Jeff Ellis is a grammy award winning mix engineer who has worked with artists like frank ocean, doja cat, joji, Paul McCartney. Kali Uchis among others. In todays video I take a look at the pro mixing tips trick and techniques pro mixer jeff ellis uses to craft mixes for these artists. I also take a look jeff ellis's legendary studio inside the famous east west studios. In 2009 jeff moved to east west as an intern and eventually landed a gig as Frank Oceans Engineer working on projects like Channel Orange and Blond. Today he mixes todays top records like Doja Cats Planet Her and Joji Glimpse of Us. - Фільми й анімація
If this video gets 2k likes I will take a shot out of a Grammy‼️
Let’s gooooo! people let’s make this happen. Ill pay for your plane ticket back to LA!!! (economy class)
U shld take a shot no matter what (even tho I'm pretty sure the vod got 2k likes lol) but u shld cause this video is good! This the stuff people can really learn from!
All the shortcuts and top 10 plugz VIDz in the world will never match up vs good mix theory and adapting to a systematic, but flexible approach like this!
I love how he sets up on the cpu then gets off the cpu. I used to work a neve board that I did a similar thing on, that's actually the 1st mix system I learned, start off by tracking to and mixing in the box/hybrid to rough it in using the faders on the right side of the board. Then bus everything over to the left and no Mas screen. Sometimes I liked to go back to pro tools again after the blind side mix, I was new to mixing then so I liked to see how much things changed and to do some serial comp on the master the lazy way lol!
But yeah everywhere I've worked (especially mixing) has used a similar system, but never see people talk much about that...
Def gonna be watching more videos like this tho! I been in the audio world a long time but still love to learn and see new ways or systems like this!
IT HIT 2k you better fly out to LA right now and take this shot.
@@JeffEllisWorldwide Hold him to it, Jeff!!!!
As an artist I HAAAATE when mixing engineers change the song's vibe. I worked with an engineer once who kept adding a radio effect to my vocals and completely changed the vibe of the songs so I started working with another amazing engineer who respects my creative decisions
Yeooo same , I went to a studio and said I wanted a pop and sort of aggressive sound mix and he said "it was giving lofi" so he just made it as such rather than keeping some of the harshness I wanted.
What's worse is that he said he couldn't send me my individual vocal tracks after smh
Hearing "You can unscrew the screws on the subtractor?" when he used reason is unironically the funniest shit ive ever heard
this is so cool you managed to get this interview. jeff seems really fucking cool, thats the type of engineer id want to be like and be more than happy to send my songs
He didn’t manage nothing. I walked up to him at NAMM and demanded it. Because I am a huge George T music fan. I love his passion for the game and he is the only UA-camr that could ever hope to capture my essence
@@JeffEllisWorldwide hell yeah that's so awesome 😄 I'm glad you did this was a very motivating video
BRO KNOWS 7 DAWS
Thanos but with DAWs.
Once you learn a second daw you realize that they all kinda work the same, I mean depends on what you wanna do, for beat making I’d go FL, no question, but for anything else you really just hit record and put things on channels, then add plugins, buses and mix it, only the UI changes
I can use 8
@@egorrujin5296try adding ableton as your beat making daw too
@@frankgrimes7388That is a crazy statement
lol I wasn’t expecting a horror trailer for a plate reverb but it was awesome
This is the guy that got me interested in mixing! After hearing channel orange then watching him talk at a seminar about mixing with emotion rather than critically really opened up a new door for me. Great vid as always 👏
'you can unscrew the screws' cracked me up
The way he talks sounds so, emotional, he must be very good at getting those emotions out of the mixes. He must be very passionate.
These videos are invaluable. Thanks so much for continuing to provide these
I just love Jeff’s whole philosophy on mixing
This was amazing. Thanks as always George!
George man props to you for getting this level of audio engineer inside scoop, Geoff seems like an awesome guy. Keep the top tier content coming!
i love his philosophy going into 4 years of recording and mixing full-time, I have adopted the less is more approach. Even when I record the song I respect the rough mix. It's also great to see him working on budget monitors. I have a pair of Kali Lp 6s that I work on in the studio and I'm getting another pair for my home rig.
Had the pleasure of meeting and having a few songs mixed by Mr. Ellis and I can easily say such a genuine and kind heart glad to see him on this channel.
george i have seen your videos since the start and i also been keeping up with Jeff since he's nominated and known for those emotional hit songs like jojis, doja cat , etc.....im just glad you were able to go into his studio and give us a little from your perspective . Jeff Ellies is really skilled and discipline. keep up the good videos!
Fascinating! Thanks, George, this is incredible.
This was really good, enjoyed it and learnt a lot as well.
Thank you for this great content !! Jeff Ellis's approach to mixing and music is inspiring
the analogy of mixing being "remodeling" is amazing
Thanks for taking the time 2 do this much love
Amazing insight as always George! Thank you for doing the work!
Thanks!
That was EXCELLENT. Thank you!
Thank you for such informative content
Man, Jeff is so real and down to earth

love this thank you!
THIS IS THE GREATEST CHANNEL ON UA-cam PERIOD
This is amazing. Thank you George T
Well done mate!
I love this video. It reassured me that I'm going about things the right way.
Love this video bro
Sweet video! Thanks!
gold as always
love you Jeff!!!
This is an incredible interview!
Thanks!
this is great! thank you
Love this video! 😮
pretty cool to ear about the vocal eq part.
Great video!!
Im loving this!
great video as usual! would be great to have a little more info about the dolby mixing process of Jeff Ellis (or maybe an other engineer?) with Logic
"Respect the Rough" - Jeff Ellis / "Fuck your Rough" - Jaycen Joshua
I’ve heard Jaycen say that and I totally agree with him on that. Sometimes you gotta do that too. Simply just not enough time in one video to to talk about everything. If the rough don’t got magic fuck it up if the rough is magic respect it. If the song sucks don’t mix it.
I got to listen to Elton John's 'Rocket Man' in that Atmos room, and it was beyond anything I expected. Very cool interview, I love Jeff's mentality on mixing.
ur content is the best
this the one i’ve been waiting for
Yo bro
Fix the kerning on the mixingparis in your header bro it'll look way better
@@FatherWave thanks for that bro. i’ve been wanting to know what i should change to make my channel layout better
Lots of gems of knowledge
so eye opening. the point he made about the use of eq on vocals is going to stick with me forever. always be overthinking it.
Understanding all DAWs is super smart. It's really all about your plugins anyways. Anything can record a wave file, even your phone
Great video man! I met Jeff at NAMM this year in the Kali Audio room, it was the end of the last day and he just walked in when I was testing out the Kali Atmos setup alone. It was a really cool experience. The way he talks about his Kali monitors basically made me commit to getting a pair, maybe I’ll even do Atmos with them. Their new sub is a smaller dual driver sub and it can really bring some heat, better than bigger single driver subs imo.
My kali atmos setup been amazing
well when you have this studio it is pretty easy to be immersed in the process
Love yo vids
Great approach and great workflow! Also agree w him about the DAW selloutz being a thing of the past, so many out there that are stuck in pro tools or one DAW, I used to be a ProTools 4 life guy till around 2018.1 when me and avid went head to head lol now a dayz im mostly in logic but thru the years ive learned almost all the DAWs except abelton...been on FL since the fruity loops days but still never been my fav, great for producing but mixing in FL is a pain!
This is great right here thanks for posting for too long has bad advise on UA-cam eroded the creative space creatives have to hear this and get back to what matters CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE 💯💯💯💯
Fire video!! 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
love this
Dope vid
I can attest to the fact that the Kali Audio IN-5s are an absolute steal. Great monitors
this is gold
wow this was awesome
I love all the posters on the wall. Oh and yeah the advice he was giving was pretty damn great... I guess 😁😁

JEFF ELLIS WORLD WIDE
Jeff graduated from CRAS!!
GEORGE T GOATED
I like two two stations approach, one is analog and the other is digital.
The guy has zero BS in gear obsession and his philosophy makes so much
KATE NASH CAMEO TYES!!!
super awesome
Bros the goat💀
Try get a interview with Nathan Philips and see if you can get him to open up some of those Omar Apollo sessions ‼️‼️
this guy is so cool
I’ve used Protools, Cubase, Reason, Logic, Bitwig , Abelton.
The iMovie trailer 😭😂
Very insightful video..that being said, I'm EXTREMELY shocked that he didnt know what a Manley Voxbox was. Lol
I've been seeing it for years but theres a difference between knowing a thing and knoooooowing a thing, u know ?
awesome video, his process is kinda funny though, it requires that you have access to literally every plugin lol
You build it up over the years and have people freeze tracks if they using weird stuff. It’s not that hard. Everyone uses the same stuff. What’s more hard is having it all on 4 different rigs. But we ain’t tryna be average so…
Bro just has like a $50k Fairchild just sitting there wth
Welcome to east west
8:53 pacifically
7 DAWS 😂 goddamn thanos omg are those artist on Pokémon cards LOL I love that
If you get this guy for an hour on a straight tutorial we would get so many nuggets of gold. Please🙏🙏🙏🙄
Jeff is actually a goat, his work on scaring the hoes dlc was incredible
kali audio 7.1.0 set up? that's dope

@@JeffEllisWorldwide Salute! just ordered a pair of in 8s
Ah shit I only know 4 DAWs and 2 Groove boxes. I gotta step my game up 😅
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s cool that he likes the kali’s, bro has $100k pmcs but works mostly on the kali’s
the binaural render.. damn.. flames..
