Often heard is that Aussie Rules is a combo of other sports ....It isn't . It's been around for 164 years and most other sports came after it , Tom Wills invented it in 1857 ... The top league started out as the VFL (Victorian Football League) which is the State that the game originated . The first season was 1897. Each State had similar leagues of the game but all the best players ended up playing in the VFL . Eventually elite teams came from all over Australia basically and extended to 18 teams and it became the AFL . My home State of Tasmania still doesn't have a team because the AFL Commission doesn't believe that our half a million population can support it . That said Tasmania has produced many , many great players over a long time that are household names of the sport. Welcome to the great game . My tip is to watch some of the games on TV or on You Tube etc . Best way to learn all the great bits and sheer excitement of it. I'm a crazy Richmond Tigers fan by the way ..

'Invented?' Australian Football is a hybrid game. Tom Wills was captain of football at Rugby College and if an oval shaped ball is involved it comes from Rugby. Also, Wills saw Irish immigrants playing Gaelic Football in Liverpool and was so impressed by the game he wrote a letter to his father saying Australia needed a game like this. The 'mark' is defined in the Rules of Rugby published in English newspapers in1822 (an attempt to get more schools to play the Rugby School game). So....take a Rugby ball, rules drawing on Gaelic football played on a cricket field with extra players to compensate and let the game evolve. Don't be brainwashed. Do your research. Enjoy the game for what it is.

This is the most exciting sport you can play or watch. No matter how big or small you're if you have what it takes you can play at the highest level.

Collingwood. 20 : 10 : 130. =. 20 goals @ 6 each = 120 plus 10 behinds @ 1 = 10. Added up is 130 points
Carlton. 18 : 12 : 120. =. 18 goals @ 6 each = 108 plus 12 behinds @ 1 = 12 Added up is 120 points

One of the, if not the oldest professional sporting leagues in the world. Superbly conditioned athletes too.
20 minute plus time on, most quarters go for 30 mins.
5 minute break at the end of quarter 1 and 3, and 20 mins at half time.
This season there is now a medical sub that can come on if a player is too injured, or fails a concussion test to return to the field.
I've seen a few reactions to this afl video and always thought this part needs clarification. Good job.
These guys are some of the fittest on the planet! Quarters end up being around 30 minutes, so that's 2 hours of game time. Some of the players can cover 15+ kms a game!!!

20 x 6 (goals) = 120 + 10 behinds = 130
So
9 / 5 would be 59
(9 x 6) + 5

Score line is not stupid. It's the traditional score. I believe in the past, the score used to be just goals and behinds only (probably wrong)

A few things from an Aussie Rules community league player
The people on the bench are the subs. Players are rotated irreguarly and it is whenever the coach believes someone is too injured to keep playing or some needs a rest. There are also emergency players (I think 2 or so) that will fill in for players that become too injured to play for the remainder of the game.
Usually the grand final sells out. The MCG can hold 100,000 people approx. The stadium is packed and outside the ground there will be people begging for extra tickets so they can go themselves. It is usually a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
There are 23 rounds in the AFL Premiership season. Each team plays at least 22 games with one bye in the middle of the season. How many the finalists play that year depends on if they win or lose those games.
The AFL, in 2017, started a womens league. The AFLW has a few changes. Quarters are now 15 minutes + extra time for stoppages, the ball size is smaller, and there are only 16 players on the field. The game is even played by children across the country. Many leagues tone down the tackling for those under the age of 12 (at least they did for me) and the game, as long as you're careful, is quite enjoyable and you should only suffer a few bruises.
Explanation of the score numbers: the Collingwood score of 20 10 130 means 20 goals, 10 behinds, and the final tally of those two is 130 points. This is because the goals are worth 6 points each.

They also have short guys tall as in 5' 6/ 7 ..the MCG where the grand final is held holds 100thousand people seating....the game started back in 1860 s it is a winter sport over hear , we also have an AflW teams which is the women's league they as from next year will have also 18 female teams this is a new concept because it's been an male sport up till now .

I come from a rugby league family but I love AFL and for the life of me I can't work out why more Americans don't follow the game. I mean it has everything you Americans like high scoring it's fast with some really big hits. Spred the word and get into the sport you'll be glad you did.
The amount of times i have heard the word ‘man’ in this video is unbelievable
The Melbourne cricket ground actually hold 110,000 spectators and the grand final is almost always sold out

Catching a ball that has been kicked us called a 'mark'. Jumping off someone's back is called a 'speccy'
4 subs may not seem like much but in afl they will interchange players when there tired, after a goal or to get new orders from coach and they do this over a 100 times a game so everyone always gets a rest.

No probs mate you chose a good time to get interested in AFL as we're in the last few weeks before September which means finals time.
The number of interchanges has been reduced to 75 per game, but I reckon that's too many. About 40 or 50 would be better.

Also, why take someone off when they kick a goal? Leave them on and see if they can get another one, I reckon.
There have been a few of the boys signed up by gridiron teams just to kick the ball, some of these boys can kick just about the full length of the field... one of the best was a bloke named Gary Abblett, can't remember which team he played for but he was one of the first to go over there... might be worth looking into how many and who they were/are...
These are probably some of the fitest athletes to play any sport...
Also, check out the WAFL, which is the Womens League, some of the girls are as good, if not better than, the boys... it's well worth a look too...
There has been 2 generations of Gary Abblett’s the first Gary and then Gary Jnr. They are all local to both Gippsland & Moriac, Victoria. They are not from America and are purely Australian. Gary Snr played in the 1980’s and his son Gary Jnr who is considered the greatest of them both is currently playing for the Geelong Cats.

1st up. The USA has its own AFL League. Check it out. You actually have a good size league. 2nd, the AFL has just bought in a medical sub for injury and concusion and 3rdly. We use metres not yards.

Theres a new rule this season.theres a medical sub. So basically if one of your players gets fucked enough they cannot play the next week you can have one person designated as a sub. But yeah... afl is a bloody insane sport... that only us aussies could have thought up of.

Personally I prefer watching rugby/rugby league as it has more nuances and tactics, but AFL is the most fun to play as it has very few rules to learn. Something not mentioned in the video is that the sport is derived from Ireland's Gaelic Football.

I have a simpler explanation of AFL. It's what Australian mothers push their sons to play because both of the Rugby codes are too physical for them. My daughter tried but both her sons went back to Rugby after one season.
