- Formula 1 drivers are extremely talented at driving fast forwards, but can they race a car in reverse? We sent Max Verstappen & Yuki Tsunoda to Zandvoort ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, and put them in DAF Variomatic cars find out. Capable of driving at 120kph backwards these cars are a whole new challenge 🏁

DAF... the iconic car from the Netherlands which could go as fast forward as backward. My aunt had one. Driving in the 1970s required some real survival skills...

@@redbull I wandet to build a Daf with a Honda engine in the back. Bike or car engine, bike engine in front would be a Honda Goldwing, in the back could be a Honda k engine. i olso have plan to build a faster and safer machine to recover F1 cars and others. It can olso be used to prepear the track for the race and lot's more. But now i have terminal cancer, so i have not the resorses to build the thing's i would like to build.

@@redbull They are. Maybe you guys should try the same when the boys don't have an F1 race. Speeding in reverse is really interesting.. I tried that once in a Volvo 66 (same car).
I used to have a Volvo 66 also with a variomatic gearbox.
Looks just like a DAF too.
You could actually push start it backwards.
Never had so much fun with a car as I had with that one.
The "Are you ok?" when Yuki crashed. I can only imagine the worry of whoever thought of this idea.
It seems like you could very easily injure your neck doing this. Kind of surprised it's a thing and these drivers were permitted to do it.
This seems like a good time to mention that Max was allowed to drive an F1 car before he was allowed to drive a road car.

Yeah, I mean, I was 17 when I started which is now not allowed anymore by the rules. You need to be 18. The first year was quite funny. I was not allowed to drive on a normal road, but of course allowed to race in F1.

We've seen Max Verstappen race caravans in the past and now we've seen him race in reverse. I think he's ready for the ultimate challenge: reverse caravan racing.

I don't know. He was not very clean in his reversing. A good truck driver will be better than this.

@@wyvern3 I'm well aware it's very far from a truck. Just saying I was always pretty good at reversing but when I got into trucks I became basically a 'professional reverser'. There is lots of technique which you won't appreciate until you do a lot of it. Max is clearly a beginner. He is making beginner mistakes.

I just love the combination of Yuki and Max together doing silly things. Yuki is basically the same fearless type as Max was when he started. Funny to think they both are the youngest Red bull drivers in F1, and Checo and Pierre are the 'older' more sensitive 'brothers' at Red bull, lmao! 😂
It's more difficult than it looks, I once tried it with an old DAF destined for demolition, I ended up side down on the roof after the first attempt at a corner

I remember as a little kid watching "Achteruitrijden" on TV with commentator André van Duijn. Hilarious! Back in those days everything was possible. Nobody had ever heard of safety. Good times back then.

@@yornav Even back then in video's you see also other cars then DAF. So that would not be a reason. Safety is the main reason yes.
Driving backwards was popular on tv in the late 70’s. Most of the cars were DAF cars because they had only two gears; forward and reverse. In the same tv show, they also raced with caravans behind their cars. There definitely was often material on the track.

DAF actually invented the continuously variable transmission, which instead of am automatic transmission being a series of planetary and solar gears, they're really just 2 rubber bands that work in forward and reverse

@@weatroreport The modern version of this transmission - yes it still exists - uses a kind of mesh metal band. While the patent has expired the original company which was a sub division of `van Doorne Automobiel-Fabrieken` (Van Doorne Auto-mobile Factories) is still one of the leading companies in producing the push-pull belt that is the main part for this type of transmission.
Don’t forget the old Subaru Justy automatic. They had variable gears as well. Also extremely fast backwards.
I am a Lewis fanboy, but Max has my utter respect for doing this so smoothly. It's not easy going fast in reverse - let alone navigating corners. Credit where credit is due - Good one, Max 🔥🔥🔥

As a kid I loved to watch this and also the caravanraces at Zandvoort. Safety wasnt a big issue back then.....

Just brilliant 😂 in the 70 and beginning of the 80’s in NL we had a program called “Ter Land Ter Zee en in de Lucht” and their they also had “driving backwards with the DAF and caravan races. They wrecked so much DAF’s the are now hard to find🤣🤣

At this point max can even drive this car next weekend at zandvoort in reverse with a 20 place grid penalty and still win by 40 seconds

Fellow old farts may remember Rob Slotemaker's driving school at a section of the old non shortened Zandvoort tracks parking.
Student's learned how to control 180 and 360 spins and drifts. I recall an instructor approaching at speed a simulated garage, doing a 180 and stopping backwards exactly in the spot. That was pretty impressive. I believe Slotemaker operated a UK driving school as well.
The sad thing is Rob died after he crashed his Camaro on an oil spill on the track left by another competitor who blew up his engine. All of his anti-skid skills didn't save him in the end. He crashed into a Marshal safety car and carreened into a fence. He broke his neck and died there on the spot.

is this a real racing series? just asking because i am the official world record holder for the fastest nürburgring lap in reverse gear in granturismo sport and for achieving the highest topspeed in reverse overall…
i did hundreds of reverse laps on the nürburgring and tbh id say i cant lose control at this point. if there is any way to race in that series, please let me know
In 1993 Williams tested this CVT tranmission (Variomatic) in their F1 car. The biggest issue that they had to overcome was to find a belt strong enough to transfer the 850HP. They managed to do that but then it turned out that they would be so extremely fast compared to the rest of the field, that the FIA decided that F1 cars should have 4 to 7 fixed gears. So basically, a CVT works too well.
The car was instantly 4 seconds a lap faster. 4 Seconds...............
Infinite variable gearing. My wife just bought a new 2022 honda crv which has a cvt. Its shockingly good. Why don't all new vehicles have this is my question especially for regular passenger vehicles
also did you hear the sound of that car... it was horrid on a whole new level.
DAF made a variomatic F3 and a hill climb race car themselves in the early 70's too. I think in this respect the great advantage of the CVT is that the engine doesn't have to do different revs very wll, you can design it and tune it for one optimal rev. Engine breaking is a bit tricky though.
If Williams did, Imagine a Group B Quattro with CVT...😇 Would have been a Nightmare durch Technik...;)

I noticed that too. Yuki had a plate, it doesn’t work with Red Bull so is it just for show or do AT have something like the paddock. Btw I’m on 4250. The code for this weekend is PDKZAN for 50 points.
