    I thought this demo was super well done and very informative. I've never understood compression very well, and your demo did a great job of explaining that. Don't listen to the haters.

    Great explanation really. Great pedal. We used to say back in the day when this lil' gem came out " You don't know when it's on, but you know when it's not ". Also called " Nashville's little secret. "

    Ryan great demo, your demo is responsible of me having a dyna comp on my board. love the fact that you showed the sound of this compressor without chicken picking lol
    just straight up sound of the guitar, very solid demo, thanks man.

    Perfect.
    I just got a small deal for this off Reverb.
    I was confused by the Boss one when I started playing again two years ago, so I sold it.
    Wanted to try this one having only two controls.
    Trying after work tonight for the first time.
    I'll be trying that common setting you showed first.
    This video explained how compression and the pedal works perfectly.

    I respect everyone's opinion but I like a lot this compressor, easy to use and you can feel what is doing in your sound, love the sustain that it produces, I kind of like the fact that is not transparent, what is the point of having a compressor if you can't feel what is doing, but in my opinion this pedal is great and the price point is great too. i guess at the end is all about taste, and everyone has a different taste.

      Good compressors don't color your sound,they even out the dynamics and give you click and pop and that's a good thing.I love the DynaComp I have it,but I use it more like a coloring effect,when I need a vintage compression,otherwise I use a multi and compression.

  • @jezmez68
    @jezmez68 4 роки тому +7

    Very nice. I've kind of immersed myself in different compressors over the past week, and opted for this one because it's straightforward and I don't think all the extra knobs are really what I need for my sound. Just want to get those single coils to quack.

  • @mariosmiliadis

    Dear Ryan,
    this is the most comprehensive video revealing Dyna Comp.I just got this pedal and had the opportunity to compare it vs my Barber Tone Press.To my humble opinion Barber must be the most underrated manufacturer!!!Propably poor public relations with "opinion" makers.MXR pedal has a personality on a clean sound but stacks TERRIBLY with overdriven tones.Also is pointless with the output lower than 2.30-3.00 o'clock(It is obvious in your video).I would appreciate your comments!
    Best Regards
    Marios(Athens,Greece)

    • @kiesshauer
      @kiesshauer  9 років тому +1

      +Μάριος Μηλιάδης Agreed; I have a TonePress on my personal board, and it is superior in every way (to my ears). But really any compressor that has a blend knob and lets you add some dry signal in parallel to your compressed one (tonepress, deep six, pulp n peel, etc) are the superior ones. :)

    • @mariosmiliadis
      @mariosmiliadis 9 років тому +1

      Any suggestion for a transparent,organic booster,just to add this hairy feeling,without altering original tone?Right now I am using on that purpose Tone Press(Barber suggested setting) or Skreddy Scredriver.I have tried and pass over: RC Booster,TC Spark Booster,TC Spark Mini Booster,MXR micro amp,Rockett Archer,Rockett Blue Note and EHX Soul Food and of course both Maxon and Ibanez ts pedals,so you maybe consider what I am looking for.
      Thank You in advance
      Marios

      +Μάριος Μηλιάδης Well based on everything you've said, I am wondering about your amp; what amp are you using, do you keep it dirty or clean, and do you like it as-is without any pedals? That will help me direct you a little better.

    • @mariosmiliadis
      @mariosmiliadis 9 років тому +1

      Dear Ryan,my amp is the Two Rock Studio Pro 35 Combo.Best clean chanel ever heard,but this amp cannot get dirty by any means.My rig is(as placed):
      1.TC Polytune
      2.Vox Clyde McCoy V848
      3.MXR Dyna Comp
      4.Barber Tone Press(as a booster)
      5.Catalinbread DLS(VERSION 1)
      6.Skreddy Skrewdriver
      7.Barber Gain Drive
      8.Deep Blue Delay HW(in amp's FX loop),
      Guitars:
      Gibson Les Paul VOS 2013
      Fender Strat 1974(all original)
      Dean Evo Special Select(SD Pearly Gates)
      Ibanez AG95
      Kind Regards

    • @kiesshauer
      @kiesshauer  9 років тому +1

      +Μάριος Μηλιάδης Okay, gotcha, so you do have a good amp and you like clean stuff. :) That makes a little more sense why you wouldn't love the RC Booster. Well here's what I'd look at then: a lot of guys like the Emerson EM Drive for what you're after. The Greer Lightspeed would be my first recommendation personally, though. And then finally I use a JHS Superbolt for light drive; I run a clean amp too, and it isn't totally 'transparent' but I really like the tone of it.
      Hope that helps!

    Nice review! Been looking at these lately. Would this along with a fuzz pedal be a good combo?

    • @kiesshauer
      @kiesshauer  3 роки тому +2

      Honestly I’m not a fan of running high gains or fuzzes with a compressor. Fuzz especially compresses the signal like mad already, and all a comp seems to do is introduce extra noise. Give it a try without and I bet you’ll be pretty happy!

  • @bigfranchise
    @bigfranchise 9 років тому +2

    I dont know if its just me, but ive never heard the difference between compressed and uncompressed tone.

    • @kiesshauer
      @kiesshauer  9 років тому +3

      Belethor haha. I suppose it depends on what type of music you listen to. A lot of people (especially now that a lot of compressors have 'blend' knobs that keep a lot of the original signal alongside the compressed one) use compressors very subtly; the only way you'd be able to really tell is that the notes have a little added sustain (they trail on longer than they would if it was off). Whereas if you listen to country music, the guitar sounding real twangy and 'squashed' is stylistically what they're after sometimes. But the basic idea is generally the added sustain and keeping the loud and soft notes at similar volume levels.
      Dunno if that helps at all or if you even care, but there it is. :)

    I can’t play a telecaster without one. It keeps the string volume all evened out. If I don’t use one the G string always barks out louder than everything else and drives me nuts. Of course the Dyna comp adds a clicky sound to it which is good for country. I call it “ snap and pop”.

    • @LukeJackandWill
      @LukeJackandWill 9 років тому +4

      If you're using a power supply to power multiple pedals then a compressor can get noisy! If you use a separate power supply for the compressor, you should be fine

    Nice review. However its incorrect to say the the signal is effectively, or technically, 'expanded'. An expander expands the dynamic range meaning that smaller signals get smaller.

    This pedal, as all MXR pedals, is a miserable tone suck. Not transparent in the least. They first made these in 1979, so what do you expect? Mooer makes a Yellow Comp with true bypass and way more advanced circuitry for about the same price as this doorstop. And it doesn't kill your guitar tone. You're welcome.

    • @kiesshauer
      @kiesshauer  10 років тому +5

      Still, a ton of people use them and like the sound it gives -- especially modded versions! Good suggestion on the mooer though for people looking in this price range.

    • @grant5603
      @grant5603 10 років тому +4

      Vintage Ross and Dan Armstrong compressors are not transparent either, but they add a distinct character to the tone that some people like a lot. I personally would rather a comp that adds a nice colour than a super transparent one.

      +StratFinders Music You are not fair. This is a very cool pedal that is not too harsh when it comes to cutting the tone. It sounds good for what it is suppose to do. David Gilmour has the script version of Dynacomp. If he likes it - so can you. Mooer pedals are definately not better than MXR - forget it!

  • @DrLumpyDMus

    These minutes of unstructured talking followed by eleven seconds of one, strummed guitar chord. Why do so many pedal reviewers seem to think we want to hear a VERBAL description of a sound instead of just plain HEARING the sound? Geez, PLAY the thing, stomp the box, play the exact same thing. Repeat with different licks. Stop with all the yackin.
