Whenever I launch my spark I do palm launching, but what makes it way easier is just press de power button twice, then look at the camera and It will launch itself, and hover at a few feet. Then I grab my remote and get going. Way easier because you don't have to hassle with the remote in one hand, holding the spark in the other! Great video by the way!
Thanks , I've had my Spark for 4 yrs now and just learned more. The OTG cable for communication. Recently I've had a problem with interference at a certain location. And the "grab 90 degree" to turn off. I've grabbed and double click to turn off a few times . . . going to be handy knowledge. Thanks again.
Very useful advice! I've been flying a Spark since last year, but did not know about the pause button. I was once on a sidewalk and had the drone in tracking mode. After it tracked me for about 1 mile, the battery went low, so it decided to return to home. When it ascended, it hit a tree. It almost fell, recovered and did the same hitting the tree twice. I finally somehow managed to take it down safely.
I had my first flight a few days ago, tried gesture mode without my phone. It took off nicely, but seems to get confused about palm control and landing. Luckily I remembered your tip on the emergency shutoff, worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
I don't own a drone and have never flown a drone, but have done a LOT of video watching on the DJI Spark recently. Your short video is really excellent and informative. Thank you!
Definitely absolutely right! I got rid of my spark couple of times and I can’t help it I’ve got to have it still for the size there’s really no out there in the market that can actually perform just like the spark!😎👍
Steve Coutts I am so glad to have found and subscribed to your channel. A wide majority of videos on UA-cam relating to the DJI Spark are "high level" reviews whereas you bring it down to offer a common sense laymen’s approach of everyday challenges faced with flying and how to avoid pitfalls. I particularly like your hands on experiences along with accessories suggestions and detailed approach to improving our overall experience in flying. Looking forward to your future vids as you are a natural with sincere emotion..
Grab a $40 Syma quadcopter. Fully manual with no automation. It might be more challenging to fly initially but it will develop your manual flying skills, make you a better pilot and give you quicker reflexes too. Plus they're light weight and so can withstand many hard crashes. If you can get reasonably good at flying the cheap Syma, you'll be an ace pilot with the Spark and significantly reduce your chances of crashing it. I believe the Spark, like the Mavic, has a fatal design flaw for beginners. And that is no user-selectable Atti mode. If the GPS on the Spark malfunctions, it automatically switches to Atti mode. The problem is that people who are completely new to drones have no manual flying skills and no previous experience with Atti mode. And yet Atti mode is forced upon them by the Spark when the GPS gives up. In such instances, newbies are often overwhelmed and panic and crash or experience a flyaway. However, if you get reasonably decent at flying a cheap manual Syma, you'll be able to handle Atti mode on the Spark just fine and resume control.
anzaeria sounds really awesome! I haven’t crashed my drone yet (Flown for 3 hours now) but this could prove worthy for a drone project at my high school!
Hello excellent tricks thank you for your advices I have a question, you can't turn off the back lights or front lights of the spark like on the Mavic air or phantom 4? During flight
My son received this as a birthday gift years ago and we just recently pulled it out and your videos are quite helpful in figuring out all of the things that this does. Thank you so much for your awesome videos. Liked and sub'ed.
That's awesome! I'm a big fan of the Spark although I don't fly it too often any more. It's a great drone and a very good one to start with especially because it's pretty tough. I made a video for new drone fliers, which you may want to have a look at - ua-cam.com/video/tEiU4QKltA4/v-deo.html. Mistakes can be costly with a drone, so a bit of knowledge can go a long way. Best of luck with the Spark and thanks for the comment and sub. Cheers!
My "non-scientific" testing put it at about 10-15% less flight time but mileage will vary. I did a video on them - ua-cam.com/video/2qB2VwZXg20/v-deo.html. 😃
Excellent info. Thanks. I considered myself very familiar with my Sparky, then here you come with all your sparkly knowledge. No really, thanks a bunch. I'm now a new subby!
@Steve Coutts I just bought a spark and have been researching guides and tips, and your channel is amazing, I came across you on the DJI forums too! Thanks for keeping the Spark community so fresh and alive 😁 There’s amazing resources here for us beginners 😄
Nice to see new Spark videos, I did not know about the palm land without gesture mode. I found using an OTG cable is a problem if you knock it and it loses connection momentary, then it is better to rather go for WiFi.

Hey love your channel watch it all the time. Also a Spark owner and love it. I just wanted to point out you definitely get more distance using the OTG cable I have noticed. Less interference.
OTG was a bit on again/off again for Android but mostly 100% for iOS from the beginning. As Willie added a recent firmware update put it "on again" for Android.
helloo, we re 2.5 years later and i would like to see an update about this amazing machine The Spark..for example; Dos the OTG-Cable still work, or did DJI something about it [changing in the firmware or o?!] because I tried a lot, it doesn't work for me..have a good day/flys etc. ...[like ure vids.] so ...
Thanks. I have been toying with some video ideas with the Spark for a long, long time. I will be doing a new Spark video at some point. I still use an OTG cable with my Spark and just used it the other day to test something. It works fine. I am using an iPhone though. Android phones have always been hit or miss with OTG cables. Cheers!
Can you please help me with regards to firmware and dji go app version.. keep hearing that the new version is giving problems flying. What is the safe version and firmware for flying. Tha k you
Interesting. I am on the latest app and firmware version and have not had any issues. I am running on iOS though, not sure what mobile OS you are running. My app updates are set to happen automatically and anytime I the app prompts me to upgrade the firmware, I do. I haven't ever had an issue following that protocol. There is always risk anytime you install a new version so, if your experience hasn't been good, then turn off automatic updates on your app and wait a week or two before installing a new firmware. Good luck! 😀
I have no plans to upgrade to a Mavic Air and I am quite content with my Spark. Year after year there will always be a better drone, a better camera, a better phone, etc. For me, it's not about owning the latest and greatest piece of gear, it's about getting the most out of the gear I have. A new camera won't make me a better photographer but getting out there every single day and shooting pictures sure will. 😀👍
Hey Steve, thx for the video. When I plug in my OTG cable, it charges my phone for 1-2 seconds then my phone no longer recognizes it. Do I still have a connection being made from controller to remote, or must I physically be able to see my phone charging to know the connection is being made?
Thanks for watching! If you turn off WiFi on your phone and make a connection using the OTG cable, you'll know immediately if you have a connection via the cable or not.
You have to initiate a landing, or yeah, it's going to move away. Either trigger an auto-land from the app or hold down the left joystick (in remote mode 2 - default) while your hand is underneath.
Unrelated, what do you reckon is the best for a Spark, android or ios, flying in Ireland under ce regs so dist is limited, using Ipad mini at moment, any thoughts?
My finding recently was that the OTG cable actually caused my pixel 2 to drain faster. Maybe since the last app update it will be fixed. Im not holding my breath. I bought the cable for just as you suggest to have rock solid connection.
It does work again. Not still. Again. DJI doesn't seem to want you to know about it but the OTG cable stopped working for a few months but as of this summer it was working again although the software doesn't mention it. I recently had to buy a new controller and I thought it had stopped OTG function yet again but it just took a bit of perseverance and a reboot. If you are concerned by range use 2.4GHz and an OTG cable. Tip six, be very careful with any DJI USB B slot, you can damage the slot if you try to put the cable in upside down. DJI's slots are almost criminally badly designed. Always make sure the plug is the right way up before attempting to connect it. Most phones and tablets have the opening around the slot shaped such that your plug can't engage the socket if it is the wrong way up, DJI have rectangular slots that do allow you to poke it in the wrong way a bit which can bend the connections and bugger it up completely. Leave that OTG cable plugged in if you can.
The OTG cable on my iPhone has worked consistently since I started using it. Android has been on again/off again. The latest release 1.00.1000, which was release in July 2018 re-added OTG support for Android.
I finally got my OTG cable to work with my Samsung Tab S2! Also, Steve, do you have problems with your Spark's RC left phone clamp becoming loose? Because that's what's happening to me.
I believe that the amount of times I would use (and have used) an "emergency" motor shutoff over the lifetime of my Spark, the impact is probably negligible. I think the dozen or so crashes I've had have impacted the motors much, much more. 😀
Yay! Another spark video!!! Edit: I heard that some people don’t like the OTG cable with an iPhone. What do you think about OTG cables with iPhone’s? Also, this was a great and useful video!
Haha! Thanks! My OTG cable has been great. I don't use it each and every time, just mostly in the scenarios I describe in the video. It's been rock solid. 👍
I've tried otg twice and it didn't seem as stable as the Wi-Fi connection. I have heard that the latest update doesn't like otg. I'm running a galaxy s7.
It's an addictive hobby .... once you get a drone, then you'll want to get the remote controller .... then you'll want to get more batteries .... then you'll want to get a nice case for all of that .... then ... LOL !!! You get the idea :D

I believe that the amount of times I would use (and have used) an "emergency" motor shutoff over the lifetime of my Spark, the impact is probably negligible. I think the dozen or so crashes I've had have impacted the motors much, much more. 😀
nice tips sir 😇
Thanks!
Woooow I didn't know about the first tip. That's so cool! I'll try it today or tomorrow 😅
Awesome! One new thing! 😀
Steve Coutts Just wondering, do you mainly use it with an iPhone/ iPad?
Hi Steve.......I read that you can’t use the OTG cable anymore because of the latest updates......is that true?
I use one and it works very well
I've tried otg twice and it didn't seem as stable as the Wi-Fi connection. I have heard that the latest update doesn't like otg. I'm running a galaxy s7.
All i can say is u need this drone!
Yeah, I love it. Great stability and a good camera.
Love your videos
Thanks! 😃
I learned one new thing. That the gimble returns to horizontal position before landing
Me too
Proud owner, but I wish the Spark had a little more ground clearance. I have to use aftermarket leg extensions to give me that.
Thank you for this great video! 👍
Thanks for watching!
i dont have a drone.i dream of getting one.but thnx for the great video.keep the good work
Thanks! They are pretty fun.
It's an addictive hobby .... once you get a drone, then you'll want to get the remote controller .... then you'll want to get more batteries .... then you'll want to get a nice case for all of that .... then ... LOL !!! You get the idea :D
Great Video 👍🏿 Loved it
