I've had my 22 xc40 recharge for close to two months now and have loved driving it every day! I have a 50 mile round trip commute and it is great in winter weather. Looking forward to taking a couple road trips this summer. Great review!
Honestly 200 miles highway range is pretty decent. Especially for the performance this offers, and the relative lower cost compared to Model Y. This would handle 95% of what we’d ask of it (besides towing and long road trips), and for the other 5% could just use our ICE vehicle.
You should watch Bjørns 1000 km challenge video on the C40. It did quite well actually. 10h 35 min. Faster than ID4 rear wheel drive, Mach E long range, Mercedes EQC and only 5 min slower than Ioniq5 that was tested in warmer weather same route.
The Ioniq 5 is much bigger, so camparing to the C40 is silly. It was also tested before Bjorn figured out that you need to turn off HVAC to cool the battery. EV6 is also bigger than C40, and did 1000km in 9h55m. Model Y 9h45m. C40 is slower than EQA, Enyaq, and more. So no, 10h35m is not "quite well" compared to newer EVs.
Love my ‘22 XC40 Recharge. Perfect for getting around town, fits 2 car seats for the kiddos, and insanely fun to drive. Range never comes into play for me personally, so never get to experience the potential downside of the car.
Holy moly! Top notch stuff as always! 10/10! The best rangetester on UA-cam. You answered and covered every single thing I expected to ask/whine. 🤣🤣 Side note. For a country just a bit bigger than Colorado, this thing is awesome! Almost half of Finland is tundra anyway, so you only go there for hiking/skiing etc. 😁 Thanks again and eagerly waiting for the next one!
Thanks for the test, Kyle! It gets about the range mine gets. Its a great car, but a little short on the range. I like mine a lot, but am looking to replace it with a BMW i4 which I believe will get a bit more range. But for occasional trips and local driving its hard to beat.
364 Wh/mi = 226Wh/km for the Europeans watching, and it sounds much better in metric! Great test - you & Bjørn are my go-to EV channels. Looks like a comfy & practical, quality car for daily driving with home charging. Really nice animal-free upholstery & good Harmon Kardon hi-fi. Great headlights. And it looks really nice. For long trips you'd need some route planning for charging of course - I'm in the UK which has really, really poor rapid charging infrastructure away from the cities. The charging characteristics (& range) let it down somewhat I think, but only for road trips. This is on my shortlist (along with its cousin the Polestar 2) as a home-charge daily, medium suv with awd. For a bit more money, via the options list, I also like the Mercedes EQA 350 & Audi Q4 50.
I'm curious when the error happened when charging did you unplug and plug back in? Were there any extra steps like turning the car off and on to get it to cover successfully?
Trying to remember exactly, but one range test at 80 mph got only 120 miles of range, but another one at 55 mph got 250 miles. Or something like that. Zowie! Because of it's boxy upright stance, air resistance really affects the range. But 70 mph is what I want to know. Good video as usual. ...... My wife would already have one if it had a white interior. Maybe next year? ..... edit; Found it! Chris Rifaa got 240 miles at 55 mph, converted from metric of course.. ua-cam.com/video/lqTSMUS5JTc/v-deo.html..
Thanks for the overview! Glad to see a premium feel, good looking option! I also love this platform, drove this, the polestar 2 and they are definitely my favorite EVs to drive. Range is expected and for me it’s plenty - with at home charging and even long weekend trips, my family rarely goes over 200 miles at once, plus I like to stop every few hours. But I know everyone’s situation and tastes are different, just excited to see options!
Awesome test! I do wonder how much extra range you can eke out with the 19" wheels. I heard Canada had that as an option on the top trim, but in the US it looked like it defaulted to the 20s for Ultimate when we ordered it (hopefully May delivery). Still plenty for daily driving, and just means some extra snack stops during road trips 😁
We have one, but it has been in the shop for over a month waiting on a new on-board charger from China. Super frustrating. Dealer had a hand full of others sitting on the lot waiting on the defective part. The new one we are told wont have the same prob. Basically it won't charge L1 or L2. Only DC fast. Just started to happen out of the blue. If I wasn't close to home, would of been stranded. Nice ride besides this blip.
Would the XC40 Recharge be ok for a 140 commute round trip daily to work? I have Level 2 charger at home to juice it up at night... But for the price...Should I keep my Tesla reservation?
How do you handle a Volvo xc40 owner who leaves their car plugged into the only L2 free charger available in a 30 mile radius for 24 + hours? It locks onto the charger and other users are locked out of using the charger even though the Volvo is fully charged?
Im almost certain you're not supposed to charge electric cars all the way up to 100% on a regular basis. Same thing goes for depleting the batteries. Have read that keeping your batteries charged between 20%-80% is the best way to prolong the lifecycle of these electric cars.
Oddly, even when Volvo tells you a higher speed on the speedometer the odometer tends to remain accurate. No idea why that is, but it's just one of Volvo's many quirks.
So like ~50 miles less than EV6? not bad considering your EV6 was RWD and XC40 is AWD. Much better than I would have thought. I am highly considering the C40, mostly for aesthetic. Range was definitely a concern of mine but in the real world it seems only Tesla is leaps and bounds above the rest. Great video
I love the design, but it's not efficient and it's too expensive. I'd rather go for the Q4 at this price. Also the ID4 AWD is about 10k less. Also the DI4 gets a 5k dollar rebate up here in Canada. I think Volvo needs to bring our a 300hp version of this, or just come out with the Polestar 3 which will have a dedicated EV chassis.
Not a lot of people need 400hp. In the ICE world you would expect it to be a gas pig so a 200 mile range would be the equivalent. I wonder how a 250-300hp version would fair.
@@brycelarsen1224 ah like the Polestar 2 setup. But I live in Canada, & AWD helps a lot. That’s quite a gap in power between 400 & 231hp. I test drove a RWD ID4 and it was kind of wimpy. And then I tested the AWD version & it was a much better fit for its weight. I also tested an Ioniq 5 AWD and that was very frisky.
@@bikergeekgd Drive the Tesla and the Mache and then drive the volvo. There is simply no comparison in terms of build quality. The Tesla is a burner phone with 4 wheels and the Mach E is every bit a Ford. The Volvo outclasses them on all levels, except range.
The way the battery pack power back may produce an unsafe condition if one needs to accelerate for an emergency avoidance. At 210+ miles of range it’s OK for city driving, but I don’t think I would chance a road trip with it without knowing more about the charging curve. It would be nice to understand how many miles of range between 80 to 20% charge level. The back doors look small for easy entry by adults, but that’s from a quick video shot of such. What’s the towing capacity. Any “frunk” storage?
That turn to highway on ua-cam.com/video/BKK9BLuxy70/v-deo.html (13:14) is crazy for us non-americans. Would never know that was a lane for me and not oncoming cars.
I had same question. Dealers confirm they have lost sales due to limited seat options, BUT pointed out there’s an option to put a leather seat kit in. He has done this on his car. Quality superior to my BMW 335i seats, looks great. He is getting a quote for me.
