF vs. Golden Gate. Their Portuguese egg tarts are as wait in line worthy as the pineapple buns at pineapple king.

      So where is a good place that makes good 菠蘿包? Cuz every other Chinese bakery makes it the same. Don't get me wrong I like good old fashion 菠蘿包. But Chinese bakers need to start innovating.

      “Doesn’t need to highlight” when I mention San Tung is a figure of speech lmao it’s a way of saying how popular it is already man jfc. San Tung has lines out the ass daily and literally every food content creator that visits the Bay Area already covers San Tung

      The “og local restaurants” are retiring or have already closed. It’s evident by the growing change of businesses since the pandemic That generation of restaurant owners never wanted their kids to continue the business. They did it out of necessity, not by choice. The family that owns Gao are from SF and a lot of them grew up in the avenues. The point of highlighting gao is to showcase the next generation coming back to the neighborhoods they grew up in. Idk about you but I would much rather see a local start a new restaurant than to support a big corp like the KFC that used to be there before gao. I for one embrace change and will continue supporting local businesses that brings in people to this gem of a neighborhood and I hope you do too. There’s plenty of room for both types of restaurants to thrive. Gao bringing in droves of people to walk around the neighborhood is 100x better than KFC or leaving that space vacant (which it was for years).
