    I just can't understand why you would review the pedals with different riffs.

      I’m convinced he doesn’t really know how to set compression. It’s true you can set it to however you like it and perhaps he likes the studio compressor squashed, however I was hoping to hear what it can actually do. His reduction was -20 peaking off the chart squashed. I wanted to hear some breath and clarity in that pedal in particular. Oh well.

    Hmm. Playing 5 different compressors with 5 different riffs does not help at all with determining the differences, sorry. There's no way to compare now.

    To do a real shootout, you need to play the same thing through each. More boring, but useful.

    Something very few people mention in videos are the 2 thumb trim pots in the Custom Comp. One is for attack time and one is for trim that effects the high end.

    According to MXR, the Studio Compressor is the exact same circuit as the Bass Compressor, so be sure to check Reverb for both pedals and see which has the better deal.

    • @skyviewdesign
      @skyviewdesign 2 роки тому +3

      @@chenxi1619 not even a difference in frequency response. Literally the same circuit with a different name slapped on it. So many other musicians were using it, MXR rebranded it to expand the marketability of it.

    This is not a shootout ! This is a MXR merchandising! If you play the same thing in each compressor we should hear the diferences like how bad is the Dyna comp reissue compared to others for example ! But you played diferent chords and licks in each one and it is impossible to compare !!

    I have a Dyna Comp I purchased USED in 1980. It's on at least the 10th board I put together. I repair amps & effects, and this pedal has needed a few things replaced. An input jack and a pot, that's it. I like it because it's warm and round, no harsh edges. It works well with Humbuckers too. I've used many others, but for some reason, they don't play well with Humbuckers. I'm sure all those other pedals are fantastic, but to be honest, I could not hear the difference with your set up. That means that my old Dyna Comp is the one for me. I love MXR effects, the new ones are still well build and reasonably priced.

    The demo section of the M76 seems useless to me, especially knowing how the 1176 works...slamming the front of the compressor with the maxed-out input and using such a high ratio all the time seems extreme and non-representative of what the pedal actually can do.

    Hearing compression can be frustrating, especially with any licks being played because they so easily distract attention. Try ignoring the licks, while listening only to the "texture" of the sound. The compression is actually kinda obvious once there's some familiarity with how compression behaves. Becoming familiar with how compressors affect the sound can take some determination and patience.

    What uniformed players don’t know about the original Dynacomp- you evaluate it by how it enhances the feel of playing, it’s not just about using TOO much compression, which is how you demo these.
    No doubt, you use too much distortion from any pedal also of course.

    I was looking forward to this. But it is not really a very good review. I have had many great comp pedals. Keely compressor, Wampler compressor, liked the Hartman compressor which was his take on an orange squeezer, my first one was great. Right now, not playing much because of pain. I bought a MXR Custom Comp, with 2 adjustments inside and the same chip as his old Dynacomps. Sounds close to a Wampler, not as good though. Love the chickin pickin I can get out of it.

    Nothing sounds better than a Script Logo Dyna Comp but if you want a more transparent compression with variable ratio then get the M76 Studio. Dyna Comp can be noisy but I think the Studio is an optical compressor so it should be much quieter.

  • @RandyFricke
    @RandyFricke 7 років тому +2

    Let's be honest. For all intents and purposes compression is compression. With compressors it's more what you want the pedal to look like. There really isn't much difference at all between brands. You could certainly never pick them out blindfolded.

    • @Blueguitar007
      @Blueguitar007 6 років тому +1

      Yes you can..I can. I have the DC reissues and a Pigtronix and they sound very much different. It's because different pedals color the sound differently, and that compressors aren't an "effect" so much that you hear the coloring more. I like my generic dynacomp red I got for nothing actually more than the Pigtronix I paid $125 for..but the DC is too touchy on the controls and the knobs seem to shift when playing. The Pig stays the same volume. DC is old fashioned and PT is Optical so you hear the pick attack more, that is another difference in sound.

    Pedal recommendations requested: I’m looking for a pedal that is pretty much exactly like the MXR Studio Compressor (or Bass Compressor - same thing), but with midi, preferably running at under 100 mA, and not larger than a standard boss pedal. It’s OK if it is boutique; I’m willing to spend some money for the right unit. Thanks!

    Is playng two compressors in series ever done on anyone's board, or is this totally impractical for live playing? How did The Fixx do "one thing leads to another". How did Gilmour do "Shine on you crazy Diamond" ??

    • @xenod1066
      @xenod1066 6 років тому

      Mark Edwards Are you talking about two to switch between, or two in series, on simultaneously? - Lowell George of Little Feat used to use two 1176 compressors in series.
      Early Gilmour is probably an original Dynacomp, especially live. - Who knows what studio gear ended up on the records..
      Wouldn't put it past him to use two, as he used multiple noise gates as an effect.
      Some Dynacomps are extremely noisy. Good idea to test them out.
      I'd go with the MXR Studio compressor, or / and one of the recent Keely compressors.
      TC Hypergravity is not bad either.
      Might want one of them to have parallel compression. (dry mix/blend)

    • @BluePi1313
      @BluePi1313 6 років тому +1

      It's actually really useful. A lot of engineers use compression chains to round out the compression. I don't see a lot of guitarists doing it, because most guitarist use compression as a sustain.

    • @trthambi2097
      @trthambi2097 5 років тому

      Compressors are often used in series, with one at the beginning of the signal change (used for sustain, and to reduce the dynamics of the player) and at the end of the signal chain for studio polish (on the effects in the chain).

    • @Texturas75
      @Texturas75 4 роки тому

      One compressor right after the other, I don't think so, but in far different parts of the signal chain, yes. I think Andy Summers used a second DC at the end of the pedal chain to raise the volume of the delay repeats.

    Why don’t you know how informed guitarists use a Dynacomp?
    The compression is at 3:00, the output about 9:00.
    You only show settings uninformed players use.
    You don’t even make the comparison equal volume.
    Guitar on the internet is mostly uniformed kids who can’t be bothered with decent ability.
    Even Vince or Albert don’t use more compression than 3:00 on a Dynacomp.
    What are you demoing one if you don’t know this?
