If you weren't so clearly joking, I would have a lot of respect for that comment. I'd be thinking, now there's a guy that doesn't cheat, fix his lies, shave strokes, and is an optimist to boot! Someone you want to hire
Great advice Matt. A bit late for me as I broke 100 for the first time 3 days ago!! Still really useful tips though. The most important thing for me was to relax and enjoy it, and I didn't check my score until I had finished. I even got my first ever birdie and won nearest the pin (which I still ended up 3 putting 🤦♂️). Still buzzing now ⛳💥💪.
Good work mate. This is where the greatest and most frustrating part of golf comes in…. now you got to beat that score, the 90, 80, even par, break even, 70…… the addiction is real….ly frustrating 😂
I can relate to that big time. I scored a 99 recently thanks to the best back nine of my life a +9. After a horrendous stretch of holes 5 through 9 I just said to myself 'f**k it, relax and try to enjoy it' and it all clicked. I'm still buzzing. Well done 👍
When I played off a 20+ handicap I used to automatically regarded each hole as being one over the shown par, namely a 3 was a 4, 4 a 5 etc. This meant I was not chasing an unrealistic par, especially on long Par 4's but one than was achievable which helped a lot psychologically. Instead of a 5 being a bogey on a par 4 it was a par, a four then became a birdie all of which gave me a positive feedback. I'm now off 14 but still regard any par 4 over 400 yards as a par 5 to retain that positive outlook. Incidentally my experience is that your slice or hook disappears when you play for it and your shot goes as straight as an arrow away from the fairway you want to hit.
@@CB-rv2lj -Thanks for the encouragement. Since I just started playing last year, I know I can get into the 80s this year! I really didn’t know much at all, but after a few private lessons and months of UA-cam lessons, my knowledge of the sport has grown.
I only started playing last June at the age of 55 and was scoring 120+. After watching your videos and trying to put into practice the advice you gave I am now shooting in the 90s regularly. Thinking about shots more and not trying to hit Hero shots, taking the easy option when in trouble have all helped. Thanks for the advice.
Awesome video. I’m breaking 90 consistently now due to the tips you’ve pointed out on this video. When I first started playing I was focussing too much on technical aspects like ball striking and forgot to actually learn how to *play* golf. Chipping diagonally out of trouble, bump and run shots, and playing to my shot shape has meant that I went from a late 20s handicapper to a 15 handicapper. Knowing when to go for it and not and remembering I’m not a PGA pro (or Seve) got my scores down. Damage limitation alone knocked 4-5 shots per round off! Cheers Matt.
Thanks for this Matt - my first time back on the golf course on Friday for 5 years and wanting to pick up golf more seriously so breaking 100 is definitely a big target. Fingers crossed!! 🤞
Very good advice. I appreciate that you have stayed true to your roots in that you still release extremely relevant and helpful instructional videos. I enjoy the tips as well as your matches with friends. Thanks for the great content Matt!
Thanks for posting this video! I was playing low 90's but over 100 for the last month. Really gained something from you. The 'panic thinking' describes me to a tee (apologies for the pun). Really super advice☘️
Hi Matt, absolutely loved this video. I was always panicking and overthinking my off fairway shots! I will take all this advice to my next game and play more relaxed!
The psychological point about thing about the shot in hand really helped, Matt, thank you. I have already broken 100. I normally get 99 on a par 71 or 96 on a par 68 course. I am usually a couple of shots worse or a couple of shots better off. I am trying to take 8 strokes of of my round to get to 20 handicap this year. But I always put pressure on my self with the expectation. Thanks for this, Matt. I will just take each shot as it comes.
It’s wonderful to listen and watch where the advice given relates to average golfers who don’t have swing speeds of 100mph. Very much enjoyed all your videos and they cater for my ability
Took up golf again in August after 26 years Aim was break 100. Joined my local course this year, shot 104 on my first round, 97 on my second. Out in 56, back in 41! Next few rounds 96, 93, 95 and 91. Some lessons with a PGA pro help massively
I'm firmly in the trying to break 100 and I know it will happen soon - great advice Matt - I'm definitely using course management on my very challenging home course - and for me my short game is where the points are to be made. I'm getting there and love your advice!
This is some great advice. I keep trying to talk myself out of pulling driver on the first hole at my course, as it almost always ends up OB and costing me that first hole every time
Great advice. I started breaking the ton last year, but am now back around 103-108. Couple of swing faults after an injury, but also trying the seve-esque too often
Here you are talking about breaking 100 and I'm just trying to break 120. Note: I've only played 6 games so far but appreciate the advice you are giving.
Super tips! I usually break 100 (working now on getting under 90), but yesterday “the wheels fell off” as you say. Had a bad round and saw several of the mistakes I made highlighted in your video. Will take this info back to course and improve. I’m curious, what do you think of TM’s new Stripe ball?
I've only been playing 6 months, but it's the duffed shots that are wrecking my scorecard. Some really useful comments on here, but in the main I think I really need to relax more.
Good advice. Would say that if not 7/10 shots with your driver are predictable, use an iron. Get that iron that you can shoot 150-170 yards with and play that.
Really enjoyed this Matt. Cracked 100 twice in the last six weeks after starting the game six months ago but have fallen back a little. Needed these common sense reminders. (The trouble with common sense is it isn’t that common!).
As someone that has just started to consistently break 100 I would add a couple of things. Don't carry clubs in your bad that you can't hit. For me that was my 60 degree wedge, and my 4 iron. I rarely hit great shots with those clubs so I removed them so that I wouldn't even be tempted to use them. Secondly, carry 3 wedges, and know your distances. Like it was mentioned in the video, you're likely going to hit your 3rd shot from 100 in (or hitting 3 to get on the green if you miss). So know your yardages, and put in 2x the practice with your wedges that you do with other clubs.
Great video as always, Matt! Just a little heads up, but the audio in your videos is a little screwy sometimes. It jumps up and down volume wise and the overall volume seems rather low compared to other videos. I'm sure you've noticed but the volume on commercials scares the crap out of me, Matt! Please don't take this the wrong way as it's well worth it for such incredible advice! Cheers, Mr. Fryer!
I’ve started golfing two years ago and I’m chasing breaking 80 now. However I still have some days where I struggle to break 100. Most my friends stop keeping their score with accuracy if they don’t shoot very well. Golf is hard.
Good advice Matt but I’m surprised you didn’t advise people to putt that ball from just off the green on the short grass. A bad putt is still going to be better than a duffed chip shot which people attempting to break 100 are bound to play because they see the low handicappers playing that shot. 👍🏻🇦🇺
First time I ever broke 100, my driver was so bad that after 3 holes I put it away and started teeing off with my hybrid and irons. Accuracy much more important than distance would be my biggest tip.
The first thing you need to do to break 100 is accept that you're rubbish. Sorry if that offends you but it's true. Then you have to go back to the very basics. Putts inside 5ft and pace control on long putts. You need some sort of reliable pitch shot. You're not going to hit many greens, if any, so practice those nice easy pitch shots. Forget about spin and all that nonsense, you just want to get them on to green. Anywhere on the green will do! The last thing you need to break 100 is a club that you can hit reliably that goes reasonably straight and reasonably far. You have to keep the ball in play, if you slice your driver 50 yards right then leave it in the car and only use it on the range until you can control it. It doesn't matter if it goes 140 yards but it has to stay in play. I know it sounds boring and it might not be how you want to play but until you have these basic skills down you're only going to get frustrated with the game. Golf sidekick did a series on breaking 100 and other than crossfield no one has done a breaking 100 video that comes close to it. I'm no real fan of gs but I went from shooting 110's and 120's to the mid 90's and the longest club i hit was 150 yard 7 wood.
Play the safest / smartest shots possible and keep it tidy within 100 yards! Play to limit damage and accept that crap shots will happen and so what. Nothing is more normal. Just laugh and learn. Remember to always have fun above all, no stress! Oh, and just a few beers helps with the nerves :)
My late father in law (HCP 3 in his day) told me once you’re going to play bad shots. Take your medicine don’t compound it by playing two bad shots in a row. That helped me break 90! Never try the Tiger shots.
Think positive... don't think "I don't want to go into that bunker", instead think " I'm landing my ball there" at a place in the middle of the fairway
"if you try to break 100 your level of consistency is not going to be very high"... Well, I'm breaking 80 "often", and I can't say I'm consistent at all!!! I'm not sure why we even talk about consistency in golf, apart maybe from tour players that's more a dream than anything!
Basically the more you play the better you get. Effort & hard work. You don’t need lessons and you don’t need these UA-cam clowns. Tiger said so himself. Best balls. Short game
@@stogieman1270 No, im not saying that. But lets say for example youve been playong for a few years and cant break one hundred, i mean thats the equivalent of hitting the corner flag when taking a penalty. And no, im glad im not a Golf Professional, i couldnt afford the wage cut.
