Only Prince could write a song with no bass and it works. Just like his song KISS.
I never payed attention to those songs not having bass until it was pointed out here..😮
@@AJimiDigginKat The genius that was Prince
I felt some kind of way about the song not having any bass... until I saw it in concert I said "nevermind"😂
It had a baseline he took it out and used it sometimes at live shows
The drums are bass enough
Prince wrote this during the filming of Purple Rain, he went home after filming all day, wrote the song overnight and returned with it the next day! “Talent” isn’t a big enough word to encompass all that Prince was...is! So missed, always.
yup, they told him they needed another song for the montage in the movie, and he was like "okay, I'll just whip up something iconic."
Prince played 21 different instruments and had an incredible vocal range. He truly was amazing and is so missed.
I have NEVER seen a reactor catch on to the fact that there is no bass. As a bass player, this song has always impressed the hell out of me. How full and funky the song is without any sort of bass. It's like his vocals are the bass line. Great catch.
Now pay attention to KISS and BLACK SWEAT...
We all knew it, just didn’t exactly understand why it was so good with the bass dropped out.
Prince knew, he composed it to take you on his journey.
You don’t get bass until he wants you to have it then he gets funky with it.
Even though the video makes it look like he’s not, Prince is actually playing the guitar here. In fact, Prince is playing every single instrument here. And doing all the vocals, and the production, and… everything lol
Actually it was Wendy who played it and she gets pissed off when people say she did not.
@@jeanettebarker919 Hm, didn’t know that, I know Wendy played the solo on the purple rain tour. On PrinceVault it says Prince all vocals and instruments…
@@gabriels1869 Although rarely they do get the odd thing wrong on there.
@@jeanettebarker919Prince played it on the record and likely that was what was played to lip sync to the video. Now it makes sense that Wendy would play it on the tour.
@@lisajones1187 I am going by what Wendy herself said. She also said that Prince would credit them on songs they did not play on and not credit them for songs they did play on.
Everyone talks about Michael Jackson being the king.
Prince had everything and more.
RIP Prince, we miss you...
Let MJ be the king of pop, Prince is the GOD OF MUSIC!
Authority in bloodline is counter to age and wisdom and granted to the YOUNGEST!
PRINCE, had it ALL. All Kings submit to their son or the prince.
Agreed. Michael Jackson was an entertainer. Prince was a musician and lyrical genius.
@@JohnSmith-hf4tv #PrinceISMusic
The entire song is performed by Prince. It’s amazing
This was Prince venting about his rough childhood. He was kicked out his home around 12 give or take. Way too young. Had an abusive step father & his parents weren’t the worst but not the best for a child like that. He performed every instrument on this but the way he reacted to his dancing. He’s gotta see Prince dance
The only man that could take a song to #1 without a bass line PRINCE!!!💜💜💜. And your daughter is gorgeous
Prince originally recorded it witn a bass line but decided to take it out. Straight genius.
Yup.....That's Prince playing guitar. In fact everything you are hearing on When Doves Cry is him....keys, drums, vocals, background vocals. Dude was a bad man.
The band is just miming it for the video, it's Prince on all instruments and voices.
Wendy played guitar
@@mrsd1095 Nope
Prince is the GOAT Listen to songs before Purple Rain. Some of his best work was then in my opinion. 💜💜💜
What made "When Doves Cry" so iconic in pop history is that he purposely decided to leave out the bass because he felt that the song was rawer that way. If you hear his live version of this song he would sometime add in a bass.
I'm unable to sit still, when listening to this song... I've seen him live, and I consider myself very lucky, because it was amazing!
I was 30 years old when this song came out and it really impacted me. I am a huge Prince fan from day one. I regret we didn't get more music from him. Absolute genius, the complete package. For those of us hitting the Disco and concerts back then he was a fav. Many tried to make it a competition, who do you like better Prince or MJ. MJ is great but my answer will always be Prince.
That footwork right before the synth solo was hard af
Fun fact: Written and recorded by Prince alone, every note and voice, after it was decided they needed a catchy "radio" single to release prior to the album / movie. He did it over a weekend.
Yeah, the clothes, the hair-very 80’s. OMG, what a little scene stealer! Great reaction, and go with those priorities!
Musician, singer, writer, actor, dancer, what could he not do and excel at? 15 number 1 hits and 8 number albums worldwide,. Songs he wrote for other artists that made the top 40 lists. Reportedly written between 500 to 1,000 songs in total.
ICONIC
one of my absolute favorite PRINCE songs.
So good, so different. I love bass, but this song makes me forget all about bass. 💖💖
And a sidenote; Yes, there are some short men that could learn a thing or twelve from Prince.
The sass, the confidence, the s-appeal. He's one in a lifetime.
Fun Fact: during the time of Purple Rain fame and dance clubs - we all knew of Prince’s dance moves from the each song and, when the songs played, we All would dance them. So much fun!
fun fact and now your saying back in the day you were dancing Princes moves get real- Sounds like a Charlie Murphy story! You should have applied for a dance position a couple of more drinks and you will really be dancing like Prince!
yep...every time
His engineer said the original was too much but then he "unproduced" it by taking things out, including the bass. This is my all-time favorite song and I am glad you reacted to the complete version - I love the solo and ending.
Watching Prince jump around and dance in 5” heels 👠 is amazing! 👵🏼💜☮️
The damage from which he developed the need for the pain meds 😢. It’s beautiful but makes me so sad at the same time
You can see why he had hip problems later and towards the end was using a cane. I'm sure that was also a big factor as to why his last tour was him sitting and playing piano,.
He was an amazing singer, song writer and guitar player. He was a truly talented musician.
Prince is amazing 💜 He checks every box
One of my all time favourite songs and thanks for listening to the extended version, so much better than the normal one that other reaction channels do
Here, here! I get so frustrated when people react to the radio version lol! The last bit is the best IMO!
Your daughter is ADORABLE!!!! lol......Prince plays 19 instruments and plays guitar in this song!!!! He is one of my all-time favorite artist!!!!
Some songs are truly timeless. This takes me back to the weekends as a kid when I would watch MTV all day because of videos like this.
More proof of how truly epic Prince was. This was one of the best Reaction videos to When Doves Cry, mainly because you reviewed the Extended Version i.e. the entire song, so you were able to give a complete review on the song & just flat out hear the whole thing. Too many only do the Official Music Video & they miss out on so much & I’m so glad that you didn’t fall for the trap and miss out.
Awesome review man! 💜💜💜
Only prince alone could sound like prince. His Voice is phanomenol ❤
This is the song that got me woken up to Prince in the 80s. It was a titanic hit and just so unique and iconic.
Prince broke barriers by leaving the bass out of this song. He recorded bass then completely cut it. He wanted to shake things up on the radio.
“Diamonds and Pearls” is a beautiful song by Prince that I believe you will love.
Best two concerts I ever attended!!💜
its a whole genre on its own as rock / funk /hip-hop and pop in it. Its layered so much and so simple on the other hand that it has all musical diverse styles in it. Voice of prince and lin drum is the bass and the chorus inside layered makes it classic and mirroring effect on classic orchestra could easily fit. Guitar rock solo and piano end shows this song tells a story with an opening and an end like no other and lyrics are deep that fits your emotions and amazes. It has a Mozart effect all over you . Its a myth one of the 10 best song of all TIME in every genre . ITS MAJESTIC and it get props for ever and more. This is a song that makes Prince a 21st century musical genius of ALL TIME.
R.I.P PRINCE 💫💜🎶music is life 🎶
Prince - what a wonderful talent. Watch him play with a group of well-known musicians, including Dhani Harrison, George Harrison's son, playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Prince just shows the world how it's done. Plus, his hat mezmerizes me every time I watch the upload.
I am glad you got the video that shows his 'jump, spin, and landing'. Most reactions songs show the short version and finishes before he jumps. That is one of my favorite dance moves he does cause it looks so effortless, but it can be dangerous in his high heels.
Yes, all the scenes are from Purple Rain. The bass comes in later- pure genius.
Prince used his music to feel the pain in his life. You hear it in so much of his lyrics. This is what makes him iconic.
💗💗💗 the way you analyzed the meaning of the song. Right on the money.
He recorded this with full instrumentation, then at the last minute stripped it down to this. The producers did not want to release it this way; said it would not sell, but Prince insisted. Yes, the video is from the movie. Just so you can taste some of his live show, this is a really great, if blurry clip from Michigan from the end of a concert. ua-cam.com/video/cVYyULHeZDc/v-deo.html
I always thought the drums provided enough bass to carry the song thru! Especially with his vocals on top of the beat
My favorite Prince song 💜💜💜💜
When doves cry is the best song ever written.period
Sign O’ The Times & Raspberry Beret 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for doing the whole reaction and appreciating the music. Dope!!!
I've just recently came across your channel and have been going through your catalogue. Love you and your wife's reactions and views on life and music. I am a huge Prince fan. Been to 9 concerts and 2 after parties in my life. I think you would really enjoy checking out some of his more religious music like: The Holy River, The Ladder, and The Cross. These are lesser known outside of Prince Fandom. Keep up the great work, and keep that family life strong.
Great reaction. Side note, Prince was a devout Jehovah Witness. Donated millions of dollars to multiple charities without any recognition and wanted it that way.
7:49 Wait until you'll listen to Prince "Head" keyboard solo...
Glad to see you might be the first person on YT to react to the full "When doves cry" video. With Prince's 80's videos (except Automatic for obvious reasons), always be sure to get the full version of the song because MTV used to cut videos longer than 3 minutes during daytime. And the result is you don't get the full song to enjoy.
I hope you'll get the full "I could never take the place of your man" video because the shortened one lacks a sublime jazz/blues guitar solo.
I was never a big Prince fan but this song made me fall in love with it! So good!
He also wrote and produced his own music !! He’s so talented !! And he’s hot in high heels !! It’s crazy !! Back then it was Prince and the Revolution.. (his band)
His music catalog is crazy!! Love your reactions... you can never go wrong with anything prince, ... find the tribute (made with other guitarists) my guitar gently weeps...
This will always be the #1 Prince song for me. He is forever unequalled.
Awww, baby girl is adorable. She looks like both you and your wife.
Not enough words to complement his TALENTS. His live versions are as good if not better than his album versions. #PrinceIsMusic he really is the greatest artist of ALL time.
Prince!!! You must watch the Movie!
6:54 Everything. Most performers and those of us who love music can agree he was a genius.
🤘💜🤘 Still can't believe he's gone. Sweet reaction.
....a friend of mine told me about the song....and said it reminded him of...me....then i heard the song....and i CRIED....love the song...video...and HIM....
Prince's outfits would look ridiculous on 99.99999% of everyone who has ever lived. But he wears it like inherited wealth. When it comes to charisma in the music industry, there is Prince, Freddie Mercury and everyone else
the bass line was originally there....but he put it in Exotic City
Wow, lol you rarely see someone realize there’s no bass. It’s noted as one of the only major pop songs to have no bass. It originally did but prince felt it was more powerful without it. The kick is quite bassy and his voice is lower generally in this song. It covers a lot.
Try Princes song & video" Kiss" ..There's no base in it...Really ole style jazz/blue a little James Brown in there.
The "Kiss" official music video is a good place to check out some more of his dance moves as well.
Check out the rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps in the tribute to George Harrison concert. Prince’s guitar solo will blow you away.
This song was used in the movie but this video is not specific from the movie. NO BASS first top song pop with out bass. He was a genius
When I saw him in concert , he took a bath.
Video created and yes, clips from Purple Rain are used. Prince's vocal range was as impressive as his ability to play 20+ instruments.
I saw Prince Live in 1985 in Long Beach CA during his Purple Rain Tour. I fell in love with him that night and still LOVE him to this day.
RIP 🕊 PRINCE 💜💜
The first song I ever danced to with my children’s father! This song was brand new!
He’s my ex now not because of Prince!!❤️
The bass is the drums. There was originally a Bass but it he took it out.
Also I’m from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s cold as shii there. -30 arctic freezing weather
Yes, many of the clips are from the movie 'Purple Rain'. Prince was a genius & I miss him. For a 'naughty' Prince tune, check out 'Darling NIkki'. LOL What's wild to me is that his sexy demeanor drew women like crazy & he is super tiny. Like 5'2" tall 112 lbs. tiny. I guess my grandma was right when she said... 'a lot of powder' comes in a little keg. (As in gun powder) LOL
Prince was everything 💜
Essential Prince!
Billy Gibbons once commented he couldn't figure out how Prince played the into to this song. Prince's choreography is legendary, but caused physical problems requiring surgery and sadly contributed to medication reliance.
Try learning that dance step move. IT WILL NEVER LEAVE YOUR HEAD!!! It’s like when you get a song stuck in your head… EVERY TIME I hear this song my brain goes right to the part of the video with that dance step. Lol.
Doves symbolizes Peace, so if its crying it's must be what war and chaos sounds like, a dove crying.
great comment
Prince and the Revolution!!! Nothing else to say.....
I know us older folks remember back in the day when the incorrect answer to “Who’s cooler, Prince or Michael Jackson?” could even start a fight between second grade kids. I ALWAYS went with Prince.
Yes, this is from Purple Rain!
thanks, Sebs.. such a unique song, and magnetic performance... appreciate your reaction...
The song 'Purple Rain', the version from the movie 'Purple Rain', is absolutely fantastic. The whole movie is full of great music. My ex-husband took me to see it for our first date.
I sure got some looks when I loaded up the jukebox on country and 'Purple Rain', at the Waffle House, lol. 🙃🙃
LOVED Prince so much! But some other amazing bands back then was INXS.......AND...EUROPE.... Maybe you should check them out. You will love them too.
Recorded the whole song on his own. Every instrument
Chillzzz. Every. Single. Time. ❤
Thank you for showing everyone the Album version
Correct... the genius of NO BASS on this track
The best way to learn about Prince is watch the movie Purple Rain. I bought this album on the day it was released!
This is on the soundtrack to his movie Purple Rain. Watch the movie.
Prince played ALL the instruments on the track. The band played it live and in the video
He also did all the vocals on the track too
Prince surpasses MJ !?
you broke down the meaning of this perfectly. well said. and yes no bass. It was first included and then taken out on purpose. and yet this song is still so funky. Hard to make a song funky with no bass.
You’ve got to listen to the studio version that has a bad ass guitar solo by Prince at the end. This is from the movie “ Purple Rain”. Yes there is no bass guitar.
Sooo glad you're digging into Prince
I love Prince! He's the only man I am not envy about when he's running around in women clothes and look better in it then any woman 😁he had his own unique style to everything and was an amazing singer😍😍
You need to listen to Prince Live version of the song "Shhhh"
I got goosebumps watching you watch this.
In fact i start seeing Prince as a modern Homer type of artist you know that guy introduced poet into EPIC in Greek we call it ΕΠΟΣ (Homer wrote Odyssey and Iliada and was actually the first rapper usin a stick to the beat of his poets in ancient Greece) Prince does not know this, but i am not sure cause he loved studying. The connection is obvious. The right word is tragedy for doves crying
While finalizing the edit of the film, and the mastering of the album the director informed, Prince that there was a montage sequence that required a song. He and the Revolution had been rehearsing and jamming most of the day. Matt Fink had been doing this faux classical riff on the synths that Prince liked. He dismissed everyone but Fink who then layed down the basic synth riff. Matt went home and the next day at rehearsal Prince had written and recoeded When Doves Cry. He took out the bassline because he didn't like it. And couldn't get the song to sound right with. It was the last song recorded for the album, its first single and his first #1.
At the end, that’s a Wendy Melvin solo, not a prince solo. He may have taught her what he wanted to hear, but she did the work.
Atta boy. Love that !
