When videogame developer Kazunori Yamauchi first pitched Gran Turismo, Sony said no. A few years later it became the best-selling title in the Playstation catalog, inspired followers like Forza, Dirt, and Project Car, and motivated genre giants like Mario Kart and Need For Speed to bring their A-game. How did this happen? What makes Gran Turismo so revolutionary? And what does the future hold for the world’s favorite racing game? Join host James Pumphrey as he finds out how Gran Turismo changed gaming forever.

There's a touching and cool story that went around the horn a couple years back regarding GT. A young man's father had passed away and one day while looking through some old stuff he found a GT game and memory card or something. Anyway, there was a save on there with an insane lap time around one of the tracks that was made by his dad. The guy decided to get back into the game temporarily, git gud, and beat the time. So, for a while he would try and beat the ghost car of the insane time around this track. Just in case "ghost car" is an actual thing. Just a faded car that's a recorded version trof when that person saved the lap time. For a while this guy felt as if he was racing against his dad...as if his dad left a part of him behind. Then one day after trying and trying to beat this insane time of this lap by his dad, he was about to win. Only he realized that if that happened then he would be the new fastest time on this track so the ghost car of his dad would be deleted. So he stopped and lost. He figured he had so much fun trying to get to the time set on this track by his father, why beat it and delete it. He knew he could...and he wouldn't get anything for "winning". So he kept his dad's record lap time in case he ever felt like being as close to his dad as possible and going for a lap or 2 with him.

Gran turismo 1 was the OG. My favourite event was the Grand Valley Speedway endurance race of 60 laps in the Subaru Impreza rally car without tweaking the gear ratio. It would top out at about 257km/h but its acceleration kept it head of those other race cars with a higher top end. Definitely that race contributed to me learning to utilise the manual transmission L2/R2 really well, didn't take much to get to the high gear and smash it back down to 2nd gear on the approach to a corner. Had some favourite corners which you could only pull off using in manual and would get the most speed out of it. Definitely great memories.

I never thought that Kaz was a street racer before he became a video game developer, then a real life racing driver. Gotta thank Kaz and the Gran Turismo franchise as a whole for changing the way racing games looked and felt like forever, and we sure wouldn’t have Forza without Gran Turismo.
As a die-hard Forza fan myself (even favoring Forza over Gran Turismo), and having played games from both franchises, I have to say that sometimes I’m envious of Gran Turismo, and while both have their strengths and weaknesses, both are insanely fun to play.

Gran Turismo literally taught me how to race and drive properly. When the first one came out no believed me how accurate the feel of the cars were. Through every "game" released my skills only grew. It ultimately lead to me winning races and championships in real life racing. The thrill I get from racing people online is the same I get from doing the real thing. When I got on a real race track there wasn't a learning curve other than gravitational forces was non existent. I learned setup from Gran Turismo and the car I chose to race with was chosen from the catalog of cars I only learned about from Gran Turismo.
I can't give enough credit or thanks to this simulator for the driver I am today.
If you want an example of this monumental influence this game had on the planet, the FIA backs this simulator. Nuff said.
    Thank you Kazi.
    Thank you Polyphony Digital.
And thank you Donut Media for giving this simulator the credit it deserves.

I remember playing all the versions (yes I am that old) but gt3 really did stand out. I always got the ae86 in game so eventually, i just got a real one. And in GT Prologue, i got the gt86 in black and put enkei rs05rr wheels on it. Now i have one in my driveway with those wheels. I swear GT is just a wish list configurator haha

That’s crazy because I got my ps4 just cuz I wanted play gran tourismo , growing up my parents didn’t want to buy me any console . I’m also a big fan of the ae86 panda trueno , and now I also have a 2017 white Brz limited which I’ve put black Sti aero parts all around , which literally will give you that ae86 trueno nostalgia. I can’t wait for GT7 and build a sim at home . I’m currently 22 .

Gt3 saved my life in prison....sounds wild cuz it was, i grew up on it and while serving a short sentence years later in the big house we were allowed an hour per group to play ps2. Immediately i stood out amongst all the older car guys for being the only person to be able to beat the S license driving tests, forming some strong friendships/alliances with them...soon after i found my self in some serious trouble with the indians(native americans) after an incident that happened in the kitchen. Long story short my guy Bj was a diehard fan of racing and in some ways looked up to me for my ability to race, not too mention everyone knew he was crazy af (serving life without parol) and vowed to stab anyone that tried to mess with me in any way. God bless him for keeping me safe, I hope he is doing well.

I remember playing GT1 when it was still fresh back in the late 90's with my younger brother. We somehow earned enough credits to buy an orange colored NSX racecar (working our way from a stock Mazda Demio with a 1-liter engine or something ridiculous like that), and we were expecting to own everyone and everything with that car, but then we entered into some advanced racing series and were embarassed by stock looking Mitsubishi GTO's and Nissan Skylines. At first we were like "whaaaaaaat??!!", but then we looked into it and found out that - oh! Turns out you can tune a GTO, Skyline or Supra to 930 horsepower or thereabouts. That aspect of the game is what absolutely blew me away.
