I love tying on a Klinkhammer hook! Maybe my all time favorite, especially the newer style Klinkhammer. I am warming to this pattern as you tie it, but I'm thinking I am a poor enough tyer I may stick to my Stimulator patterns, but I feel challenged enough to butcher a couple of these in my vise first! I have to be honest Barry, I had heard of you some time back, but honestly I didn't think anybody had anything to offer since I had been teaching myself from Davies work since his beginning online. I am very glad to find you are doing your own thing and doing it very well. Thank you for you willingness to share.
@@Thefeatherbender best part of fly fishing is each day is a learning experience. I was so influenced by a friend of my Father's who was both a Ship Wright and a pro fly tyer. As a six year old I packaged steelhead flies for him in 1965 I believe that fed the interest in my mind. He patented several Saltwater tube flies in 1963/4. Around that same six year old period we were walking along a crystal clear stream and at a pool I said something to Dad about there being no fish. Dad rolled a log and grabbed a handful of bugs, then tossed them in the pool we were looking at. All of a sudden there were fish everywhere! It awoke something in me that years later, is still hungry for knowledge and experience. Now I seek to awaken that in Canadian Veterans who have suffered psychological injuries in service to our Country and the First Responders who are dealt the same card. Thank you again Barry for inspiration I needed!
Great design, Barry. I went back to listen again, but I didn’t hear what feather it was that you used for the legs, other than a yellow one. Is that turkey?
Thank you! Appears to be a durable, easy to the, fish appealing fly! Would you change anything to make this fly large enough for Smallmouth Bass? My experience suggests larger fly, larger fish. Very nicely lit, camera angle, and to the point directions! Enjoyed very much, thanks again!
Loved the video and the section in your book. What is the tactical thinking of using a klinkhammer style hook versus a more traditional straight shank hook? Is it supposed to represent a mashed up hopper? Even when drowned, I’ve never seen a hopper with its legs/wings/thorax in one plane and the body in another. Thanks.
Hi Maz, its to do with what I call the Mexican hat theory, when designing flies. If you make a simple drawing of a matchstick man, can you tell which nationality he is from the drawing? The answer is NO, he looks like all other matchstick men! But if you draw a simple sombrero hat on him, you know he's a Mexican, right ! I select the most prominent features and make a caricature of the insect. With regard to this pattern, using a Klink hook separates the wings, legs from the body, making ALL the main features of the insect prominent and easy recognisable.
Thanks Barry. That makes sense now. A reminder to me that I need to think about flies and fly design at multiple levels - moving from checkers to chess.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us beginners. Could you recommend several quality c clamp vises under $200. I will be tying small wooly buggers to ears hare size 18. Thanks Dave

@@kerrypitt9789 Well done sir I take my hat off to you!
Another nice pattern. This is easily configured as a cricket, as well.
Fantástico pattern. Congratulations & thanks
Wow nice fly-guess I wouldn't want the fish tearing it up after all that tying work LOL
You and me both!
Very nice tie, Creative natural wing. I assume the resin is flex on that wing. Thanks for sharing, All the best, Sean
Hi Sean, yes its UV flex, just to make it a little more durable.
Great design, Barry. I went back to listen again, but I didn’t hear what feather it was that you used for the legs, other than a yellow one. Is that turkey?
Hi Johnny, thanks! The legs are made from dyed pheasant tail.
fantastic tankiou Barry
Thanks Guy, pleased that you like it.
Nice!

wow nice or what Kudos
It's a complicated pattern and a bit mess for my taste, but I enjoyed the video. Critical question, what does it catch!
Anything that eats grasshoppers & crickets!
