How does this old Land Rover Disco compare to the new Discovery? Find out here: ua-cam.com/video/hYDZIDk-X1s/v-deo.html
the new discovery is kind of ugly
i had a disco 1 , great vehicle. tough. please dont play music while talking. its really irritating. Its a car show, want to hear those engines, but cant the sound nerd ruins it.
The Fast Lane Truck ill buy a Lexus LX470'S.... but i wonder how good the x35 infinity are?
Toyota Owner seems intimidated by the Hummer. Wise cracks that dont make sense all video🤔
Disco is crap.
I always loved the discoveries, but I bought an H2. No regrets. Its a comfortable, reliable monster.
Having owned a Discovery, I'm surprised anytime one just starts.
So you havent owned one?
@@4wdsome444 Yes I have. like I said. Any time it started was a surprise. Absolutely worst vehicle I've ever owned.
Probably because it wasn't taken care of properly maintenance wise.
@@craigmackintosh1604 Bough brand new. Trouble from the start. Returned under lemon law. Land Rover has a long and verifiable history of building beautiful garbage.
@Nuclear Grizzly, I'll grant you that but being a Brit who grew up relying on these vehicles for simple survival in Africa I am impartial to them to this day. I love my 2003 D2 but must admit she is heavily modified as an off-road only toy, I have my moments of exasperation but usually short lived due to my love of working and improving upon her.
I would take the hummer because of the reliability.
Yeah, h2 hummers are actually fairly reliable. They have the same 6.0 as the silverado HD.
Sitting in it is like a leather lazy boy
Sweet truck
Land Rovers are definitely cars that make you fall in love with them. Despite the problems that they have. Yes repairs ain't cheap, but they make you smile. They got character, they are comfortable, good on and offroad in stock. They have lots of room for your family of gear.
Land rover all day every day!!! I own a 2002 disco
Same. I absolutely love mine.
Land Rover = The Best 4x4xFar 👍
I would rather have the Land Rover
Aaron Martin TV same
Be sure to have the piston sleeves pinned, head studs added and a few other things. Engines were shit in that generation of Landy.
French Frys same could be said for you landys are my life asshole
Same I have a 97 disco 1
It’s lovely it gets me anywhere and with my new botch starter it never fails to start
I am shopping for a H2 now, thanks🤦♂️
Discovery 1 or 2 forever 💪🏼😉🕺🏻
Crossovers are the biggest turds. Square old suvs are perfect!
With the price for gas here in Germany, I'd take the Disco (as a Diesel) over the Hummer. Maintenance and repair on the Disco is cheaper than what I'd spend on gas for the Hummer.. Not to mention that I could buy 2 Discos (1 to drive and 1 for spare parts) for the price of one Hummer. Last but not least, the Disco has waaaaay more style than the H2.
Sure 💪🏼😉
FLOB32 you are going to need more than 2 of each part.
good thing u live in dutch expenssive land .
I hope next will be the cliffhander 2.0. this was too easy for the trucks.
Diego in japan agreed that looked fairly easy
My cousins 06 h2 has 320k miles on it....granted he replaced the transmission. But its still a beast!!!
Johnathon Castro the 6.0L engines they have are damn near bullet proof along with rest of the 3/4 ton drive train. They just get a bad rap for being big and having less than great fuel mileage. I had a 2000 Silverado 2500 with the same 6.0L engine, 4L80e transmission, 9.5in 14 bolt rear axle and 9.25in front diff and it was an awesome truck. Even with a supercharger and 37in tires it was extremely reliable for how much I beat on it. Lady ran a stop sign and totaled it for me with 215K miles on it.
Drew w
How did she total a tank?
Agent. K. Cost to fix is what totaled it, mostly body damage but broke a front ball joint and tie rod, front wheel, then broke a rear axle U bolt and put the rear tire in the bed side. Rocker panel was crunched from sliding over her hood. Truck did a 180* spin after she hit me. But kept the truck for -$625 out of my totaled payment that I rolled into a new truck down payment. So I still have the truck. Probably could get it driving again for around $1000 if I don’t mess with the body work. but I just haven’t gotten around to fixing it.
currently driving A 201k mile 3/4 ton suburban on 33s , bone stock drivetrain 6.0 with 4l80e , haven't even done the trans yet , in the last month i have done a couple hundred miles on rough off road trails (hunting season). i have a clunking noise coming from the front end but i definitely was beating the snot out of it driving way to fast down some very rocky terrain so thats more of an abuse issue over reliability. also im a die hard GM guy i have probably had 5 suburbans and 3 trucks all GM , expect the transmissions to go out anywhere between 200k and 250k miles. they are ticking time bombs after 200k. but that's pretty much the only thing that will fail you despite how well you take care of the vehicle. prepare to spend $2k for a rebuild. Which is relatively nothing when you consider it will last you another 200k miles.
do yourself a favor , have the trans rebuilt after 200k regardless of how it drives , if you do it on your own schedule it could prevent failure when you least expect it and save you on a huge towing bill. i plan on doing mine soon in my 3/4 ton. would hate for it to go out on a long road trip while towing far away from home.
oh yeah I'd take the Hummer hands down!!
Guess you didn't watch the Moab video
Land Rover. The Best 4x4 By Far!!! Nuf said.
Yeah idk about that chief
My '03 H2 would pull the frame in half on that land rover! 😂
Yup 👍
It all depends on the owners my LR D2 almost has 200k only thing I replaced are alternator
A quick story. A few years ago I decided I needed a daily driver that had more room and was better on the road than my Jeep Rubicon. I wanted a tough 4wd body on frame suv. It needed to be reliable, good off road, good on road, preferably a solid axle and have more room than the Jeep. I hear about these "80 series Land Cruiser things" that are legendary. It came down to a Land Rover Discovery which I had always wanted and the Land Cruiser.
So I'm talking to my local "Land Rover Guy" and he asks me what I'm looking to do with the prospective suv.
I say, "tough, reliable, haul my stuff, take road trips, business trips, go off road. "
He says "so you want it to work all the time?"
I respond, "Yeah..."
He says, "I'd buy an 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser"
I never looked back
Lol exactly ..... Toyota for the win
So your 80 series hasn't had a single part replaced since you bought it? No swivel hub problems, no diff issues?
Well, I'm not sure what you mean by swivel hub so no it hasn't had any problems. No diff issues. Nothing done that wasn't a normal maintenance item.
@@johndean4120 Mine did 500000k on lpg and last I saw it it had been around Australia
John Dean The FJ80 is a much better choice then the Discovery, I'm a Toyota guy, that's virtually all I drive but everybody wants too much money for an 80 series now. You mind if I ask how much you paid for it? P.s. I own an 04 discovery and it's a love hate relationship🤣
I love my '96 D1, I'll keep it over the hummers.
We rescued half the yank army with our defenders when their hummers got frightened by a puddle/tree stump/blade of grass/sand dune/ or anything from mother nature......disco will do everything required....sadly that includes breaking down(alot) give me a sorted Land Rover or Toyota any day.
yep! Driving through Basra in my trusty Defender all we did was laugh at broken down Hummers!
Yeah riiiiiight!!!😂😂🤣😂
@@MrGreatness412 we did! Lance corporal Gav and myself! Got pictures somewhere
LR2 will always beat any american made 4X4 in a hustle! :)
Hey guys, I just bought my first hummer h2... and Im in colorado. Lets get together some time. I could use your HUMMER wisdom
Horses for courses. In the US, the H2 is probably the better buy, with a home market for spares. Here in the UK, that Disco never came with the 4.6 engine, just the 4.0, and 95% of them came out of the factory with the 2.5TD engine, which was way more reliable than the V8. The H2 on the other hand doesn't suit the UK. It's a gas-guzzler and it's too big. It's full of cheap plastic whereas the Disco has a lot more leather. Those sort of things matter here. If the same comparison had been done here, it would have been done on a proper off-road track, and the Disco would have been the one getting all the positive comments. But, despite the fact I'm on my tenth Land Rover vehicle since 1999 (including second cars), and haven't regretted it, if I was in the US, I'd probably go for the H2 too.
Way to go Andre. Roll over Romin.
Honestly I think a better comparison would be the disco 2 vs the Hummer H3 alpha V8. More narrow, more leather, etc. Most of the H2 accessories are for appearance sake and have little more than looks in common with all those sexy ARB goodies.
Uhhh...surely the premier off roaders were Landcruiser, Patrol, Discovery, Suzuki SJ, 4runner.....not for a moment would I consider the Hummer.
I like the Hummer but the Disco is better off road when to going gets tough and has better clearance, The down side to the Disco is they cost a heap to keep on the road and like jeep there are millions of off road accessories made for them, Absolutely Millions of new toys to plug in or bolt on, Great video guys thanks for posting.
I’d take the disco any day!!! I owned a 2000 disco series 2 with all the same off-road bits plus a snorkel and I could drive it on any trail in the great Smokey mountains, plus I was able to drive through 4ft deep rivers
Andrey’s H2 kicked literal Ass
H2's are so underrated, they're real beasts in any situation you encounter offroad. Worth getting if you can find one pre owned ! !
So did land rover defenders...
Let's revisit this video after each vehicle has another 10,000 miles on them (IF both make it that long...), and total up the repair (or replacement) costs! :D
It was great watching 2 real off-roaders just blow through this trail without even a minor slip of the tire. Well done!
jedironin380 the Hummer won’t have a problem making it another 10k miles with nothing more than oil changes. Plus most repair costs on the Hummer are dirt cheap since they share a ton of parts with the popular 3/4 ton GM trucks. (Engine, transmission, transfer case, axles, front suspension,)
@@chevyon37s The parts for the D2 are equally as abundant and cheap
@@chevyon37s that was his point
Roman the Andre's hummer b*tch slapped ur land rover should have taken up a Jeep or your Raptor lol jking looked like fun contest
I've always found LR Discos to be beautiful but this video made me respect the H2 so much more than I used to. -Jeep WJ owner.
I'd take the Hummer.
Both are good turds .... as long as you have enough $$$ to keep them rolling, you’ll have a blast mocking the naysayers.... cash to fill the Hummer’s tank or cash to keep the Disco’s gremlins in check.
Im getting 18 highway miles per gallon in my H3 I only got between 19-20 in my minivan but all the guys sweat my Hummer they didnt envy my mommy mobile.😉
The Discovery is a gas guzzler too.
@@kittykat632 That's an H3. H2's get 7mpg city, 11 Highway. The Disco II isn't that much better. 11/14. I've had both of these.
My discovery averages 13mpg on premium, so its probably about the same as an H2 in terms of cost.
Kitty Kat but it’s a H3 5 cylinder engine not comparable at all
Hummer all day reliability was always keys
I rather have the Hummer every day of the week...compared to Disco, better reliability and cheap to maintain.
I think the hummer is the one I would choose.
Bro! Get rid of the 3-way thermostat before you cook the head gaskets! That’s the most important up-grade on any discovery 2. Check your electric fan, it should kick in at 212F and bring temp down 204F.. your engine after the upgrade you can choose any thermostat, I find the 180f thermostats the best for any disco 2!
This.
Hey I'm looking to buy a disco with blown head gasket in a couple hours...so this may have prevented this from happening? I will look at this 3 way stat when I go. I love the design of these old Discos
I also remember this old video of a stock H2 versus the competition (including the Disco).
ua-cam.com/video/s_iNgFu9R6w/v-deo.html
Now a full TFL overland trip should happen.
H2 all the way :)
I'd rather have the 2004 Discovery. In fact, I'd like to have the exact one depicted in this video.
Roman will sell it... but 10Gs...
Mr. Mica might try to sell it for ten grand, but judging by all of the "Land Rovers are unreliable crap" comments that follow every video of this vehicle, it might well be a "buyer's market" if he does. I'm not holding my breath waiting, though. I suspect that Mr. Mica appreciates this vehicle for many of the same reasons I would. If it were mine, I would be inclined to keep it as long as I could get the parts needed to keep it running. I suspect he might feel the same way about it. The people I know who have Land Rovers use them off-pavement and aren't put off by the upkeep involved. One of my fly fishing buddies explains it thus: "Land Rover isn't just a vehicle. It is an all-consuming lifestyle. It consumes your time. It consumes your money. Sometimes, it consumes your patience......."
I'd like to see LR3/4 tests and comparison videos (-:
+Jerrold Shelton thank you jerrold for sharing your friend's point of sight on land rovers, being the owner of a 1994 disco1 i see myself and my disco too in his words. Found it heartwarming!
There's no halfway with lr's, you love 'em or you hate 'em. i really love mine.
@@belverdemotorsports2410 I suspect you really love your Land Rover because you actually use it in "Locked Low". That's what the common thread is for my friends that love theirs so much -they use low range, pretty much every weekend, to access quail hunting, fly fishing, or just cool camping spots. They shine bright enough off-road that the "price of admission" that goes along with keeping one running is worthwhile. None of my friends use them as daily drivers and in some cases they didn't even from new.
People was expecting the h2 to be a better humvee. It is no humvee, but it is a very capable 4x4. I think that's y it has a bad reputation.
I’ll take the Disco any day. Plus, this particular Rover is both beautiful AND in good shape.
Good luck getting the land rover serviced. Take that H2 into any of the gm dealers on every street corner and they can get parts or service it no problem
Why not just learn to work on vehicles yourself? Only a princess would rely on dealer service.
Joe Jacques Explain to me how these dealers stay open if only a princess would take their vehicle there
Oh snap
You do it yourself. Its really quite easy. I'll wager I can repair anything on the D2 quicker, better and cheaper than your GM dealer, mate.
America won World War II, because when our tanks broke down in the field, our soldiers repaired them on the spot. Germans, had to send their over-engineered tanks back to the rear on flat beds or trains (if their tracks hadn't been bombed out yet) for repairs. Thus, causing delays, inefficiency and higher costs.
Learn to FIX stuff yourself. It's the American way!
I'd go with the Hummer. Plus, it's just cooler looking.
just got a 2003 Hummer sitting on 36" Toyo tires and it looks new, runs great but did have to replace the fuel pump last week. I love driving that thing as much as driving my Corvette.
Stop colluding with that Russian Andre 👎🏻
I own a 07 h2 (22" BF Goodrich KO's), and it's wonderful, bulletproof so far just replace brake pads, shocks, and maintenance (3years with me), even if something breaks is cheap, definitely a keeper, saving money to supercharger for years to come to not stay behind from newer Vehicles.
Jorge Luis Burgoa Cosio make sure to have your transmission built before supercharging. And watch for the oil consumption on that 6.0.
I bought my disco 2 for 1600$ and she's running awesomely! Haha if I want parts I just go on Craiglist or what not and find someone selling a whole disco that's not running for 700$ or so hahahaha
Hilarious
You know very well what's to have a discovery 🕺🏻😁
I'd love to see a Jeep Commander Project - That's another large SUV from the mid-00s that was a victim of bad timing in the market. Also has a love it / hate it reputation from Jeep fans and offroaders.
Edward Green, Jr My old boss had a Commander that I drove a few times. I’d always thought they were cool, but a bit silly and unnecessary. It was neat, but MAN, vision out of it is TERRIBLE. I could never tell where the corners of it were. Ha! It felt way bigger than the GMC Savanna that I did deliveries in for him.
I agree. One of the most understated SUV's out there.
The more I actually looked into Commanders the more intrigued I am - It's basically a re-bodied Grand Cherokee of similar years. Share most of the underpinnings just like the relationship between the Honda CRV and Element. You gain a 3rd row and have a better style for the year IMO. Reminds me of the great old XJs.
I have two H2s and an H3 and I had a 2008 Range rover sport supercharged....as of 2018 the range rover sport left us back in 2010 and I don't regret it. it was at the dealer (while under warranty every month) so glad it's gone. also when I sold it in 2010 I found out the 2010 model had a new 5.0 engine. so ya i m glad i dodged a huge bullet. Hummers for the win here. my 2004 however did need new interior panels.
if i had to pick one i would get the Hummer the Discovery just doesn't work for me
The Disco looks so much better, both on the outside and on the inside!
Having ridden in the OG Humbler, I wouldn’t want any variation. Toyota and Samurai all the way!
Land Rover Disco 🙌🏻
The disco is just a better vehicle in everyway
I like both but I'd rather have the Range Rover
this is why i love your disco videos, yes they can be a bit unreliable, but parts are plentyful and cheap they will literally go anywhere known to man and they are just awesome 4x4 to own
hummers are great. i have a H# alpha (offroad) and the unicorn 2010 H3T alpha offroad. love them
I just bought one down here in Mexico and my h3t alpha has been my favorite vehicle I ever owned
Could not afford to keep the Land Rover on the road. Hummer uses mostly off the shelf GM parts bin.
The H2 is much better for me
The Disco is better for me because I am a mechanic that owns a towing company 😅😂🤣
I'd take the Disco because I love Land Rovers. Interior looks a lot better too. But the Hummer's still cool. Great video, keep it up guys!
Hummer is better, Disco is bigger turd!
I still see discos on the road. I don't remember the last time I've seen a H2 or H3 on the road.
They probably didnt sell as many, however i see vice versa
I would own that Hummer any day
Definable the land rover!
The disco has sub par systems all over it. At least the hummer will start andrun every time. Seen many discos come thru the shop with various everything broken. Expensive stuff to fix. Hardly seen any hummers come thru.
The Disco! We have three and love them.
Do the duramax vs hummer
alberto pimentel I see that
alberto pimentel let me make it simple for you... Hummer wins that all day. Larger tires, shorter wheel base, same front suspension, but hummer has more rear axle clearance (it’s a smaller axle and the larger tires) and pretty much the same width as the truck.
He sold his Duramax
NOOOOOO
The 99 to 02 silverados were the best ones of the 1st gens
As much as I like the Disco, I like not being stuck on a mountain more. Gotta pick the H2 as the "better" turd
the disco is the bigger turd for sure!! not reliable at all! the hummer is my choice if I was looking love those trucks and reliable as it gets
Hummer is the best truck
Neither of these vehicles are turds. They both have their merits whether good or bad, and what matters is exactly like Roman said - how do their ownership make you feel?
Interesting thing, one of the Disco's biggest gremlins is the three amigos, caused by shuttle valve failures in the ABS modulator. The latter is manufactured by Wabco and it is the same unit you'll find in a Hummer. I had 2 disco 2's both td5's and they were the best vehicles I ever had.
Now I want a hummer
That Disco will be in trouble when approach and departure Angles come in to play. That is on of the Hummers strengths. Once you upgrade the front suspension and add a few extra ponies, the H2 is an awesome vehicle. My H2 has a kryptonite front suspension (biggest tie rods ever), predator ECM, magnaflow, exhaust, air raid intake, 37" Cooper stt's, and aluminum race radiator for those Arizona summers. Andrei, please remove the steps!
andrei lopez those steps are a horribly low hang up point! Lol
I forgot the mud flaps too, take those off as well!
Whats your fuel MPG, sorry let me correct, your GPM? I'm constantly amazed at how little HP can be produced by these 6L engines.
Not being rude but I'm so glad the lady isn't back on the channel. She was to nervousing for me.
MOAR H2 VIDEOS!!!
This was an awesome video. Keep it up!
I love the hummer.
Hummer without hesitation, besides how long will an aluminum block last. Though $14k vs $5K, I am guessing the $9K difference could get a crate engine replacement. Na, still Hummer, at least I could sleep in it better.
Its two different kind of piece of crap... i like and dislike them both, for different reasons :P
Really liked this vid, two buddies having fun in their pieces of crap...! More of this please!
Ill take the hummer
Go ahead and paint the disco brown...says all about its TURDNESS.
Hummer all day everyday
Land Rover is a bigger pile. Only way to make it better is throw a LS in it
Aye
Landy all day. 👍
I own an H2 ! I love it!
Owned both, buying another H2, gun to my head i’d choose death over dealing with a discovery again
I'm a hard core Jeep guy, but Hummer baby!
I always love seeing this hummer in action!
H2 all the way
I would take the Hummer. Yeah it mite not be as nice on the in side like Land Rover. But still a beast of a Off roader.
H3 is better
It's not a car It's not a truck it's not just another 4x4 HUMMER Like nothing else... FOREVER IN MY HEART.
Of the two, I'd take the hummer, mostly because of reliability. I like the looks and features on the Disco but they're so notoriously unreliable I don't think I'd be willing to chance it.
Meh. I'll keep my 08 4runner, I have a center locking diff, 4wd, easy to get more clearance with 5100 series shocks, and some meatier tires. Price for mine would come under the H2 with higher resale value. considering I have 165k on the clock it's still a baby. When I get this done I'd like to go in the challenge haha, if these 2 are still around anyway
Roman, please stop over playing the “narrow tree passage” it’s plenty wide enough, and you’ve taken vehicles as wide and long as Raptors through it with no issues on multiple occasions. The only time I’ve ever seen it be a problem is days with lots of snow when the vehicle starts sliding unexpectedly.
Land Rover! I'd go for it!
Hummer
