Even if you were a metal head like me back in the 80’s, there were three albums every rocker secretly had, but refused to tell anyone. They were Purple Rain by Prince, Thriller by Michael Jackson, and Rio by Duran Duran because of bassist John Taylor. If you got caught with it in your room, you blamed your brother or sister, even if you were an only child. Prince’s fingers metaphorically made love to those six strings and they responded to his touch. Definitely a world wide loss. RIP Purple music master.

I went to a Prince concert... the man was a perfectionist. The stage was in the middle of the venue and he played in the round. There was no backstage. He rose up on a platform from under the stage. He played to every side facing the audience. There was not a flub, a missed note, a missung lyric... The audio was perfection... no distortion or mic squeals. You could have recorded that concert from beginning to end and put it on TV with no editing or post production. It was brilliant.

"I am jealous of you, back in the day!"
Back in the day, Prince challenged us. He was hyper-sexual and androgynous in the early days of MTV; people were a little shocked by him.
But, as Amber says, "He is everything." He's such a remarkable, captivating artist; you just can't take your eyes off of him. We just couldn't get enough of it!
Fun historical note: MTV originally had no intention of playing Black music; it was envisioned as a channel for rock kids, who were overwhelmingly white. But two artists made it impossible for MTV to ignore Black American music: Michael Jackson and Prince.

Watching your reactions is a true treat; those days were a fantastic time that has reached out in some way that still influences music to this day. I was a freshman in high school when Purple Rain came out, and watching the world lite up in Purple was an unforgettable time. The first time I ever saw Prince perform live was in the mid-90s in San Jose, California; he jammed on stage that night with Carlos Santana and in this amphitheater, and let me tell you, THEY BOUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE THAT NIGHT!!! The director of PURPLE RAIN wanted some music for a downtrodden part of the movie, Prince said no problem, and recorded this by himself at Sunset Sound. The guitars, keys, vocal overdubs, and drum programming are all him. The track is so basic he left out the bass because he decided the song worked without it.

Not always the nicest guy to work with, though. He's left studio musicians he's worked with traumatized. (Sinead O'Connor for one) There's many. many stories. Lisa from Prince's band The Revolution has spoken about it. That could be said, though for many artistic geniuses. Steve Jobs comes to mind so I'm not singling him out. I was in my 20’s the entire 80’s decade, yeah, it was a blast , and the music(like most other decades) was a huge part of it, cool and edgy but classy, so much good music, music, clothes, fun attitudes, we could have fun without some s--- starting (most days and nights) , and most older folks still loved the music and the clothes and everything, just cool fun times. You should watch classic MTV and BET videos, 80’s TVs shows and movies (like Purple Rain), and even classic 80’s tv commercials , that’s the way we did it! Prince IS everything!! Purple Rain (movie and album) came out in the summer between my junior and senior year of high school. I was already a fan from his earlier work, but Purple Rain was a masterpiece. I LIVED for Prince! He possessed such incredible charisma, magnetism, coolness, beauty, and otherworldly musical prowess that it was mesmerizing to watch him. I was like your mom and had tons of Prince posters on my wall. A friend and I used to spend HOURS in the car listening to Prince music. I am still heartbroken over his death and cannot listen to the song Purple Rain (or Sometimes it Snows in April) without crying.

I remember when Prince's first single, "Soft and Wet," was released in 1978. I collected all of his albums over the years, saw Purple Rain ten times, and met him in person in 2004. He was an extraordinary individual.

@@willdwyer6782 saw Prince live twice back in the day. He could shred with the best...I think perhaps it kinda got overshadowed because of everything else he could do. Compose, write, produce, engineer, sing, play a plethora of different instruments, etc. One of those "generational" talents taken way too soon, and we fans are the worse off for it.

It amazes me that there are people alive that didn't get to experience the 80s and 90s. Those were the best decades ever, the nostalgia is strong. Though I loved living through them, I now realize that I kinda took them for granted. Seeing young people rave over that time is cool but a bit weird for me.

Fellow Oklahoman here (Tulsa area) You guys crack me up. I just turned 42 yesterday. Every time a song from the 80's comes on I am automatically back in my childhood. Most if not all 80's is my jam. I grew up on Prince, MJ, Madonna, Cindy, Kenny Loggins...all of the 80's greats. I honestly can't stand most of the music today. If Doc Brown showed up in a Delorian at my house I would be headed back to the 80's. I remember hearing When Doves Cry on the radio. On the Casey's top 40 for the first time and seeing MJ moonwalk for the first time. It was the like 80's version of seeing a man walk on the moon.

If you haven’t yet, check out his Super Bowl performance and the ensemble performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Edit: An interesting thing about his concert: he told parents who brought their children when he was going to play adult-themed songs, so they could take the kids to the lobby if they wanted. I thought that was very sweet. ❤️

Fun fact, I remember how hot this song was, and in Memphis we have a rock station that all through the late 70’s and 80’s never played anything but rock( Rock 103 Memphis) , and I understood that, and they never played anyone black except for Hendrix , and I understood that, cause who else black played rock. Well , one day in 1984, I flipped on the channel, and yes they just had to , they were playing Prince When Doves Cry! Now I don’t think they ever played another Prince song or even another black artist ( I don’t even think they played Lenny Kravitz in the 90’s) , but it was good enough for me to here that played one time! 👍🏾✌🏽🤟🏾
