    Everything in this fish tank took me forever. The piece of driftwood you see in there was sent from the heavens. While out on Tyler Lake I found this thing and dragged it onto the boat. If you know me, you know I'm all about planted tanks. Aquarium plants are what it's all about. They filter the water and they make you planted aquarium look natural and great.
    Plants need a great foundation, I use a combination of dirt and clay for my planted aquarium substrate. Plants get most of their iron from their roots so it's very important to have a good substrate.

    That 220g is my dream tank, great tank you have there I have a 125g myself, as an aquarium hobbyists for the past 10 years I've seen ups and downs of owning freshwater fish but in the end all that hard work really pays off when you get the fish and the aquarium itself to look the way you want it to

      Sam williams jr aint that the truth!!! heck i had a 40 gallon with a beautiful set of bunch type plant with a whole eco system along with the malasian trumpet snails some shrimp mollies catfish and a pleco with variations in types of fish and age and rams horns at one time. it was wonderful until my pleco showed that he had a ticking time bomb and the whole thing crashed...i got it going up again but it was never the same i worked hard for months to get there!! right now i have a 10 gallon and am working on the plants in it. i have micro pond snails (they stay under 2 cm) some MTS, two blue neon guppies (male female cupple) a blue speckled mickey mouse tail platy (yup a mouth full but hard to find most places shes my girl and shes survived 2 crashes due to desease) and a green lantern platty (apparently hes got the same name as the two males before him thats a 5 year old for you), and will have ghost shrimp soon!! :D the fish are named elsa and olaf (the guppies), pendragon the third and porth (for those that get it yes im a bit of a pern nut) an dthe shrimp will be called the shrimpies (two year old logic) and the MTS are the hoovers and the micro pond snails are the wall scrubbers (or according to porth the bearers of tasty snacks) .....and i use an air powered bio filter with a custom carbon filter pad (made by me i might do a tutorial if i even get my camera to work)added in.yup i probably ramble and can talk tank all day but i will warn people that a 10 gallon tank is soo much harder to get just right than a 40 because your water tends to muck up and build toxins faster while it cycles.

    As cool as a huge tank like that is I would never want one, even if someone gave it to me for free. Such a pain in the ass to clean and a lot more expensive to buy all the equipment, not to mention all the chemicals you need every month.

    • @mattchaber912
      @mattchaber912 10 років тому +2

      I have not used an ounce of any sort of chemical in my 30 gallon tank and its been up for two years stocked with tetras, german rams and filled with live plants. You don't need chemicals in a tank

    • @hattrickster33
      @hattrickster33 10 років тому +1

      Matt Chaber I know a lot of people don't really dose anything because their tap water has enough macros and micros. But if you're using distilled water or have tapwater that has pretty much nothing dissolved in it (like me) you have to add some chemicals. Fish obviously provide 2 of the macros but the rest I have to add otherwise my plants start to die.

    • @mattchaber912
      @mattchaber912 10 років тому

      Be a Man My tap water is perfect for my fish and plants. All I have to do is make sure that the water is more less the same temperature as my tank and everything is fine

    • @timmyvindiesel3889
      @timmyvindiesel3889 10 років тому

      Be a Man if you do a natural planted tank you should need to add anything other than plants at first after about a month or so everything should be cycled just add a bunch of neons or something small with shrimp and snails it will stay clean and produce its own food it will be a completely functioning ecosystem at that size.

    I like the mix of gravel and sand - looks really good. I was going to switch over my 26 gallon from gravel to sand but I might just leave the gravel at the back and sides and do a semi circle of sand in the front instead (will match sand to gravel colour). Thanks for the idea :)

  • @Dustinsfishtanks
    @Dustinsfishtanks  14 років тому

    @ABQ51 thanks for the question. I would just start with 2. Run them 10 hours. Don't waste your money with the built in timer. Just get a cheapo timer. I would buy a double strip regular florescent. Get the "pink" bulbs... any question just ask.

  • @Dustinsfishtanks
    @Dustinsfishtanks  14 років тому

    @oakcrayfish depend on what you are trying to do. I'd personally just use one good florecent and be done, maybe two. (most people who get a ten upgrade typically so don't go wild on a small tank.) imo what kinda plants?

  • @Dustinsfishtanks
    @Dustinsfishtanks  14 років тому

    @FalseShadowx You dont! Go buy a new flora bulb..PINK ONE
    Stick a ball of dirt the size of a flattened golfball under that sword, or a ball of red soft potters clay...something to feed it..

  • @Dustinsfishtanks
    @Dustinsfishtanks  14 років тому

    @FalseShadowx One will work, but you have to get something hardy. Do you have a timer? Is the bulb new and kinda pink looking? 10 hours a day, get some swords...Is it already set up? if not do dirt;)

    Man, that's fantastic. I love rainbowfishes too, I'm trying to make a full melanotaenia tank, but I only have a 250 lt tank! I waited for a year, with the empty tank in my room, to realize my little dream! As you can see, our tales are very similar, except that everything about mine is smaller or shorter! Keep up the good work, I hope to find some glossolepises too!

    Its all about controlling the proteins in your water, so doing water changes and not overfeeding can help, a good skimmer etc. Also, if you have a light you need to make sure that it is only on for 8 hrs and off the rest or algae will bloom. hope that helps

    After the last rinse wait an hour, so most of the ammonia will evaporate. (if you are using tap water) If you are using well water, or any natural water source, then you can skip this step. And voila! It is ready to put into your tank.. With huge rocks from nature, just rinse them for 10-20min with cold/hot water, and scrub them well. You can also boil them, if you have a big enough pot. Go natural! ALMOST NO stores have as beautiful material as you can find in nature.

  • @007gametester
    @007gametester 11 років тому

    If it is in a huge lake or river, I would only rinse it with cold and hot water. But to be sure, the best thing to do is, to dry it out, so NO BACTERIA that lives in that lake/river will survive on it. Just dry it out (3 months for a big log like this is a good measure) after rinsing it properly, and rinse it again, before you put it in your tank. The last rinse should be long, maybe 20 min, with a strong pressure water source with a shower head, so the water gets into all cracks.

    And no offense to you either man but you can't aquascape with a salt tank the skill involved in keeping your expensive beautiful fish alive is an aquired skill for sure but they always look the same to me an aquascape is something of an art form water flow what plants to use and you DO NOT use RO in fresh water planted tanks and I can sneeze near my aquariums without all my expensive four hundred dollar a peice fish dying lol your money not mine. We love green dude marine is not green.

    Nice tank I want a 240 gallon some day. what kind of dirt dirt in your substrate besides clay? Are you running any co2 emitters and what are you cycling a tank that size with? I am all about the plants and my 66 gallon was just desimated by blue green algae so I am starting new one soon and would like to gather as much info my problem earlier was I stepped up to a 66 from a 20 did not have enough oxy in the tank as well as enough plants and I damaged my plants and some fish before I learned that

    hi there, i just recently converted my plastic plants to a planted tank and right now i'm seeing tiny bubbles all over my tank. i'm not sure if my tank need co2 or not because i dont have much plants or fish. only about 11 baby plants and tetras in a 55 gal. do you think i need co2 because its only during at night when i can see it not during the day.

    tank is nice but I dont like your choice of fish
    with such a huge space you really should go with more of a specific schooling fish, mixing them is fine, but I see like 3 minnows on the right and some rainbows doing their own thing
    get like 15+ of something so they put on a show going back and forth

    Awesome tank I love the plants, I only wish I could put real plants in my 150g but I have res turtles and oscars and crayfish which all eat live plants.The log is sexy too.

    I'm thirteen and got a 60 gallon aquarium and went with your advice and used dirt in my tank. Every thing is going fine with the plants ( tons of new growth!!) but my water has been this light brownish yellowish color and it's been like that for 3 weeks. What is it? Is it bad for my fish and how can I clear it? Please help
