Shufai's story

  • Shufai is a young, western lowland gorilla, one of the many victims of the illegal bushmeat trade in Cameroon. He was so badly injured and traumatised when he arrived at Ape Action Africa that no-one expected him to survive. Our vet team and experienced carers, led by our Director Rachel Hogan, worked round the clock to fight for his survival.
    This is his story.....

The fact that his emotional needs were honored by not forcing personal contact for two weeks tells me you are angels and this little boy now has a happy life because of your respect for him. When Rachael finally did connect with him finally after two weeks, he had the time to recover enough to heal and open his heart to her. How lovely that is!

@@MegaKikeGasGas Enrique, I am very sorry for your pain, and I hope you make a full recovery very soon. I too know pain. I have had a debilitating disease for thirty seven years now, and have been in pain almost every day for each of those years. Humans are not responsible for my troubles, though. I imagine, as hard as it is to be in pain, it is made worse by knowing it was inflicted on you deliberately. The only thing I would say to you is that if you don't avoid bitterness and self-pity (I'm not suggesting, for one moment, that you are either bitter or self-pitying, but it is easy to slip down that road), you harm yourself, and diminish the good days for yourself, and those around you. Those two things are more destructive than any disease, or injury. My heart goes out to you, and I hope your pain will stop, and that your next surgery will be successful, and final. You are obviously a good person, who has been through terrible hardship. Stay strong, Enrique. You'll make it out the other side. There will be good days again. I will be thinking of you and wishing you well.

Shufai, was, cleaning onto his mother as she & her family of other gorillas were being shot at with a shot gun. Shufai's mother & family were killed. Shufai, though being hit, by pellets, was mostly protected by his dying mother, was rescued when the poachers were disturbed by park wardens. He was seriously injured & endured an operation to save his life, then a lengthy recovery by the staff of Mefou national park. To answer your question, I wouldn't kill a whole family of Gorillas to sell off their body parts as souvenirs. People in Africa don't usually eat Gorillas as Bush meat. There are plenty of other things they hunt that are more abundant. Westland/Eastland & more so the Mountain Gorillas are critically endangered. So the question of killing to feed a family with Gorilla meat is very rarely practiced. It's for the greed for money. Poachers would get a pittance, but the buyer's make an unnecessary fortune.

It's always interesting that there's a small group of society who assume that people who are compassionate to animals do not feel likewise to people, and don't consider to ask what we do for the children and their families in our area in Cameroon....water, electricity, a school, toilets in schools so they don't use their playground as an open toilet, life saving
vaccinations for 500+ people.....to name but a few.

Hi. Thank you for your comment! There are lots of things that you can do to help to protect gorillas. 🦍Reduce, reuse and recycle. Avoiding buying tropical wood will help to save our forests and recycling your old electronics will help to reduce demand for mining in gorilla habitat.
🦍If you are buying products made from wood or containing palm oil, make sure they come from certified sustainable sources to help reduce deforestation. 🦍Share our stories with friends and family to raise awareness of our primates and the threats they face from deforestation and the illegal bushmeat and wildlife pet trades.
      🦍Adopt Shufai at www.apeactionafrica.org/adopt-an-ape.

it's heart braking thinking that they could be thinking " what did I do." Why is this happening to me?" Yes a special kind of hell for them.

You couldn't ask for a better outcome, peace and blessings to the doctor that helped him. He needed someone to be there, someone to hold him except him embrace him. He needed to know somebody was there and they were listening and they were a caring hand and not a deadly hand.

Hurting animals is signs of psycopathy. An entire village of people and kids tortured that baby. That is scary as hell. Poor little guy.

Glad to see this video. I read his story after adopting him. He is older now, but lost part of his arm. It was heart breaking to read his story.
