As an amateur, just for fun historian. I have the luxury to explore the parts of history that interest me. This series has filled a lot of gaps in my knowledge and understanding of the Tudor dynasty. Thank you.
I always thought Anne being (divorced) should have been listed differently. She went on to live her life in wealth and unbothered. I suppose not going back to Germany may have bothered her but still...
catherine howard was executed for being 'unfaithful' when she was actually groomed and taken advantage of by older men when she was a child. anne boleyn was executed for challenging cromwell's place in government. it's heartbreaking and neither of them deserved what they got
Anne B was executed for only one reason . She failed to produce the Kings desired son , and was almost 30. For young Catherine Howard , who lived in an age where women were married at 12 and pregnant at 13 , it was a pity that The Dowager Duchess of Norfolk was given such a great responsibility which she failed miserably . Howard had little education for the niece of a Duke and was of limited intelligence, believing that Henry 8 was God. Truly sad but not groomed. She was active sexually with a man she called husband b4 coming to court. The men you suggest groomed her ( in the 16th century when this idea was ludicrous) were executed , and one drawn and quartered.

For the safety and health of women and babies (a 12 or 13 year old cannot safely carry a child to term) women were usually not married until 16 and on the rare occasion that they were (usually for political reasons), it was expected that their husbands would not touch them until 16. Catherine WAS groomed by her music instructor at the age of thirteen. The man was not only her teacher, but he was in his 30s. Her diaries show that he consistently tried to pressure her into sex and bragged to the other servants in the house that he was going to steal her maidenhead. If you need anymore proof that this man was trash, once she became queen he used their previous interactions to blackmail her into giving him a position in Henry's castle. Just because societal norms during the Tudor era were different from ours, does not mean that the psychological impact of child grooming and sexual abuse were not felt by young girls back then, and it CERTAINLY does not mean that the power dynamic between a 30 year old man (a teacher) and a 14 year old (his student) no longer exists. On top of which, Mannox, the teacher who groomed Catherine, was the only person to escape being executed. He abused his student, blackmailed her and then got away scot free.

I think too women didn't matter as much. Daughters didn't matter as much. Children often died young. A lot of times they would use the same names for siblings. Like every daughter that was born they would name after one who had died.
I'm a history buff and have to give you credit for finding new facts so I always learn a little more watching these, and I like how you account for and re-evaluate everything I've already heard. Very thorough bios!

Henry VIII wasn't exactly a saint, either. It was commonplace for a man to cheat on his wife. If Elizabeth hadn't been a princess, no one would have cared.
I have always been fascinated about the six wives of Henry VIII especially in their character. It's refreshing to have the six wives being "humanized" in their documentaries. Catherine did marry Thomas Seymore after Henry VIII died. She survived Henry VIII by one year.
Lucky she found out before it was too late, and she was marched off to prison. Anne Boleyn didn't even know what she was accused of for quite some time while she puzzled over it in the Tower. Her agonized self doubts during that time were used against her, because she was spyed on.
Catherine Parr may have been older than four of Henry's previous wives, as he had a penchant for young girls, but that hardly makes her closer to his age 🙈 there's still more than twenty years age gap.

Catherine Parr was lucky that she found out days before it was made official, and she still had a chance at access. How sad that she fell for the scheming power hungry Thomas Seymour who left a stain on her character and that she died leaving her baby at the mercy of others and that her child died so young. 😢
Agnes Howard is an ancestor of mine and absolutely fascinating. I have researched her and she seems to have been a nice woman, but shockingly bad at discipline in her household. Her home was notoriously lax and they mostly threw parties, rather than engaged in scholarly pursuits. She nearly lost her head because Catherine Howard was deflowered in her care. Her younger daughter, another Katherine (another ancestor, which is the only reason I know about her), was also almost executed by Henry because her Welsh husband rebelled against him (he was put to death) and she raised her husband's tenants in rebellion after his capture. Her powerful family managed to hush it up and get her remarried. Then Katherine had the courage to demand an annulment from her second husband (the Earl of Bridgewater) because he was violent. She bothered Henry so often, he finally agreed. Agnes and Katherine actually lived together and were very close. Katherine also warned her half-brother not to put Catherine forward as a royal bride, knowing full well she was probably not a maid. The 3rd Duke of Norfolk was a bit dense when it came to these things and two of his nieces were put to death by the same man. Catherine Parr and her mother were very astute ladies and learned from the Howards on what NOT to do. Consequently, they were better politicians in a turbulent court.
Very informative, she is one of Henry’s wives that I knew little about since I just didn’t think she would very interesting compared to Anne Boleyn or Catherine Howard. But found this fascinating despite my hesitation going on. I was aware of her & the goings on with her husband and young Elizabeth. Can’t imagine she’d have condoned it let alone joined in. Very odd so I can agree I think she sent her away to make it stop.
While I like Anne of Cleaves, I have always been impressed by Katherine Parre's willingness to forego her own desires and dedicate herself to Henry VIII in his last years. I know she saw it as G-d's will, but she seemed happily to take on what Anne of Cleaves remarked as her burden. I don't think that Anne was being catty. She had lived with Henry for six month and was well aware of how difficult he could be. Katherine P could have ended up as another executed wife, but had the wisdom and tact to placate Henry. I think the she and Anne of Cleaver were very alike in this respect. While Catherine A survived her marriage to Henry, there was much anger and hurt present. With Anne of Cleaves, she was able to leave the marriage with, not only financial security, but also with Henry's good will.
She was never in any real physical danger, only at risk of being placed under restrictions to her freedom of movement. The fact that she was allowed to talk to the king proves that. The others got the boot or the axe because they either failed to produce sons or the king had a new love interest. By the time Parr came around that was no longer an issue. Her immediate predecessor got the axe because she was immature and fooling around, and while a king could do that, a queen consort absolutely could not.
I think Anne of cleaves and Catherine Parr came out the best from Henry’s wives and survived because they submitted to Henry’s will or placate him and did not challenge him and his authority publicly. Anne of Cleaves did not contest the annulment of their marriage as Catherine of Aragon did( mind you in fairness Catherine was also fighting for her daughter Mary’s future right to be recognised as Henry’s legal and legitimate heir) Anne was savvy enough to accept the divorce , not challenge Henry on it and concentrate negotiated a good divorce settlement instead( Tudor survival lesson 101 do what king Henry wants unchallenged and you may survive and not be banished or beheaded) . Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr were both highly intelligent and well educated Catherine Parr was able to avoid the same fate of Anne Boleyn due to keeping a cool head and doing some smooth talking making a show of submission to Henry and promising to be a good Submissive wife in the future which the more outspoken and impulsive Anne B didn’t or wasn’t able to do . Catherine had the advantage of knowing what happened to Anne B and was able to see the danger she was in if she didn’t act quickly .
Women in those times, I think, had to try very hard to be extremely careful in how they acted, what they said, and in what tone of voice they spoke, especially to a man who had been known to carelessly toss aside or callously order them to be put to death painfully, if he had a whim to do so. If a woman had a strong self-preservation instinct, she would probably try to muster up all her acting talent and even lie to keep such a man happy with her, because if she was a realist, she would understand he would not hesitate to plot her demise, if he thought it in any way benefited him.
Awesome as always. I did notice a slight mistake - Thomas Wriothesley was listed as dying in 1534, and if true, he would not have been part of the plan to bring about Catherine Parr's demise. Double-checking, he passed in 1550. (Thank goodness for Catherine's quick wit and eloquence. She truly was a superb lady on all fronts.)
Thomas Seymour was very ambitious and it is said that he attempted to draw Elizabeth towards him while she was still quite young. Catherine Parr was his next object after Henry died.
My last name is Parr, and I'm told relative of this noble woman. This was a fascinating look into the life of her. That is late stage to have born a first child. The mystery of whether or not Mary Seymor lived past the age of 2 is intriguing.
This was excellent documentary. I’ve been doing more research on Katherine Parr as when doing my genealogy that her sister Anne is my great (x10 or 11th) grandmother. I so would like to visit her final burial site. I know her corpse was treated horribly but finally given final rest. I truly believe she loved King Henry VIII & was not even allowed to see him the last few months of his life. I’m so proud of her abilities & especially publishing her works in her own name. Just wish Katherine would have survived to raise her daughter Mary. Thanks for the video !!!
Very interesting. Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves seem to be the most overlooked of Henry's wives, and there is so much interesting information of all the different people being interwoven - Parr named after Katherine of Aragon, even? I knew very little of Parr, and she seemed to have been a very interesting and respectable woman, but had a sad end regardless.
I never knew that Catherine Parr was the one that shaped Elizabeth the queen the most how interesting this on known fact comes to light you always find the most unusual things that no one else mentions excellent thank you 🙏🤩👑💌
This is what gets me. How did Thomas Seymour’s fall under Catherine’s radar? Catherine was known to be a loving and protective stepmother and Elizabeth was said to be her favorite so what the heck happened?
Probably nothing. They were stories, likely exagerated, especially after Seymour ended up on the chopping block. My guess is that it was gossip passed around to reduce his reputation prior to execution. Neither Catherine nor Elizabeth apparently thought he was doing something bad, and you would think they would know. The stories came from servants and only after he was arrested for treason, so they are suspect for that reason.
Great history of catherine parr I enjoyed it can't wait to see more of your live history videos soon. It's very educational I think catherine parr was a very smart educated woman and a great step mother to her step children. 😀 😀
Well, just so people are aware …. Katherine Parr does have ancestors. Her mother Maud had 2 other children that produced children. Her daughter Anne Parr Herbert is my 10th or 11th great grandmother. Katherine would be our great # ? Aunt which makes her family. I’ve been doing plenty of research & have documentation. So @Roxy.heartless would love to hear from you sometime …. Cousins of some kind!!!

She was a terrible wife, lol. She was actually a lot like Princess Di, except in her case her husband was actually in love with her but she did not care. The only things she cared about was her appearance and presentation I felt sorry for Franz Joseph, he definitely pulled the short straw when he fell for her. IMO he would have been way better off with Helene, who was the sister they originally set up for him. But he went for the pretty one instead.
So much has been said about Henry’s wives, how about some profiles on the lesser known Queen’s ? Anne of Denmark, the Georgian consorts……. Would be fascinating !!
what gets me about these programmes is it is áll english monarchy what about the Scots. we had 6 james'. there were williams, roberts, Dávid, etc but never ever covered by historians. a Scottish princess married into Hungárian royal family, or was it other way round? Margaret of norway who died on her way to marry Scottish king and died at north of Scotland. the dowry was the Orkney and Shetland island's with proviso they cld be bought back later. So much history in Scotland too, u know.
I hold very few women to be of admirable repute, but Catherine Parr has always been one of my chosen. (Mathilda and Margaret Beaufort are in the same company). To this day, I damn the filthy medical doctors of the Renaissance who ignored the procedures of all their predecesors from Galen and Maimonedes down through and including rural midwifes operating with antiseptic herbs, clean water, fresh air and a basic non -foetidness of surroundings.
What makes you think any of them would have cared about your good opinion? Women died of childbed fever during Galen and Maimonedes' time, too. No one knew how to make anything sterile, and there were no antibiotics.
History has risen her time as King Henry Vllll’s time to reinstating his daughters as legitimate children and becoming more of a family unit again before the Kings death. She had a definite bond with Elizabeth and after finding her next husband in a compromising situation with Elizabeth she was deeply hurt. I feel she placed most of the blame on Seymour’s head. But also got angerly hurt at Elizabeth to get her removed from her husbands clutches . Elizabeth was not worldly enough at the tome to handle this situation and Parr knew it. Thomas Seymour ruined his life in the end..

I heard in other docs that Thomas Seymore met Catherine Parr after she was widowed for the second time they fell in love then Henry wanted her so she was forced to marry him.
She was not only a beautiful woman but a wise woman she survived Henry VIII by her brilliance, her brains. This is a time when women were regarded as chattel.
I'm nowhere an expert on all of the KINGS WIVES UT I think his first wife Queen Catherine of Aragon was a very tough act to follow as she was very Fiesta in her own right !!

As if women didn't use marriage for social climbing far more often than men. No one important married for love in those days. It was all about economics and political alliances for the wealthy. Women expected their husbands to cheat on them, especially while pregnant. If Seymour had chosen a servant for an affair, it would not have mattered.

I have been fascinated and inspired by how intelligent she was and the fact she was an author!
Women were always intelligent. They just didn't get a chance at an education, but neither did men of low rank.
And an enthusiastic protestant.

Seems like almost every Tudor woman was named Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, Jane, or Margaret.
Haha it's true even today! Got a family member with each of those names! I guess English people have progressed much in names in 500 years

It was ‘respectful’ to name your child after royalty. Don’t forget two generations earlier all three York brothers had Edward as their eldest son.

Women in those times, I think, had to try very hard to be extremely careful in how they acted, what they said, and in what tone of voice they spoke, especially to a man who had been known to carelessly toss aside or callously order them to be put to death painfully, if he had a whim to do so. If a woman had a strong self-preservation instinct, she would probably try to muster up all her acting talent and even lie to keep such a man happy with her, because if she was a realist, she would understand he would not hesitate to plot her demise, if he thought it in any way benefited him.
Awesome as always. I did notice a slight mistake - Thomas Wriothesley was listed as dying in 1534, and if true, he would not have been part of the plan to bring about Catherine Parr's demise. Double-checking, he passed in 1550. (Thank goodness for Catherine's quick wit and eloquence. She truly was a superb lady on all fronts.)
He personally tortured Anne Askew, the Protestant activist who was linked closely to Catherine.

Thomas Seymour was very ambitious and it is said that he attempted to draw Elizabeth towards him while she was still quite young. Catherine Parr was his next object after Henry died.

My last name is Parr, and I'm told relative of this noble woman. This was a fascinating look into the life of her. That is late stage to have born a first child. The mystery of whether or not Mary Seymor lived past the age of 2 is intriguing.

This was excellent documentary. I’ve been doing more research on Katherine Parr as when doing my genealogy that her sister Anne is my great (x10 or 11th) grandmother. I so would like to visit her final burial site. I know her corpse was treated horribly but finally given final rest. I truly believe she loved King Henry VIII & was not even allowed to see him the last few months of his life. I’m so proud of her abilities & especially publishing her works in her own name. Just wish Katherine would have survived to raise her daughter Mary. Thanks for the video !!!

Very interesting. Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves seem to be the most overlooked of Henry's wives, and there is so much interesting information of all the different people being interwoven - Parr named after Katherine of Aragon, even?
I knew very little of Parr, and she seemed to have been a very interesting and respectable woman, but had a sad end regardless.

This is what gets me. How did Thomas Seymour’s fall under Catherine’s radar? Catherine was known to be a loving and protective stepmother and Elizabeth was said to be her favorite so what the heck happened?
Love is blind and so is ambition. Katherine suffered from the former, Thomas from the latter.
Probably nothing. They were stories, likely exagerated, especially after Seymour ended up on the chopping block. My guess is that it was gossip passed around to reduce his reputation prior to execution. Neither Catherine nor Elizabeth apparently thought he was doing something bad, and you would think they would know. The stories came from servants and only after he was arrested for treason, so they are suspect for that reason.

Well, just so people are aware …. Katherine Parr does have ancestors. Her mother Maud had 2 other children that produced children. Her daughter Anne Parr Herbert is my 10th or 11th great grandmother. Katherine would be our great # ? Aunt which makes her family. I’ve been doing plenty of research & have documentation. So @Roxy.heartless would love to hear from you sometime …. Cousins of some kind!!!

She was a terrible wife, lol. She was actually a lot like Princess Di, except in her case her husband was actually in love with her but she did not care. The only things she cared about was her appearance and presentation
I felt sorry for Franz Joseph, he definitely pulled the short straw when he fell for her. IMO he would have been way better off with Helene, who was the sister they originally set up for him. But he went for the pretty one instead.

It depends on what you find fascinating. That would mostly be about their parentage, the children they had, etc.
what gets me about these programmes is it is áll english monarchy what about the Scots. we had 6 james'. there were williams, roberts, Dávid, etc but never ever covered by historians. a Scottish princess married into Hungárian royal family, or was it other way round? Margaret of norway who died on her way to marry Scottish king and died at north of Scotland. the dowry was the Orkney and Shetland island's with proviso they cld be bought back later. So much history in Scotland too, u know.

I hold very few women to be of admirable repute, but Catherine Parr has always been one of my chosen. (Mathilda and Margaret Beaufort are in the same company). To this day, I damn the filthy medical doctors of the Renaissance who ignored the procedures of all their predecesors from Galen and Maimonedes down through and including rural midwifes operating with antiseptic herbs, clean water, fresh air and a basic non -foetidness of surroundings.
Katherine of Aragon was a badass as well.
What makes you think any of them would have cared about your good opinion? Women died of childbed fever during Galen and Maimonedes' time, too. No one knew how to make anything sterile, and there were no antibiotics.

History has risen her time as King Henry Vllll’s time to reinstating his daughters as legitimate children and becoming more of a family unit again before the Kings death. She had a definite bond with Elizabeth and after finding her next husband in a compromising situation with Elizabeth she was deeply hurt. I feel she placed most of the blame on Seymour’s head. But also got angerly hurt at Elizabeth to get her removed from her husbands clutches . Elizabeth was not worldly enough at the tome to handle this situation and Parr knew it. Thomas Seymour ruined his life in the end..
Kateryn Parr was a truly amazing and intelligent woman, who was also very influential in the vast learning of Queen Jane Grey.

The snake that she had as a father did nothing to help. He came within a cats whisker to totally ruining Elizabeth’s reputation. Nit much good that one csn speak of him I’d there. He was all out only for Thomas and what he could get for himself. Power. Sadly, though I think she loved him, I only think he married her because she was the widow of Henry snd therefore close to Henry. Their was a dreadful contest between those Seymour brothers. Well of course, Romance is a scam.
As if women didn't use marriage for social climbing far more often than men. No one important married for love in those days. It was all about economics and political alliances for the wealthy. Women expected their husbands to cheat on them, especially while pregnant. If Seymour had chosen a servant for an affair, it would not have mattered.
