    This song is Robert's growing sarcastic cynicism with the LA cocaine/drug scene and the rock scene in general. You can hear the weariness in his voice. He said it was a dig at someone he knew and cared about and how she was getting deeper and deeper into drugs. It's in the lyrics; "And she said, 'Don't you want it, don't you want cocaine, cocaine, cocaine?'" and later in the song when he sings "On the balance of a crystal, paying through your nose." you can hear a loud snorting sound. As I said, this is a very intense album where the cracks of dissatisfaction and disillusionment are really showing through.

    • @helenespaulding7562
      @helenespaulding7562 11 місяців тому +13

      Spot on. Of course. 😘👋. And more than a little pissed off with Jimmy and his drug use, and the crunch of the contractual deadline they were under. Robert was not in a good place by then for allot reasons. I think the beginning of his emotional distancing from Zeppelin as an “affair of the heart” as he put it years later.

    • @antarcticorb9197
      @antarcticorb9197 11 місяців тому +7

      Also, there is something intensely real about their exhausted feel that emanates from this song. In other words, they're so emotionally spent from their own personal trials yet they manage to knock this out and raise their musicianship to another level. Immense respect!

    Presence is right behind Physical Graffiti in my favorites list. Each song is unique, perfectly structured and performed. Great use of space. Next song, Royal Orleans, uses it nicely as well. Page's use of the whammy bar in the rhythm and lead creates great tension and energy. Also note that the bend and stretch of Page's guitar is echoed in Plant's vocals. These songs are evidence of the continued growth and mastery of the band in their playing and song writing. The four masters strike again, hard.

      Since this is your first time ever hearing this song, I *have* to recommend at least one serious listen to the entire "Presence" album-- ideally, in one sitting, first track to last. "Presence" is not one of the most popular Zeppelin albums, but it has some of Page's and Bonham's greatest playing, and JPJ is on fire throughout the album too. "Nobody's Fault But Mine" is thunderous, and "Tea for One" is a great, haunting, slow blues song that is one of the lesser-known gems in the Zep catalogue.

    The appreciation you guys show for the songs generally and specific parts of the songs specifically is wonderful. I've listed at Zeppelin since the mid-80s when I was a teenager and discovered their music through a friend.
    I went though a long period of exploring other music, but now that I'm in my 50s, in a way I've rediscovered their music, and today, I hear it differently. I'm able to appreciate it more for the truly masterful musicianship, and the UA-cam reaction videos have further helped me love them more deeply by seeing other adults discover them and immediately catch on to what was special about them. Using words like "the best" is a very loaded and is subjective, but if I were pressed, I'd have to agree that they were certainly endlessly creative, always evolved in their sound, consistently surprising and dynamic...and had "band" sound. So....yes...maybe they were the best band.
    Led Zeppelin was a band in the most true sense. Each were masters of their instruments, but together they were magic. Not one single person could be replaced without changing everything that made them special. Keep going through the albums. You have lots and lots of more gems to unearth.

    You guys are just so fun to watch and listen to! As I said in another comment, you get the little things, the nuances that add up to greatness. And I just love how you have been celebrating how amazingly versatile Led Zeppelin was. I remember standing in line at a record store in Houston, that stretched around the block, to get this album when it dropped. And when they came to Houston for their tour, fans overwhelmed all the ticket outlets and they brought firetrucks to spray the crowd and stop them destroying the record stores (who sold most concert tickets then, just as Ticket Master was getting big) but they couldn't stop disappointed fans from trashing them because the tickets sold out in two hours. TV stations were freaking out and the mayor even commented about the radical young rock fans needing to be contained. And they literally destroyed several Tower Records stores in Houston and other cities-- I never made the connection or thought about it, but that may be why record stores stopped selling concert tickets and let Ticket Master take over! Ahhhh, good times! You guys keep up the good work you're doing! I love you guys! You were born to do this!

    JPJ and Bonzo are steady but in my personal opinion this song is carried by Pagey's guitar playing and the layers of guitars he added during his mixing of the album...as a matter of fact this entire album showcases Jimmy's prowess on the guitar and this is definitely a guitar album
