    For anyone interested the 3.X books for Midnight are basically essential to fully appreciate the setting. I mean that. They are so, so thickly written with not only "lore" but cultural context for all the races. It is a treasure trove for roleplaying.
    I love Midnight.

    I’m so grim dark that when the players finally bust the wall down they get eerie silence. When they peak through the realms to call the only thing they feel back is dread. Something much worse than the dark lord has befell the gods. The wall wasn’t just a prison for him but a refuge for their children. Now the players must decide if they want to continue their crusade against the dark lord or perhaps ally with him against an even greater evil.

    Glad this came back. Though, I have to say I love grimdark and would likely end with the walls being broken down and the players finding....nothing waiting for them. The gods are gone, or withered to near nothingness. Next campaign is dealing with the remnants of the Dark One's power and trying to either find the gods, find a way to bring them back to power or, even worse and darker still, stave off something that was always waiting for the void left by them.

      Yup. It's an appropriate end. Another idea I found was interesting is the the Dark One died at some point and there was a group that faked his continued existence in order to maintain power and keep his generals in check.

    Holy smokes! I remember this setting, and have a bunch of their 3.x books on my shelf. Love it, never got to play it (though I harvested a bunch of things from the setting for my own campaign). Very psyched this is out now for 5e.

    I really enjoyed Midnight back in 3e but was getting skeptical for the 5e release. There were some design choices that seemed a bit weak. Seems they did away with (at least no one has mentioned them in reviews) Covenant Weapons, Nexuses, and the language and trade system. However, you review gave me some hope that much has been brought over. I can't wait til release.
    That said, I would recommend anyone considering playing to check out the Corruption mechanic in the Adventures in Middle Earth setting. I think it slots in really well.
    Also I recommend folks check out the 3e books for content that could be adapted to 5e. There's like a dozen books that go into even greater detail about the regions and lore.

    • @nicolaricottone8377
      @nicolaricottone8377 2 роки тому

      they did away with the wildlander and defender class, there are no covenant items or charms or rules for languages (maybe that is for the best), no spell point system (i do agree with that), nexuses, trade and black mirrors are still there.

    • @billygnosis8820
      @billygnosis8820 2 роки тому +1

      @@nicolaricottone8377 Yeah the lack of Defender surprised me. They could have just taken the monk, called "ki" something like "focus" and just slapped a Defender label on it considering they share the same mechanics.

    • @Amrylin1337
      @Amrylin1337 2 роки тому +2

      @@billygnosis8820 5E for me is already overly simplistic. The Defender was notably different from the Monk in that system. Maybe they should have been braver and did similarly this time. How does the magic system work without spellpoints? Because to me that was a huge deal for tone too.

      Good call on using Middle Earth’s corruption. Simple and a good fit for Midnight.

    We played a campaign of Midnight for 3 years and it is the most epic games we played ever. This is a truly heroic setting. The players are heroes not because is the easy path, but because it is the right path. Also, lots of secrets and plot twists around.

    Thanks for the review. Still waiting for the hardcopy to become available in Canada. Clarification/correction: Pretty sure Edge Studio is NOT FFG's RPG arm -- they are different companies owned by Asmodee. Asmodee transferred FFG's RPG properties and licenses to Edge Studio.

    Such a good review!! Thank you so much, buddy!!
    Just as many others giving their opinion, I've played Midnight from 3.5, and I really love it!! How many times I've dreamed about Sauron defeating the West!! It's hard and harsh, but it's really worth the effort and suffering. We (my people and I) are about to play the last chapter of our epic history in Eredane, and I can wait anymore!! Go trembling, Izrador, your gonna fall again, and this time, it is forever!!

    The Midnight 2nd edition, for 3.5 d20, is fantastic. But, most of the mechanical changes that work so well do so because the system supports the setting. That is not the case when converting to 5e. If your group is completely unwilling to play anything but 5e, Midnight is probably a good choice. But I think it's a better choice to play Midnight using the older rules, because it's one of the best expressions of the 3.5 D&D rules you're going to find, and it won't be as frustrating as trying to shoehorn a decadent, grim setting about struggle into a system built for nigh-invincible superheroes.

    So, my group and I (the DM) played Midnight 3.0 and then got to playtest when 3.5 rules came out. I think I have every book that came out and downloaded a ton of content from AgainsttheShadow.org.
    I am not a huge fan of 5e, but bought the pdf in order to use it as a resource when I restart my 3.0/3.5 Midnight game (right now running a Pathfinder campaign).
    I am really excited to delve back into the world of Aryth and see where I can bring a new group of heroes and watch them make survival choices or run from a village after it turned them into the local garrison for traveling or having a fey race with them.

    I could see myself enjoying playing in this setting, it's very eldritch in that you're fighting against overwhelming odds and you can't necessarily win against them but I don't know anyone I think would enjoy this. I do see a lot of elements and mechanics I may steal for a homebrew I'm doing that are very similar though! This sounds cool

    Haven't seen the physical book, but if it's as light on mechanics as it sounds and it just ditches those that made the setting intriguing in the first place, that makes it sound like a pure money grab--slap some new art in hundreds of pages of old lore and charge $50+?! I'll just dust off the old books. New folks, you may just want to spend $9.95 for Drivethrurpg's Midnight 2e. And thanks for a review that saved me money!

    Warlocks are also not playable in 5e Midnight. There are no other supernatural entities powerful enough to act as patrons. You can use the Evocation feat from Tasha's to get Warlock elements. I'd add options from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft - Dhampirs, Hexenblood and Dark Gifts.

    I really like the idea of Inspiration refreshing on a rest. My players hold on to it for dear life thinking they will need it at a critical point. Knowing they will get it again could really help with that. Warlocks don't pray for their spells like clerics, they should not be affected the same way (planar disconnect).

    Can't believe people are so weak today, they have to worry about "triggers" and the publishers are equally as weak telling people to becareful of people's "triggers" instead of just making a setting and game system to operate within that setting to play and generate fun random encounters.

      I can't believe people are so weak that they don't consider that people might actually have experienced these things in real life so might not be keen to rp it... Frankly I agree. I think the disclaimers work for something like a pick up game or convention. I'm not ultimately against this kind of stuff. But I don't think "most" people, if you want to put it that way, are that fragile. They just aren't. It's the difference between asking if you're down for this genre vs "feel safe" or whatever.

    • @theexile4694
      @theexile4694 2 роки тому

      @@Amrylin1337 The "disclaimers" are dumb.
      This is a Tabletop RPG. Nothing about it can hurt you. It's literal words on some pages in a nice book. This idea that a publisher needs to "preface" anything about it because people might get "triggered" is ridiculous. Anyone that helps promote this kind of stuff are equally ridiculous and a detriment to the hobby at large.
