The newest "refreshed" XC40 Recharge is getting a lighter grey premium wool blend interior soon! So you can have your lighter color interior! Tho it's not electric my current 2021 XC40 T5 Rdesign with the Polestar optimization package is a great little package. Fingers crossed when my lease is up I have better access to charging and can make the switch to an EV.
Love your elaboration on this electrify XC40 Recharge. I’ve been driving it for two months here in Hong Kong and everytime I finished my ride with it, I smile literally!
Love my XC40 as well. Range doesn't bother us at all since we drove all the way from Vancouver to LA using Electrify America chargers without any issues. We're ok with less range for the occasional road trips and spend 30 min more charging over 10h day drive and get the Volvo quality on the daily. We're waiting for the Polestar 2 single-motor now. No need for 2x 400hp vehicles.
Another awesome review! To your point on the early versions of Pilot Assist, we have a 2021 XC60 T5 and a 2021 XC40 T5, both with pilot assist and around 10k miles on each… just got them serviced in mid-March and both needed 4 new rotors. Zero signs of excessive brake dust/wear but man when they grab… they grab. The seatbelts could perform CPR as tight as they retract! We’d love to have an XC40 Recharge but KY’s infrastructure just isn’t there yet (where we need it to be). Impossible to (quickly and efficiently) get from Louisville to the western part of the state unless you’re in a Tesla (or want to charge at ChargePoint Level 2 along the way)

Another great review.... Wasn't expecting it since you've already driven the Polestar 2 - which as you said is basically the same car - but was pleasantly surprised.... We bought not one but two XC40 Recharge. We bought one mid last year and my other half managed to wreck the car in a front-end collision. We love the car so much we bought another one to replace the one that we lost....
I had a i4 M50 preordered and got the XC40 since I didn’t want to wait for 12 months. I love it and the range doesn’t bother me with my occasional longer drives. It really depends on your habits. It is premium and fun to drive but not good in terms of range.
We own one. I think the vibration in the steering you were feeling was the lane assist. It took me awhile to figure out w/o a turn signal on, the steering wheel is designed to shimmy when you leave a lane. I love ours, I have charging desert EV road trips lined up. Super excited.
I just bought this car because of you. I pick it up Monday. They had an ultimate trim too. I had to search for it for weeks. My advise is to ask a dealer when they get a new shipment. They should know. Be there when they open that day and wait for it to arrive.
Awesome review 🙌 Would love to see that unique XC40. With Polestar Performance Pack and a bright interior. Sounds amazing. Especially if throwing in Bowers & Wilkins as well 👍 Also agree with the Pilot Assist functionality. Should use seatbelts and horn as well to alert the driver.

Another great review. I would like if you did just a Pilot Assist/self driving on all the EVs that you review/test because for me the driving assist features on a car is a big buying indicator.
Great review, Kyle! I love my XC40 but thinking about trading it in ONLY due to its range. Since I want to drive the car in the local cities AND road trip with it, I need a bit more range due to the lack of chargers where I would want to road trip the car. I'm going to be sad when I trade it in but it really is a fun car to drive. The speed on this is awesome and the handling is great as you mentioned.
That is the reason I still have a T5... I don't want to pay for an expensive car that can't go very far, doesn't look or feel different, and I also need to spend a few thousand dollars retrofitting my house to accommodate the EV charger that may or may not work because I don't have a garage. They were targeting this as a city car with a small range but didn't consider why anyone would spend that much on a car they would drive ten miles a day (Get a Toyota then). I would only be able to charge it at a supermarket and not my house, and spend 40 minutes every day waiting around like that; the car and charging it would be taking over my life and schedule and make me miserable, so for me I'm still driving the gas model.

I feel like a dingus in the EV space sometimes because it seems to cater to people who either don't mind wasting money on leases or don't mind rolling negative equity into one trade-in after another
Ok, I get it, you want to drive fast, but why would you “rip into” the safety guy when they suggest limiting top speed to 112 mph - when it is literally illegal to drive that fast in the US?

We purchased one 6 months ago, and love it, but with it's range, it's a luxury second car. Our range has been 150-170, but it's been unseasonably cold.
I appreciate the info on this car - I have a front wheel drive model on order in UK. Apparently, one can drive it with no hands on the steering wheel for several yards or is this one on a trailer!
They just announced the upgraded specs for this and the C40, and to your point regarding the rear v. front axle ratio...the rear will now have a 183kw perm motor with the front being 117kw asynch motor!
I've had this vehicle for about a year now. I agree with most of the review. It's a fun car to drive, great for around town. 12.7 quarter mile time is accurate. Cold weather hits the battery hard though, and the tech in this car is a dumpster fire. It randomly won't open the doors, the google OS is lag-city most of the time, it constantly gets confused on what key is driving the vehicle. It's also really annoying there are no physical buttons for climate control. You either have to talk to google, or use menus on the touch screen to change the temps. (And it only does 2 degrees at a time?!). The cameras always delay turning on and off at the most annoying times. Also, the build quality in general is kinda cheap. Less than a year and both the sunroof and the windshield have cracks in them, and you can't even identify the source without a ballpoint pen they're so small. If this car cost less, it might be worth it, but I do not consider it 60K well spent. I probably wouldn't buy this car again.

Volvo XC40 Recharge... the STEALTH EV! I like those. I like the etron myself, partly because it doesn't shout "Tesla" or that sort of EV.
THink its funny how Kyle is like, "This is the one I'd choose" and then mentions how the Polestar2 performance is pretty "sweet" though. LOL
on cornering and front rear motor power. does the volvo have continual monitoring and adjustment of power to wheels? does the car tell you what power is being used by each motor?
You can't compare an ID4 to this Volvo. The ID4 is like driving a boat. Totally different experience.
I had a 2018 xc90 and breaks and rotors all warped and worn had to replace twice during ownership. Got a 2021 last year with no issues at all so far.
just bought one of these. SO MUCH FUN! I love the car. The range is a bit of a bummer. I only get about 180 mile range on highway vs about 240 mile range in city.
More range in the city than highway??
I know read that the P6 on this version is coming out. I wouldn't mind the P6 version, I also am a RWD kinda girl. But for a vehicle that would be as safe as the Volvo is, the looks (perfect for me), range (well, isn't the best if you look at the national speed limit here), and FWD isn't the end of the world. I can see what the good is with a bit more than the half. 231hp. Would keep looking at the Volvo XC40 as ideal for me, and the Mini Cooper SE as the perfect - No I don't have space for anyone else get around.
Offroad it! Offroad it! Please! How is it compared to the ID4 with wheels in the air? Does it have a battery skidplate?
After driving most of the competition, my wife is hooked on the XC40 recharge. She will be the primary driver.
I was surprised, since I had my heart set on the Model Y before test driving both, but like the Volvo driving experience much more then the Y. We will not have gull wing doors, so the Model X is out.
I wasn’t able to test drive the ID.4 though. How is driving the experience of the XC40 Recharge vs the ID.4?
Don’t bring range into the equation. Commuting and everyday driving falls below 100 miles, even on a longer errand driving days, and we use our built out 170”WB Sprinter van for road trips. 👍🏼

Trust me. The XC40 drives A LOT better than the ID.4! I’ve tested them all. The ID.4 was the first EV I drove, and obviously fell in love. But… then I drove all the others… Me and my wife instantly ordered the XC40 Twin Ultimate after borrowing it for a day.
We did try the ID.4 GTX again though, one last time. And damn.. It’s not even in the same ballpark when it comes to driving. The break pedal is mushy and not precise at all on the GTX in comparison, and the one pedal drive is crap on the ID.4, it doesn’t break enough, so you still need the break pedal.
The ID.4 is a little roomier In the back seat though, and it looks good (XC40 looks even better though, imo).
How would you rate this awd Volvo against the Audi Q4 50 awd you drove in Italy?
I spec'ed a Q4 and it's ten grand more that the XC40 awd Ultimate (now with an option for "zinc"/grey wool fabric seats + the forward interior is lightened & has an ambient feature - to get away from that all black look), but extra cost aside how do you think they stack up against eacother?
On long constant highway drives does Volvo divert all power to the RWD/FWD ? Or does it stay AWD the entire time? This may be where you are seeing the range loss?
Volvo is kinda differentiating itself from Polestar. At least they kept the drive modes for the XC60.

ok Kyle, I was also checking this cars battery warranty, interesting is that they have about the same KM and duration as Kia / Hyundai, but the big stickler, Volvo warrants the battery as 80% capacity from new while the Hyundai IONIC 5 and Kia EV6 kicks in when the capacity is lower than 70%. But if you look at the net capacity seems Kia and Hyundai with their large buffer will likely not approach that 70%, while the Volvo using such a large part of the capacity would likely hit that 80% possibly before warranty expiry. But problem is Volvo Belgium mfg cars are using LG chem batteries, not exactly and renown battery manufacturer.
I'm the "numbers on paper" guy, so it's Ioniq 5/EV6 for me, but I could see buying this used in a few years as a second car for around town and a back country drive. A used XC40 for a hauling the kids locally, and an Ioniq 5 for the road trips would be a good combo.
The Ioniq5 would be a contender for us, but it's a 2-3 year wait, and any that ARE for sale are marked up a lot (here in BC) where there are huge wait lists. So we'll find an XC40 instead.
Nice review! Had the car myself for 17 months and very happy with it. Range isn’t everything, especially when it recharges with 150 kW up to about 40% at least.

drove an XC 40 recharge recently, I really liked it apart from the HUGE REAR VIEW MIRROR CLUSTER!!!!! I had the seat on the floor and the wheel all the way out to try and accommodate it and it was still in the way. No sale
My work have offered me the entry level version of this car as a company car but the Tesla Model 3 entry level is the next tier up from mine so can't order it. But they cost about the same! The Tesla would give you 0-60 in 5.8 seconds rather than 7.4, it would have 305 miles of range rather than 263 and most of all you'd have a much better and more reliable charging network to use. So I don't get it? Corporate stuff I guess.
same price as the repriced Tesla Y Performance without the range, technology etc.......What am I missing?

I don’t like this compromise chassis and relatively low range compared to Tesla and other EVs. The giant air vents make dash look so old, maybe built in 1960s. But, must commend them for losing the start/stop button. There is NO need for a start/stop button in an EV. I wonder if button is deliberate in some brands because ICE owners are most familiar with using a key or button to start the vehicle.
Looks like a great car. I would order one right now, but the choices of Volvo are holding me back. Why is the interior only dark black, I would like a light coloured interior. Volvo has always been a luxury brand, luxury brands give you choice. Having an only black interior is unacceptable.
My first car was a Volvo and my second a Saab. Now I drive a Prius and… its boring! Also, getting old and not very comfortable. Maybe it’s time to go Swedish again. I miss my Saab.
$60k for this kind of mileage does not seem worth it to me.
Agreed. If I was getting a Volvo though I'd rather have this or the C40 recharge... Not some gas or plugin... Volvos are expensive...
@MultiTroll84 I like camping trips and road trips. My Niro has 500km of range and it's adequate but more would be nice - like Aptera with 1000 km of range...

my comment on 'why do we need a start button' at least in my experience there is some time that I just want to turn the accessory on and without a start button no one has really figured out a way to do that. In the Tesla sure hit the brake pedal but it powers up the entire car, turns on all the lights, etc. The ID.4 I literally had to get out and back in the car after waiting in a parking lot for 30m. Embarrassingly later I remembered it had the button, but It was nice out, rolled the windows down and read a book and listened to music. Waiting on my son to finish his 50m class.
Sure an edge case, but why I like the buttons still.
As long as you are in the drivers seat the XC40 will stay on. So no need to have a ACC function (switch).
Agree. I like having a power button. Maybe it's a psychological fault on my part but I like being able to affirmatively turn things off. Eliminates a source of anxiety.
@@DougThompson Is there a way to keep it on if you have a passenger in the car only? Maybe leave the keys or something?
@@TheRealSpuff You can leave the car on for a passenger, but it is set with a timer that lasts only 30 min. Some owners have complained about that.
ID.4 literally has a start/stop button on the steering column . It's not used for starting the car per say as you can just sit and hit the brake pedal but you can use it to turn on the accessories ......
Subbed to several of your channels recently, great reviews. You’re dead wrong about the cyclists though. They have every right to use the road and it’s often the safest option for them, although mildly inconvenient for motorists for a few moments. As a Volvo/ safety guy I hope you’ll educate yourself on this more and reevaluate your position.
This is very hit and miss. Cyclists near me often ride 3 or 4 wide when the law allows 2 abreast max. They frequently blow stop signs and red lights, etc. If cyclists want to be respected as road users they need to follow the laws like everyone else, not pick and choose which laws they like.
I find a small percentage of cyclists actually behave properly, signal properly, and ride properly. They create the dangerous situations for themselves.
In this case, you're right, they can assert full lane control if they desire, but that doesn't prevent Kyle from passing as long as the requisite 4 feet is given. In most states.

You're dead wrong about the cyclists though. Riding a bicycle in the middle of road instead of to the right like you're supposed to, aside from a few instances, is usually not the safest option and leads to fatal accidents and congestion. I hope you'll educate yourself on this more and reevaluate your position.
It’s hard to take seriously the comment on cyclist safety from a guy going north of 80mph on that road.
Let me clear: I’m not against spirited driving. I just think this is a blind spot worth recognizing.
Can someone explain the Google services thing to me - how much money will I have to pay to keep using them after the 4-year trial period ends? I can’t even imagine an EV where the nav stops working until you pay Google.
Am I misunderstanding the situation?
You pay for celluar service not for google maps
@@zansab2196 it was pretty clear that without the cell service, you get no maps.
Volvo says pricing for the car's data is to be determined, it is free for 4 years as you stated. If you don't continue it after 4 years, I assume you could use google maps thru Apple Carplay, and use the data on your phone. Assuming Carplay comes via OTA update this year. Tesla gives you data for navigation for free, but charges $100/year for music/video streaming and other features. Volvo may adopt a similar strategy.
@@FuncleChuck yup there is no charge for the Google services the only cost is the cellular data plan. After the included free service you can just hook a cell phone with wifi and get connected
At the limited range and $60k, I'd prefer the Model Y
But the Volvo can get $7500 in Federal tax credits, bringing the price well below the Model Y ($63K).
Shhhh….you can’t say Tesla. Watch the video or comments. “I’d get Ioniq 5”, “I’d get Ev6”…. “Not EV6 fast”…. All while ignoring the elephant in the room, model Y performance is WAY faster, has more range, and is 68 compared to this mid 60’s car

This would have already been my wife's car if it had a light interior. She can't abide a dark interior, Come on Volvo, give a light interior option.
They're already working on it....the new "refreshed" one is going to offer that lighter grey premium wool blend seats like in the XC60 and XC90....I keep getting lots of adds for it on instagram and FB and it looks soooo good. I currently have the XC40 T5 Rdesign and I too wish it had the lighter interior.....I had a 2008 XC70 in the lighter tan ext with the blonde/tan interior...such a nice and bright interior...except for the glossy wood trim...LOL

ok Kyle again you got into me automotive EV Soul! I was all set for my Ionic 5 AWD Ultimate reservation coming in May now not till end of October, I think I'll trade up to the Volvo XC40, the big thing is that should Tesla open up to CCS the charger is a close location to where the Tesla's charge port is so maybe one of the view EV that will not have parking issues for the Tesla open CCS network when it happens in N.A.! I have to say here in Canada one of my most important Electrified Canada stations just recently went down in Hope BC, so having Tesla as backup when and if it happens with a car that should lend it'self to their current charger setup, it looks really great. The other thing I have not seen anything on Battery preconditioning with the Ionic, seems Volvo and Polestar are actively updating their software, that cannot be said about Mach-e, I heard that early adopters in Canada and the USA still have the old software with that poor charging performance, come on Ford get with the updates!

I think the reason for the dark interior is due to where the cars are assembled. I believe the older (ICE like B)cars are built in one plant and the EV are built in a other one. Don't take my word for it but I think it's built in China. And the older ones in Europe (Sweden).
This is an over 5 year old platform and really feels like a hack job of an EV. I would get a dedicated EV like one of the E-GMP cars or a Mach-E over any of these Volvos.
CMA was designed with electrification in mind from the very beginning... I haven't heard anyone say it felt like it was "hacked" together as an EV until now and the platform underpins numerous [PH]EVs from Polestar, Volvo, Geely, and Lynk... it's a generally very well regarded, and modern, platform.
Funny thing about being designed by woman, my wife is huge on having a trash container in her cars too… I don’t get it🙄

Great point about 112mph speed limit. Stupid. In the US it is OK but I would never buy one in Germany.

You’re probably right not to buy this vehicle - but your line of thinking makes no sense to me. You often drive 200 miles a day? Why do you need more range?
If you’re driving this much, you probably will be relying on DC fast charging - so the charge speed is the more important factor.
But even then… if you’re not charging at home (or work) almost *all of the time* then an EV is nearly always a bad option for you.

I don't drive long distances daily, but I do take weekend road trips within a ~100 mile radius frequently. For me the ability to do such trips on one charge is a design requirement. Plus that 200-220 mile EPA range is under ideal conditions; in colder weather it'd be significantly less.
Add to this the fact that the car retains little battery reserve, engendering some concern about long-term battery health and durability.
It's a nice car, and when I was shopping I looked at its Polestar sibling and really liked a lot about it. But that range is just insufficient for my needs.
@@MLHunt sad to hear that not a single DC charge point exists in your region. Even 10 minutes on one of those would make your worries irrelevant.
@@FuncleChuck I take trips every month that are in the 500-600 mile range AND I believe in having some margin for broken chargers, side trips, etc. The range of this Volvo just takes it out of contention for me. For a daily city driver and/or infrequent trips, it is okay.
I guess range is similar to insurance, you don't need it until you need it. :-)
Ok, it gets no range for $60,000, but Kyle finds an excuse to say it is ok for most people. I find that a bit dubious.
Agreed. The proliferation of these $50k+ semi-luxury BEVs is further damaging the the public opinion of EVs as being only for impractical and rich people, or hideously ugly tiny cars.
It’s just makes it even harder to drum up support for mandates and DC fast charging rollout when it’s currently only going to support Rich Tech Bros and Environmental Activists.

I think he is just referring that most ppl don’t drive 200 miles round trip daily. But it just seems that you can get a few other evs with more epa range than this. Specifically the lyric seems to make more sense. Although, who knows when that would be available

The price is what I take issue with.
I agree that the Range Anxiety is total BS. Most people don’t need 200 miles. Even charging overnight on 120V L1 you’re going to get your 50 miles commute refilled. Even someone driving 80 mi a day will be OK if they get a weekend day or a single tiny fast charge. And that’s just on 120V L1.
I bought the Audi e-tron SUV and it gets like 180 real world miles. I don't drive those kind of miles daily, so it works for me. I don't think most people drive that many miles on a daily basis, right?
"It is ok for most people." Most people don't live in US either. ;) Europe has double the population, way shorter distances and better charging infrastructure (I presume). And Volvo is just perfect over here.
As a driver, remember that cyclists are usually riding in the middle of the road because they have no idea you are coming up behind them because you are going waaaay faster than them in a nearly silent vehicle. You ride your bike the same way when you think there is nobody around. Just give them a sec and they will move over. Don't blame them - blame yourself for driving like you are the only person on Earth and can't comprehend a different perspective than your own.
Would be nice if that was the case but not always true. I have been a cyclist for over 40 years and find that many ride with a complete disregard for rules of the road and their own safety. Maybe you should examine what drives your perspective and don't assume that all cyclists behave appropriately and all drivers are the enemy?

Just give it up already. The driver in the vehicle admitted he was speeding and you could see he was driving in the middle of the road. That’s breaking 2x the laws the cyclists were.

@@TheAdventureAutoI do have to defend that line of thinking though. Nearly every BEV built today is the “fast” one - there are nearly zero practical ones. That makes it incredibly difficult to get public opinion to sway and to get proper subsidies, DC fast charge stations built, and fleet mandates passed.
BEVs will rule the future. They’re just better. But we only delay that future by selling only impractical $60k luxury toys that go “too fast”
@@FuncleChuck Well technically aren't electric motors just efficient and capable all in one? Essentially manufacturers would just be software limiting the power. Also, due to the cost of batteries, manufacturers don't want to limit the power because at these required high price points you have to price it as a performance vehicle that it can be. My BEV can go 5 miles/kWh(200wh/mi) when I want to take it easy.
@@FuncleChuck Practical ones can be made, but people, especially in the US don't really care because they want inefficient BEVs like the Hummer. It's a double edged sword.
