Ok Brian let me see if I got it right. Lol If the Boat have a heavy oxidation then i will use the presta 890082 white and then i use the green 890085 to polish? Wow about if the boat doesn't have a heavy oxidation is just light i still use the white and then the green one? Im going to do a black and doesn't have a heavy oxidation is just light would you recommend i do the same process first white then green and finish with wax? @@SportfishingBoatshi, I just had a boat with very light oxidization on one side and medium on the other side since it was exposed to sunlight more. On the lighter side I used a yellow harbor freight cutting pad and rubbing compound. Looked perfect no oxidation shooting through. Skipped polishing and then applied royal satin Marine wax with the same pad after washing. On the medium side I used a wool pad and then applied wax with the yellow. After 1 day of saltwater use you can see oxidization shooting through certain spots... Do you know why and how this happened? If there is no oxidization shooting through after compounding why would this happen?

We use double sided mop heads solely for the fact that they are balanced better. You can put a velcro pad on but if you are slightest bit off it will vibrate. It may not seem like much but it will tire your arms and your shoulders. Good video. And Presta is a fabulous product.

Great videos! I have a couple of questions. 1. What type of pad do I use for Waxing? 2. I am replacing original stickers on my boat. I do have oxidation on my boat. So I will use a compound first. When should I apply the new stickers. My guess is after the polish but before the wax. Just want to make sure the stickers will adhere after polishing. Thank you

My question you hit on briefly is getting into tight spaces and under rails etc. Will your recommended machine and pads work in these tight areas vs maybe smaller machine/pad? you seem like the right person to ask this question. The keel of my boat has some wear on it from rubbing on sand bars. The white has disappeared on the end of it. Is there a way i can fix that or is that something that needs to be done by the pros?
Buff and shine sells double sided wool pads and an extension for those pads that’s only $5. I like the double sided pads because they’re pretty much two pads in one, plus buff and shine has wool pads from heavy cutting to finishing, a double sided pad is always perfectly balanced since it’s always centered, with Velcro you have to guess it a few times to get it close.
When and how to clean those Presto pads ? Or how they look when time is throw the away and buy new one ? Maybe stupid question , but I am using those for first time using Makita 9237 with Presto Super Cut trying to get oxidation from my boat . Glad to found your videos how to do it.
Hi there! I don't have a boat, but I do have a fiberglass RV, and I think they're about the same. I have used the heavy wool pad with Meguiar's one step, and brought back a fantastic shine. Adios oxidation! So now that I have de-oxidized, polished and waxed (spray on Turtle Wax Graphene Flex Wax) what should I use for the final buffing? Will the blue polishing pad you mentioned be too abrasive for a final touch? Thanks in advance. (And let me just add, removing years of oxidation from a 23 year old 32' class A is a colossal pain in the a$$! I now completely understand why GOOD detailers charge well over $1000 for this. You people are saints! But after hiring one clod who did a HORRIBLE job, I just did it myself, so now I just have to maintain it)
I bought all the Presta products you suggested. I find the compound leaves the surface feeling smooth, but when I use the green polishing pad with the Presta polish, the surface seems rougher and not as shiny. Weird right^. Would you suggest using the blue pad for polish vs hte green pad? Thanks for your videos, they really help
Brian, First, I really appreciate the videos and your expertise. Thanks for passing on all the knowledge to us at home! I’m out of Biloxi, MS. I use your setup verbatim, makita and Presta products, I too have found they are the best. Lately I have been working on some boats with gelcoat that is oxidized to the point that it’s badly pitted. It takes me 4-6 passes with the Supercut to get that head on gloss. Even after this I’ll have a good cut on top but some of the putting can still be seen. The setup I’m using is Presta white wool pad, Supercut on a 3M backing plate on the Makita at about 1500-1800 RPMs. What have you found to be the best product combination on buffing gelcoat oxidized to that degree?

Brian I'm using 3M restoration wax. It says one step. My detailer used it last year and it looks great. I'm doing it myself this year. Will I need two pads still? One for putting on the wax and one for buffing it out??
I don’t use restorer waxes. I actually made these videos because of my dislike of the damage those products do over the years. I wanted to show the better way to do it.
So you have listed a buffer that has a 7" pad spec but I'm only finding the pads you recommended in 9" pads. I don't want to buy the wrong pads. Is there something about the PAD spec that would mean the 9" pad will fit on the 7" buffer?
Would you recommend a cleaning spur? Is that necessary and does that prolong the life of a pad? Great videos btw.. you have motivated me to finally get the chalk off my 18' CC.
mdowling73 cleaning spurs or a brush(my favorite) are definitely helpful. I wouldn’t say it prolongs the life, but rather improves the performance. When your pad is full and thick with the right amount of product you get optimum use out of it. 1 pad should be fine for an 18. Good luck with it!

Question. My boat is pretty new. I have it waxed every year but it's starting to get dull now. So I would use a polish at this stage. Now do I need to remove the wax before polishing to get started? Or just start with my polish and call it a day? Thanks sir!
40 years of contracting taught me Makita is better than Dewalt in a refined sort of way - but if you need to abuse a tool, like a feather it on and off repeatedly and give it continuous abuse the Dewalt will outlast the Makita. That being said Plugins are Makita for personal - Dewalt for the field - And Festool in my dreams - Milwauki 12v Fuel for all battery tools
Just got a quote for $1200 to get my boat done so I bough everything including Makita buffer from you channel for a third of that. One question - he would not touch below the water line? Can I compound, polish and wax that area too?
Hi. Great video! I was deciding between makita and dewault polishers, and decided to go with makita based on your recommendation. It comes with a 7 in backing plate, but I dont see any 7 inch presta wool pads, only 9 in. Do I have to get a 9 in backing plate? What size backing plate and pad do you use? Thank you!
First remove any obstacle you can. For tight areas and around fixtures you can’t remove, turn the speed dial down to 1000 rpms or less and have patience. I don’t use anything other than a Makita 9237.
Great stuff thanks. A few questions: I have bad shoulders so hand waxing and wiping tough.Can I use a my orbital to apply and remove wax? Also some recommend acetone wipe down between steps?
Robert Moriarty My shoulders are in bad shape too from years of doing this! I feel your pain(pun intended)! Absolutely you can use an orbital and use Farleca Polymer wax. Much easier on and off😀 than other waxes. No need for acetone at all between steps. Presta cleans up extremely well(less wiping this easier On my shoulders). 3M compound for example dries on surface and requires more effort to remove. Good luck with it!

JAY D Your welcome. If you’ve seen my other videos you know I use Farleca polymer wax a lot. That goes on and off so easy I just put it on by hand, especially on the inside. You can apply it with a soft foam pad on the hull if you like. As long as it’s soft it will work fine to apply and remove by hand with microfiber

Brian, I have a light oxidation on the stern area, and maybe 5-6 feet towards the bow on my boat. Past that it's in pretty good shape.... I don't want to cut too much, so what would you recommend for me? It's a black boat and I don't want to end up with tons of swirls. I have a decent polisher I have used on clear coat that works well. What pads and compound would you recommend for light oxidation, and finally polish, for the black on my boat?
Hunter Johnson what usually happens when you try not to cut “too much” is you don’t do enough. Especially with dark colors. If I can see oxidation I’m using compound and a wool pad. Then polishing with a blended pad. Did I answer your question?
Ian, your right, I need to make one. With Farleca you can do it by hand so fast, I would say just do that way. Farleca is so simple to use. I love that stuff.
After polishing what do you recommend for applying my wax and buffing the wax. Also do you recommend wiping the compound or polish off with a microfiber cloth?
Hi Brian- I have a Cobalt 262 WSS. After spending the summer on the lake i would like to polish the boat before putting it away for the season. Since the boat is a WSS it has graphics on the side that appear to be on top of the gelcoat (something like a decal). Is it safe to compound and polish over the graphics? Also, since I have never done this before what are the 5 mistakes that beginners do when polishing a boat. I have purchased all of your recommended products for this project. Thanks.
Chris, sorry for slow response. Don’t worry about graphics. Go over them like they aren’t there. Common mistakes in no particular order. 1. Not compounding and polishing enough.- don’t stop till the surface looks new. 2. Waxes aren’t the secret.- polishing is! Pick a wax you like and move on with life! 3. Fear of “burning” gel coat. Only buff in shade and keep it moving and you’ll never have any problems. 4. Trust the process. It works, but it is work... 5. Remain humble while your neighbor drools at your boat...

Love this channel!! Really informative! How oxidized does the Gelcoat need to be to warrant these pads, and the Presta Super Cut Compound, followed by the Ultra Polish? I had my blue and white, 1999 Cobalt 206 professionally detailed 2 years ago, but have tried to keep her waxed. The blue below the rub rail still looks glossy, but maybe a bit faded. The blue above the rub rail is oxidized...but not severely. I don't want to be too aggressive on the Gelcoat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Sorry for slow response. Drowned my phone a few days ago... Do not worry about being too aggressive. Get the boat to where it is glossy as it can and routinely polish. Definitely get some compound.
I’ll almost guarantee you’ll need to compound. The way to figure out how much is to do a “test spot”. This method is fool proof. Everything else is a guess.
Why do you feel the best way to get rid of oxidation is by buffing it Away? What about either dry sanding w/1000 to 1500 grit sandpaper (which is what is 3M & it’s Perfect-it Products recommends ) or wet sanding by others with same 1000/1500 grit? I have a 20 yr old Key West Center Center console that is super dull & faded, the sides of the boat does still show signs of having some shine, but not much. What are your thoughts? Thanks
Wet sanding is more agressive (removes more of the gelcoat) than just buffing. Sometimes its necessary, sometimes not. The best way to see what you need to do is with a test spot. If you spend more than two minutes compounding out a 2 foot by two foot area, then its time to wet sand.
All good questions I need to include in video. A spur is handy. You can soak in bucket with dish soap as well. I don’t use more than a quart of compound or polish per pad. So I usually finish the project and throw the old one out. Fresh pads make a huge difference.
What are your thoughts on ceramic coatings? Have you done a video on them? Is there a brand that you recommend that the public can purchase? Lastly what steps should I do with my non-skid surfaces on the deck of my boat?
Sometimes I buff the nonskid just like the rest of the gelcoat with an old pad. Just depends on type of nonskid. Whatever you do.... Do not wax it... it will be SLICK.
@@SportfishingBoats The boat is a 1995 370 Sea Ray so the non skid isn't super aggressive like say on a Tiara. But I want to keep it clean and prevent it from oxidizing. What products or steps do you recommend on Non skid to clean it and maintain it? Or what steps?
Jack Jenerou use an old pad and slow the speed down some on the buffer and compound and polish it just like the gel coat on the rest of the boat. Just don’t wax it. Magic erasers are VERY helpful when cleaning😉

Presta White 890082wd. And green890085wd. Presta suggests 1800rpm for compounding( 1 or 2 clicks above 3 on dial.). Polishing 1400rpm(1 click before 3).
Brian - great videos - thanks - I recently got a Presta black wool cutting pad as white pad were sold out - I have a normal not heavily oxidized 22 ft boat - should I return the black cutting pad for the white cutting pad? I also got the Presta Blue pad for polishing but the package says the green is better for regular polishing and Blue for final polishing for swirl removal - any advice? I am planning on using the Presta Super cut compound and the Presta ultra polish for the first two steps. Thanks again
teakayh All good questions. Keep the black pad it will be fine. The blue will be fine as well. In the end it’s a boat not a exotic car going to a show. You’ll get good results with those. The differences in those pads is negligible.
Hi Brian. Great videos, I have gold colored rod holders/rocket launcher, I believe they are anodized aluminum but not sure. They have gotten cloudy with what looks like water spots. So I want to shine them up. I tried Flitz a couple of times this weekend with no luck. Have you come across these and what would you use to restore the shine?
Joseph, hmm... not familiar with what your describing. You have to be cautious with anodized aluminum not to hurt the anodizing. First thing I would do is make sure you have anodizing and not another finish on aluminum or possibly bronze.
Brian, new boat owner...I have a buffer and a wool pad, just wondering what speed should I be running the buffer at if I am using a oxidation remover compound? I am enjoying the videos...well done.
I don’t use a dewalt so I don’t know the exact number setting on the dial, but 1500-1800rpms. The 3M or any profit that contains wax creates problems as the wax will hide the oxidation as you buff making it difficult to know if you have removed the oxidation. That product is also more of a Polish then compound. Not aggressive enough to remove anything other than light oxidation.
Hey man thanks for the video. I am currently using a DeWalt rotary buffer and I cannot get the gel coat looking good. I am very familiar with automotive paint. I am using the 3m medium and light gel coat compounds with the meguires heavy cutting pad. I have also tried the makita wool pad. I’m at a loss. I even tried wet sanding the oxidation and buffed it out. There is always light scratches remaining and some haze. I have a 2015 Yamaha AR 240 and the gel coat is grey.
Okay. Here is a key thing to know if you have experience with automotive paint. Something very aggressive on car paint Is only medium aggressive on gelcoat. You have 20mils of gelcoat and 2 mils of paint. 3M is a nice product in an auto body shop. It’s not so good on a boat particularly outside. There are just a few compounds made that really perform well on gel coat. Presta Supercut is darn good. I can’t remember using a Meguiars pad. I can tell you the Makita pad is seriously lacking. I use Presta, but a 3M 5711 is a nice pad.

@@bencox7439 Compound it again. With Gelcoat you can apply more pressure to the pad than you would with auto paint. Try that and see what happens. 1800rpms works well.
Jerry No sir. Wax pads are usually black foam for machine. I hand wax on the inside and sometimes use a dual action on hull sides. To keep it simple, I would recommend just hand waxing.
Question: I did a heavy cut last season. I just want to bring it back from the year of use and protect it with wax. Would a one step medium cut/wax from 3M work for that application? thanks! also im going to buy that Makita!
Check out my video preventing gel coat oxidation. This is what you want to be doing to maintain once all the oxidation is removed. Yes, the Makita is bulletproof.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but can I use the same type of pad used for polishing to apply a polymer sealant after polishing or do you recommend a different one?
Just to keep it simple, I recommend applying waxes or sealants by hand for diy use. There isn’t much speed advantage and by the time you have figured out the set up and idiosyncrasies of the particular product in machine application you probably could have done the boat twice by hand. Just my thoughts.
Good question. 1 pad per quart of compound or polish. The pads get dull, resulting in rebuffing areas and using more compound or polish. Which doesn’t save money or your shoulders! Pads make HUGE difference. Buy good ones.
I’m about to get the oxidation off my new boat but the oxidation is really bad I sanded down to 1000 but still doesn’t look like it’s helping. I don’t want to wastes my money I don’t know what to get so I’m googling and everyone uses different compounds ( smh) I don’t need it to be perfect. Any suggestions?
Are you supposed to experience shedding on wool pad/polisher? I did the trick that you let it spin the wool pad and use your hand with water to grab the shedding wool. My wool pad still shed but maybe less. Will it ever go away?
@@SportfishingBoats One more thing... the 3M wool pad "round felt" at the back that has the name and part# which is used to connect the Velcro plate fell off almost when I was done. Its was glued. I used cement glue and didn't work. I again used 3M super 77 but didn't get to test it. What do you think?

Hey Brian, it’s Richie from MD again. I went ahead and purchased the Makita. It has a setting from 1-6. Question: what setting should I have it on for compounding, and what setting should I have it on for polishing?
You’ll see a guide on side of machine that indicates which numbers correspond with each rpm. 1800 rpm compound, 1400 for polish. That means one or two clicks past “3” on dial for compound and one click before 3 for polish. However, it’s totally fine to go a little slower compounding the first section until you get the hang of it😉

Sportfishing Boats so I am on presta’s website now, and looking to purchase the setup you mentioned above. I see the white wool pad for compounding listed as “white wool heavy cutting pad”. The green for polishing is listed as “green blended wool light cutting pad”...is this what I want? I am a little confused because I see a blue pad labeled “blue blended wool soft polish” available as well. Newbie here so I am getting confused!
I used presta gelcoat compound with white wool cutting pad then follow up with D.A. machine foam cutting pad then D.A. for polishing and hand wax... 😊😊😊
What Polisher and pads would you recommend for RV that has a clear coat finish. In somes places the clear coat is flaking off. ( 20 years old) There are areas that are painted and then areas that are white. But everything is clear coated, except the roof. Appreciate any advice you could provide me.

We use double sided mop heads solely for the fact that they are balanced better. You can put a velcro pad on but if you are slightest bit off it will vibrate. It may not seem like much but it will tire your arms and your shoulders. Good video. And Presta is a fabulous product.

Great videos! I have a couple of questions. 1. What type of pad do I use for Waxing? 2. I am replacing original stickers on my boat. I do have oxidation on my boat. So I will use a compound first. When should I apply the new stickers. My guess is after the polish but before the wax. Just want to make sure the stickers will adhere after polishing. Thank you

you seem like the right person to ask this question. The keel of my boat has some wear on it from rubbing on sand bars. The white has disappeared on the end of it. Is there a way i can fix that or is that something that needs to be done by the pros?
Buff and shine sells double sided wool pads and an extension for those pads that’s only $5. I like the double sided pads because they’re pretty much two pads in one, plus buff and shine has wool pads from heavy cutting to finishing, a double sided pad is always perfectly balanced since it’s always centered, with Velcro you have to guess it a few times to get it close.
When and how to clean those Presto pads ? Or how they look when time is throw the away and buy new one ? Maybe stupid question , but I am using those for first time using Makita 9237 with Presto Super Cut trying to get oxidation from my boat . Glad to found your videos how to do it.

Hi there! I don't have a boat, but I do have a fiberglass RV, and I think they're about the same. I have used the heavy wool pad with Meguiar's one step, and brought back a fantastic shine. Adios oxidation! So now that I have de-oxidized, polished and waxed (spray on Turtle Wax Graphene Flex Wax) what should I use for the final buffing? Will the blue polishing pad you mentioned be too abrasive for a final touch? Thanks in advance. (And let me just add, removing years of oxidation from a 23 year old 32' class A is a colossal pain in the a$$! I now completely understand why GOOD detailers charge well over $1000 for this. You people are saints! But after hiring one clod who did a HORRIBLE job, I just did it myself, so now I just have to maintain it)

I bought all the Presta products you suggested. I find the compound leaves the surface feeling smooth, but when I use the green polishing pad with the Presta polish, the surface seems rougher and not as shiny. Weird right^. Would you suggest using the blue pad for polish vs hte green pad? Thanks for your videos, they really help

I use your setup verbatim, makita and Presta products, I too have found they are the best. Lately I have been working on some boats with gelcoat that is oxidized to the point that it’s badly pitted. It takes me 4-6 passes with the Supercut to get that head on gloss. Even after this I’ll have a good cut on top but some of the putting can still be seen. The setup I’m using is Presta white wool pad, Supercut on a 3M backing plate on the Makita at about 1500-1800 RPMs.
What have you found to be the best product combination on buffing gelcoat oxidized to that degree?

Brian I'm using 3M restoration wax. It says one step. My detailer used it last year and it looks great. I'm doing it myself this year. Will I need two pads still? One for putting on the wax and one for buffing it out??
I don’t use restorer waxes. I actually made these videos because of my dislike of the damage those products do over the years. I wanted to show the better way to do it.
So you have listed a buffer that has a 7" pad spec but I'm only finding the pads you recommended in 9" pads. I don't want to buy the wrong pads. Is there something about the PAD spec that would mean the 9" pad will fit on the 7" buffer?
Would you recommend a cleaning spur? Is that necessary and does that prolong the life of a pad? Great videos btw.. you have motivated me to finally get the chalk off my 18' CC.
mdowling73 cleaning spurs or a brush(my favorite) are definitely helpful. I wouldn’t say it prolongs the life, but rather improves the performance. When your pad is full and thick with the right amount of product you get optimum use out of it. 1 pad should be fine for an 18. Good luck with it!
Dumb question… how do you remove the 3M adapter? I’m having a heck of a time getting mine off and putting the regular backing plate back on.

40 years of contracting taught me Makita is better than Dewalt in a refined sort of way - but if you need to abuse a tool, like a feather it on and off repeatedly and give it continuous abuse the Dewalt will outlast the Makita. That being said Plugins are Makita for personal - Dewalt for the field - And Festool in my dreams - Milwauki 12v Fuel for all battery tools

Great info, What advice can you give on tools for buffing and polishing the gelcoat in tight locations like the cockpit of a sailboat?
First remove any obstacle you can. For tight areas and around fixtures you can’t remove, turn the speed dial down to 1000 rpms or less and have patience. I don’t use anything other than a Makita 9237.
Btw, sailboats are obstacle course for a buffer....🤨🤨🤨

Robert Moriarty My shoulders are in bad shape too from years of doing this! I feel your pain(pun intended)! Absolutely you can use an orbital and use Farleca Polymer wax. Much easier on and off😀 than other waxes. No need for acetone at all between steps. Presta cleans up extremely well(less wiping this easier On my shoulders). 3M compound for example dries on surface and requires more effort to remove. Good luck with it!

JAY D Your welcome. If you’ve seen my other videos you know I use Farleca polymer wax a lot. That goes on and off so easy I just put it on by hand, especially on the inside. You can apply it with a soft foam pad on the hull if you like. As long as it’s soft it will work fine to apply and remove by hand with microfiber

Brian, I have a light oxidation on the stern area, and maybe 5-6 feet towards the bow on my boat. Past that it's in pretty good shape.... I don't want to cut too much, so what would you recommend for me? It's a black boat and I don't want to end up with tons of swirls. I have a decent polisher I have used on clear coat that works well. What pads and compound would you recommend for light oxidation, and finally polish, for the black on my boat?
Hunter Johnson what usually happens when you try not to cut “too much” is you don’t do enough. Especially with dark colors. If I can see oxidation I’m using compound and a wool pad. Then polishing with a blended pad. Did I answer your question?

Ian, your right, I need to make one. With Farleca you can do it by hand so fast, I would say just do that way. Farleca is so simple to use. I love that stuff.

Hi Brian- I have a Cobalt 262 WSS. After spending the summer on the lake i would like to polish the boat before putting it away for the season. Since the boat is a WSS it has graphics on the side that appear to be on top of the gelcoat (something like a decal). Is it safe to compound and polish over the graphics? Also, since I have never done this before what are the 5 mistakes that beginners do when polishing a boat. I have purchased all of your recommended products for this project. Thanks.
Chris, sorry for slow response. Don’t worry about graphics. Go over them like they aren’t there. Common mistakes in no particular order. 1. Not compounding and polishing enough.- don’t stop till the surface looks new. 2. Waxes aren’t the secret.- polishing is! Pick a wax you like and move on with life! 3. Fear of “burning” gel coat. Only buff in shade and keep it moving and you’ll never have any problems. 4. Trust the process. It works, but it is work... 5. Remain humble while your neighbor drools at your boat...

Love this channel!! Really informative! How oxidized does the Gelcoat need to be to warrant these pads, and the Presta Super Cut Compound, followed by the Ultra Polish? I had my blue and white, 1999 Cobalt 206 professionally detailed 2 years ago, but have tried to keep her waxed. The blue below the rub rail still looks glossy, but maybe a bit faded. The blue above the rub rail is oxidized...but not severely. I don't want to be too aggressive on the Gelcoat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Sorry for slow response. Drowned my phone a few days ago... Do not worry about being too aggressive. Get the boat to where it is glossy as it can and routinely polish. Definitely get some compound.
I’ll almost guarantee you’ll need to compound. The way to figure out how much is to do a “test spot”. This method is fool proof. Everything else is a guess.

Why do you feel the best way to get rid of oxidation is by buffing it Away? What about either dry sanding w/1000 to 1500 grit sandpaper (which is what is 3M & it’s Perfect-it Products recommends ) or wet sanding by others with same 1000/1500 grit? I have a 20 yr old Key West Center Center console that is super dull & faded, the sides of the boat does still show signs of having some shine, but not much. What are your thoughts? Thanks
Wet sanding is more agressive (removes more of the gelcoat) than just buffing. Sometimes its necessary, sometimes not. The best way to see what you need to do is with a test spot. If you spend more than two minutes compounding out a 2 foot by two foot area, then its time to wet sand.
Cleaning wool pads... use the spur tool between jobs? Only use the spur tool? Or throw in washing machine? If so, then what soap?
All good questions I need to include in video. A spur is handy. You can soak in bucket with dish soap as well. I don’t use more than a quart of compound or polish per pad. So I usually finish the project and throw the old one out. Fresh pads make a huge difference.
What are your thoughts on ceramic coatings? Have you done a video on them? Is there a brand that you recommend that the public can purchase? Lastly what steps should I do with my non-skid surfaces on the deck of my boat?
I do not use or recommend ceramic. I definitely would not recommend DIY it either. Check out the video on my channel “preventing gel coat oxidation”.
Sometimes I buff the nonskid just like the rest of the gelcoat with an old pad. Just depends on type of nonskid. Whatever you do.... Do not wax it... it will be SLICK.
@@SportfishingBoats The boat is a 1995 370 Sea Ray so the non skid isn't super aggressive like say on a Tiara. But I want to keep it clean and prevent it from oxidizing. What products or steps do you recommend on Non skid to clean it and maintain it? Or what steps?
Jack Jenerou use an old pad and slow the speed down some on the buffer and compound and polish it just like the gel coat on the rest of the boat. Just don’t wax it. Magic erasers are VERY helpful when cleaning😉

Presta suggests 1800rpm for compounding( 1 or 2 clicks above 3 on dial.). Polishing 1400rpm(1 click before 3).

Brian - great videos - thanks - I recently got a Presta black wool cutting pad as white pad were sold out - I have a normal not heavily oxidized 22 ft boat - should I return the black cutting pad for the white cutting pad? I also got the Presta Blue pad for polishing but the package says the green is better for regular polishing and Blue for final polishing for swirl removal - any advice? I am planning on using the Presta Super cut compound and the Presta ultra polish for the first two steps. Thanks again
teakayh All good questions. Keep the black pad it will be fine. The blue will be fine as well. In the end it’s a boat not a exotic car going to a show. You’ll get good results with those. The differences in those pads is negligible.
Hi Brian. Great videos, I have gold colored rod holders/rocket launcher, I believe they are anodized aluminum but not sure. They have gotten cloudy with what looks like water spots. So I want to shine them up. I tried Flitz a couple of times this weekend with no luck. Have you come across these and what would you use to restore the shine?
Joseph, hmm... not familiar with what your describing. You have to be cautious with anodized aluminum not to hurt the anodizing. First thing I would do is make sure you have anodizing and not another finish on aluminum or possibly bronze.

I don’t use a dewalt so I don’t know the exact number setting on the dial, but 1500-1800rpms. The 3M or any profit that contains wax creates problems as the wax will hide the oxidation as you buff making it difficult to know if you have removed the oxidation. That product is also more of a Polish then compound. Not aggressive enough to remove anything other than light oxidation.

Hey man thanks for the video. I am currently using a DeWalt rotary buffer and I cannot get the gel coat looking good. I am very familiar with automotive paint. I am using the 3m medium and light gel coat compounds with the meguires heavy cutting pad. I have also tried the makita wool pad. I’m at a loss. I even tried wet sanding the oxidation and buffed it out. There is always light scratches remaining and some haze. I have a 2015 Yamaha AR 240 and the gel coat is grey.
Okay. Here is a key thing to know if you have experience with automotive paint. Something very aggressive on car paint Is only medium aggressive on gelcoat. You have 20mils of gelcoat and 2 mils of paint. 3M is a nice product in an auto body shop. It’s not so good on a boat particularly outside. There are just a few compounds made that really perform well on gel coat. Presta Supercut is darn good. I can’t remember using a Meguiars pad. I can tell you the Makita pad is seriously lacking. I use Presta, but a 3M 5711 is a nice pad.

@@bencox7439 Compound it again. With Gelcoat you can apply more pressure to the pad than you would with auto paint. Try that and see what happens. 1800rpms works well.

Jerry No sir. Wax pads are usually black foam for machine. I hand wax on the inside and sometimes use a dual action on hull sides. To keep it simple, I would recommend just hand waxing.

How do you apply the wax after compounding and polishing?
I know I'm a little late to the party, but can I use the same type of pad used for polishing to apply a polymer sealant after polishing or do you recommend a different one?
Just to keep it simple, I recommend applying waxes or sealants by hand for diy use. There isn’t much speed advantage and by the time you have figured out the set up and idiosyncrasies of the particular product in machine application you probably could have done the boat twice by hand. Just my thoughts.
How many of each pad do you go through to complete a job ,for instance a 19 foot jet boat.. I know you can wash and reuse .
Good question. 1 pad per quart of compound or polish. The pads get dull, resulting in rebuffing areas and using more compound or polish. Which doesn’t save money or your shoulders! Pads make HUGE difference. Buy good ones.

Are you supposed to experience shedding on wool pad/polisher? I did the trick that you let it spin the wool pad and use your hand with water to grab the shedding wool. My wool pad still shed but maybe less. Will it ever go away?

@@SportfishingBoats One more thing... the 3M wool pad "round felt" at the back that has the name and part# which is used to connect the Velcro plate fell off almost when I was done. Its was glued. I used cement glue and didn't work. I again used 3M super 77 but didn't get to test it. What do you think?
Probably when I washed it and soaked it in a bucket with hot water and dish washing soap. Somebody told me that's how you clean it.

Hey Brian, it’s Richie from MD again. I went ahead and purchased the Makita. It has a setting from 1-6. Question: what setting should I have it on for compounding, and what setting should I have it on for polishing?
You’ll see a guide on side of machine that indicates which numbers correspond with each rpm. 1800 rpm compound, 1400 for polish. That means one or two clicks past “3” on dial for compound and one click before 3 for polish. However, it’s totally fine to go a little slower compounding the first section until you get the hang of it😉

Sportfishing Boats so I am on presta’s website now, and looking to purchase the setup you mentioned above. I see the white wool pad for compounding listed as “white wool heavy cutting pad”. The green for polishing is listed as “green blended wool light cutting pad”...is this what I want? I am a little confused because I see a blue pad labeled “blue blended wool soft polish” available as well. Newbie here so I am getting confused!

Did you have to change the backing plate on the Makita to use the Presta pads?
No, Makita will work albiet I do like Presta backing plate better.
I used presta gelcoat compound with white wool cutting pad then follow up with D.A. machine foam cutting pad then D.A. for polishing and hand wax... 😊😊😊

It turn out great i did that coz the boat is well oxidized still depends on how bad the boat is.... can you review some wax or sealants for boat?

7inch pads. Sometimes referred to as 8’s or 9’s. They are all the same size though🤷♂️

What Polisher and pads would you recommend for RV that has a clear coat finish. In somes places the clear coat is flaking off. ( 20 years old) There are areas that are painted and then areas that are white. But everything is clear coated, except the roof.
Appreciate any advice you could provide me.
If it doesn’t float- I don’t know much! I would be completely guessing on what to recommend since it sounds like you have a painted RV. Sorry, I’m not familiar enough to help. Brian
@@SportfishingBoats I just thought since it was all fiber glass/gel coat with only some surfaces having paint it would be pretty similar to boats. The roof for example is all white, just gel coat to my knowledge and no clear coat.
