  • Hey Everyone!
If you've ever bought a gunpla because you were stressed out, then this video is for you. For a lot of people, choosing to invest in a hobby can be an exciting experience. Having control over your purchases, picking and choosing cool kits to build can be a great way to build a positive association with the hobby. However, there are instances where we don’t get to engage in our hobby how we would like, and we use our spending as a means to alleviate some stress and anxiety. While temporarily this can be beneficial, it’s not a sustainable model long term and can even develop into a serious issue. So today I want to talk about why you stress spend on gunpla.

For me, seeing the community show off their massive backlogs is validating towards me feeling okay to purchase what ever I want. It's not breaking the bank in any way but I feel the deeper one goes into the hobby and community, spending is definitely easier to justify. Of course, not everyone will have that same sentiment but generally, being in the zeitgeist or feeling like you belong plays a large part in it. An unpopular opinion of mine is that backlogs over 10 kits doesn't seem healthy but I just have to remind myself that some people prefer just owning something as a collection and not building them, sort of like buying shoes and never wearing them.

For me, just impulsively picking up a gunpla, or something related to another hobby, gives me a (illusory) feeling of stability, or maybe control over my life. It's make believe that "I'll be fine, this is a small purchase."

And in small doses from time to time it's okay. 😁 It's when we rely on it instead of addressing our problems. We all make mistakes and beyond that, there's nothing wrong with treating ourselves from time to time. Thank you for watching and sharing your input. I truly appreciate your support. 😁

FOMO + low chance of reprints of kits I want + buying everything I think will go out of stock = 147 kits in backlog T__T
Every time going outside I may end up buying stuff...
Sometimes it's so hard to make myself sit down and build. I often end up procrastinating even the thing I enjoy doing. But inertia is key. Just start doing it and it will flow.

I'm not buying things on impulse; I have quite bad obsession with perfection. I bought 2 HG Calibarns because I wasn't satisfied with the outcome. Then I bought another Sazabi because I didn't paint it correctly.
I know the right course of action is just fix it. But for some reason I loathe fixing the 'broken' thing. I'd rather build a new one. I personally think that this is a bad obsession and I'm working to fix this, but my mother said that I had chronic mental issues.
Should I go to therapist or just work it by myself? I have already done much much better than I was. I build gunpla because I LOVE gundam since I was a little kid and I love to build things. My mother said my obsession with gundam (or any mech) is not normal.
I earn a good sum of money, didn't married, didn't do alcohol, not smoking, not gambling, mild temperance, eating healthy food, and go to hooker once a month. Yet she said I'm sick on the head just because I don't have any interest in marrying or having friend.

Another great and useful video! This one hits home for me as I had a period in my life where compulsive kit purchase (and paints, tools, etc.), was my norm to cope with a highly stressful personal situation. Buying kits was my coping mechanism to find reward and affirmation I did not receive in my personal life. My stash of kits grew to over 300 in a short period and none of them was being built. It was just hoarding. My finances took a hit too. Luckily, things evolver positively in my personal situation and the purchases stopped almost entirely and very quickly. It’s several years now I enjoy building my gunpla and model kits from my backlog, buying only rarely a new kit.
Thank you for talking about this topic and telling the community to seek mental help!

HOOOOH. This video found me right when I needed it. I went from the “How to apply water slides” to this one. Was gonna buy a 30MM robo dog and the Chu-Chu figurise, but I think i’m gonna finish up a kit or two before I buy anymore! 🫡 Thank ya, pardner
