    One episode I feel could have been top 10 or at least an honorable mention was "The Enemy Within", where Captain Kirk gets "split" into two forms of himself due to a transporter malfunction, a "good" Kirk and a "bad" Kirk. That episode was one of my favorites. Great list, I agree with pretty much every episode on this one!

      Yes. Joan Collins totally rocked the role of Edith Keeler. You can see how she went on to bigger successes later in her career. She really made you feel that Kirk and Edith had made a soul-deep connection, which is impressive, given Captain Kirk's interstellar horn-dog reputation. The episode would have been much less moving had a less competent actress been handed the role.

      One thing---I caught a discrepancy near the end of the episode. It would seem that Edith Keeler brought her demise on herself, when after Kirk told her to stay put she wandered out into the traffic, not watching where she was going.+ No wonder she got hit by the truck!

    I’m not a fan of these newer Star Trek movies or TV episodes. For me, the original TV series was indeed magic. Like a Gene Roddenberry painted masterpiece. What made it so special was not just Roddenberry but all those people that contributed their time and energies into making it what is was on NBC in 1966. Many people have tried but YOU CANT DUPLICATE THE ORIGINAL! 👍🏻😃

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 2 роки тому +1

      Roddenberry gets a little too much credit, as Gene Coon had more to do with what made Star Trek work, as well as writers like D.C. Fontana.
      Roddenberry even infamously said, when TNG began production, that he had no desire to treat TOS as absolute canon. Is it any wonder that the very first TNG episode retcons away a sizable chunk of TOS' established pre-Federation history, and even the source of Khan's backstory.

    • @dionysus2006
      @dionysus2006 2 роки тому +6

      TOS was more believable and gave more of a sense of what interstellar exploration might be like and had better stories and acting (even though the Gorn was a guy in a rubber lizard suit). The others score mostly on special effects. Captain Janeway is my second favorite captain though.

What a cheap, but utterly convincing ploy, to create another life form. The only complaint I can think of, was the dubbing of the adult voice. Although it matched the kid's lips movements perfectly, it sounded like it was as coming from another room. (I know... critics, critics!) Still, I agree it was one of Trek's best episodes.

      Gene Roddenberry deserves the lion's share of the credit for launching Trek, promoting it, writing it, and keeping it flying, but it was a work of one heck of a lot of very talented and creative people, not the least some great science fiction writing talent. I’ve watched the original Star Trek repeatedly since their original airing. Back in the sixties most people had B&W televisions. I vividly remember some of my classmates wanting to know what color the laser beams were. Star Trek introduced various devices and concepts of space travel and communications that were very intriguing. I do believe that if it were not for Star Trek we would not have cell phones, personal computers, tablets, and other devices commonly in use today. I hope that one day there will be an actual USS Enterprise NC-1701 and the realization of Warp drive allowing for actual real time exploration of distant stars and planets.. Ahead Warp Eight.🌏

      Okay, guys, I don't want to downplay the influence of Star Trek, but to say they'd be no cell phones, tablets, and so forth, is giving the show a little bit too much credit. The producers of Trek, like the producers of the cartoon Johnny Quest before them, used to read the magazines "Popular Science" and "Popular Mechanics" to come up with ideas for their two show's technology. They may have brought that technology to the attention of wider audiences, but readers of both those magazines in the 1960s were aware of futuristic technologies that eventually evolved into things we have today. Just saying...

    'Mirror, Mirror' is one of my favorites. Nichelle Nichols was insanely buff for a actress of the time. Those abs would get rave reviews even today. 'The Trouble with Tribbles' was unique in its concept. 'Journey to Babel' puts forward the idea that politics never change. 'Balance of Terror' is a thinly disguised modernization of the WWII destroyer vs submarine movie 'The Enemy Below'. Amazingly, the show almost always had top-notch writing.

      Well, it was just a knock off of the Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde story. I'm not one of those, but I've heard both episodes described that way by the so called experts. My big question about The Enemy Within is why they just didn't use the shuttlecraft to rescue Sulu and the landing party after the transporter was deemed too dangerous to use!

      Unfortunately... I feel that leading toward Wrath of Khan is the worst thing about the episode, and its not even that episode's fault. While, when written, it was never intended to be revisited, as Spock's line "to return to that world in a hundred years..." would put it well beyond the life span of the characters.
      But at the same time, it was implying that something would grow from "the seed you planted today", hence the episode name - Space Seed
      But instead, what we got was a fairly simplistic revenge plot. Pointless revenge too, as Kirk had given Khan everything he always wanted - "A world to win, an empire to build" but instead of seeing an empire... we get an absolutely nonsensical explanation for ruining the world, an even more nonsensical way of finding it again, and one of the most infamous canon flubs of all time "I never forget a face, Mister... Checkov"
      Wrath of Khan was clearly made to appeal more to the general audience, when Paramount felt The Motion Picture was too cerebral (boy, where has Star Trek heard THAT before), and lets be perfectly honest with ourselves here... we only watch that movie time and time again for the space battle. Is it any wonder Paramount thinks revenge plots and space battles are what we want most? Perhaps if Voyage Home got the love and respect it deserves, we'd get less pew-pew and more fun adventure with relevant social commentary.... you know, like TOS was best known for.

      Story and character is why I put Deep Space Nine at the top of my list,... and why Voyager frustrated me so much. DS9 had shown that you could have characters that change, grow, and evolve over the seven years, only for Voyager to become locked behind a stricter episodic format than TNG. The individual Voyager episodes were good (well... most of them anyway), but the series at large just feels like such a missed opportunity and a victim of the old ways of thinking.

    There was an episode where space commander Domingas wanted to know what the “ hold up” was, and Kirk says something like........ “ Tell Jose he’ll get his chili peppers, prime Mexican reds, I picked them myself “ ...... I thought that was a GOOD story line, one that has stuck with me over the years and of one of many that made Star Trek what it was. You don’t see that type of dialogue in the new shows, in fact, the newer shows don’t resemble the original in a lot of ways. I think it was not only the dialogue but many other factors ( lighting, character expressions, camera angles and of course the background atmospheric humming) that sets the original series apart from the newer shows. THATS WHAT MADE THE ORIGINAL NBC SERIES GREAT and why so many other shows tried to imitate it.

      +Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) It was essential, but it wasn't one of the best in the series. My personal favourites is _Conscience of the King_, _Arena_, _The Trouble with Tribbles_, _The Corbomite Maneuver_, _Mirror, Mirror_, _Amok Time_, _Journey to Babel_ and _The Enemy Within_. _Arena_ is what introduced me to _Star Trek_ and what got me interested.

      The Cage as it was first produced was never aired as part of the original series. Instead it was later re-edited into the only two-part Star Trek episode called The Menagerie. It was a discarded, unaired pilot and didn't show up until they showed it for the first time as part of some big anniversary special many years after Star Trek had been off the air. I like both.

    • @betaneptune
      @betaneptune 7 років тому +4

      The best things about "The Cage" are its total lack of lulls (there's always something interesting happening!), the elaborate sets, and Susan Oliver. Looks like they spent more money on this episode than on the entire third season! In the top ten? Maybe. Has its share of problems. And it wasn't an aired episode on its own, so some might disqualify it for that.

    The Doomsday Machine is my favorite Classic Star Trek episode. Glad it made the list, but it really should've taken the #1 slot. Its the original series' "Best of Both Worlds". Loved the scene where Capt. Kirk invoked his Executive Privelege as Captain of the Enterprise to have Mr. Spock assume command of the Enterprise over Commodore Decker.
    Arena showed Capt. Kirk act ala MacGyver when he improvised that cannon to defeat the Gorn.
    Agree with all the episodes that made this list.

      I've often thought about the differences between a top ten list of best episodes, as opposed to a list of favorite episodes. Sometimes a really bad episode can show up on someone's favorites list.
      "And The Children Shall Lead" is genuinely regarded as one of Star Trek's worst episodes, yet it's one of my personal favorites. I especially like Kirk's nervous breakdown in the lift with Spock.
      Another cruddy episode was the hippies in space show, but it had a brief, yet fascinating back story, about Pavel Chekov.
      The ending to The Squire Of Gothos is what made that entire story worthwhile, something that is often lost on people who absolutely hate that episode.
      Do you think there's a substantial difference between best and favorite?

They were supposed to be these heavy duty sex goddesses, and had the men of the crew falling all over themselves because of them, but truth be known, I thought there were numerous female crewmen on the Enterprise who were far better looking and sexier. If they were going to make that sort of a statement, they should have found women to play the roles who really fit the bill. Anyway, that's my opinion on the subject!
