I like what he's saying. Sometimes mixers try to serve technicalities of a good mix instead of the emotion of the song.
Sometimes an imperfect mix will be perfect for a song.

Real one!✊🏽
Yaaaasss
God bless people like like you sir
thank you so much
Having the artist and producer around during the mix is great. Especially when you're all three.
This is Golden. I feel this 100%
I do all three
@@spcsld Me too:)
But then you just have one perspective, and might focus too much on a single thing, like "oh the kick sounds too loud".... might not be good at the art trying to di everything at once
Yeah no that never fucking happens.
You do realize that Jeff Ellis threw a tantrum irl when someone said Frank is a good mixer, said he "does everything anyways", someone recorded it, posted in on r/frankocean and then they've never worked together ever again?
You guys need to grow up.
me, a guitar player, watching this:
35:20 -- 'when you're setting the volume of a guitar wail you just wanna keep making it louder'
ok ok ok this man is a visionary
Wow, so many other mixing classes are technical and --- Jeff Ellis really shows the ART side of mixing.
It’s nice to see Jesse Rutherford get the props he deserves here
One of the best lectures ive seen, love how he thinks
His energy and attitude relative to other engineers i have studied truly sets him apart. Amazing perspective and inspiration packaged in this video.
these are some of the most informative videos you will find anywhere online.
A very confident audio engineer.
Much of what he said resonates with me as i kinda have the same approach. His "glory moments" terminology makes total sense. Also i always felt mixing is an artistic process first and foremost, so it makes sense to go through this process with both the artist/producer and the mixing engineer in the same room unless the artist really wants to be surprised and trusts the engineers artistic tastes.
Very interesting. I found this as helpful as the Bob Power one from a while back.
Fantastic video. I loved Jeff's ability to pull away from the technical and focus on the overall emotion.. something I need to remind myself to do more!
Dream come true to get to listen to him breakdown this song in particular. Thank you!
A very nice lecture coming at the right moment...
This is so freaking cool to see thank you for recording and uploading this for us to access!
this was the class i NEEDED to hear right now. Thanks man, it was awesome!
Priceless. Full Circle. Thank you for sharing. SonicScoop and Jeff, Thank you
One of the few lectures I've seen where I've been able to clearly HEAR the consequence of each change made to the mix!
I love the minimalist approach and going for the feel rather than by the specs or numbers.
JEFF ELLIS WORLDWIDE 🌎
Damn. When he compressed that string arrangement I was shook.
I consider this channel the final word on engineering. Such good content, every video!
learned a lot on this very inspiring
Nice.... really great I would have been there. But that's a challenge from where I live... thank you Justin and Jeff.
What a nice dude. And really cool info, too. Thanks!
This was good one, great song, great presentation and very useful.
damn this was a very much needed watch, ive been trying to be so technical that I forgot to feel. So glad this was free Thank you SonicScoop :)
what a likable guy. damn
game changing!
Thanks sonicscoop😘🙏😍💘❤️
Thank you
Great vid - loved seeing Jeff's process
amazing video!!
he is very humble and nice guy
Great guy great attitude! Cheers :-)
This man is a brilliant thinker
Fab fab video. Very refreshing attitude to mixing. Reminds of the approach fo the Kush guy on YT.
I like his style
I don't always agree with his choices, but absolutely respect he's bold enough to make them and lean into them. makes for truly unique mixes
amazing
Thanks for sharing. Such a great mix. Shows how a really good mix can change a good song to a very good one.
Can't understand why the artist wants the autotune character though.
15:02, I think a good way here would be just honest and say this is music I'm not familiar with and would not do a good job. Always be transparent in your communication and explain why you think you can't take the commission and pass it on.
55:00, some well known mixing engineers would do this and say “what a huge difference” and no one else literally can't hear a thing.
Seems like a real cool cat with an interesting perspective. Hell yeah. Also, this song is pretty dope.
Sweeeet song!
@54:57 "Jeff you didn't need to do that you're kind of like deluding yourself" while his mouse is over a bus entitled "orgey"
there's very good advice in there. I think he goes a little bit too far with the ambience-stuff and reverbs, but you can't deny he has the right ideas. I guess if you use this stuff a lot, you get numb to it and use it even more.
YOU GO TOO FAR BITCH
Very charismatic man. Top aesthetics and presentation skills.
...you just have to make it louder until you just wanna play air guitar
good one =)
anybody else press "command + =" when PT was full screen. it's like i'm not even controlling my own body
Yes, hahaha
I keep trying to click on plugins
I could click like a thousand times more.
59:41 lol this cut is so funny haha
Artist:
Jesse Rutherford - "Drama"
💘
the vocals in the intro sound like they sampled Seal's voice from one of his first two records haha.
He is very good at what he does
dylan brady!!
bota legenda
Thank you, lady in hat :D
Anyone know how to do the "pull up my strings" effect at 17:48 ?
That's a simple reversed reverb swell. Print a reverb of the first syllable and reverse it
😀😀😀😀
they delay on the guitar WAS panning at 33:40
11:02 29:55
Puh!
What song is that
what's the song I n the intro
PLSS LYRICS
Dylan Brady from 100 GECS!!!!!!
What is this app they edit on the vocals
He's using Pro Tools for this mix.
what did the lady in the hat do?
This guy floating 😂 no wonder frank wanted to work wit him . Now I kno why franks so secretive about his work process
9:39 "Gamers; Yeah' -random dude
Gamechanging.
I wish if he could explain the effect that he did with his vocals I LOVE !!! 7:14 min please if someone can help me
Hamid Haloui reverse reverb of the vocal and maybe some flutter effect, can be found in waves j37 for example
RenderArtsVFX thank youuu 👍🏼
Who’s here from neeks live
realizing that Dylan Brady from 100 FUCKING GECS produced THIS is crazy
Frank Ocean
I,ll just put this here and screenshot to check out later. Just a techno guy who kinda mixes rock right now..i need all the info i can get.
Btw cheers!
@@RTCLR123 boomer moment!!
Jeff "it's like" E.
Great talk. But it's difficult listening to such a warbly tuned vocal.
deesteenguish
Robot clap 10:33
Where can I download it??
Excellent presentation. Hated the boink of that fake spring reverb all the way through the bloody song.
damn, the host never said Kali Uchis...
"Thats a dope shirt.." Click! Off.
Gay engineers bring so much needed emotional thinking to the mixing process. luv it.
Introducer was a bit cringey with his requests for applause beforehand and then not even shake hands with Jeff when he got on stage.
His mic situation is a little awkward. Organizers fell down on this one.
too much reverb
I make it a point now not to watch mixing videos that only show mixing in Pro Tools. Like come on, is Pro Tools the only DAW to mix in? This is not the 90's. To me it seems like it's Avid Pro Tools promotions. Professional is making money with your craft. Being professional doesn't mean mixing in Pro Tools only.
The concepts showed here apply to every daw not only pro tools you can do the same in ableton and it will work just fine.
@@highflyerfan I know and I understand that, but it would be nice to see these tutorials in other DAWS as well. Because some people are under the misconception that mixing in Pro Tools is the only way to go.
@@shango7942 He just showed you the mix in the DAW where it was done and that happened to be PT. I haven't used PT once in my life but i'm able to translate everything he said to my DAW of choice, especially as nothing of what he said was DAW specific in the slightest bit.
What he demonstrated has nothing at all specific to the daw. Levels, plugins and arrangement. You should stop complaining and be thankful for the amazing knowledge he's just shared with you.
@@molnoob3451 I know all that already, I'm just saying it would be nice to have another DAW being demonstrated. Like recently they had Cubase which was refreshing.
That track is annoying as shit.
