Yeah the seleucids have one of the strongest unit roster in the game!
@@marecup2911 might not be the strongest (albeit I won't accept anything lower than 3'rd place) but it is the most diverse, from very good phalanxes to chariots legionnaires and even elephants. The only place the faction is not very good in is missiles and even then they're not that bad there
Seleucids should be no lower than 2. Elephants, legionnaires, and Cataphracts. Leaving them out is a huge error or oversight.
probably an oversight as idk how they can be looked at and not be anything less than 2nd. The romans and seleucids are easily the best by a large distance.
Idk, maybe spending the entire campaign using militia hoplites is more enjoyable (,useful do the job well and very cheap) than using those 3.

I thought the Seleucids would be up there because of their mix of Greek phalanxes ,Parthian horsemen, and Carthaginian elephants .
No Seleucids?! Come on they have everything: They have Macedon's pikes and cavalry, Carthage's elephants, plus chariots and cataphracts and legionaries!
Seleucid empire 😪 they are like the greeks and macedons but have also elephants and catafracts.(i know i spelt it wrong). And i know this is just your opion.

Not really like the Greeks, the Greeks are special because of their high quality phalanx, Macedon and Arc Seleukeia just don't have that, but those chariots you didnt mention

Interesting how all but one of those have phalanx formations.
Tbh for me the britons are op cuz they have chariots which u can use to lower the enemy's morale,charge them from the front with ur infantry/cavalry/other units in general(I like using warbands for this),and then charge them from behind with the chariots.They also have a higher morale than egyptian chariots and other non-barbarian nations in general,so they won't flee as often(I've tested this,and a single unit of warbands was able to beat 1 unit of pharaoh's guards.Now THAT'S impressive!Their chariots are also especially great on low unit scale,cuz I basically conquered the entire world using only chariots lol.Also because they get them,and can recruit them faster than egyptians.They also,unlike the egyptians,get the ones that can shoot first,whereas the egyptians get the melee ones first.They also have way better morale aswell.)
@@Ugh718 I never really liked using chariots, and I always play on huge unit scale to negate wall defenses a bit.
@@tomh4754 Silver Shileds are weaker by 3 defensive point compared to Royal Pikemens, that's why I said "almost Macedon" because their phalanx is slightly weaker than Makedon's. Not significantly, but the difference still exist.
But Golling might be right that I love phalanx too much :D It's mechanic in this game I think just ridiculously OP kills chariots, elephants and cavalry almost instantly
@@golling3334 Oh ok then.I guess.I also forgot to mention that the britons barbarian warlord(which is a chariot unit,obviously)was able to beat armoured elephants.ARMOURED ELEPHANTS.ON VERY HARD.In a custom battle.I wasn't really all that surprised tho,as they are super duper op on low scale.Like,legit the strongest single unit in the game at low scale.Even stronger than the egyptian chariot generals,since there's more of them,and they have stronger morale.Just saying tho.Pretty damn good on small scale.

Kind of surprised to see that you forgot about the Seleucid, they have the best cav units (compagnions and cataphracts)good pikes and very good silver legions (and the ele)
I dont play campaigns much but here's my list
#5 - Germania/Gaul I feel like are very underappreciated in this
#4 - Britannia/Egypt for ez chainrouts
#3 - Greeks because hoplites with upgrades dont break as easily as pikemen and are pretty decent
#2 - Seleucids for great inf + cav
#1 - Rome because obviously
Germania's roster is really underappreciated
They get a decent phalanx unit at the start
They get some of the best shock troops (berserkers and night raiders) armor piercing infantry (chosen axemen), missiles (chosen archers) and cav (gothic cav)
Spain is better than Germania

I personally prefer hybrid factions over factions with a defined niche. Pontus, Armenia, and Thrace are all some of my favorites for this reason alone.
Seleucids are the best for that classification!

Someone else who liked playing Thrace :0 I loved combining phalanx lines with falxmen and bastarnae, and not just for flanking. You could recreate pike and shot/renaissance warfare by using them like doppelsoldners then moving into the chaos with the phalanxes

Seleucids have everything. A combination of a strong silver shield pikemen center, some legionaries for support, elephants in the flanks and companion cavalry is basically unstoppable.

What about the Selucid Empire with their Legionaries, Elephants, Pikes, and cavalry?
I'll have to take your word about the cavalry since I still haven't gone through the reforms in my Let's Play as the Brutii on M/M at the moment. Though, I've definitely won a few battles thanks to having a lot of equites around to hammer weak spots in the enemy line.
Where the hell are the Seleucids ? SECOND place AT LEAST.
I admit to a certain level of "zerg" tactics in Total War. I like factions that have decent to strong low tech, early game units. With such an army, your troops are expendable, so there's no such thing as a Pyrrhic victory, and you can retrain like 9 units per settlement per turn in this game. As much as I love the Seleucids, you have to win the tough early game with their low morale troops. By the time you get their advanced units, you've pretty much already won the campaign. I've never understood why the barbarian factions are so disparaged. Having top of the line units available at a tier 3 settlement is a huge advantage.
I know how to resolve the disagreement between MELKOR and almost everyone who commented below: how about we petition him to do a series of multiplayer battles with members of the audience where he is the Greek Cities and his opponent is the Seleucids, and just...see what happens! [Maniacal laugh]
Oh, and require a minimum of four non-general cavalry units per side so he can demonstrate the "decent" Greek cavalry everyone's been asking about. :D
It's okay, MELKOR. We wouldn't be here if we didn't appreciate the content you continue to deliver on what is probably the most beloved game in the entire Total War series. :)
I'd love to see a video on how to properly use unique units in M2TW that seem weak if just thrown in. Dismounted Imperial Knights (hre) and Venetian Heavy Infantry are examples that don't seem to fight as well as their stats would indicate
Btw, it’s pronounced “Poy-ni.” Like “boy” with a P instead of a B and ni like the Knights who say “Ni” from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Another phonetic pronunciation would be “Poi-nee” like “Boi” and “bee.” Just wanted you to know so you could pronounce it better for next time.

Hello Melkor, on what setup are you playing the game? How did you fix the lag issue if you had it? I cant fix it and I'm stuck around 25 fps.
I agree with many here. Seleucids being absent entirely, even from Honorable Mention, is a glaring error. They should be at least number 3.

I feel like the Seleucids are #1, they have strong pikemen, they get silver shield legionaries, they have decent archers, strong cavalry, and access to armoured elephants. But that's just me.
Their archers are not elite and this is their greatest weakness. Also no cav archers.
Second place for Seleucids. They have an amazing roster, but the Romans just OP units.

I would put Pontus as number 2
- Sarissa Phalanx
- Pontic Light Cavalry (ranged attack AND good in melee)
- (Scythed) Chariots
- Cataphracts
- Onagers
- strong General's bodyguard
they have access to pretty much everything

Personally, I found that the post-Marian Roman Army's only real issue is no pikemen, but they don't really need them since any cavalry army that charges you should be eating quite a bit of artillery and ranged before they get into pila range. Archer Auxilia I found to be a very capable missile unit for my needs - Cretan Archers may have them beat in stats (been a while since I played so I'm not sure), but at least Archer Auxilia can be trained anywhere with a sufficiently high tier ranged building and don't have the mercenary price hike.
Though I personally like the Seleucid roster the best just because it has good options for everything and in enough power for what I need - the main issue is that their campaign is pretty poor because their low tier units are just not that good for the situation they face - Militia Hoplites are some of the best garrison units in the game for very good reason (cheap, you can nullify their weakness to being flanked by urban positioning, easy to train), but the issue is that letting the enemy siege you means that you're losing valuable turns that you need to tech up because bluntly put, the Seleucid roster is a late-game roster. Doesn't matter in custom battles, but it's quite a noticable pain in campaign.

Why no love for the horse archers? you say it's not your style, respectable- i turned onto them after learning only alexander was able to beat horse archer armies by using a mix of units in his battle with "scythia"-- his general lost the battle without alexander. does it feel cheap? just a penchant for infantry?
I really like German's roster because early phalanx is a difference maker at the start of the campaign and they have so many different elite units. From screeching women to Berserks and Gothic cavalry.
phalanx in my mind is the thing that can kill basically anything else in the hands of a player. Germans dont have the morale to stand up to a long gruelling fight against a prepared civilized faction's roster. ill take discipline and armor over courage and rage

Yep, Rome is favourite. Barbarian Invasion is best expansion/DLC. Attila comes 2nd, in my opinion, even though many disagree.
Seleucids are number 1 by far, good infantry, great cavalry, elephants and chariots, missiles are just decent, but so are the roman missiles
2:42 I had not played the Greek City-States for a long time, but as far as I remember, in terms of cavalry they have only Generals and some worthless light cavalry, who are weaker than equities. Am I wrong?
They have Greek cavalry which is a lancer type, super fast so can chase down skirmishers cavalry and a really powerful charge but not any good in prolonged combat

@@williamsouth1847 yeah definitely, if you want a more cavalry centered Greek campaign try the Macedonians. They have actual lancer cavalry which are great for changing the tipping point of battles and are really fun to flank with :D however unlike the Greek city states they have actual heavy cavalry late game
@@retsof_ In reference to your first comment, I believe you are actually thinking of Light Lancers, a Macedonian unit with less staying power. That said, Greek Cavalry doesn't have much of that either, so if you want a Hellenistic faction with good cavalry, you're right--it's Macedon or the Seleucids.
@@jasonlupo4117 Yeah, the Macedonian light lancers have a higher charge bonus so they are more likely to break formations where as the greek cavalry is slower but can take more of a hit :D
Came to represent the Seleucids Empire, and realized the comment section has been conquered by the Seleucids 😂.
Scythia is a faction I like, and one I hate, when playing other factions they can be a threat, but the A.I is beatable, when you play as them you will find that 5 units of the base horse archers can wreck a full army, but the one real issue is armored hoplites, which the Greeks have.
I'm playing Grand campaign with Skythia these days and I love it! At the moment I'm crushing the Bruti Romans in northen Greece and I'm pushing the Macedonians south with the other Greeks.
The trick is to take their sea cities do it this will bankrupt them
@@Venakis1 if you have issues with horser archers just train some dog units they will do the job XD
Agree with the dogs. They're the only unit that give my horse archers trouble because for some reason skirmish mode does nothing. The dogs also don't tire out so the best strategy is to use one light cav unit to run them around the map while dealing with the rest of the army, or use a few infantry or melee cav units on them.

i think pontus has a good roster as well they have pikeman they have chariots they have kataphrakts missile cav etc
4:44 I'm going to nitpick here. 2,000 years before Rome TW's setting would be somewhere between the late Old Kingdom and early Middle Kingdom. Horses were not a thing in Egypt during that time period. The Egyptians didn't even start using chariots until the New Kingdom (c. 1550 - 1069 BC) and mounted cavalry wasn't a thing until the Late Period (c. 664 - 332 BC). The Egyptians in Rome TW resemble something more from the early Iron Age. It's still too early for this game's setting, but not 2,000 years too early ;)
Edit: Pikes and phalanx formations weren't introduced to Egypt until Greek colonisation, which is anachronistic to how the Egyptians are otherwise portrayed, but not for the game's time setting, interestingly. It's a bit of a mess!
i really love dacian roster because dacia unlike other barbarian factions have elite "noble" versions of infantry, cavalry AND archers which makes their armies amazing.
Greeks have decent cav? Them and thrace have THE worst cav in the game, militia cav and greek cav are jokes... also sacred band is way stronger than what u give credit for
The Sacred Band can at times beat the bloody Spartan Hoplites !
I honestly expected Seleucids if you're gonna mention two hellenic factions... Which I would agree with, but would still think it's rather obvious. Germans have phallanxes, screeching women, naked fanatics, gothic cavalry... Brittons have woad warriors, druids, head hurlers and chariots... Thracians have barbarian falxmen, the bastarnae and otherwise are a hellenic faction. In my opinion more interesting than Macedon & Greece, or at least deserved a spot on the list in place of one of those.

Pontus is great too, you have everything in there. Chariots, missile cav, heavy cav, light infantry, pikes etc... I also enjoyed Armenia because of their unique units, they're not the best but a welcome change from the same units you find in many other rosters.
One of my friends playing as the Numidians once defeated me instantly as the Seleucids (camels counter cathaphracts, he had elephants and archers). My infantry routed before engaging.
Then that would be a strike against the Macedonians too. The Seleucids have all of Macedon's best units and more, unless Royal Pikemen are better than Silver Shield Pikemen by so much that they compensate for everything else, which is a hard case to make. Apart from that, Macedon's only superiority in roster is if for some reason you are better served by their earlier cavalry units, but that rarely means much in a custom battle.
Post Marian bad ranged? As far as I can remember the archers out ranged every other ranged unit I fought against. Im a campaign player btw, its important as after a little while ranged units can rack up a lot of experience which can be miss leading. But pretty confident in the fact that they have one if not the longest reach which is more important then damage. Big damage but small range, 1-2 volleys and they are on you, long range open the possiblity to force them on a stand off slaughter as the distance is too long for them try. Works on heavy dif. Too
I wonder why you did not put up Armenia atleast as honourable mention. Phalanx, missle cav, heavy cav, legion troops, archers. You only miss melee light cav, and you have military temple too.
For autoresolves, its Briton all the way. They can get light chariots in earlygame which lets you steamroll over europe.

1. Seleucids. they got basically everything OP you could ever want (besides i guess elite level archers).
2. Romans post Marian. some of the most elite infantry, very good cav and decent missiles.
3. Egypt. OP if you know how to use them and their chariots. better than average archers who wont melt instantly in melee
4. Armenia: everything good about Greeks/Macedon but they got legionaries and catas as well. few things could beat a wall of Catas and Heavy Spearmen
5. Macedon. everything great about the Greeks but longer pikes, actual elite cavalry and decent options early on rather than having to tech up fast like some others, such as Light lancers and Phalanx Pikes
Wheres the seleucids? Legionaries, some of the best pikeman, great archers, great cav. Macedon cant be ranked above because of inferior cav, no elephants, pikeman are almost the same, the royal pikeman aren't that much better, selecids should be at 2nd considering they are better all around only second to the Roman's
I always use Macedonians or Seleucid factions though Pontus have have a pretty decent set up when fully established.
What about pontus and seleucids? They are clearly better than greece or pre-marian rome

Seleucids: defensive phalanxes, flexible legions, heavy cataphracts and morale lowering chariots and elephants. And there are plenty rosters better than pre-marian romans, like the germans, thracians, gauls only because of forester warband and the Spanish only because of bull warriors

Germania was my favourite. Armour ignoring axes, heavy archers, heavy cavalry and phalanx warbands.

Number 5: brutii beacuse roman roster + gladiators
The Scipii have the best gladiators.

I always thought the greek states had terrible cavalry. Macedon has some great cavalry units but greek states just get greek cavalry and skirmisher cav.

Not sure I agree with splitting the Romans into pre- and post-Marian, and I definitely wouldn't put pre-Marian Rome on the list over the Seleucids, Armenians (cataphract archers ftw), Germans (Gothic Cavalry, Berserkers, Chosen axes, and even a phalanx unit), or even Gauls (Forester Warband). As much as I love Macedon, I would probably say 1) Rome, 2) Egypt, 3) Seleucids, 4) Germania, 5) Armenia

LMAO, I love Sycthia mainly because its just funny to watch them destory everything in the known world.
For me the most annoying rosters to play as are barbarians, wich all seem to be the same with minor differences, and some are terribly weak like Spain's roster... Iberian infantry is so trash, weren't they supposed to be brave mercenaries for hannibal IRL instead of pansy cowards?

MOST cavalry eats the Greek Cavalry. Greece is a very hilly place, so Heavy Cavalry wasn't a good idea.

@@Venakis1 Arguably Armenia, with cataphract archers. Heavily armoured and can second as a decent melee cav unit. I can't remember how well the royal Scythian horse archers fare in comparison.

Duuude, I appriciate your work, it's great, but when you speak about something make it somehow in the video too, you've told us about carthage and you show a footage of two romans armies combat or between schytians and egyptians, also on campaign map. Plese fix this, it's very anoying. I don't know if it's a trick to get the attention to listen to smthg, but it is more disruptive...for God sake!
Carthage gameplay got corrupted, so I used the Romans gameplay for that. Currently in process of moving house during a pandemic, everything is all over place in terms of schedule.
Every other faction was fine.
As for campaign, no footage was shown due to video length. Due to the design of Total War, there is no interesting, or useful campaign gameplay I can get when limited to just 10 seconds. Battle gameplay has to come first, given that it is about battles.
I agree, it would have been better with Carthage gameplay as well. But given everything and me doing daily uploads, there's not enough hours in the day to make it possible.
