  • I'm Victor and I grew up around different parts of Oakland, CA. In the "My Oakland" series, I highlight a few areas of the town I spent a lot of time in, and of course, that means eating a lot in these areas. First up is Oakland Chinatown, featuring my cousins I spent a lot of my time with growing up in the 90s into the 2000s.
    Spots highlighted:
    • Vien Huong
    • Gum Kuo
    • Binh Minh Quan
    • Shooting Star
    Other Chinatown spots shown:
    • Yung Kee
    • New Gold Medal Restaurant
    • Tao Yuen Pastry
    • Cam Anh
    • Wonder Food Bakery
    • Napoleon Super Bakery
    • Cam Huong Bakery
Did You Eat Yet? is a short video series by Victor, highlighting food and the stories that come from food.
Collection One: Where I'm From highlights Victor’s roots: A first generation Chinese American, born in Oakland, and raised around the entire East Bay. We highlight traditional Chinese recipes, hear stories from friends and family, explore the Bay Area, and share the most quintessential Oakland taco tour ever captured.
New episodes will be released soon.

Before 99 Ranch, we use to head to Oakland Chinatown on Saturdays for dim sum and groceries. Sun Hong Kong was our go to for midnight snacks in the '80's. Thanks for the memories and great video. I really enjoyed it. Hope you will continue to make this type of content. The area still looks pretty good.

Thank god for 99 ranch and the other Asian stores, now we don't need to commute to SF/Oakland for groceries. Though it was a lot of fun to go with family to eat and shop.

Man I just came across these videos. I've spent about a decade in Oakland and more than thirty in the East Bay combined. I love that you're giving these places some much deserved shine! Some are old favorites of mine as well, and some I'm learning about for the first time from your channel. Thank you for doing this.

I grew up there in the late 80's and early 90's and this video brought back so many memories. I went to Chinese school on 9th street and balled at Lincoln school everyday. We still do grocery shopping there and my dad lives in Chinatown. I now work a few blocks away on 8th street and still in the area. Great video!

I love the name of the channel, "Did You Eat Yet?" Many Chinese people, particularly the older generation, grew up very poor and didn't have enough food to eat. It's a greeting people say to each other to show they care. The literal translation is, "Have you eaten rice yet?"

I was not convinced vegetarian food is worth eating, until I tried Golden Lotus and Nature Vegetarian, and it really changed my perspective on vegetarian/vegan food.
When it comes to a hot, affordable, and really filling meal I like Tastee Steam Kitchen's single-person hotpots. For a teensy bit more out of the pocket, I like the Mắm Hanoi pho.
I loooove several places that sit slightly outside of Chinatown too; if you ever plan to try some places that are around Swan's Market, or towards 14th st, or want to try some other recommendations, don't hesitate to ask. I gotta support my Oakland City and all its awesome food!

One of my favorite spots I took my family when I lived in the Bay Area was New Gold Medal. Their wonton noodle soup had just the right amount of Hong Kong flavor with all shrimp wontons. The noodles were the best chewy kind that will always be in my memory. They also had a tomato beef Hong Kong style crispy noodles that I have not found anywhere else that makes it like they do. I hope they have kept up the tradition still. Of all things, I really enjoyed their puffy and thick shrimp egg foo young with gravy. They also had an excellent version of salt and pepper fish fillet. There is nothing more satisfying than a big bowl of juk with fish fillet with pi dan and fried youtiao on the side. I am hungry just thinking about it. Is there a special rate airfare to Oakland Airport this weekend? 😂😂😂😂😂

Last time I went to Gum Kuo Restaurant in Oakland like 5-7 years ago, we ordered a plate of Chinese Broccoli. Ga Dyam they didn't clean it cause there were soo many grubs. I was okay if it was just two or three, but there were like 10+ grubs. They didn't clean it at all. Finally just told the waiter to come over and look at all the grubs. They apologize took the plate back and didn't charge us just for that plate. Never went back since. Besides that plate, the other dishes were good. Knowing they don't really wash the vegetables, I'm not going back.

Vien Huong has been my favorite noodle joint for at least 3 decades-I always order the rare beef and shrimp noodle soup and fried fish cake. The old matriarch was always very nice to me. My late-father used to say you know VH is good because the soup is clear and piping hot. And Gum Kuo is always the first backup when the line is too long at VH. The cilantro rice noodle roll is a must, there. I'm sure we knew the same suhks and yees in the shops and restaurants.

Any big city has its crime, and you just gotta be aware of your surroundings and where/when you’re somewhere you’re not familiar with. But yeah, the crime in the whole bay area has been pretty bad recently. just gotta be smart about what you’re doing and when you go somewhere if it’s somewhere you don’t know

@@HiDidYouEatYet no shit, that’s how most restaurants operate but most don’t kick you out if you’re with a group and seat randoms right next to you or ask you to leave . I wasn’t tripping tho because I understood and I did end up ordering something. It was my first time there. this was in 90’s. I became frequent customer after. Good to see it’s still operating. This was before the expansion too. He was related to the owners, he gave me free food sometimes, he’s a cool dude. Hopefully I’ll run into him again .

is it safe to go to oakland chinatown on bart exiting the lake merritt station? If not, is it safe to park you car on the streets?

    • @HiDidYouEatYet
      @HiDidYouEatYet  11 місяців тому +4

i mean it’s “safe” to do any of these if you don’t stick out right? lake Merritt bart is a few blocks away, 12th street station is actually a bit closer if you feeling like you wanna bart. street parking is pretty difficult in chinatown, but everyone always parks at the garage at the main plaza here that i showed in the video. just don’t have any valuable stuff in your car, and be smart, and you’ll be fine

definitely do a lot of research for all the different areas before you make a decision. I grew up in east oakland, and experienced a lot of crazy stuff. just get familiar with the town before you decide you wanna do that.

Omg, it's so retro. Those are mine too. But now Oakland Chinatown is so empty and so ghetto. So many stores are closed and illegal streets vendors seem to be all over.
