THIS IS THE END, BEAUTIFUL FRIEND
THIS IS THE END, MY ONLY FRIEND
THE END OF OUR ELABORATE PLANS
THE END OF EV'RYTHING THAT STANDS
    THE END
    NO SAFETY OR SURPRISE
    THE END
I'LL NEVER LOOK INTO YOUR EYES AGAIN
CAN YOU PICTURE WHAT WILL BE
    SO LIMITLESS AND FREE
    DESPERATELY IN NEED OF
    SOME STRANGERS HAND
    IN A DESPERATE LAND
LOST IN A ROMAN WILDERNESS OF PAIN
AND ALL THE CHILDREN ARE INSANE
    ALL THE CHILDREN ARE INSANE
    WAITING FOR THE SUMMER RAIN
THERE'S DANGER ON THE EDGE OF TOWN
    RIDE THE KING'S HIGHWAY
    WEIRD SCENES INSIDE THE GOLDMINE
    RIDE THE HIGHWAY WEST BABY
    RIDE THE SNAKE
    RIDE THE SNAKE
    TO THE LAKE
    TO THE LAKE
    THE ANCIENT LAKE BABY
    THE SNAKE IS LONG
    SEVEN MILES
    RIDE THE SNAKE
    HE'S OLD
    AND HIS SKIN IS COLD
    THE WEST IS THE BEST
    THE WEST IS THE BEST
GET HERE AND WE'LL DO THE REST
THE BLUE BUS IS CALLING US
THE BLUE BUS IS CALLING US
    DRIVER, WHERE YOU TAKING US?
    THE KILLER AWOKE BEFORE DAWN
    HE PUT HIS BOOTS ON
HE TOOK A FACE FROM THE ANCIENT GALLERY
AND HE WALKED ON DOWN THE HALL
HE WENT INTO THE ROOM WHERE HIS SISTER LIVED
AND THEN HE PAID A VISIT TO HIS BROTHER
AND THEN HE WALKED ON DOWN THE HALL
AND HE CAME TO A DOOR
    AND HE LOOKED INSIDE
    FATHER?
    YES SON
    I WANT TO KILL YOU
    MOTHER, I WANT TO
COME ON, BABY, TAKE A CHANCE WITH US
COME ON, BABY, TAKE A CHANCE WITH US
COME ON, BABY, TAKE A CHANCE WITH US
AND MEET ME AT THE BACK OF THE BLUE BUS
THIS IS THE END, BEAUTIFUL FRIEND
THIS IS THE END, MY ONLY FRIEND
    THE END
IT HURTS TO SET YOU FREE
    BUT YOU'LL NEVER FOLLOW ME
THE END OF LAUGHTER AND SOFT LIES
THE END OF NIGHTS WE TRIED TO DIE
    THIS IS THE END
(Belated) Bicycle Day series (Part 1, 8 of 8) Another game changer, this is the last track on The Doors’ 1967 self-titled debut album. While not known to have been written under psychedelic influence, it was famously recorded by vocalist Jim Morrison in the midst of a full-on acid trip. They still got it done dub-free in two takes though, with only one television thrown at the control room glass. Much of the spoken word portion in the middle was first supplied by Morrison in the room. The End was also the last song the band’s original lineup ever played before Morrison’s death, and a remix of it was prominently featured in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now (stills from which are heavily featured in the video here).

Only Jim and the Doors could have produced this. I think that he considered himself a poet more than a rock singer and star. Egotistical, at times obscene and over the top, but a genius, in my opinion.

To me, the heaviest impact of the song was not the Oedipal section, but...the end of the song. Yes. When Jim sang; "This is The End", and stretched that out, it was with such a mournful voice, the mournful voice of losing someone you love....forever.

He was such a poet, he was so high tripping on stage. This before they had a record deal. The band started a groove, the music you hear. Jim stepped up and started ad libbing. When he got to the mother part and said what he wanted to do to his mom. (Fu.k) band was fired power was off, and kicked out. When recording he stuck with his word but Electra put the screaming in.

When listening to the Doors you have to remember that they took their name from Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception and that Jim was more a performance artist than a singer. The band was very much about putting context musically to Jim's lyrics. They were all great musicians, but Jim just took over with a stage presence that could not be denied. Look at their performance live at the Hollywood Bowl and you will see what I mean.

It's a Rhodes Keyboard, synths didn't really exist yet. It's an electric piano. It's one Drummer, One Keys player, One Guitarist, and Jim singing. No bass player. The bass lines were always/usually played by Ray, the keyboardist.

Quite a "transgressive" song back in the day. Nothing else quite like it in '67. The last 3 or so minutes... if you listen again... it's simulating sexual intercourse and climax. Followed by... murder. The "ancient face" the narrator mentions taken from the gallery is that of Oedipus Rex, who is supposed to have killed his father (unknowingly) and married his mother (unknowingly). Hence, the "Oedipus Complex" in psychology. The person in the song kills dad, rapes and kills mom... but knowingly. Sick stuff. But good!

Ray Manzarek tells the story about how this all came about. The band had the basic song "The End" and were playing at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. The band showed up for their first set and Morrison was not there, so they played without him. Morrison arrived and had taken a WHOLE lot of acid. He told the guys, let's do The End. So, right there in the middle of the Whiskey he extemporised the whole middle section. The teeny boppers in the club could not handle this. The club owner basically threw them out. But Bruce Botnick from Electra Records was in the audience and was so impressed he signed them to a record deal.

Interesting how you say "nice bass." And were also wondering about the keyboard. Ray Manzarek played the Vox Continental organ, and sitting on top of the organ was a Fender Rhodes Pianobass. Ray played organ with his right hand and bass with his left hand. In the studio, they used actual (stringed) bass players to augment the bass sound, but in concert, it was just Ray. Also, on this particular recording, it was done 100% live in the studio (no overdubs) and no studio bass player.
This is what Paul Rothchild, the producer, had to say about recording "The End":
"I felt emotionally washed. There were four other people in the control room at that time, when the take was over and we realized the tape was still going. Bruce, the engineer, was completely sucked along into it and instead of sitting there at attention the way engineers are wont to do, his head was on the console and he was just - immersed. Just absolutely immersed in this take. And he’d done it all, and he’d made all the moves right, because Bruce and I had established a kind of rapport, he knew where I wanted things done and when, and when his work was done he did exactly the same thing, involuntarily, without volition, he didn’t know he was going to do it but he became audience too. So the muse did visit the studio that time. And all of us were audience, there was nothing left, the machines knew what to do I guess. It was all right."

A different time. The line "All the children are insane." Is about the protests against the Vietnam war. This is about a man facing that reality, maybe I might be drafted and sent to Vietnam, like when you grew up and faced the Gulf War through your young eyes. But they were all volunteers. The differnce is most of the folks that went to Nam were drafted. The rich and the smart got lucky, all the others were cannon fodder. And when I say smart you had to be real smart or it was basic traning, not OTC, "Officers Traing Corrp".

Travis Meeks (Days of the New) + surviving Doors did another version for the 'Stoned Immaculate' tribute album. John Densmore, the drummer, goes off on the hand drums.

Closing track, first album, 1967. Jim Morrison was a voracious reader, and poet. He was into Artaud's theater of confrontation. He is trying to shock with the Oedipal myth here.

Let's talk a little bit about keyboard technology. The question was asked about what was the keyboard instrument. It was probably a Vox Continental combo organ. He also played the bass with a keyboard with a Fender Rhodes Bass Keyboard. There was no bass guitar player in the band.
It may seem like synthesizers have been around forever, but The End was recorded in late 1966 and released in early 1967, At that time, the few commercially available synthesizers were monophonic. That means they only played one note at a time. You adjusted the sound using dials and slide switches to fiddle with the wave form of the sound wave. They really sounded like synths. You couldn't easily duplicate other instrumental sounds like a modern digital synth. Affordable, commercial polyphonic synths didn't become available until the late 70s.

Thanks for your reaction. The Doors were made up of one lead vocalist (Jim Morrison), organist (Ray Manzarek) who played two organs at the same time. He would play bass notes and organ with a Leslie speaker (way before synthesizers), and guitar (Robbie Krieger). During recordings, they would overlap a bass guitar, and of course a drummer (John Densmore). Please listen to "When the Music's Over" and "L.A. Woman" next.

I don't think there were any synthesizers on this track. The Indian-inspired sounds were created on guitars to create a sitar or veena sound. This is the same guitar technique featured in the music of The Tea Party. The Doors did use an early Moog synthesizer on their next album.

@bustyzlepp_ yes a good point were as Jagger is too much of a fem impersonator . Obviously Ginger Baker and Miles Davis were hard as a rock . McCartney also gets a pass along with Lennon - Bowie doesn't - nor does twat Liam Gallagher but it's a list you usually only become aware of later in life The full list would be quite a thing - epic 😄 Thanks for your Comment !
