Excellent video! Thank you! I own a C40 and I road trip over 360 miles each week. The AAOS system coupled with the heat pump preconditions the battery for fast DC charging. Over time you will dig deeper into the advanced features Volvo is using to make their BEVs superb road trip vehicles.
Great point about the transition from cruise control back to one-pedal drive. My Ioniq 5 does that abrupt transition which is very annoying. Glad to hear that Volvo has got it much smoother.
Thanks for the excellent review. I would say overall Volvo got some of the EV details better than most legacy auto makers. On the negative side, I just think all Volvos should be quieter because they're premium/lux vehicles. Also, I found the solidity of the Polestar 2 and the Volvo xc40 to be equal with the material fit a bit better on the XC40. I think that's just because Polestar is using more "sustainable" materials. But both are extremely solid feeling cars from my own sampling. I prefer the xc40 to c40. If something is billed as a utility vehicle it has more utility if it has more space inside. Overall, for some strange reason, the XC40 rides better (over rough roads) than the xc90 The xc60 is somewhere in the middle.
I agree that, on paper, 200 miles is plenty of range for most Americans, especially as one vehicle in a two vehicle household. But I only keep one car and I don't think that I could live with it, haha. I do like the XC40 Recharge and I like the C40 even more, but I would probably lease one of these over buying due to the limited range.
And I do believe even the FWD base XC40R has more range than the UX300e BEV... (like 264mi for Volvo vs. 186mi. for Lexus, both on WLTP specs) Maybe that 186mi range (probably like 166mi under US-EPA numbers) is why Lexus didn't brought their UX300e Stateside (also the amount of "unobtanium" that model has elsewhere). Kirk, the FWD version of the XC40R only increases the range over the AWD by 5mi under WLTP specs (4 under EPA).
Can't wait to get a hybrid volvo in the future. Currently driving a gas XC90. Your observation on the XC90s suspension is exactly my experience. It's too firm for my liking. When I gave this for service recently I told them about it, but was told that that's the way the car is tuned. I also am not a huge fan of the cabin noise, good in the city, but very noisy on the freeway.
I really enjoyed your review. It stands apart from the run-of-the-mill ones by your real-world assessments of the pros and cons and your obvious enthusiasm for cars in general and for this Volvo in particular. A detail: the crystal shifter you mentioned comes with the tailored wool seats only.
Great review Kirk, prefer the black interior to the blue one. Want to know, Why wait 3 days to charge in 120v when a level 2 or 3 could do it way faster? As much as we're Honda fans, the tail light design belongs to Volvo. Also, does this head unit have the problem where Maps freezes when on satellite view? Thanks
I cant find the info on this but im interested in this vehicle and other volvos like it. What i want to know is: if i have a full battery and a full tank of gas, will the battery last the whole fuel tank?? Will i be able to get the roughly 74mpge for the full tank or will i run out of battery halfway through the week and therefore be getting maybe 30 mpg for the rest of the week ...i know it can harge while driving(or so I believe)but I'm sure that takes awhile.i dont own a home, theres not many chargers around here...if I knew I could charge it once a week at a local charging station then id prob get a volvo
Kirk I have a Kia eSoul that came fully loaded. When I went to the Volvo dealer and asked about a heat pump (included in the Soul) it was $1500 extra. Adaptive cruise? (standard in the Soul) Oh, that’s an extra technology package. Etc. Etc. 👎
My best pal's wife has one in Miami. She LOVES it. And she is a former Land Rover driver.
I really like that car.

Excellent review. Thanks!
This is the drive review I’ve been looking for. Thank you!

11:21 Love that wagon prototype! Here's hoping Volvo will give it some classic Swedish wagon styling cues when it comes to production.
Brilliant job by volvo .xc40 is a brilliant ev . 💜. Its lexus rival is the ux300e which is not sold in north america

I have this car and love it so much. We could use more space so I’m excited about what they do with the Embla.

Can’t wait for affordable electric cars or any affordable cars actually
You can keep the electric car’s because living in Deep South Texas we don’t have many charging stations but load of gas stations.

Start button that was capped. Kinda cheesy / lazy design effort.
Ohhh
I think it´s better to buy a Ionic 5 or Kia EV6 with 320 HP for $ 55 - 60k as this Volvo.
