💊 Theophylline is a bronchodilator drug, belongs to drug class methylxanthines. Theophylline is used to reverse acute airflow obstruction in patients with asthma. Use of theophylline is limited due to, decrease effectiveness, drug interactions and adverse effects.
📍 Mechanism of action of theophylline: It works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase enzyme, leading to an increase level of cyclic AMP within cells. This results in smooth muscle relaxation, and lowers airway response to stimuli.
📍 Side effects of theophylline include, nausea, vomiting, headache, increase heart rate and insomnia. Theophylline may make pre-existing cardiac arrhythmias worse. It may also worsen peptic ulcers. Theophylline can also increase risk of seizures, in patients with a seizure disorder.
📍 Theophylline has a narrow therapeutic index. Theophylline is a major substrate of CYP -1A2 enzyme, and a minor substrate of CYP-3A4 and 2E1 enzymes. So watch out for interactions with other drugs.
