Breville BES860 solenoid disassembly
Disassembly of a partially functioning two way solenoid. Although this functioned afterwards for me, the links between the solenoids cracked. I think I either put the metal where the plastic links should have been or vice versa. Also, I ran the machine without enough water getting through and perhaps it overheated the solenoid. I ended up buying a new solenoid assembly for AUD144 from Breville. The seals between the links be there reason you loose pressure, so check these.

Breville BES860 repair for low/no pressure and low water output
I am wondering if this could also be the cause of the issue that I'm having with my machine? The coffee is extracting too fast, even grinding At the finest setting the pressure needle wont risee above 1/4 of the gauge. I would appreciate your input thank u
Nice!! Thanks.
I just cleaned water filter and start working, repair store sold me pump and wasnt working ,The test for the pump is not accurate, in my case was flow little bit , but was the water filter or you call inner filter, thanks for the video
My water is going into the big cylinder fine (steam and hot water via wand is okay) but not a single drip of water comes out where the coffee is meant to go. Suggestions?
Hard to say. Clean your group head for a a start and work back from there to the water source. Try the cleaning function too - turn off, then hold the one and two cup button downs and press the power button - the cleaning cycle takes about 5 minutes. Sounds like boiler/thermoblock is OK given you can get steam but if you live in an area with hard water, you may need to descale the machine. Other options, bypass the inline filter to check this is not the problem or try to clean the flow metre (I've never done the latter). Check all the pipes are in good working order (see this video for help: ua-cam.com/video/3KBRrLc21lA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Aju%27sCafe Replacing water tubes and seals is quite cheap and easy. If you do this, suggest you also replace the over pressure value. This is something that will improve old machines so worth doing. It's also quite easy. Buy o-rings and valve/tubes online, eg: www.ebay.com.au/itm/176281188558?itmmeta=01HTRZ1ZM9FGAZC959E7171G7P&hash=item290b2d78ce:g:IxIAAOSwHi5leoEr&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8MQSbYyo4CqSb90XmWz1HhzFDWoqfy3vlV%2BaYjIwXf57tn1GoGBUBwvLUTcvpZzo26IMJZ%2BTHv0q5Rr%2FB5gB%2BuPIv4lSqce0odJQ4jA7wEulu4iPeLLvhO4J9ZEEtVOS7yh8oJ9Yf5eoDXPs4JRodwp05Zf2gPi90aZSct42v2euYswSFiOcd8OOVOy4sCzVMiMehVqHhTH%2B8xUyACuM%2FjHHF3dMBhs%2BmVP%2FyPlPvMU2uHDCxSLkOhvcM%2F3GDh2TglfLvEkHfhjWo1xdpVFvyUjC551FYNXjK0S0lNIU75A5UmwVj98Mm8TgGESmhQr0HQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR576h5_WYw and www.ebay.com.au/itm/385066782277?itmmeta=01HTRZ47FP5HX2WE1MKH52ERGZ&hash=item59a7c4ce45:g:A~wAAOSwJxxlqKL7&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4MGOx9yr5HpOAjJXR10phYRP1jpIM1GKTV93nvGWh6G6BBrGd66oGIImjL8TPt3lmw6aaZUtDWVcQrQAUT0IbXdcKX8olnSmkhMyMkGNIW0OYnMrcYt9QuVn487VrVH8WBQJlT%2ByXKDhjzW0MUQDrAPSo8fj%2Fh%2Fshb%2Fu%2FLPXGHX6bOyc9TcEcioN9dURHyOr47OCmFo0oBedn%2FbZIYEolNybgcIYuOPedmAXR5e9icPGSgNl3b63ggSNQo%2Bo4Hpn1PFwdgQ4b4gOmTy23qeJXpisjvIIu%2Bi1nHyOPjxBPqsx%7Ctkp%3ABFBM9veQn9Zj
What is the bottom part on the thermo coil? With the two yellow wires? is that a 2nd thermostat? do you know the parts no? mine broke off...
Had exact same issue. Just put that piece in Dezcal solution and put back together and works perfect now!
how can I order o-ring for this machine?
Hi Chris, thanks for all your material about Breville Espresso Machines! It is really great!! I have Breville BES860XL Barista Express Espresso Machine with Grinder and once a plug the machine and I turn it on I got a tripping breaker. Any suggestion? Thanks!
BES870XL Incredible! This is the best video I found because this "fellow" was exactly the thing that needed a cleanup. Thank you much!
This is my second Keurig Coffee Brewer. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first one lasted 6 years. It worked beautifully until the day it didn't. It was hard to go back to the drip coffee for a couple of days while I waited on my Keurig to get here. There is a huge difference in the taste. Keurig makes a really good cup of coffee. This new one is a little different from my old one. I find putting the water filter in was easier than on the old one. Attaching the water reservoir was also a little different but once I figured it out, it too was easier. This new one has the auto off feature but is not programmable like the old one. Only three cup sizes instead of four. The odd thing for me was how much lighter in weight this one is compared to my old one. More plastic and much less metal in the construction of this one. The price is so much less than the original Keurig that I bought and the coffee tastes the same so all in all I am satisfied.
Hello, many thanks for your very informative video. I have the low pressure problem in my Sage Barista Express. The pressure briefly goes up to the bottom end of the "espresso range" but then immediately drops down into the 'pre infusion' range until the water stops. It makes a full double espresso. It does the same thing on a single espresso. I have tried replacing the solenoid valve block and also cleaned out the little in line filer as you showed in your video but the problem is still happening. What would you suggest I try next? Many thanks!
Where to buy solenoid block assemblies? Genuine Breville?
Hi Chris, thanks for the video. Very useful, I successfully diagnose the problem and ordered the 2/3 way solenoid and solved the no water from head group issue. However, the steam and hot water came out from the group head as well. I tried to pull out the live cable if the solenoid and the steam came out from the wand. Not sure if it’s another issue instead of the new solenoid? Not sure if it’s controller issue but the original solenoid doesn’t works this way as the new one.( no water from group head with the original solenoid) That’s very appreciated if you can help me out. Thanks
Thank you so much for this. I also replaced the pump then when it didn’t fix it found your video and exact same issue. This inline filter was almost completely blocked. Tested and all good now.
Hi, didn’t get the start of the video so I don’t know what the coffee machine symptoms were to begin with.
Bless your heart, your video has solved our problem! We were having trouble with our BES870XL - with pressure at the group head, resulting in incomplete shots and poor crema, and the hot water spout was steaming, spurting and causing a real mess. I replaced a lot of parts - pump, safety valve, solenoid - and we were still no better off. After watching your video I took the machine apart again (I'm an expert now) and found and removed this filter. I put it in a mason jar with 100% Simple Green and immersed that in an ultrasonic cleaner for half an hour at 40ºC. Afterwards it was rinse, blow out with compressed air, repeat - about 5 times - and reinstall. Having made the other repairs I though this one was worth trying and I was hoping for the best but not expecting much. Lo and behold, everything is as new. Thank you so much!
Awesome
Thankyou Chris!!! You just saved me about $800 for a new espresso machine mate! Merry Christmas!
Great info! Your video really helped me identify and fix the inline water filter issue. Was able to take it off and back flush it (used a water pic)…especially since Breville doesn’t seem to make replacement parts (from my search).
Yup, I blew the filter (which is discontinued) out with air, and it works like new!
Hi . thank you for your video. My coffee maker is a Breville model BES870XL/B unfortunately the pressure does not rise. The gauge is working. The pump worked by taking out an output pipe from it and turning it on, and it had a good output pressure. All the pipes are clean, and I cleaned them twice with special tablets. The steam works and there is no problem. I still could not find the problem. If I find it, I have the possibility to repair it. I have two guesses, one is the external stream ring and casket and the other is the solenoid valve. In the first case, the device has no leaks at all, neither internal nor external pipes. Thank you for your advice in advance
Mine had gunk in it - but for people watching this video, don't CUT your filter - Whack it in an ultrasonic cleaner to dislodge it... Then run it under a tap / high pressure stream. then back to the ultrasonic, but held vertically so the gunk just vibrates out!
Hiya, when you had this issue, did you only experience low/no pressure from the group head? Were the steam wand / hot water dispenser working? Reason I ask is Ive got an 870XL right now with ZERO water coming out of the group head, but the steam wand works, as does the hot water dispenser (and it is also hot).
Great video, My old breville BES870 will not get up to a decent pressue, it seem to max out just in the espresso range after the infusion , I have tightened the OPV (right in) but it doesnt make any difference to the pressure . even with the blind basket shot. Do you think the pump may be weak or the guage is not reading correctly? many thanks
It sounds like you have the same issue as me, it’s on the second cup, not the first for me, it’s really odd.
@@TheCobste I sorted it out a whole back. It turned out to be the 2 way solonoid letting out some of the pressure by not seating properly. I knew this because at the same time it was brewing water was going into the drip tray. Changed the solonoid and now is all good.
appalling instruction video..
I have another unit - Barista Express-BES870XL- the water coming out of the wand just stopped. I don’t hear the motor any more that controlled the water distribution from the wand. The motor is working that sends the water through the coffee grounds. Can you tell me what is wrong with my unit? Where can I get it repaired? Where can I get the parts? Texas
I have a Duo-Temp Unit. I have around 1.5 cups of water coming out of the unit that goes through the coffee grounds. Normally it’s supposed to be around 1.5 oz (shot glass). Why is there so much water coming out? Any suggestions? Where can I order the replacement part? Thanks again. Texas
Thought I would ask the advice of others who have gone through this first before going into disassembly diagnosis of my 870 XL. The key info being my pressure and water pouring the shot is great but steam wand and hot water just dribbles out. Any ideas I should try first?
Thank you for this! We were getting very little pressure, a teeny bit of steam, a drip of hot water. Obviously we were not enjoying a nice hot espresso for the last few days. Came across your video, and went through the trouble of soaking the solenoid valves in vinegar overnight, didn’t do the trick. So clear the valves were not the problem. Then I took out the online filter - BINGO! Machine works again! You are a lifesaver! Can I send you a bag of beans?
Thank you for your very good video showing the problem with the BES860. My daughter asked me if I would look at her unit which would not indicate pressure or give a coffee. Like you I suspected either the pump or solenoid. However as these are reasonably expensive and may not give a solution I eventually found your video. 10 minutes later the problem was solved. I actually reverse flushed the filter and now the unit is working well. Up until this stage I had dismantled the unit 5 times with no success. Yes I am retired. Tony
Worked out perfect!! Thank you for making this video. Used a little drill and the stuff came right out while I rotated it slowly!! Thanks again!
Hi. Is the Pre-Tank Filter Assy has a direction?
I have the same model that has been buzzing on and off the past year and recently it got worse and the pressure hasnt been good sometimes. I'd love to make a coffee again without the awful buzzing so I attempted to clean the solenoids. Initially, to my surprise, they looked quite clean, but once I opened the same one as in this video, I also found the spring was also full of coffee grind. I thought "Great", so I cleaned it and put it all back together. Unfortunately it's still buzzing horribly and now water seems to be leaking from the solenoid that had the dirty spring (looks to be coming from the top of the solenoid through the thread). I'm sure I put I tightened it all up well, so I am wondering if either I have damaged it when untightening/tightening it with wrench pliers (wouldnt think that would cause a leak), or if the grove down the side of the plunger should not have been re-inserted along the water line. Any ideas? I assume yours worked well again after doing this? Also the fact that its still buzzing loudly makes me wonder if its either something else thats degraded or if the solenoid coils are no good and need replacing..
It worked after I reinserted it but I later replaced it probably mistakenly as my issue was something else. See m.ua-cam.com/video/1gEK2rDkaB0/v-deo.html. However, the buzzing sound I’m not too sure. I do get a buzzing type of sound when I move the machine sometimes and it just seems to help to fill the water tank and pull water through to clear the air in the pipes. Other times I’ve had lower tone buzzing sound and just turned the machine off and on and it went away. I don’t think that’s much help to you. You could running the cleaning cycle. Turn it off and then turn on while holding power/one cup/three cup buttons. Goes for about 5 minutes and almost a full tank of water. Good luck with your fix.
@@chrismelin6337 Thanks. Unfortunately after trying to fix the leak on the solenoid by tightening it further, I've made matters worse by over tightening it and ended splitting the metal al little. So I will replace that one and probably the other solenoid also as the buzzing noise sounded to be coming from that one. Im hoping the pump and filter are okay as pressure seemed alright before I started fiddling with things. Regarding the buzzing noise, its often seemed to be worse after running the clean cycle. It sounded like its just causing a lot of strain on something since its trying to push water out but its got nowhere to go (except backflushing I guess). I sometimes wonder if I am doing it wrong. I am using a teaspoon of something called Unex Cafiza. No water manages to come through the portafilter, which I guess is the intention right?
@@Dave8254 I broke my solenoid assembly too after further disassembly and reassembly. Cost me AUD145 to replace. If you post a video maybe others can assist in diagnosis.
@@chrismelin6337 after replacing both solenoid valves (not the entire assembly), everything is functioning well. No awful buzzing and no leaking! I was lucky to find a wholesaler with the exact same OLAB solenoids, it came to only AUD $60 (converted). Thanks for the video and help.
@@Dave8254 Have you got a source for these solenoid valves?
Replaced valve and pump then stumbled on your video. I was so close to quitting and buying another breville but thankfully ur video saved me a lot of money.
Thanks!
Loved your video, but most of all your honesty, before you found that blocked valve you changed that solonoide, you won't get many people telling you that your a 100% man, people need more honest men like you fixing machines love it all kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍 👍 ❤
That part looks more like a non return valve to me.
Hey friend, thanks for this!! I´m from Brazil, your tip saved my life. 🥰🥰
thanks Chris, this video saved my coffee machine as well. Tips for troubleshooting: (got it from home-barista forum) Do a run with just the rubber cleaning inlet to see if you get any pressure (I got almost 0) Let water run without gasket under to see how the water flow is (compare to video here when ppl do an empty run before making a coffee) See if the plain hot water flow is slow as well (compare to friend machine or video on YT) Cleaned my filter out with toothpick and banging it on the kitchen counter.
Thanks for these videos, excellent explained! Mine is an Infuser 840XL, and I have very low pressure, the water is coming out from the head but after 10-15 seconds and low debit. Also, when I turn on the machine, I have a humming (muffled, not sure how to explain it) sound (before it was louder). I did a pressure test with the cleaning disk wrapped in plastic foil, and I see the gauge moving for a few seconds. I removed the inline filter and clean it, and water is flowing without any problems. Also, I found a spring in the hose between the water tank and the inline filter, is it normal? If the pump is broken, can I still get water through the head?
Hi Doru. Hard to diagnose. I think you could try testing the pump while it is in the machine. If you disconnect the teflon pipe that goes from the top of the over pressure valve from the bioler (disconnect from boiler - see number 1 in this diagram wiki.jmehan.com/display/KNOW/Breville+Barista+Repair?preview=/21135518/21135521/IMG_3757.jpg ) you can then try to run a cup and see that you are getting water from the pump (you can direct the water into a cup or any other container). If you do this and there is no problem, the issue could be in your boiler (thermoblock in your model I think?) or more commonly, the solenoid valve assembly - in which case, probably easier to replace it. If you don't get enough water in your cup, then you know the problem is between the over pressure vale and the tank, which narrows it. The most common issue is the the pump, which you can replace but you can also try bypassing the inline filter. Suggest you remove the filter in the tank while testing too to eliminate this as a cause. Good luck!
@@MIPSAustralia Thanks for the diagram! I will do the test, do I need to remove the power wire from the boiler when I do this test? Is there a danger to run the boiler without water?
I changed the water pump and it look good now, pressure is back. My only concern is that the new pump is a different model, it was advertised as Breville 810/840 model by the distributor (Canadian). The original one not working is Model EF Type EFP5 52W versus new pump Model EFM Type EP5FM 46W. I have another Breville model BRE800ESXL "Duo-Temp" that I used as backup until now, and this one is using thermoblock to heat the water. The issue with this machine is that is not always heating , I get a first espresso hot, then it stays in heating mode, but next shots are all cold. I have to stop and start the machine, sometimes multiple times to get again a hot shot. Do you think it's an issue with the thermoblock or maybe an electrical contact?
Winner winner.. Espresso will be served after dinner! - THANK YOU!
Working on this now.. Just found the two screws that I wasnt aware of to open.. ua-cam.com/video/96IuKiuIB5A/v-deo.html
Super helpful, thank you @Chris Melin. I have the BES920xl (the dual boiler), and this video and the comment thread even moreso helped me troubleshoot the problem. I had done all sorts of work (symptom is very low flow from group head, but regular flow from hot water and steam wand, descale indicator always was on). Your comments led me to pull apart the solenoid, and sure enough there was a piece of a degraded o ring wedged in the outlet aperture of the valve ... and it all works great now!
Hi, I think I have similar issue to you. Hot water spout work fine and so does steam. Does that mean pump is ok? However no pressure at group head. Even with blind disc inserted there is no pressure on the dial after 50s. I sometimes hear gurgling. The solenoid looks in good condition. However I can see some water on top of the valve that sits above the pump itself .. could this be due to a block?
Thank you for this video. I wasn't getting any pressure until about 30 seconds of pouring the shot. I knew that the pump was working because of that pressure. My water spout also was coming out but very little and the water was splattering everywhere. I took off the tank and the back panel of the machine and saw the inline filter clogged (the one referred in this video). I couldn't find any replacement part and so I decided to clean it. I used an air can that has a straw (the type used to air out dust in electronics) and ran water through it until the water flow was good. The ties are important, use new ties. I couldn't get all the muck completely out, only about 80% of it. That is the cheapest solution. It worked like a charm. I hope this helps someone out.
Thank you, this video and your comment specifically helped me out! I had the same problem exactly! The filter looked fine, it was a Hail Mary pass as I was desperate to fix this issue. It worked. Thank you SO much.
Actually is possible to remove almost all gunk from inside. Flush it in contra flow under the tap. Then you can soaked in vinegar for 15 min. Then flush it again. Put short rubber pipe on clean side and tapping on the sink rotating the filter. Gunk become loose so you can flush it out. Use vinegar again if needed. Repeat procedure till happy with results. Other option is buy new one somewhere. Or delete it.
THANKS!!! I ALMOST BOUGHT A NEW MACHINE . Had my breville for 3 years thought it was time to retire it. I had low water and no pressure, so I pulled the filter like your said. I BLEW THRU IT USING MY MOUTH.... TOTALLY BLOCKED!!! I removed it and busted it open -- iT wouldn't come open otherwise ... the SCREEN WAS TOTALLY BLOCKED WITH SOME FIBERS -- BLACK GUNK. <--- FIBERS FROM THE REQUIRED BREVILLE FILTER...? Should have blew it out with compressed air, or used a needle to scrape the gunk away. It is just a screen filter to prevent large particles from entering the machine. Just took the whole thing out, will replace later with a better in-line screen filter. PERFECT OPERATION........ EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE!!! PRESSUE UP TO 12 O-CLOCK POSITION ON MY MACHINE, FIRST SHOT EXTRACTion!!! I SUSPECT THIS I WHY MY MACHINE WAS RUNNING A BIT CRAPPY ALL ALONG...
Where did you get the parts??
The pump I bought on eBay. There was quite a few suppliers. The solenoid assembly I had to call Breville and pay over the phone. I’m Im in Australia. I never replaced the inline filter and in the end bypassed it as the quality of tap water is so good here I think it was rather useless.
Thanks for that, I have replaced the group head seal with a brand new one on the same machine, its fitted correctly and firmly, still water spurting out from the handle cup especially at the beginning then it stops spurting , any idea what could be the problems please ?
That does sound like a bad seal. I presume you mean the water comes out the top of the portafilter. While you are fiddling, you can also remove the screen on the group head and clean are re-install this. This is only one screw, so rather simple (see upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fb/Grouphead.jpg/220px-Grouphead.jpg ). If you have installed the seal well and it is the correct size, this should eliminate this problem. This made sound obvious, but the basket needs to be in the portafilter. You could also try winding the grind size down so the water can more easily flow through the portafilter and basket. Remember to adjust the grind size while you are grinding.
@@chrismelin6337 Thanks Chris, I have taken the machine back to where I bought the seal, they are having a look at it, I should be picking it up soon.
Awesome! This tip totally help me fix my breville S820. Just cleaned the filter by reverse flushing it under the tap. Good as new!
Hello, there is a fix for low water temperature? Even at the highest setting, the brew temp is under 190° and the shots are very sour and astringent. What to do to reach 200°? Thanks!
Sorry Schiaucu, I haven't encourtered that problem. The thermostat might be the culprit and this sits on top of the thermoblock. Hard to diagnose unless you replace: eg: spares.bigwarehouse.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=64928_68652_68653&products_id=1674317
