- Science fiction/Action adventure/Space. Created by Gene Roddenberry. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley (Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy) - Norway Productions and Desilu Productions produced the series from September 1966 to December 1967. Paramount Television produced the show from January 1968 to June 1969. Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8, 1966, to June 3, 1969. It was first broadcast on September 6, 1966, on Canada's CTV network. Star Trek's Nielsen ratings while on NBC were low, and the network cancelled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Several years later, the series became a hit in broadcast syndication, remaining so throughout the 1970s, achieving cult classic status and a developing influence on popular culture. Star Trek eventually spawned a franchise, consisting of eight television series, 13 feature films, and numerous books, games, and toys, and is now widely considered one of the most popular and influential television series of all time.
Full Power Astern!!!
Good lord , Nimoy and Windom were so good in this scene, some of the finest acting in the history of American television
William Windon should have won an Emmy for his performance in this particular series episode, simply powerful acting. The scene where he discusses the horror of the machine that killed his entire crew and how he's almost paralyzed in expressing his emotions is the most heart wrenching I have ever seen.
Windom appeared in so many shows as a special guest star because he was so good. Under appreciated for sure.
When Shatner said the lines, "Blast regulations! Mr. Spock, I order you to assume command on my personal authority as Captain of the Enterprise!" there was no pause, no commas, no stuttering...we believed every word and we all knew that HE was Captain Kirk.
"BLAST REGULATIONS!"
And this is what makes Kirk the best captain ever: no matter what he'll do what must be done
One of the best captains in sci fi PERIOD.
Janeway is a close second'/!!!
@@kbrich-nn8od Only for people who don't understand the military.
Janeway would've done the same thing'/!!!
Not with my ship you don't!
One of the top scenes in the Star Trek franchise. Brinksmanship at it's best. It cemented Scotty as the miracle worker and Kirk's team as dedicated individuals. Phenomenal acting and if that wasn't enough, Kirk is at odds with a Fleet Commodore. Bill Windom should have won an Emmy for this.
Windom did a great job playing a tortured captain obsessed with exacting revenge against the thing that destroyed his ship. A regular Captain Ahab, but of course, that's exactly what his character was. Well played by Windom.
Yup
@@Andrew-ep4kw Agreed. Realizing they were acting, and re acting to "nothing" because the images of the Doomsday Machine were added post production makes their performance even more impressive.
Ole Bill looks like he had a few Martinis at lunch, for years
Even with the dated special effects, the drama and tension in this episode is incredible, as are the acting abilities of the regular cast and guest star. My favorite of TOS episodes.
Great choice for a "fav".
Never dated, excellent airing of the 60's version. That enhanced stuff they came out with looks cheesy.
Carthaginian60...actually parts of certain episodes were redone, much like how George Lucas had certain parts of the original trilogy redone...in this episode the internal graphics of the planet killer were redone...
Mines too
This is my favorite episode also, followed by Balance of Terror....
I like that Kirk has a flip phone and Decker is holding a floppy disk, and those things didn't exist until 30 years after this was made.
AND MR. SPOCK AND. LT. PALMER ARE BOTH USING BLUE TOOTH EAR PIECES !
And both the flip phone and floppy disk are now obsolete by modern standards.
@@paulbeaney4901 True but they nailed the prediction. We haven't seen optical data storage yet like the HAL-9000 computer in the movie 2001. Also I am still looking forward to getting a hand phaser when they come out.
SCOTTY ALSO HAS THE FLIP PHONE AS WELL !
But they didn't have seatbelts or handhold? Starfleet must've run out of money
" THAT'S IT MR. SCOTT KEEP THAT POWER COMING ! "
0:23 to 0:58 My very favorite 35 seconds in all of Star Trek. Kirk and Scotty trying like hell to get the Constellation moving to distract the planet killer from the Enterprise brings me to tears each time.
I like when the Constellation starts and everything turns sideways...
It’s unbelievable. Visceral. Silly in other situations or with other cast members, but here? Phenomenal.
My favorite line is from Kirk "not with my ship you don't." Kirk then risks his entire career to save his ship and crew. That kind of leadership is what creates crew loyalty.
The music adds so well to the dramatic acting and dialogue. Why are so many TV shows today just tongue in cheek and almost silly?
Lack of creativity.
Talent pool gone forever
I love that part when Kirk says NotWith My Ship you don't. Then Spock says Vulcan never bluff.
@@guileweaver1574 Yes, agree, Mr. Spock, relieve Comodour Decker on my personal authority as Captain of the Enterprise. Loved every word, every written line of this!

“Not with my ship you don’t.” Only Capt. Kirk could pull rank on a senior officer.
Technically Kirk is correct. He is the commanding officer of the Enterprise not the Commodore. One officer above him in the ranking structure cannot change that.
This is some of the finest acting by any 3 actors in the history of cinema. The writing and music also follow suit. IF only they made TV like this today. The drama is an absolute 10 out of 10.
Then watch the Outer Limits and the Twilight Zone as well from before 1966. The music was typical and from some of the same musicians. While you are at it, you can watch the "12 O'clock High" tv series where the "Shat" did an early episode which was one of his best performances. He also did one of the most famous Twilight Zone episodes where he played a burnt out passenger aboard a flight which had a Gremlin outside. Very spooky for its day. It still gives me chills when I remember the original episodes as a very young boy.
In 12 O'clock High, he played a Jewish U.S. airman or soldier who had a personal battle with the Germans. I've watched that episode many times on Netflix just to see how good he was as an actor in his early 30's.
I SAW THAT. It was so excellent, he pulled up the window shade and the gremlin was looking in...
@@mikeleo1 one of the best ever made!
@@daffidavit thanks for the heads up...I am shocked and saddened to see how many haters of Shatner showed up at the 12 O'clock high.
@@jaimhaas5170 Jaim, I'm not sure what you mean by this comment. Can you explain so there is a context that we might be able to comment about? I remember Shatner on the episode of "12 O'Clock High" where he was a wounded airman who was seeking revenge. His acting was from the gut and authentic as a young 30 something man. Thanks in advance.
I remember seeing this in early reruns in the late 60s when i was about seven, and the Doomsday machine sacred me to death. I went to bed thinking it was going to come up and chop the Earth apart. This episode left an impression that has lasted fifty years. I still love this scene. I also loved how they still used all the old nautical terms like "Full power astern."
I thought they were bringing it back for Star Trek IV.
1:42 Kirk: Now if i only had some phasers..
Scotty: Phasers? You've got them. I have one bank recharged.
Kirk: Scotty... you've just earned your pay for the week.
😂
My favorite episode, the doomsday machine.
Decker...were going to turn and attack..
Kirk...NOT WITH MY SHIP YOU DONT.
One of the best kirk moments in the entire original series.
Decker...your bluffing...
Spock...vulcans never bluff.
One of the best spock moments as well.
Try to beat spock on logic and proper procedure, hes going to cut you to pieces every time.
I enjoyed seeing that arrogant bastard swallowed up by that thing's maw'/!!! What a waste of a good shuttlecraft though'/!!!
Scotty...you just earned your pay for the week! Fantastic...!
Possibly my all-time favorite TOS line!
@@josephgentile9050 Good choice! This episode has a great number to choose from.
He says the same to Chekov in “Who Mourns for Adonis”
"Phasers?! You got 'em"...the first time I watched that, I was "hot damn! let's rock!!!"
My favourite episode ever. When Kirk orders Spock to take command of the Enterprise....just fantastic!!
Nice to see the original visuals again. Just as I first saw them as a kid and what made me fall in love with this show.
Vulcans never bluff. Epic!
That's were Spock said in the reboot "Vulcan's never Lie" to Kahn when Spock told Kahn the "torpeodos are yours".
Even Clint Eastwood got excited when he heard this line.
Leonard Nimoy's acting was impeccable. Looking straight at Decker, he simply used two fingers to cooly signal the security guards. Such a smooth move! And Shatner, you really saw how the Enterprise was his baby!
@@chelliebean5773 welcome to the boy's club. You certainly are welcome with such well stated observations like you have made here. :)
@@chelliebean5773 An "impeccable" observation.
I love the way Kirk took back his ship by telling Spock to take command of the enterprise. Love the way Kirk and Spock work together.
Loved this episode as a young lad..........probably first saw it in the UK in early 70's..........for some reason i always thought of the Doomsday machine as some sort of alien carrot. Anyway.......its quite remarkable that these episodes are still watchable today when this episode was originally screened well over 50 years ago!
I don't know how to describe it eloquently enough, but who doesn't feel some kind of emotional rush when Capt Kirk tells Scotty to keep that power coming?
I've seen this episode again and again for over 40 years since I was a teenager.
That's the power of the original Star Trek!
I love the sound of the Engines
Scotty had only just got them operable again.
They sound like me trying to start my car with a 20 year old battery in it.
Oh, yeah! Sub-Lightspeed acceleration has NEVER been better portrayed with ANY audio effects since...😉
If you ever get to go to Ticonderoga and stand in the engine room with that sound... Better than the bridge. Which is awesome.
I love this whole ep, but especially this couple of scenes
This is my favorite scene, when the ship starts up, and his communicator falls on the floor ....
One of my favorite parts to this scene which shows the balance of power shifting is when Spock relives Decker, just prior to that Lt. Palmer looks real defeated, but as soon as Spock makes his statement her whole facial body expression changes. Just watch her from the point Spock steps down to the chair.
Sulu was relieved, too. His attitude and tone of voice changed when Spock took control.
He,actually said,,,,Vulcans don't bluff,,,,,
Can you imagine being a technician on the set during the first few episodes of TOS, and watching the magic unfold for the first time with these fine actors and these sublime scripts? "Hey, we've got something here!", was probably uttered more than once.
This one scene is the CORE or PURE Star Trek! Thanks to all who made it memorable.
One of my favorite episodes!! I love the original star trek episodes!! Classic!!
Now THIS is what I like to see! No enhanced stuff they came out with, just the good ole 60's aired version of this episode, can't beat it, didn't need enhanced. The Original Star Trek series RULES MAN!
WAY back when I was in college, "Scotty" came to speak and he showed this episode!
Wow! I am so envious.

Nowadays there,s one Star Trek spin off after the other but we just have to accept that sometimes there,s no going back to the greatness of the original.
Best part of the episode. I like how they were able to get the damaged ship moving to save the Enterprise.
Scotty could fix anything!
That's what I like about Federation star ships; they can be beat to shit and yet still keep on ticking, and the Constellation is proof of that!
But only Scotty can keep em moving.
@@jaimhaas5170 Yeah, I'll give you that
The Constitution-Class starships (even in refit form) can really take a beating. The Galaxy-Class, not so much.
@@D725U
The refit Constitution (Enterprise Class) was seriously the probable best ship in Star Trek.
@@Idazmi7 Rather liked, STILL like the original Constitution Class Starships. Never cracked up over the refit, CERTAINLY don't at all like that cheesy next grneration stuff nor the ship, it looks like a giant foot crushed it. Besides, Kirk was a MUCH better Captain than that goofy chrome dome picard there, all he does for an hour is flip his hands over his stupid head and say engage make it so. How cheesy.
spock is such a badass in this scene
I gotta say, whenever I run into a Doomsday Machine it's such a freakin' HASSLE!
3:19 best acting Shatner has ever done. That sinister look slightly away from the camera. Absolutely the best thing ever.
@ J R. You seem to forget Shatner's superb acting in "The City On The Edge Of Forever" Star Trek episode and his superb performance in "The Andersonville Trial" made-for-TV" movie, not to mention his excellent acting in "Miri", "Charlie X" and "The Conscience of the King" Star Trek:TOS episodes.
Btw...did the Commodore ever take a shower before assuming command?😮
The greatest moment in this segment is when the _Constellation"s_ one working phaser fires, with the music swelling up in perfect timing. An ultimately doomed ship but she still had at least one kick left in her.
" SCOTTY GIVE ME THAT POWER ! "
Definitely one of the best episodes. This is #2 on my top 15 list(couldn't squeeze everything in on a top10.) with "Mirror, Mirror" at #1 and "City; Forever" at #3.
This episode and Balance of Terror are my two favorites...

Right on brother...we all feel it too.
This is my favorite episode with so many incredible moments, but I am always moved by the poor, beaten underdog Constellation going in for one last fray with the machine that killed her crew.
Nicely put. Those ships could take one hell of a beating and still kick some ass.
Lol! "Mr Scott it worked, great! ...uh, I think it's great... Scotty get us out of here!"

I would love to see shows like this nowadays but we can't go back in time or can we?
Spock, where are you?
Sol Kaplan a great composer

A resurrected and vengeful Doomsday machine would make a good film
I can't believe how good TV was back in the 60's! In 2024 I just want to live in a forest.

Love the look on Lieutenant Palmer's face when Spock says "Commodore Decker, you are relieved of command".... her face says, "Take that!, you arrogant fool!"
"NOT WITH MY SHIP YOU DON'T!!!"
coolest part was the two ships 'defending ' each other keeping the machine busy and the power play by Kirk
Kirk is the man. Even on a pile of crap space ship he saves the day.
"Keep pouring it on, Scotty."
"Captain, I still don't know what we're doing."
"We're moving, the _Enterprise_ isn't. Maybe that thing'll see us and let the _Enterprise_ go. If only I had some phasers..."
"Phasers? You've got 'em. I've got one bank recharged."
"Scotty! You've just earned your pay for the week. Stand by... Fire phasers!"

"Gentlemen- I suggest you beam me aboard......"
No pressure on Scotty....
Vulcans never bluff!
I don't think they even sweat.
Said only in the way Nimoy could deliver. Mikey Spock and crew are blasphemy to TOS.
The new Star Trek presents Kirk as someone who didregards authority and does whatever he likes. Bullshit. This scene shows Kirk for what he is. A brilliant leader who cares about his crew and ship and if you endanger thise things for no good reason, he's going to put you in your place, no matter the cost to him.
Great movie.

Spock with the boss move...
For some reason I remember Spock saying something like "Engaging now is suicide, and attempted suicide is a basis of mental instability, and I'm relieving you on that basis"... or something close to that.
Good memory. That came earlier in the episode, when Decker insisted on a probably suicidal maneuver. In fact, it was this maneuver that led to Kirk’s urgency here.
Close. On that occassion Decker backed down so Spock wouldn't relieve him on that basis.
"But don't you understand? We've GOT TO DESTROY IT!"
"That, sir, is illogical. It is suicide. Attempted suicide would be proof you are psychologically unfit for command. If you don't veer off, I shall relieve you on that basis."
some photon torpedoes with antimatter surprise packages, nothing but love.
It was said earlier that the Doomsday machine was generating an energy field that nullifies antimatter reactions. The Enterprise was stuck using impulse power and phasers.
The effects are way better than sterile CGI
In hindsight Decker’s comment about “now it’s our turn,” absolutely saved the Constellation. The Doomsday machine was headed to attack but between the two ships, it somehow caused it to move off to refuel itself in preparation for two targets.
BLAST REGULATIONS!
Wow....when Scotty gives you "power" you better hold on to something!
Now you do have to remember the constellation was kind of f***** up at that point her warp drive was completely out and ruined her impulse system was in good enough shape to use but Scotty had to cross connect the warp drive controls because the ones for the impulse drive were completely fused but still it's pretty cool that Scotty got the impulse drive working One Bank of phasers recharged Shields up to some extent and ships communications hooked in but then let's face it Scotty is kind of a miracle worker as far as engineering stuff is concerned kind of on the same level as Geordie La Forge, Miles Edward O'Brien, B'Elanna Torres, and Charles Tucker III!

Finest Line Ever an correct in the Navy 4:05 - Vulcans never bluf.
Couple trivia tidbits. The Doomsday theme in this episode predates the Jaws theme. Commodore Decker is the father of Capt. Decker in Star Trek The Motion Picture.
Ahem... this episode was produced a good decade before Jaws, so... is Jaws that predates the theme.
Scotty you just earned your pay for the week
The Constellation and the Enterprise statuses sounds like Star Trek II: "Warp drive out, deflector shields down, transporter under repair. We are on emergency impulse power."
Best music score in any TOS episode. (Although Kaplan's other score, for The Enemy Within, comes close.)
The fight music from Amok Time is very good, too. It not only was re-used in other episodes, but has been used in other shows in the last 50 years.
@@patricksavage3104 stellar ...it was spine tingling.
Reeling and a rockin’!
The dramatic background music reminds me of the movie Jaws filmed 10 years later.
The special effects are primitive to the point of ludicrous, and yet the writing and acting are so good as to make you believe it all.
Enterprise vs giant cream horn...a confection has never been more dangerous.
You can see it in his smile ,he's enjoing it.?
My favorite ep with Amok Time and Mirror, Mirror right behind. And William Windom takes his place with Ricardo Montalbon as the only two people who could out-Shat the Shatner.
Notice the lighting across Kirk's face. A dramatic stripe, that you see in the high stress and desperation closeups for he and Dekker. That was very common in the first 13 filmed episodes of season one, then it started to taper off with most directors. This one was shot well, the best episode of season two, the bridge direction is very special, as you see them move about the whole bridge. In the epilogue Kirk and Spock even walk in front of the main viewer.
For the CGI vs Models. This episode I'm torn. The machine, as cheap as it was looks better as a model. The Enterprise does too. However the Constellation was rendered beautifully in CGI as were the asteroid fields of debris and the debris collisions. The model Constellation always looked like they grabbed a plastic boxed model from the store and cut it up a bit. The final walkaround in front of the viewer looked better in CGI since it showed the dead machine.
The machine in the script was to be a gigantic octopus, but it ended up as a windsock dipped in plaster. I don't think the mechanical octopus in the book would have looked as good. This was more of a preprogrammed dead killer. The musical score and some of the doomsday shots may have inspired the team filming Jaws. Pacing and thematic chord is nearly identical after the shark showed itself.
well spoken.

“ I don’t recognize your authority to relieve me”
This has one of the best scenes in any movie or tv show in history…when Spock is ordered by Jim Kirk to take command…note the use of trumpets (to my knowledge, never used again in ST) and Leonard Nimoy ‘s excellent stone face acting. “Vulcans never bluff…no, I don’t suppose they do” as the security steps forward…that’s called “first rate writing “ 🎉
All Spock needed was the "order" and Kirk gave it to him😂...."Not with my ship you don't!!!"😂😂..xlassic...
btw did the Commodore ever take a shower before assuming command?😮
Commodore is cartman's future ancestor..:I don't recognize your authority!
He is supposed to be the father of William Decker from ST TMP.
What the heck is a future ancestor? You sound more confused than commodore decker.
Actually, in US Navy and British Navy, a higher ranking offer that boards the ship doesn't assume command if something happens to the captain. The next in the Chain of Command does. If there is a 4 star admiral on board and the captain dies the First Office assumes command of the ship. The admiral may give orders of where the ship is to go, but cannot take direct control of the ship. In this case, Commodore Decker is actually a captain with enough seniority to become an acting admiral should two or more Star Ships work together in the same mission. He never had a right to assume command from Spock in the first place.
But strictly for our benefit...it worked out better that he did.
@ Neil Sapre. But since Commodore Decker outranks Spock he technically could assume command of the Enterprise.
@@michaelbarlow6610 Decker could pull rank on Spock because Spock is not the captain of the Enterprise; Kirk is, and it's Kirk's ship until he is relieved or dies. That's why Kirk tells Spock to assume command on his personal authority as captain of the Enterprise.
@@johnhunter2294 . Commodore Decker relieved Spock of temporary command of the Enterprise (in Kirk's absence) because Decker outranked Spock and obsessively and delusionally thought that he could destroy the doomsday machine with the Enterprise's phasers which he knew were useless against the doomsday machine! Spock was initially unable to relieve Decker of command of the Enterprise because Dr. McCoy had not had time to perform psychological tests on Decker to determine if Decker was still mentally stable and mentally fit enough for command!
At 0:37 Much later in life, I learned of what the hypothetical "inertia dampers" were, and what would happen if such devices were inoperable ...considering the outright speeds of future space-travel.
