- RICE PORRIDGE⤵️
All 3 of the boysenberries were sick so what better way to take care of them than with a hot bowl of chao- rice porridge
BASE
1.5 cups jasmine rice
8-12 cups water or stock of choice
MEAT OPTIONS:
Ground meat of choice- I used ground pork/ chicken
Shredded chicken
Salted egg
Salted century egg
SEASON TO PREFERENCE
Fish sauce
Mushroom bouillon
Chicken bouillon
TOPPING
Scallion, chopped
Cilantro, chopped
Fried shallots
Black pepper
Bean sprouts
Lime
1. Rinse and wash your rice at least 3x or until your water run clears.
2. Then add your rice into a pot along with 8 cups of water. Turn your heat to high and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for as long as you need too. [NOTE: add water as you go and make sure to stir so the bottom does not burn]
3. Once it comes to the consistency you want, then add your protein of choice. I’m using ground pork??? Or maybe It was ground chicken/ turkey.
4. You’re porridge is a blank canvas so season to preference. I like to season with: fish sauce, mushroom bouillon and chicken bouillon.
5. Once everything tastes good, then assemble urself a bowl with scallion, cilantro, fried shallots, black pepper and whatever ever other topping you’d like.
That burn was personal, felt it across the screen
She handled it the same way I do….spit it out!!
It was so savage her ancestors felt it
Scalding hot porridge burn on tongue is no joke, felt that through the screen!
@@Draaza
I bet her ancestors felt it 😉
The way she never cools her food down before taking a bite, gets me every time🤣🤣🤣
When you have kids, you either eat your food scalding hot or ice cold... You never get to eat it at the perfect temp until they move out of the house lol
@SarahRichardsGraba exactly! However by then you have grandkids and it starts all over! Lol
It’s way too relatable. Doesn’t matter what it is, pizza, ramen, pasta…whatever, I just can’t wait to dig in 😂 probably doesn’t help that it isn’t until I’m starving that I remember to eat lol.
@@SarahRichardsGrabaI usually choose scalding hot and try to tough through like her, lmao thanks for explaining why it got worse after kids.
I do that too 😂 I'm so impatient
I was like "nooooo its too hoooo.." and then you burned your mouth.. i felt that in my soul 😂
Looked like hot oatmeal where it burns you internal!
That was a roof of the mouth and the tongue burn!!
congee is ultimate breakfast, lunch, dinner, sick food, and comfort food. congee is a lifestyle. have congee you will not regret it
There was a time i ate it almost everyday for a month 😂
What exactly is it plz & ty
Yes! My favorite has ground beef on top. Mashi-so!
Definitely
@@Empress_Demurerice soup basically
'One scoop, and you done, did it'. That ladle makes sense to me!
It is damn efficient, especially when you’re dealing with molten lava rice..😂😂
I felt that burn.
Crack an egg on top and whip it in at that heat for a stick to your ribs meal. Time spent cooking the egg will also cool it down a tad more.
That measurement by ancestors 😂😂 is so relatable in Asian and India household 😅
And German households. It’s how my grandma taught me.
I'm yt an i taught myself; but everyone told me how amazing my maternal grandmothers food from scratch was, so I channel her, and listen HARD like I'm tryna hear secrets 😂
That is the ladle that all other ladles wish they could be 😅 love it
This is my dream ladle 😩
She always eats directly when it's hot😂 when I watched, I keep saying "Girl, let it cool a bit!" Love the recipe!
I like my chao loaded up with crumbled boiled egg, homemade garlic chili sauce, fried shallots, sliced scallions and cilantro. Mmmm!!! And you need the quay (fried breadstick) to dip it in.
Me too except the cilantro 😅
@@Maya-yp2ey I'm Vietnamese, so we put cilantro in everything. Herbs make everything taste fresher. And if you want to brighten the chao, squeeze in some lime.
We make this in the Philippines, and it is such a nice comfort dish. We use chicken with saffron and boiled egg on top.
Looove Lugaw ❤❤
Yes! Arroz caldo🥰
Saffron is ridiculously expensive. From what I gather, most of us Filipinos use safflower (kasubhâ), which is way cheaper and gives a similar orange-yellow tinge.
"my kids are white pepper" 😭😂
she said “black pepper but then again my kids….or white pepper”
@@loveIetterI love ur profile
@@loveIetterit was a joke…
@@atyourbesturluv.7106how was that a joke?
😂😂😂😂
One of my favorite comfort meals. My mom would make this for me when I had the cold/flu. Always made it for me when I was diagnosed with cancer at 18 because it’s so easy to digest. At 31 now, I make it for my 3 children. This morning I woke up feeling under the weather telling myself “I’m gonna make khao piak (rice soup in Lao) for dinner.” Gonna do shredded chicken from a rotisserie. Got some cilantro and lime, fried garlic, and chili oil. Love your content! Wish we could meet. We both like our food stupid spicy.
WTH is it it looks gross 🤢
It's literally congee, made of cooking rice and water. It's pretty much the same as gritz or oatmeal. Absolutely nothing gross about this. @@BCofG
@@aznmochibunny ok looks gross I stand by that
@@BCofG just because it looks gross doesn't mean it tastes gross. A lot of food that looks good often times is probably not good. Remember, looks can be deceiving.
@@aznmochibunny remember presentation is everything
I love this so much. You can also sautee ginger in a little bit of oil with the meat, IT IS A GAME CHANGER. Our climate is approaching the rainy days and this will be a frequent recipe in my house again ❤
Your ancestors also need to tell you to blow some air at your hot food 😂😂😂
I felt that burn 😅
Her ancestors always tell that to her but since it is not the matter of life or died, I think they are both not bother ít 😂😂😂
Mushroom bouillon is never used before i needa try that😍
i am deathly hungover rn and need this so badly 😫😫😭😭😭
Looks delicious! I make this every time I am sick. Simple to make, tasty, and easy on the stomach and throat. Definitely recommend it!
It's like filipino arroz caldo! Total comfort food
I was on the floor with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard as I have done that soooo many times!!!
You can also add ginger, it taste even better and it’s really good. And ginger is very healthy. You should try 👍 here in the Philippines we call it Lugaw (porriage)
Grits and porridge are the most underrated comfort foods.
love your simple, traditional, super yummy attack to the different dishes you cook
That's good with Kimchi 😊
Ive been trying to rediscover what this was from my childhood. Thanks for making this video
In China we call it congee or jook, and omg it’s the ultimate comfort food when you’re sick, or you just want something good and filling.

The word Congee is English, which is derived from Tamil "Kanji". In Mandarin Chinese, it's "Zhōu".
Babyy my whole body felt that one😂😂 i was jumpin around with you 😂😂
Dam girl, every freaking time. Every freaking time!!!! 😂😂
Ou girl that ladle is GENIUS
I need that ladle
It's my comfort food, and when my daughter wouldnt ANYTHING this is my go to! I promise its so worth it. This way she gets protein, veggies and carb and most of all FED ❤
👌 awesome ladle
I saw the light come on from the black pepper thing and i thought you were curing your food😂❤
Something we do here, we chop some garlic, fry them in a pan until golden and drizzle with the oil. Also, you can add some crispy rice treats (the thicker ones that need frying in oil)
I fell in LOVE with your ladle the 1st time I saw it, in a pho video. ❤
My stomach’s been hurting and can’t eat anything..wish I could have a bowl of that deliciousness😢
It's really easy to make and it's soon easy on your tummy. A friend recommended it to me when I was having issues with my tummy. I was so grateful as it was the only food I could keep down. 10/10
Omg my mum would make this for me whenever I'm ill. Its so warm, comforting and put me to sleep lol. I miss this so much
Get that one scoop! Hell yeah.
My nena would make us something similar but she would boil chicken nibbles first and then add the rice, peas and onions. One of my favourite childhood meals ❤
This is the kind of mother energy that I’m loading up for the love of my life and my future children (fur babies)
Juk is very comforting in the morning or when feeling ill
APPA DINNER IS READY 😈😈got me laughing so hard 😂😂
I made some today but I used sesame oil instead of fish sauce because there wasn’t any at Walmart. I topped it with rotisserie chicken that I browned and seaweed. It was so delicious I can’t believe I made it myself
Thanks for sharing. Ive wanted to learn a recipe/process for congee
love you call them boysenberries ❤
The commitment to tasting it in front of us, and then immediately regretting it
I love your label. I've never had congee before. I might try to make it
A small pot of it.
I finally decided to sub to you , I seen like two vids and now this my 3rd and I feel like It’s time to press the button
Love this dish so much. I love topping it with onsen egg. I can have a bowl anytime any day.
we use that ladle/pot for scooping/portioning at work. the item listing is for a sauce pan but it's really not meant for active cooking!! literally just an oversized measuring cup
You’re insane, I love it 😂 (in the best possible way)
My Nana would put a Whole cilantro sprig and whole green onion for the flavor and she would fish it out for the picky eaters. You still got the flavor and no green things for people to complain about.
Scallions.. and that hurt me on a personal level. Top tier garnish. I am far from the biggest fan of cilantro. I actually think it taste like chemicals, but I find it to be a very benign flavor in combination with others.
Yessss. Thank u. It reminds me of congee or at least what I think of when I think of congee. I’m very always wanted to try it but never found a recipe. Especially one that showed what the rice should look like. Tnx!
One of my favorites!
This is bringing back the vietnamese kid in me. Great tip: My daughter loves when I add salted chicken eggs and chopped fried dough sticks as a side dish with the porridge
I relate so much with your videos 😂 I’m definitely stealing the ancestor line. I always just say season until your gut says to stop but that’s way better
I make this too when i have a hangover
That ladle tho!
We South Pacific Islanders, call this alaguan. Cure all!
Yummm thank you for reminding me that fish sauce exists!
Dominicans have a dish similar to this that’s called asopao’ and I can confirm it does cure hangovers and amazing in colder months. We usually don’t put ground meat but the basis is the same, rice and water and condiments.
You are just right being silly with Hot Foods... but i like your recipes... comfort food in the house !!!❤
What’s your recipe ? It reminds me of my Thai grandmas rice soup . She made it when was sick as a kid
Chao is such a comfort food fr. When I was younger, any time I was sick my grandma would bring me a tub full of her homemade chao
This is how I make breakfast rice. Then add sugar, some milk and butter once it's cooked with a pinch of salt. 😘
My mom used to make that for all the time when I was sick!
Can you come out with a cookbook?!
Mushroom bouillon??? I didn’t know there is such a thing! That is a good idea!
i died thinking that was a pot and her clarifying that it isn't and her husband making fun of her 😂😂
Would love that with some boiled egg or deep fried tofu❤❤
you went "hafhafahaff" with the hot bite LMAO
Now I’m craving this thanks
Adding a fried egg on it is such a game changer
That's an industrial kitchen ladle for sure. We have them in the casino kitchens all the time and they make moving large amounts of food so easy.
My grandma and mom used to always make lugaw when I was a kid! With ginger and chicken! As a broke college kid, a huge pot of lugaw was great to eat off of when I was on a budget!
I've been craving congee. I'm taking this as a sign to grab that left over rice in the freezer and get to cooking. 😊
Thailand has something very similar called khao Tom…I make it every time we start to get sick. Love it! ❤
This looks so good
i was waiting for your “Bon Appetitties.” 😭
PS: that porridge looks so good!!
everyone whos Asian loves this porridge
Congee? My fave
I love rice porridge ❤
This was my fave growing up. In the Philippines, it's called arrozcaldo. Love adding patis, fish sauce, with white pepper and fried garlic. Oh and it must come with an egg. In ecuador, there's a similar dish called aguado. It's almost made in the same way minus the fish sauce
I like to season mine with fish sauce, calamansi (lime or lemon works as well), black pepper, and scallions 🩷 Pair it with fried tofu 😍
I know I ain't the only one that felt that burn.
THE BURN WAS SO FELT
and i love congee :D
Where did you get that mini pot ladle?!?! Genius! I can use it when I make goto which is another Filipino porridge like lugaw and arroz caldo.
I worked at a bilingual Chinese school when I was in my early 20s and was taught to make this porridge sweet. I can't believe I never considered it as a savory dinner! 🤦🏾♀️
The end of this bahahhaha you’re so fun!!!
😂😂😂😂 it was the "HAF SHA HAF SUH" for me!! 🤣🥵💀
I'm a half breed Asian from Hawai'i, and I have to say. That congee/juk you made is exactly how my mom makes hers. 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
I’ve never seen such a ladle before 🧐
I made pizza rolls 2 days ago. Burnt tf out the roof of my mouth. Skin still peeling. 😂 I felt her.
Oh we call that arroz caldo in the Philippines, I love it!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That hot bite killed me! Like, I’m literally laughing so hard… does anyone remember those bird whistles that you put water in before you blew them? I’m laughing so hard, THAT’S WHAT I SOUND LIKE! A dang water bird whistle!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
On a more serious note,…
One ingredient that is very important for the healing properties of this dish is the black pepper. The black pepper just makes the soup. Period. And depending on what you’re treating, sometimes it’s a case of the more pepper, the better (within reason).
Gurl them eyebrowa are giving me therapy they are so stable
I said "til your ancestors tell you to stop" to my 82 yo mom and thought she was gonna swallow her dentures. 😂😂😂 I may have to make this, it looks GOOD!
LOL that's a big ass ladle 😂
That's actually a traditional dish of our tribe.
