Breville BES860 solenoid disassembly

  • Disassembly of a partially functioning two way solenoid. Although this functioned afterwards for me, the links between the solenoids cracked. I think I either put the metal where the plastic links should have been or vice versa. Also, I ran the machine without enough water getting through and perhaps it overheated the solenoid. I ended up buying a new solenoid assembly for AUD144 from Breville. The seals between the links be there reason you loose pressure, so check these.

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing the in depth solenoid video.
Hoping you might be able to help or provide some guidance. About a week ago my machine (Gastroback 42612 - German identical to the Breville BES860 internally) stopped the familiar loud buzz upon start up and just had a quiet hum. At this point, I could not press the single or double shot button nor could I run any steam from the wand. I ended up guessing that it was likely the pump that had gone, so I purchased a replacement ULKA EP5 and installed it. Now that it is installed, the single or double espresso buttons work fine and run water perfectly well, but the steam wand still does not produce any steam at all. I am guessing it might be the solenoid, but hoping you might be able to give your 2 cents. The solenoids are not super cheap (33 GBP each), so I am trying to make a more educated guess. Thanks!

Forgot to mention that if I open the steam wand for 15 seconds or so, I hear a bit of the clicking noise (not sure what causes that, but the unit has always made that noise), but nothing comes out. If I then run a shot, a bunch of excess steam runs out of the group head.

Sorry for the slow response, initially I didn't realise you had questions. At a guess I think either there or a blockage in one of the Teflon water pipes which should be easy to diagnose given you've obviously taken some of these out already to replace the pump. Failing that it does sound like the solenoid assembly could be the issue. I eventually had success with mine by cleaning the inline filter that is between the tank and water flow meter. I made a short video on the you may have seen already but that sounds fine on your machine given water flows well now. Have you checked the Teflon pipe from the solenoid to the steam? You could disassemble the solenoid and clean it prior to buying a new one. I doubt the magnets ever break but in sure the assembly gets clogged or seals wear out. Have you had any luck?

@@chrismelin6337 hi Chris, your guess was 100% right. I removed the plastic part that connects to the top of the 3 way solenoid, and it was in fact blocked. I also removed the 3 way solenoid and soaked it in vinegar to attempt to clean up any limescale build up. The machine works very well now and switches to steam instantly vs taking a bit of time that it used to. I might in the future take apart the other solenoid to see if there are any blockages and buildup. Thanks for your comment!

Great video, My old breville BES870 will not get up to a decent pressue, it seem to max out just in the espresso range after the infusion , I have tightened the OPV (right in) but it doesnt make any difference to the pressure . even with the blind basket shot. Do you think the pump may be weak or the guage is not reading correctly? many thanks

It sounds like you have the same issue as me, it’s on the second cup, not the first for me, it’s really odd.

@@TheCobste I sorted it out a whole back. It turned out to be the 2 way solonoid letting out some of the pressure by not seating properly. I knew this because at the same time it was brewing water was going into the drip tray. Changed the solonoid and now is all good.

I have the same model that has been buzzing on and off the past year and recently it got worse and the pressure hasnt been good sometimes. I'd love to make a coffee again without the awful buzzing so I attempted to clean the solenoids. Initially, to my surprise, they looked quite clean, but once I opened the same one as in this video, I also found the spring was also full of coffee grind. I thought "Great", so I cleaned it and put it all back together. Unfortunately it's still buzzing horribly and now water seems to be leaking from the solenoid that had the dirty spring (looks to be coming from the top of the solenoid through the thread). I'm sure I put I tightened it all up well, so I am wondering if either I have damaged it when untightening/tightening it with wrench pliers (wouldnt think that would cause a leak), or if the grove down the side of the plunger should not have been re-inserted along the water line.
Any ideas? I assume yours worked well again after doing this?
Also the fact that its still buzzing loudly makes me wonder if its either something else thats degraded or if the solenoid coils are no good and need replacing..

It worked after I reinserted it but I later replaced it probably mistakenly as my issue was something else. See m.ua-cam.com/video/1gEK2rDkaB0/v-deo.html. However, the buzzing sound I’m not too sure. I do get a buzzing type of sound when I move the machine sometimes and it just seems to help to fill the water tank and pull water through to clear the air in the pipes. Other times I’ve had lower tone buzzing sound and just turned the machine off and on and it went away. I don’t think that’s much help to you. You could running the cleaning cycle. Turn it off and then turn on while holding power/one cup/three cup buttons. Goes for about 5 minutes and almost a full tank of water. Good luck with your fix.

@@chrismelin6337 Thanks. Unfortunately after trying to fix the leak on the solenoid by tightening it further, I've made matters worse by over tightening it and ended splitting the metal al little. So I will replace that one and probably the other solenoid also as the buzzing noise sounded to be coming from that one. Im hoping the pump and filter are okay as pressure seemed alright before I started fiddling with things.
Regarding the buzzing noise, its often seemed to be worse after running the clean cycle. It sounded like its just causing a lot of strain on something since its trying to push water out but its got nowhere to go (except backflushing I guess). I sometimes wonder if I am doing it wrong. I am using a teaspoon of something called Unex Cafiza. No water manages to come through the portafilter, which I guess is the intention right?

@@chrismelin6337 after replacing both solenoid valves (not the entire assembly), everything is functioning well. No awful buzzing and no leaking! I was lucky to find a wholesaler with the exact same OLAB solenoids, it came to only AUD $60 (converted). Thanks for the video and help.

Hi Chris, thanks for the video. Very useful, I successfully diagnose the problem and ordered the 2/3 way solenoid and solved the no water from head group issue. However, the steam and hot water came out from the group head as well. I tried to pull out the live cable if the solenoid and the steam came out from the wand. Not sure if it’s another issue instead of the new solenoid? Not sure if it’s controller issue but the original solenoid doesn’t works this way as the new one.( no water from group head with the original solenoid)
That’s very appreciated if you can help me out. Thanks

Hi Chris thanks for sharing your repair videos. i have recently picked up a BES860 unit which apparently has kept tripping the power mains. Would you happen to know what i should be looking for first?

    • @chrismelin6337
      @chrismelin6337  5 років тому

No, I didn't have any electrical problems. Great model. My coffee is fantastic since I got it working so worth the time. My initial thought is that perhaps you could just check all the electrical cables are properly insulated. Second stage, if you can't find a problem, disconnect the electrical connections to the thermoblock and grinder to try and isolate the pump to see if the pump or pump connection is the problem... Then in other permutations to see if you can isolate the problem. Good luck.

Hi, I am trying to understand why my machine stopped working. The pump works, I tested like you suggest.
However, NO WATER flows from any of the exits: gasket, froth, other lateral hole at front.
What else could be ? Thanks in advance.

You mean the black magnets? There is a slim nut on the top. From memory I think I used the multi grips to unscrew. Normal screw, turn anti clockwise. They then slide off.

The best way to clean these is with a sonic cleaner (available today for $20-30) bath and a solution of 1 tablespoon citric acid (available at any wine/beer making supply shop) to 1 liter of luke warm water.
