- I had this planned before the reveal of Bandai releasing another version, but I thought it would be fun to sit down and quickly go through most of the 1/12 scale Darth Vaders from the companies giving us 6-Inch Star Wars, like Bandai S.H. Figuarts and model kits, Medicom MAFEX, Hasbro Black Series, and even Kaiyodo Revoltech. You may not like the results but there is a little something for everyone out there.

"Oh Robo filmed a Darth vader comparison? Lets release a new version of ROTJ Vader" - Tamashii Nations, 2019
The helmet still feels disproportionate though. Which is a shame because their line is usually the most accurate.
My luck! I need to review money next.
The more I look, the more I like. It's very close to the model kit helmet. But from the side it still looks a little long. Either way, still an improvement over the ANH helmet.
Forrest Penrod Seen the new images? It doesn't
I enjoy the new release, looks great next to Maul....get your Sith shelf on
Amazing how far a cheap 20 figure made it in this list
That sh figuarts Darth Vader helmet looks like the robot chicken one.
Robo tchicken
And the revoltech boba looks like the robot chickens version. Now you can have a robot chicken shelf😂
😂😂
@Bryon Schwarz perhaps those are the figures that robot chicken used
Joe Gower Nah, they don’t use Licensed figures 99% of the time. It’s practically always figures manufactured for the series exclusively, not sold anywhere. The few exceptions are the unavoidable ones. (Lego, as an example.) So no, they wouldn’t have used the SH Figuarts Vader for the series, since the toys are only manufactured to be used in the series. Have a good day, pal!
“Must not lick the blue jolly rancher” 😂
I'm giving this one to the 40th Anniv BS version. While I agree on all points regarding aesthetics, it's the only one to give us a good compromise between figure and form with the cloth robe/skirt (or whatever it's called), giving us a truly unhindered articulation in the lower body. There also seemed to have been a global sale of BS figures and it went for under $10 ($5.72 equivalent in my country, to be exact). I got the Legacy version with the diorama for $10. You're actually getting more than you paid for with these prices. It's currently my definitive DV figure.
Exactly, I agree completely, got mine when toys r us was going out of business, and I've never regretted the purchase.
I agree with you. I have the Black Series 40th single box version and once you get the cape and articulation posed, you can pull off so many great movie moments.
It's too bad robo made this video so close to the newest BS Vader, because that takes the 40th Vader and just perfects it. Legitimately the best Vader figure that's been available IMO
Vader is my favorite character, and I have a few figures from different lines. I personally like the 40 anniversary black series version for the 6 inch size. Great video Robo.
The Rogue One Vader is the best out there right now. He goes well with some of the Star Wars Figuarts line too so it's a bonus.
For me i'm Black Series 40th anniversary all the way. Although the cape looks juuuust a bit too big.
You've done it. You've finally done it. You've convinced me to finally get the Rogue One Mafex vader.
It's the red lenses, they are amazing!
40th Anniversary SWB Vader. Will never need another Vader ever again and that is the truth and nothing but the truth I swear to Jebus
Three years later and 40th rotj or obi wan vader may have replaced it
@@Tom11025 So true, I pre ordered the 40th rotj one. Ok, now I'll never need another Vader figure again.
Well done review of the Battle of the Vaders.
Have most of these in my cases in various poses/scenes.
Your review shows that high price does not always mean a better figure.
Really enjoyed that, keep these show downs coming!
Love this video! And yes I agree that RO Vader takes the cake, but now I want to build the Bandai model kit too. Thanks Robo..
Over the past few months I've started back collecting, from watching your videos man ! Keep it up !!!
Haha, I don't know if I should apologize or not. But thanks, too kind!
Thanks for this informative video, it helps us in decision making... hope to see more video like this...
I like his “Rogue One” look best. The helmet extends down more, and the underpart of the face grill makes it appear more like Vader is looking down on his opponents. Just a tad more menacing IMO.
new esb vader is number 1 for me now, for 20 bucks you can't beat it
Excellent review!, I could not decide which definitive version to buy. Now I want them all .... lol thanks!
I have (or had) most of these and fully agree with the final choices. The Mafex RO Vader is hands down my favorite and became my “action” pose Vader while the 40th anniversary is my vanilla/static pose walking around the Death Star Vader on my shelf.
Great video... for me the winner is the 40th anniversary Vader, not only is a great cheap figure, but also he can crouch and sit thanks to the soft goods in the robes.
I'm really digging seeing you talking in the booth. It's been a nice change. Keep up the good work, Robo. 👍🏻👍🏻
I feel like I can express myself a little better, not just a pair of talking hands, haha. Plus finally learning my editing software has opened up all kinds of possibilities!
Thank you for this. It really helps deciding which one is really the one for me. (Model kit)
Respectable comparison. I love the 40th hasbro anniversary Fig, love the head sculpt and reddish eyes. And the cloth goods is wonderful.
Definely will buy the new Rotj Sh figuarts for sure , really need a decent Unmasked head 👍🏻
The Black Series 40th is my go-to, as you just cannot beat that price point... But, had I the bucks, I’d get that Mafex Rogue One Vader. Those lenses, man. Hot damn.
The lenses do it for me, for sure.
Black Series 40th is the best, which is sad because I have several problems with it.
I've never had more buyer's remorse over a toy than I did with the SH Figuarts ANH Vader.
Yeah, a lot of things wrong there, might be why they are giving us another so quick.
Let the games begin. How can you not love Vader? Great video. 👍
Great video! I got the Hasbro version one & two but you sold me on the MAFEX Vader ver 2. Thanks again for your awesome video. Thumbs up!
Thanks man! And....sorry...haha!
@@TheFwoosh haha..., no worries, I really do appreciate your input. Your taste coincides with mine. The MAFEX Vader is juicy. But yeah, I wasted money on that Hasbro ver1... Big time, droopy Vader... lol. Thank you amigo
This is a good series, Robo. I think you should keep doing them with other toys. We have been spoiled by companies by giving us different versions, I think this is very informative to indecisive collectors (including me). Thank you
Heck, I have them and I'm still indecisive about which one I like best, haha. But it's a fun video to do, may need to get more official bracket graphics and such.
Nice video ! Congratulations!!
It isn't in this video but I gotta say that the new ROTJ Figuarts Vader is by far the best one IMHO. The cape is tricky but once you get it in a good spot it's hard to take your eyes off of. The proportions are perfect and the helmet is impossibly good looking.
my favorite design for Vader is the one in Soul Calibur 4, specifically his alternate costume that doesn't have a cape.
A battle years in the making is finally upon us, the proportions of such will be epic.
I knew it, rogue one dv was gonna come out on top. Great vader comparison brother
Bandai model kit for me, best helmet sculpt from far, but if you'll have to customize it a little bit if you want it to be almost 100% accurate ;) but it's totally Worth it. I paid it only 20€ (idk how much it is in dollars) and it's according to me the best looking Vader in terms of sculpt
"...but at the same time I am just looking at action figures." That´s nothing. I am just looking at you, looking at action figures. My forefathers are spinning in their graves.
As Shartimus would say "DARTH VADER PARTY YEAHHH!!!!!" lol!
I’d be down for more comparison vids... Mafex Rouge One for me
Awsome video bro
Rogue One Vader is the best!! By far in my opinion! And he is one of the best figures I have :D! Thx for your reviews Robo! Saludos desde Argentina! :D
I know I am being nitpicky, but the Rogue1 Vader is more of an ESB Vader as the inner robe does not go over the shoulders.
Dude. Spot on. I went with the Mafex 2.0 when that was released, and I never looked back. The pros far outweigh any cons. While he's ever so slightly too small, he still looks and fits the best with the Figuarts collection. What he needs more than anything is a 3rd party cape. Even after pulling the wires out (surprisingly simple to do,) I ended up giving him the Hasbro 2.0 cape as both the length and fit was better. I'd also love to give the Mafex 2.0 some inner cloth robes, but that doesn't look like it would be a simple thing to do. A lot of his pieces appear to be glued or plasti-welded together.
Yeah, as time goes by I've been weary to go cracking into it. Getting where I can't afford to replace it, heh.
Great video!
I'm kinda surprised that the Mafex Rogue One version won. Not complaining, it's my favorite. I think every company has made the cape too big though. RotJ model kit gets there closest, but it's still rubber. Considering using that as a template and making my own wired version.
Keep these coming though! Love the Robo Showdown!
I'm happy with my Bandai model kit Vader. He was fun to build and looks damn good. I do need to get a cloth cape for him, though.
Great comparison video! 😎👍 #subscribed
You should make more showdown videos.😁👍
Carson Clifton he should do Stormtroopers next.
The newer black series Vader was an all new sculpt. I have both, and can confirm it.
And yeah while the Mafex Rogue One version has a very nice looking helmet (especially the red lenses!) my favorite is still the 40th BS Vader. It has the bulk, the cloth capes, and that sweet helmet that looks like it was taken straight out of the movie.
Great review. Thanks. I agree with your conclusion.
You mentioned another one coming...which is that?
Thanks Robo. I have the red box BS as well as the 40th Anniv . A tip to buyers .The red box version has much more vivid silver highlights on the helmet . Much nicer !
One can never have too many Star Wars figures. But my current favorite is the Rogue One Vader from Mafex
When I first started a 1/12 scale star wars collection I watched this over and over to decide which Vader I wanted. Eventually I got the newer ROTJ Figuarts Vader that isn't even in this video. I think that it is the best one available now - in case anyone else is here doing what I did last year.
Well done!
Fantastic review man agree with the rogue one mafex version being the best my favorite out of all of them is the 40th anniversary bs version
Hasbro 40th anniversary is my favourite because of the cloth skirt. Closely followed by mafex rogue one. The mafex rogue one vader is great but that plastic skirt puts it behind hasbro. It does not look great when the cape is cloth.
Love these ultimate comparison videos! Always end up learning a thing or two.
Everyone wants to have a Vader that looks like the Darth Vader from the movie, I love the bandai model kit Vader, but I think that the Black Series 40th anniversary Vader looks impressive, most impressive!
I enjoyed this, do others in the future.
Black series Vader for me..He just hits the nostalgic buttons and the presentation on the vintage cardback puts the nail in it
I love these types of videos you should do more definitely! Spiderman or something would be great.
as for the outcome I will respectfully disagree the mafex definitely has better articulation I think the black series 40th has the edge in the other areas. great video Robo, I love this channel!
You spent 19 minutes explaining why I SHOULD get the MAFEX Vader & I still cant decide! I HATE being a perfectionist as a collector haha.
that mafex vader is beautiful it just looks so cool with the glosses and the translucent eyes and overall detail I def agree with you robo its the best but for me the Black series vader is a very close second
I like black series v2 best personally. Medicom is neat. Robe should go over the shoulder armor though. I always felt that SHF looked like Masterpiece POTF2 Vader.
If they're claiming it's a "Rogue One Vader" then yeah, the robe should definitely go over. Feels like they just went with what they had engineered though and just used Rogue One as promotion, hence the ESB/ROTJ robe
Or later in ANH.
Yeah... Same here. They definitely made this figure before Rogue One, as a lot of it isn't very accurate...
Its amazing how different he looks film to film . If you watch new hope in 4K upscale you can see wood grain in his face mask. The helmet for revenge of the sith (spoilers) looked odd at first because it was symmetrical an machine made but the originls were sculpted so were not even .
I have a buddy in the 501st and that's exactly what he's said about the Stormtrooper buckets too. You get them too symmetrical and they look all kinds of wrong.
Very interesting video! Must admit it feels like every 4 months you're always talking about a new Vader that got announced and it's getting kind of hard to keep up at times :')
Might pick up a model kit some day to add a bit of Vader to my (small) 6 inch Star Wars villain collection!
No kidding, and as soon as I shoot this, another one gets announced. It's crazy.
Thanks for this great video! I think a well modded bandai model kit could be the best one. It's not perfect ( limbs has ugly shapes ) but the rest are very nice.
Black series 40th figure for me, its awesome!
Well, this was useful.
That sets it, I'm getting the 40th anniversary Vader (I'm on a budget). I would love to have a video like this one but for Spider-Man figures. I'm planning on getting more Spider-Man figures and I would love to see which one is better.
Decent budget figure vs Quality material and slight dynamic articulation, basically
You get what you pay for.nice vid
i just ordered the black series vader now all i need for my OT shelf is yoda and r2d2
Really want you to paint the model kit. It has so much potential.
The shoulder/upper chest piece on Mafex version 1 reminds of an Ace Frehley stage costume from 1979/1980. Must be the serious contrast between black & silver... makes it look huge.
But that’s just me.
Me: i feel a disturbance in the force
Force: i feel disturbed by those toys
You made the right choice my friend
I don't think you should've included the modifications into the comparisons because say for example when you compared the model kit and the shf and you were saying the Cape is better for the model kit there's no reason why you couldn't put that cape onto the shf
And since people are going to look at this for the best one to buy whatever they buy won't come with the modification so they would have to go and get the modification for it
Comparisons should always be the same Base figure as it came
Definitely agree, the model kit on its own with a hard plastic cape makes it the worst one in my opinion. I don't mind a modded figure in the running, I just think it should be labeled as such, it should be referred to as "my modded Vader" or something like that (instead of "the model kit").
But I started the video saying there was a modded figure in the running, and I included it because at it's base concept the model is supposed to be painted and such? And then during the model part I showed the factory piece with the hard cape?
You call the model kit "fairly cheap" but I'm assuming you mean the base kit itself is cheap. What would be the cost if you added in the cloth cape and skirt, as well as paint and brushes? The price of the cape especially needs to be added to the cost of the figure, but it's unclear if you did that. I also think that since you actually worked on it you're likely to be more attached to it than you would have otherwise been. I liked the video and want to see more like it, but I also want them to be as good as possible and this is the only criticism I really have: I think referring to modded figures as "my modded (blank)" will help to remind you of the improvements you've made to the base figure and you'll be more conscious of them when thinking about things like cost. Overall loved the video, this is just some (hopefully) constructive criticism :)
Nice video
I agree with all your picks.
I remember having an Anakin/Vader “NOOOO!!” figure as a kid with the table from episode 3
I'm definitely in the vast minority here, but my favorite version is the revoltech one, the cape might be hard to manouver but like every revoltech figure with a cape once you put it in the pose you want it looks awesome, it just looks so good once he is in an action pose, the range just makes it able to do so much cool stuff
I definitely get all that, I love my Amazing Yamaguchi figures, but this one is extra blocky to me. As in, just a block, haha.
Walrus Vader actually has a great utility to him,
When I was taking the walrus Vader apart I took his Cape and his overlayed Robes and added it onto the Model Kit Vader, it gets rid of that ugly plastic look and adds a more realistic look to it, not to mention it hides gaps in articulation.
So in short if you find a walrus Vader for cheap buy it, take the cape and the Overlayed robes and mod it onto the model kit, the end result is badass 😁
Hahahaha I've been waiting for this!! The Revoltech is a massive turd!! I switched out the cape and inner robes but it's still a turd!! I have the first mafex (which I really like) and both Black Series versions, but the model kit is my all-time favorite. Great video!! Cheers
I want to point out, the new SHF Vader return of the jedi, the chest piece is moulded in transparent plastic, so the lights parts look awesome
I know it wasn't out at the time Robo made this video, but for me the winner is the Black Series 40th Anniversary Empire Strikes Back Vader. I really like the New Hope version but it's not my favourite design for Vader and the Empire version has much better articulation.
I know this is from 3 years ago. But thank you. To see "A" Darth Vader that i want to buy for my collection. I don't know which one yet. Got the Infinities Darth Vader. But need a Dark Vader. Lol.
There’s been like 4 new vaders since this video, you should update it :D who can’t use MORE vaders!?
Black series 40 for a new hope poster pose display
Mafex rogue one for an empire display on cloud city vs Luke
Model kit with cloth cape for a final duel with Luke over the emperor or with the alternate head and arm parts to recreate his return to the light :)
Good job
cool video, needed more darth vader tbh
How would you compare the winner to the new Hasbro ESB Vader? I LOVE that figure!!! Butterfly arms, best helmet sculpt yet and paint job!!! (screen accurate).
Please do this with more Star Wars characters! I want to find the best Kylo and stormtrooper
I love the Dark Helmet shirt! 😂
hahaha, you're sooo buying the 'new' Darth Vader from SHF :)
Yeah, I'm with you on the Mafex V2 / Rogue One version. That said, I've always been tempted by the HBS 40th version, but never picked it up - the original HBS and the Mafex V2 are enough Vaders for me!
I'm down for the new SHF Stormtrooper though. Yeah they're a bit short, but I need more troopers for my Tantive IV dio and it looks sooo crisp and clean. That shiny white armour on a StrormTrooper can't be beat!
Did they ever make a darkhelmet figure? "It be alot cooler if they did..." 😂😂👍✌
The whole reason I bought the rogue one Vader was because you gave it such praise.
And I still love it, just a cool figure.
I don't know if you have but can you do a ultimate boba fett because some cost to much while some cheap ones are off sale
Mafex Rogue One is definitely the best, but I’m happy with the Black Series 40th anniversary version
Nothing wrong with that, I love that one too.
Seeing your shirt during this kinda makes me want a 6 inch lord helmet thrown in the mix
Yeah, I'd love a few Spaceballs figures.
If the mafex's robes went over the chest piece like how it is in the movie. It wouldve been my number 1 with those piercing red eyes
I really like the Black Series Emperor's Wrath Vader. You have to paint the helmet but once you do I think it's a better Vader than the other two black series figures.
The problem I have with the SH Figuarts head is that the eye lenses are true black instead of having the reddish tint they're supposed to have
Hey Robo, do a second part with the New Vader figs are out or wait to 2023 when Hasbro release a ROTJ Vader
